  1. I just finished playing Furi, something I've been wanting to do for some time, and boy does it have a great soundtrack. Not only because it's enjoyable on its own but it complements the atmosphere and aesthetic of the game so well. Also in-game the boss themes only progress as you get further into the fight, which is always a neat touch.
  2. I wouldn't say dislike, I've seen more like from "lukewarm" to "actively like it". Then again, I don't know what you've seen.
  3. My guess is it's fairly commonplace, we just don't see it because I assume most of us don't hang out in Japanese communities. Though maybe not as much as in the west like Sasa said. Fair warning I'm about to talk out my ass, but maybe in the early years of Touhou there might've been more incentive to pirate? Because of limited supply? I don't know how circles handle/used to handle that. Also there could be a certain uh, camaraderie in the doujin scene that makes piracy within that sector be frowned upon, like you see here with indie stuff.
  4. I need to sit down and watch SZS one of these days....
  5. Alright some good food 10. ARA - Area 4 (Capital City of Flowers in the Sky) Ohh hell yeah that FM. Kinda reminds me of like, Ice Cap. But Megaman. Again got that bass doing uh, I don't remember if it's called a gallop but I'm gonna call it that. Huge fan of all the bell-ish sounds, FM does that really well. It has that little new section at the end to tie everything together and it sounds really nice, very slick. Wish this upload would have the loop though, I think that's important when talking about this kind of vgm. Anyways, overall energetic yet low profile and just.. neat! 7/10 11. Kommisar - Maple Dream Dude I was almost gonna pick something from Kommisar, though not this one. Oh but this is good too, whole song just feels like a natural evolution of the original for me, even though the vibe is quite different. All those little sounds sprinkled about are really nice, and subtle enough that they don't distract from the rest of the song. The sections that were more quiet in the original are handled in a more aggressive way here and expanded upon. There's that chord progression at the end that I know I remember from somewhere but, don't know what it was. Anyways love it. 8/10 12. Shibayan Records - MyonMyonMyonMyonMyonMyon! There was a time when this song would terrorize me constantly, always lurking in the corner of my Youtube recs. And it's a nice song, another cute yoom arrange. I really don't know what else to say since it barely goes anywhere in almost 6 minutes, debatable whether that's a bad thing or not in this case. Think the bass tries to do something at some points? The sound of it definitely changes over time at least. Eh idk, song's nice, kinda catchy, makes for good background music. みょん. 7/Myon
  6. 7. dBu Music - Unhuman Variations Never really got into dBu mostly because I don't like how they handle mixes most of the time, but this is kinda nice. There's that cute chiptune intro that then becomes the base for the whole song and it kinda reminds me of Megaman, probably because of the "toms". A bunch of other instruments are introduced later on and it all just works really well. I just like the cheery, playful vibe it goes for, that kind of arrangement fits Mamizou really well. I think it drags a little for what it is but hey the little solo near the end is not bad. 7/10 8. Komeji Records - Youmu at the End Oh the "epic orchestral". Well as far as the arrange goes it's alright, it fits the bill. There's some nice ambience in some parts, otherwise pretty straightforward. My problem with these kinds of arrangements is that they can sound really, really stiff and flat, because programming MIDI orchestration is not that simple. And that's what happens here sadly. I mean the MIDI orchestra sound does have a certain charm as well but I don't think that comes through here and it, kinda ruins the whole thing for me. 4/10 9. ZYTOKINE - The Illness Approaching You - Edelritter Remix Well the intro got me interested, and I love whatever the fuck's going on at 0:55. The slower section that begins right after that is also really nice. Then you lose me for a minute. That whole part with the really harsh sound sounds cool but... not a fan. One thing overall is it just, starts and stops very often? Kinda breaks the whole flow of the song for me, while the latter half (3:00) sounds more coherent. Speaking of that last part, really good, keeps the energy going til the end. Again maybe I'm listening to this with the wrong ears but they're the ones I have. 6/10
  7. 4. Rolling Contact - Lunatic Vengeance I'm just gonna say electronic music is very hit or miss with me. And this is... more of a miss. I'll echo busker's on the 2:20 part, that's about it for me. In this case it feels like I've heard this song before and the problem is I haven't, though that could in part me not being privy to the nuances of the genres. Despite everything, I always found the sounds of those mishmashes of synths interesting and this is no exception. Think the voice samples are a bit overplayed but eh it didn't bother me too much. 4/10 5. Ottori - Myon Rag Fever Oh this is very nice, a cutesy arrange befitting of the yoom. I thought that guitar was a rhodes for a hot second there. Honestly I like the slower parts here more than the lively energetic ones. The more mellow piano sound is also a nice fit, as well as those subtle violin hits though I feel there could've been just a little bit more done with that instrument. The whole thing does sound a little bit uhh rough but I think that actually adds to the piece instead of detracting, you know gives it life in a way. But while it wraps up nicely I do feel that the song could've gone on for just a little longer. 6.5/10 More Cowbell 6. Composer for The Mystery of Gensokyo - Nostalgic Blood of the East ~ Old World Man I remember this, played this game ages ago... but anyways. The original is one I find myself forgetting about most of the time, but this rendition appeals to me a bit more. It keeps the mysterious vibe from the base track while doing its own thing, and the synths, rhythm and some of the percussion in the later part gives it this sort of "mechanical" sound to me. Which is not something I'd associate the original with but y'know, interesting I like it. I could say that it's very obviously BGM but hey, it's not meant to be more than that. 6/10
  8. I've been replaying Sonic Adventure 2 and I never realized how good some of Tails' themes are. Shame you can barely hear them in-game with all the beeping.
  9. huh. Alright let's see 1. Always nice to see arrangements of this, since it often gets overshadowed by.. well understandable since it's a pretty short track, anyways remix is pretty sweet, with an energetic rhythm that gives it the feeling of constantly moving forward. I do like the more mellow parts too, but the second one at 1:35 - 2:00 feels a bit out of place. 7/10 2. Yep that's Akatsuki Records. I'm somewhat burned out at this point but yeah. 6/10 3. Bit of an odd one, bit of a spicy one. It's kinda difficult to find the sound of the original here ('cept for a part near the end). Love the tone of the vocals, love that bass, love the general darker vibe it has, 9/10
  10. Ohhh interesting. Looking forward to it, I'll go check my library.
  11. Lax regulations, big cast, girls, etc. Keep in mind this happens with literally every piece of media that exists and will exist though. Personally I used to be very anti-horny few years ago but as the years passed I just, whatever. Hell yeah booba. Also like I said in another thread big distinction between cute and/or sexy, and nsfw. The art in that fangame is just so overdone that it loops back to being funny for me honestly.
  12. Him saying those games are dead because of the Steam stats when these are short single player games with little replayability for most people. The player number is gonna peak around release and then it's gonna drop all the way. It doesn't really tell much unless you compare all the games and even then it's kinda pointless. But here it is anyways Most of the main games seem to have a similar number of players recently (the differences are too small to mean much) Almost every game suffers a sharp drop after the first month (at least the ones that started with a high number) UM has the highest all-time peak by far, and right now it's one of the most played Touhou games on Steam along with MoF Steam may as well hold a very small fraction of the people that play the games. Which is really funny to think about considering all the fuss in the past months Again all of this means nothing and I compiled it just to show that. Yeah I agree. Maybe what I said is redundant since Touhou is more about the characters than whatever plot it might have but, yknow. Which brings me to the one I forgot to mention: CoLA. It also follows kinda the same slice of life-ish format but from the get-go it had a more interesting premise to me. Not to mention Rinnosuke being an unique specimen. I haven't read the more recent chapters though.
  13. Just saw the ping, been focusing on other things so I've been neglecting checking in here. Heyo. Also I am not immune to mucho texto. Anyways here's my intermission Thinking about that part of the vid, that is an awful way to gauge interest. In fact if you look at the older games they are doing even worse. You can't expect a short single-player game to have a consistently high playerbase. Unless you're an avid fan of shooter games you're gonna play the games a couple times and... that's it for a while. Most people don't even do the "couple times" part. I personally haven't played a Touhou game since like, the beginning of this year. 15.5 would be the exception to this but while it's decent, it really didn't become established the way Soku did, so it suffers from "just play the story mode and move on". "or just read the dialogue on the wiki lol" Also yeah, coupled with the fact that not everyone plays on Steam. About the print works I agree with what others have mentioned, that where ZUN really shines is at writing shorter stories for the games. I would extend that to the stories included with the music CDs as well, even if they're disjointed due to the nature of the medium, but that's part of why I like them. When it comes to the mangas the only one I've finished is SSiB, and I'm currently keeping up with CDS. And... eh. There are some things I like about SSiB but if you asked me if I found the story interesting overall the answer is "no". CDS... a little bit? Even though it completely messes up the "mystery" aspect in like, the first two chapters. I guess it wasn't going for that in the first place but it really should've. Idk right now the only motivation for me to read the mangas is "I wanna know about X piece of trivia". And that's not a good thing. But that's also why I enjoyed the other, more encyclopedia-ish books that just focus on worldbuilding and characters. I'm probably not the only one who shares this view since I rarely see anyone reminiscing about specific events but I do see people repeat things like "did you know Kogasa is a blacksmith?" like a broken record. Also "ZUN doesn't think too deeply about the stories" "ZUN writes about what he's thinking about at the moment" "ZUN partially uses Touhou to express his views on X" etc etc. Some takes I've seen that make sense to me. Uh. That's all I got in me at the moment. I wanted to go on a little bit about nostalgia and music n shit but I can't think atm.
  14. Got a new PC except I ordered the wrong board so no I didn't.

    1. Turbonator

      Turbonator

EZ board replacement package interception terror strike.

  15. You can probably eat Flandre's wing gem... things. They grow back dw. Also not eat but you could, theoretically, inhale Suika in her mist form.
  16. Yeah that's the standard I guess, just cover the bits and it's safe. Boorus have the "questionable" rating but it's still very subjective. (that Okuu is a tad more tasteful I'd argue)
  17. (I swear I replied earlier today) Don't know if I could narrow it down but I've been playing some kirb lately so King Dedede is on my mind. Was one of my mains when I played Smash 4.
  18. Important distinction between suggestive or fanservice-y and you know, zorn, that's why I didn't know if the chart was relevant. The former usually doesn't get the R-18 tag. Anyways UH. I mean you said it. There's sometimes correlation between the amount of suggestive stuff and how popular a character is, and sometimes there isn't. Others are favored for their appearance or ideas that get associated with them. Sometimes an artist becomes popular for drawing one character and others may follow suit, or a certain situation like fusu does yknow there's a lot to consider. If you wanna get into the whole uh "why is this a thing" fuck dude idk. Though it's not always... entirely sexual? Or even not at all.
  19. What I know is for most of its life Shinra Bansho was a sub circle of Liz Triangle, both featuring kaztora as the main arranger. Eventually due to health issues the vocalist of Liz Triangle lily-an stepped down and the circle disbanded, after which kaztora made Shinra Bansho his main focus. Liz Triangle then reformed around 2020 so now you got two fully fledged different circles with one person in common. Far from being my favorite circle but I like them... on a very surface level (aka what they upload to Youtube) but hey it's good. Of course the PVs are what they're known for and I love them, I think they're a great complement to the songs. Joyfull's changed a lot since the Osana Reimu days lol. My favorite of those is probably Charisma Rengoku Tenshin, mainly for how flashy it looks (and overall it's a neat take on WBaWC). Collabs... happen between bigger circles like this. I assume anyways. BeatMARIO in particular is a very big name in the scene so it doesn't surprise me to see him everywhere. 三妖精YA! SAY YA! SAY YA!
  20. Somehow over the years both my pc and phone bgs ended up as Chen...
  21. Seems like just a synth-ish sound to me. ZUN used presets from the Edirol SD-90 for most of the sounds in the older games, so it's one of those. Not sure if that's the answer you wanted..
  22. Soku is only there because I don't play matches and that's, the whole point of that game.
  23. I'm gonna echo a bit of what buskerdog said, but I mean the general idea afaik is that time flows the same as in the real world, so Reimu should be 20 years older than she was in EoSD for example. However old she was back then. As for why they don't appear to change much physically sometimes it's uh, lore reason is up to you. Youkai stuff. Chen does look a little older in CDS funnily enough. Fairies are just like that though. Design reason? Yeah it would go against the "status quo" of Touhou, it'd be too big a change, which is something ZUN doesn't seem interested in.
