Don't get me wrong, I love the locations we see in the official material, but I wish there were more locations that truly embody how dangerous Gensokyo can be.
Sure we read about a few of them occasionally, but we never see them either.
Let me give you an example. Last year I came up with an idea for a shrine haunted by a vengeful kitsune ghost that maintains an eternal vigil over the forest that surrounds the shrine. Trespassers would get a stern warning at best, but anyone caught trying to desecrate the shrine or the graves of his kin would never be seen again.
Due to how many people vanished in a short period of time at one point, it became an incident.

Basically I like the idea of locations that fully embrace the mythological aspect while adding to Touhou's world building. Doubly so if has the potential for own plot point.
I know that Touhou isn't meant to be dark, but it doesn't pull punches either.

I mean, I think we have some of these like the Old hell or The Forest of Magic but is true that we have few stories that actually showcases harsh scenarios about Gensokyo, for old hell the characters itself and for the forest of magic DiPP.

Oh I like that idea! Your headcanon is so cool, I wish it was official... but, for casualties, do you have decided where is situated? Is this a new forest or a forest that we already know about in Touhou?

But yeah, the idea of a Lonely creppy Kitsune guarding a Shrine is pretty cool!

The only thing similar in Canon we have is Tsukasa and well... we all know that she's not the most threatening one even if she could 😆

Hmm I personally think it haves potential but it depends as how one developes it. However, ZUN usually does it fine when it's about locations (heck even better than with his own characters at times) so yeah, it haves potential. And I don't think is completely far fetched either.

I know that Touhou isn't meant to be dark, but it doesn't pull punches either.
The problem with touhou isn't that isn't dark or that COULDN'T be dark... it's that ZUN just doesn't focuses too much in it. At least not enough to give them a whole story (like DiPP) or to make radical changes to Touhou and its lore, which i believe is touhou main issue with its formula (ironically, Ariya in Touhou 20 is the representation itself of the lore of the series).

The forest where the shrine is located is on the Youkai Trail between the Human Village and the Forest of Magic. It's a new forest that had been forgotten by most people.
The casualties that wind up dead are usually malicious youkai or monks that arrogantly try to "purify" the area.

And you're right about Tsukasa. She might be manipulative, but she's a mustache twirling villain that's more likely to cause a cat fight than an incident.

I wouldn't dream of having ZUN make any drastic change to what he's already written.
This is more of a personal preference.
As a historian who loves historical fantasy, I just wish there was more meat to the writing,
if that makes sense.

As you've said, the locations are given more attention than the characters ever will.
I think it's partially because I haven't found all of the details yet, but I think Gensokyo seems mostly empty as a world.
Everything I know about the locations in Touhou are from the Wiki, which only gives a brief explanation.

Ohhh!!! So cool!!! I really like the idea. Though, you have put a name to this forest yet? Or is that forgotten that nobody knows how to refer its existence? (If that makes sense)

Hmm, interesting. You could try to share more details about this new area that you have made? Like the sort of youkais that you can find or if there's more than just the Kitsune Shrine (btw you have put a name to the shrine too?)

Sorry if these are too many questions but it seems interesting to me 😅

Yeah, I can imagine her fighting over a piece of meat with Chen, LOL

I mean, I think Touhou is, at least, decent enough. It haves enough quality, quality that is hard to find sometimes in fan creations that aren't fangames...

The issue though, again, to me is that ZUN and its formula doesn't let him do much radical changes that could potentially change everything about the situation in the series and characters. For example, Sakuya who did seem that at first would have a very important connection with the moon and the lunarians but that at the end was canceled just because the implications of so could change a lot the relationships between some characters and, who knows? If Sakuya WAS Sakuyahime itself, then it could potentially change some settings if, you know, she tried to do something to Gensokyo.

That said, other example are characters in Touhou not dying. Like, I don't need to explain why is odd that a character isn't killed at the end, even when some of these have VERY valid reason as to why to be killed like, idk, Junko for attempting mass genocide, or Mizuchi for trying again to go against Gensokyo status.

I personally think that Touhou haves LOTs of meat to cook with (like Sakuya theories, The ministry of right and wrong, Makai (and PC-98 in general), the city of gods, etc).

But again, some of these aren't touched because they could change a lot the formula of Touhou... or just ZUN weird shenanigans.
As you've said, the locations are given more attention than the characters ever will.
Eh, sorta.
In general, both the fandom and ZUN, focuses more in the characters themselves and not too much in New areas or the exploration of these at deep.
What I do mean is that locations are better done and written by ZUN than his characters, which they aren't always as consistent or at the same level of quality than the locations and world building of Touhou itself.
I think it's partially because I haven't found all of the details yet, but I think Gensokyo seems mostly empty as a world.

I'm surprised for you to believe that Gensokyo is very empty because is a bit bigger than expected for a "little world" like this.
And the wiki only gives brief explanations because not a lot of them are explored and ZUN focuses more in specifically some like the Forest of Magic, the Forest of Bamboo or The Scarlet Devil Mansion.

But overall, in terms of quality, I dare to say that they are better done than characters which is both funny and astonishing at the same time!

Not at all! I enjoy thorough discussions like this and I don't mind answering your questions.

The original name of this forest was lost to history centuries ago.
It's denizens and the people who know of it call it the Sanctuary of the Black Lotus after the Black Lotus family, a clan of kitsune renowned by their peers for their swordsmanship and their musical talents.
In the ruins of the decimated Black Lotus estate, descendants of the original Taoist refugees that took shelter there mere days before it's destruction have turned it into a large village.

This sect of Taoists, called the Foxborn, act as the ghost's eyes and ears, providing the first line of defense against encroaching hostiles.
The Foxborn are also responsible for maintaining the shrine, named the Shrine of a Thousand Swords because the swords of the fallen became grave markers as well as offerings.
To plunder any of these once powerful swords would the equivalent to grave robbery.

The youkai that live within the Sanctuary are typically restless spirits that have nowhere else to go.
Kitsune and Tengu exiles have a settlement built on the main road, where travelers can barter for wares in exchange for information.
There used to be a smaller youkai village, but it had been ravaged by an Oni warband long ago.

First of all, let me tell you this is AMAZING and surprisingly creative. I wish that this existed in the series and that ZUN actually did let us explore this place someway (through a manga or even a game!).

Second of all, sorry for being toooo late. Isn't that I didn't thought that it wasn't interesting or something, is just that I have usually problems with motivation, hence why I weirdly interact here. But I always appreciate when people shares their headcanons and show their amazing skills.

And third of all, that said, I did get a bit lost so I would appreciate some clearing, if you wish.
Uhm, mostly, because if i didn't misunderstood, you implied that there was another shrine before the Shrine of a Thousand Swords? You know, the Black Lotus shrine? Called in that way because of this family of kitsune(?)? Because it can't be the forest name if you previously said that the forest name was forgotten, right?
And what about that small youkai village in the middle of the forest? And why those onis attacked the place? And who they were? And if so, then there can be found only that sect of taoist kitsune that are also vengeful spirits? Those would be my questions only. Sorry if it's a bit too much 😅

The original name of the forest was forgotten, but people who know of it call it the Sanctuary of the Black Lotus after the family. The shrine itself is called the Shrine of a Thousand Swords.
The Taoist sect are alive, but they live in the ruins of the family estate as caretakers of the shrine.
The small youkai village isn't anything significant, just a community that wanted to be left alone and live peacefully.
The oni didn't have much of a reason to destroy it. They mainly did it because they could.
