what reason has made you stay in your touhou era?

koakumas

核の悪魔 !!
kind of explanatory similar to that of my characters forum.

was the reason why you stayed is because of the characters, the fact touhou is still ongoing and wait to see more? or maybe just the fact its all a banger soundtracks and remixes?

for me, this era of mine came after my nintendo era, its the fact they copyright everything and take down everything in sight, but touhou? the copyright is almost not there, just follow ZUN's rules and youre sailing, the amount of freedom is amazing with doing whatever we want as long as we follow ZUN's rules, yknow? but yeah, everything from touhou is a banger and there's something for everyone in touhou.

plus crossovers too!!

how about you?

It's not a phase it's my life!

Joking aside, the reason I remain a touhou fan is because of the community :)

I always see so many talented fans -artists, musicians, writers, game developers, and on and on- making amazing fanworks that never fail to blow me away! I love being able to search "touhou [insert genre here]" and see tons of cool remixes! And when I'm not watching all kinds of touhou content, there's big touhou events like Touhoufest where I can meet fellow touhou fans in person :D

well for me is not really much to say, i still enjoy touhou due to it unique gameplay which i like danmaku type game, same too with the OST that somehow better for such old game like EoSD or lower for example, after becoming fan for long time i not realized i just became fan of the most popular thing which that first time i discovered bad apple which i realized it touhou, even IOSYS and even arcade game like Pump-it-up contain touhou music beside bad apple, well stuff that related to touhou making me feel comfortable with it due that i'm not just attracted to a girl in the game but i able to find a friend in same interest with me but too bad in my place i never meet any person who even know what touhou is, some of them laugh or anything else

Gameplay is just up my alley and I love seeing what the community cooks.

Was never a bullet hell guy but I like games that tests my skills and knowledge and see my improvement over time. But beyond gameplay I like seeing passionate people use their skills and talents to show their love for something by making creative works or creating discussions. This community just have so much years worth of lore that I can't help but be intrigued

Is a combination of gameplay / lore / community / and inspiration.

I have always felt fascinated with the whole rabit hole that touhou is. I like games that can add something to my life. In this case touhou serves as an inspiration to my art, my writing, and a lot of other hobbies and projects that I have, examples of other games that inspire me and my art are GD. I have always liked how ZUN gives to the community the possibility of creating artworks and derivate works. I like how touhou shows it´s lore and the story of the games and its characters. So yeah, touhou is probably one of my favorite things in this life :D :KoishiXD:

big boob anime women...
nah in all seriousness, probably just a bit of character lore and design. major part was music and art, to be frank. the other like 20% was just because there's a lotta cool fangames based on touhou out there that I had fun with (like luna nights, which was my first "touhou game")
since I never liked shmups the games didn't interest me, so I didn't touch them as much as I wish I could've.

writing this fully aware of the fact I was like "yo dude these anime women look awesome!!!" and then it's a girl with a hat

Perhaps it's obvious in my case, but it was music that brought me in, and it's music that keeps me here. There was a time in the middle where I was more engaged with the community aspect; the remix tournaments facilitated interaction in context of my pre-existent interests, and the various music threads we have today came into being around the same time. Garison DeCrick (who deleted his account some time ago) had several threads up of a style similar to CountVonNumenor, and those of us who were active at the time had a few non-music related discussions which are now lost to time (I remember an especially interesting thread about potential educational applications for the franchise). In many ways, CountVonNumenor filled the gap of engagement instigation left by Garison, just in time for the sudden boost in members incited by the DMCA incident of 2022. Inevitably, interests shifted, both of the community general and of its specific members. Nowadays, the older members are more lurkers, in much the same way as the oldest members were when the older members were new. I suspect this is the normal cycle for a fandom, and arguably should be; fictitious franchises should not be the core of life, and online relationships can only go so far without opening up to more direct communication. For now, I'm still here, and I appreciate the interactions when they occur.

I'm fairly new, but I like the world and the breath of fan made stuff for it, and asides all of the Western shit I like has gotten bad so became more of a weeb lol. I'd say it and the Nasuverse are my 2 favorites for the moment (If my PFP didn't give it away)

I was brought in by the overwhelming amount of memes, but the music of the franchise is the ONLY thing that is keeping me around this fandom since the pandemic. It's oddly satisfying in a way that other music from other games unable to do (except the Katamari series).

The games are okay however they're too punishing for me and the bullet hell genre is pretty stale for my taste so I eventually quitted after 2 years of playing the games continuously. Though I need to give them credits for immersing me with the awesome music, it's like it's an album with a game inside of it.

The canon lore I've acknowledge during my time of being in this fandom is also pretty interesting and sometimes outright funny (haha futo arsonist) but I don't feel motivated enough to dive deep in it.

i focus my attention to other things sometimes, but why im still a touhou fan today is because there is a ton of content to uncover, theres a ton of games that are fun to replay, and still more content is being created, official and not. i think its going to be a long while when i get tired of it, for good.

Touhou is already great in a lot of aspects, like music, character design, lore, symbolisms, inspirations, and etc.
However, to me is beyond of what Touhou ALREADY is.
To me, is the power of INTERPRETATIONS that you can have in Touhou.
Interpretations and free liberties are one of, if not THE strongest Touhou trait.
From as something simple like a character monologue and it's implications to entire world building, characters and stories to analyze, interpret or even rebuild at your will.
Heck Touhou could be a very good series for AU's creations, which isn't a thing that I see very much.
For such an amazing feat, despite of a lot of inconsistencies, questionable actions and/or wasted potential that ZUN may had, I think is more than enough of worth to stay with Touhou and create content for it, even if nobody checks your fanmade touhou stuff (i say that with humility, isn't a complain 😅).

Though, my only issue is the fanbase. Not only because is, perhaps, too diverse for its own good sometimes, but that I'm not sure how many fans realize or even ACCEPT different interpretations that may disagree to certain extents about canon stuff like PC-98 fanfics that gives their characters far more things than just being a one dimensional character (like how they were shown in their debut) or theories like if Sakuya isn't a human.
Which is a bit worrying, because while I get that we as a community we want to respect ZUN official works (which is at least decent overall), we stick to Canon a bit too much, at the point of discarding seeing something else that isn't exactly what it was shown in canon. And this is bad, not only because ZUN LET US be far more creative and don't fear about canon too much, but also because we don't give the support that some works offer nowadays, even some comparing it with past works like KKHTA or Osana Reimu when I don't see reason as to WHY do that.

I just hope that changes for better in the future because is a bit worrying and a lot of fans are losing a lot of opportunities for better content.

I completely agree with everything you just said.

Mostly just being very cheap resource wise games.
...
And the music.

Even if im not the greatest, i found a great enjoyment playing touhou games (specially 6 and 12.8 cuz i didnt really enjoy stuff like 7 and later games). So i just stick there for a while. Also the fan music is great, fan remixes and just digging deeper and deeper on ZUN's obscure crap its interesting to me. I need to learn bettern PC98 emulation to great even better sounding music, or maybr grab one of those machines and rock some FM. Im getting obessed by getting the cleanest and different versions of PC98 soundtrack; hell even with the MIDI soundtrack.

Funnilt enough, my first era ended on 2022. I had bad experiences with the community, and really i just wanted to change stuff in my online life atleast. I left it behind and continue. Until 2023 where i found Len'en.
Short story: I liked Len'en a lot and my flame for these games came back... but with the mindset of not being very community driven.

Now on 2026, JynX crap made me search for more Oldy toho stuff, and im now here as basically a hate fan. I have a toxic relationship with Touhou where you can see me saying some Sun Temperature hot takes, plus being mostly a PC98 and Amusement Maker fan.

Atleast now i try to be a little more community driven, but hey. Im here for the games and music still... even if i just cant stop hating on ZUN games for half my existence.
...
Im just one of those people who cant enjoy stuff, but Tōhō is big enough so i actually found something to like. Cant say that bout the rest tho...
