Ayasuka is a nezumi necromancer living as a hermit on a farm near the Scarlet Devil Mansion, serving as a member of the mansion itself and furthering Remilia's cause.
He is mostly allowed to operate independently, scouring Gensokyo for lost knowledge, tomes, ruins and artifacts to further his own power and protect those he cares about.
He is also tasked with compiling what he knows for Patchouli so that it could be studied.
But before he was a necromancer, he was a young nezumi living in a small village in the Sanctuary of the Black Lotus with his twin sister Ayanna.
Life was difficult, but he wouldn't trade it for anything. In his spare time he would train in swordsmanship so that he could defend the village if the need arises.
One day an oni warband burned the village to the ground. Ayasuka tried to defend it, but he was too inexperienced and outnumbered.
He was struck down and left for dead until some passing Foxborn that were investigating the disturbance nursed him back to health.
Ayasuka was one of the few survivors of the attack, but Ayanna was killed in the chaos.
Devastated, Ayasuka swore an oath to never rest until his sister was avenged. Aki, the ghostly patriarch of the Shrine of a Thousand Swords, sensed bubbling rage of the nezumi and took him under his wing, training him to be a swordsman that channeled anger into a weapon.
Ayasuka confronted the five oni that led the warband and struck them down, taking their swords for his own.
Ayasuka would spend years wandering Gensokyo, searching for the peace that had long eluded him.
He avenged Ayanna, but he still felt the rage swelling in him. Not just for the burning of his village, but also for the horrors that he witnessed afterword.
Innocent humans devoured by youkai, peaceful youkai being hunted by overzealous exterminators.
He wanted to make sense of it all. First he joined the Buddhists, then the Taoists, but ultimately abandoned both religions when he concluded that they were hypocrites that focused more on enlightenment than aiding the innocent.
The gods? All they cared about was accruing faith. It was like a sick competition in his eyes.
Ayasuka would eventually stumble upon the ruins of an ancient order of necromancers that had been extinct ever since the Buddhists purged their numbers.
He poured over the forbidden knowledge, studying what had survived until he became the first necromancer Gensokyo had seen in centuries.
Many years later, he stumbled upon the Scarlet Devil Mansion while looking for allies that would help him achieve his goal.
He discussed and debated at length with Remilia about the morality of attaining power and found they agreed on many of the topics they touched upon.
Ayasuka swore to serve the vampire sisters in exchange for the knowledge he obtained.
Appearance:
Ayasuka is a male nezumi with white hair tied into a short ponytail with a thin black ribbon.
He wears crimson samurai armor and carries five swords on his person.
Abilities:
Necromancy: Through years of diligent study, Ayasuka has become an accomplished necromancer, the first in centuries.
These ancient spells are powerful, but require a chant to cast.
Weapon magic: Like his mentor before him, Ayasuka can use his swords as a magic focus as well as weapons.
He carries five swords on his person, each imbued with lightning or fire magic that can be cast through intricate slashes.
Danmaku:
Unlike most, Ayasuka's danmaku are shadowy needles that he casts in conjunction with his weapon magic.
This allows him to create elaborate patterns at the cost of dividing his focus between the two.
