Musical Discoveries in Touhou Fandom

Recently stumbled to this album from Studio Nenem

All 16 of the arrangements are from th01 tracks.
It's all instrumental tracks, the genre seems to be mix of Traditional and Modern.
Ranging from Modern Orchestra, Swing, Chiptune and DnB, and even mix of Traditional and House.

Pigu/pigdevil2010 - AAABBHM ~ Tales of a Ghostly Field Club Girl and Her Puppets (Album Edit)
One of my favorite chiptune arrangers, though this obviously isn't an example of that. Quite a long medley, and I'm not sure it holds up all the way through, but still potentially worth sharing.


Occult Miko - Mysterious Inked Inventor ~ Monochromatic Laziness
A rare Len'en remix, apparently in the style of the most recent mainline game, though I haven't figured out the sound of that one yet (it can take awhile sometimes).


Aka Kyuketsuki - Witch of Love Potion
An even rarer non-Touhou-Zun-composistion remix, pulling out potential from unexpected places. I considered saving this for later, but it's good enough that I'd rather not hold on to it too long.

asi14 - Lunar Clock ~ Luna Dial
An unusual combination of fighting game style (7.5) and PC-98. I'm not always sure whether such specification are part of the title or not . . .


Miki Hiroyuki - Memory of the Road
I'm still technically in tournament mode, so a few Len'en remixes shouldn't be out of place.

Studio Nenem - Astral Sword Dance -Glory-
This is an alternate version of the arrangement DF posted a couple weeks ago, officially released exactly a year after its predecessor. I hesitate to use the term "remastered," but the concept comes to mind.


Hachimitsu-Lemon - Disappearing Queen
In contrast, a different remix of a different final boss by a different person. I'm not used to hearing vocal remixes from Hachimitsu-Lemon, but it sounds alright.


ESQUARIA - Disappearing Queen -Luon Remix-
The actual contrast of the same piece in a different style by a different person. I found these two at the same time!

this one is softer but the previous one had more impact

 
I have already mentioned this song in the Touhou cross-overs section, but I think this thread might be even better 
 

Scarlet Sky - Original Touhou Fan Song feat. TALI, Kylee Brielle

This song has been quite a surprise for me. Stringstorm, the creator of this thing, is already known in for his original songs themed around the universe of Warhammer 40.000. However, since last summer, due to a series of screw-up on the side of the IP owners of Warhammer in terms of fan-made content he has started exploring other series including BattleTech or making cheeky 40K parodies. However, he has also made a Touhou song. Most (myself included) would think this is the first time he delved into the wonderful universe of Gensokyo, but this is actually the second time. On 9/9/2019, Stringstorm made a metal cover for GO CIRCLE NINE. This song might seem weird for some, but I think the explanation is that this is an original song, not base on anything already existent. However, as he declared he likes this series, and the fact he basically stumbled upon a gold mine, we can expect more Touhou original songs in the future. 

All I want to say about Scarlet Sky is that, as the name suggests, is a retelling of the story from Touhou 6, from the perspective of Reimu.

Recently, I found myself revisiting an animation channel I once watched before my Touhou days began. One of their videos uses Bad Apple!!, which is how I was originally exposed to the song. However, the video only contains small parts of Bad Apple, as it is an unfinished animation parody of the famous shadow art video. What I did not realise, which I only noticed now by looking in the video's description, is that the version of Bad Apple contained in the video is in fact not the Alstroemeria Records arrange, but a different cover of it. So, I present to you: the first version of Bad Apple I ever heard - Draw the Emotional's version - now in full.

Turn down your volume for this one. If you're able, check for NicoVideo posts; the couple I found were better audio quality than this upload.
Otherwise, a good start!


mochiton - Peer to Peer
Selection is such a bizarrely normal name for a Touhou piece, eh? This is also poor-quality audio, but I loved the contrast of jazz to the other things I was finding. I had expected this to be a difficult piece to search for (due to the name), but there's surprisingly fair representation for it.


Autumn Sky - Blaze of Colors
EMLC is my favorite Reimu theme, so I wasn't too hesitant to use a big-name artist for it.
EDIT: Years later, I discover I somehow came to miscite this one to SoundOnline. It's corrected now; better late than never, right?

Sometimes, life happens, and you are forced to prioritize in ways you could not have foreseen. I am thankful for the time I have to engage with relatively simple pleasures.

Higan Daybreak - Reincarnation
Understandably, there are a lot of Reincarnation arrangements out there. I determined to seek out a less intense take on the piece, and settled on this one for its wispy sound and (ironically) prolonged progression. I wanted something to contrast the Complete Darkness feature, and this suited my needs perfectly in more ways than one.


Golden City Factory - Dim. Dream
For the most part, I've been avoiding arrangements I'm previously familiar with, but I will occasionally compromise for the sake of quality. There was another remix in an album crossfade that I tried to find, but without success.


Hidden Masquerade - Diamond-Studded Empty Sky
I was not expected the wide variety of options available for this piece; it's not one of my personal favorites, but it clearly has a following. Similar to the Reincarnation feature, I wanted something of lower energy than a symphonic metal piece, so I went with this.

Sound Refil - Manic Magic
There were several contenders for this feature, but this took priority. It's so happy! If anyone has the inclination, the NicoVideo link comes with a good animation/visualizer.


Sound skt sakabato - Ephemeral Dream, Unfulfilled Dream
My training in English grammar inclines me to capitalize the first letter of every word in a title, but I try to adhere to stylizations when they seem intentional; nonetheless, this one looks odd.
There were a lot of Zunish arrangements of this piece, but I used a Zunish last week, so I chose to avoid them. This is an interesting not-quite-symphonic/not-not-symphonic, where the rock undertones are clearly present but not forward enough to really define the track. I think it fits the source piece nicely.


Syrufit - sayonara
Something about the electro style appealed to my idea of the source, though I'd hesitate to explain how. This may not be as tone-heavy as Shionne normally likes it, but I know this is a circle he's familiar with.

ClumsyRecord - Fight it out!
A bit tamer than I set out to find, and surprisingly reminiscent of flip-cup-flop from the Unreal Mahjong soundtrack (something to do with the accompaniment harmony, I think). There was another arrangement by a circle called Watermill, but the audio quality was poor, so I decided to go with this instead.


Rami - Moment:_
Fun-though-confusing animation aside, I appreciate the tone of this arrangement. I'm not sure if it's the genre or musician's style, but it reminds me of Sonic Colour's Aquarium Park; chill, but with an active energy, mostly communicated through the contrast of the melody on piano and the accompaniment on lighter synth elements. However, I will admit to struggling at finding the familiar Sailor of Time motifs in this remix. Hopefully it's just me.


RichaadEB - Strawberry Crisis!!
Mostly as contrast to the previous features, but also because almost every arrangement of this piece is over-the-top symphonic metal, I went with a more straightforward but still high-energy metal remix. Perhaps this won't be a new listen for anyone, but I hope it will at least be an entertainingly fresh one.
