How did you get into Touhou?

How did you get into Touhou and when did you get into it?

I got into into Touhou after i randomly stumbled upon some short animations (i can't find them anymore tho), it was during summer holidays in 2023 when i watched few, this is how i also got into anime, i forgot how i got further into it tho, if i recall correctly i saw more of these and all of the animations with the same characters had "Touhou" in the title, but im not sure.

I was obsessed with rhythm games back then and since stepmania was my go to, I stumbled into those pad simpacks which I grinded to hell and back (not knowing they were meant for pad and not keyboard, but who cares...). Eventually I got curious, learned about what a touhou is, then joined this very site
The funny thing about all of this is that the creator of said simpacks was an old moderator of the Moriya discord, so I guess it all comes full circle. Lol.

How did you get into Touhou and when did you get into it?
Pretty sure this was asked before as most threads are lol

I remember seeing some Aya fanart when I was younger, I got interested and searched about it some more. I guess her design and some of the IN songs are what drew me.

I got into Touhou from a variety of things. Though the main reason is because of the musical arranges. I mainly found and got into those around mid to late 2024.
Bad Apple I think is one of the main reasons I got into the characters.

Now, most of those musical arranges I just found from YouTube recommendations. But a couple songs by Halozy are one reason I found Touhou. I saw those in a game I was playing (don't remember what one) and it got me curious about them.
(Just to make sure you know, it wasn't any type of rhythm game. I only really found out those existed because of Touhou.)

Well, another thing to note is the fact I had in fact seen stuff relating to Touhou before (and I was aware that it was Touhou). One channel I can think of is SkuddeOuo. I found that channel as a result of me being into the music from an obscure Japanese game franchise by the name of Exa_Pico and they had some of the music from those games on their channel.
At the time, I just didn't find interest in Touhou for whatever reason or another.
Regardless, besides Bad Apple, I hadn't seen any animations for Touhou.

Getting a sense of deja vu here...

Long story short, I got into Touhou after seeing pictures of Yukari and thinking she was a hot babe (as most 17 Y/Os do). Tried playing the games in high school, dumped them for being too hard, picked the series back up after 4-5 something years, got gud to the point of consistent normal 1CCs, and the rest is history. Good thing I got back into the series again after all those years, Yukari's not the only baddie living in the confines of Gensokyo.

From a Team Fortress 2 version of Chirumiru, Bonkumiru.

I was and am really into TF2 and funnily enough I find the TF2 and Touhou communities similar in a lot of ways, which explains the vast amount of crossover in fan works (probably extends into Source and Touhou in general).

Then I chained through a lot of stuff and noticed just how rooted Touhou is into the internet and eventually got TH6 through here to try it out. Played it a handful of times over a few years while keeping Touhou on my periphery until I got into it more seriously maybe two months ago and now I've 1CC'd 6 and 7 and am on 8.

So really I guess it is the vast webs that Touhou has spread all across the internet that drew me in. Just couldn't be ignorant to it with how much time I spend online. I enjoy it; the games are satisfying, the characters are inspiring and the fan works are great.

My past, right?

I had attempted to get into Touhou twice in the past, but it never worked. Until I found an manga while looking at Touhou art during last December, on the 4th or 5th (2025). It was a Reimu Marisa ship manga if I remember correctly. It was quite wholesome so it made me tear up. When I went to go find the rest of the artist's work on pixiv, no sign of life since like 2019, dead Twitter links too. So that made me quite sad. I guess in commemoration I became a fan, I've been hooked since.

(Also Sakuya was my favorite for a while because simply because of the many references she had to JoJo's (September 25th cant you come any faster?). Until I figured out the existence of Utsuho.)

1. memes
2. Eurobeat(particularly Sound Holic)
3. yuri is my guilty pleasure
4. wanted to try something new
5. Bad Apple (the 2007 remix)
6. I like japanese stuff
when: I've had my eye on it but wasn't particularly interested until recently. wanted to dive into the franchise, and also the Bad Apple remix is fire.

Come on now, I didn't say anything about that, I just thought anime girl with a big pair of wings was cool.
You didn't say anything about aya being one of the baddest, indeed, but hey, you never disagreed that she is one of the baddest1784639128353.webp

i saw bad apple, wanted to know what the game it was from (yeah, i thought it was a singular game, maybe two max) found out it’s from a game series call touhou project watched a touhou 6 play through said “dude this looks AMAZING!! Definitely won’t be able to beat this though.” So i immediately started my hyperfixation and ended up playing SoEW first!!

I heard here and there stuff about Touhou but I didn't really know what that was but at some point I read someone comment under a post about best indie game music with Touhou, so that finally grabbed my interest and I searched up Touhou on YouTube, I didn't understand anything at first but after I realized that it's a danmaku I instantly googled Touhou 1 and after like 2 hours of setting NP2 I started HRtP, since danmaku was a genre I wanted to get into for quite a while at that point
