Musical Discoveries in Touhou Fandom

Chilled Sweet Regret - Seraphim
I feel like I don't often find Lost Word remixes suitable for this, but here is an unfamiliar circle with an extraordinary performance! My one complaint is that it's rather short, but that hardly detracts from what's available.

Hosen - Unlocated Hell
Hosen released very few remixes, but they stood out to me in their time, and I was quick to spot this one amongst the search results and secure it for this significant track. Give it time to develop, and appreciate the arrangement over the mastering (not that it's poor, but I suspect I've done it a disservice placing it after the other).

Neko Shokudo - Fortunes
This one was far more difficult to pick than I anticipated; several amazing arrangements presented themselves, and the only reasons this won out was the unfamiliar artist and slightly better contrast with the other pieces (genre adjacent still isn't ideal, but tonally this was the more distinct). The others will just have to wait their turn.

huurindo - emptymetropolis
I couldn't ask for a more fitting arrangement than this. The progression is a calm before the storm, serenity into passion balanced against each other. Back when T17 first released, I bounced between "Unlocated Hell" and "Beast Metropolis" as the better stage theme; I still think I prefer the former, but its remixes like this that remind me of the latter's equally exceptional quality.

MAIMAI - We are the Haniwa Corps!!
Options weren't lacking for this, but very few fit my expectations, even amongst the big-name circles. This isn't as hard or heavy as I was hoping for, but it maintains the progression and is an overall quality performance. I begin to think it's better for these features for me to have as little preconceived perspectives on a track as possible, so that I might more objectively estimate the presentation of a remix.

Atrufulgium - Electric Heritage
I had another one that could be considered "better," but I didn't think its energy complimented that of its followup as it should, so I'm saving it for another time. Such considerations are directly consequent of these tracks sharing nearly all their motifs, and while I believe ZUN has made it work in other instances, I've always thought it inadequately executed in this case.

REGYU - Entrusting this World to Idols ~ IDOLATRIZE WORLD
Y'all get four this week, 'cause it just didn't feel right splitting up "Electric Heritage" and "Idolatrize World." Back when I did "Pure Furies," the runner-up contender for the feature behind Sieudiver was REGYU, so I find this rather fitting. Unironically though, this was by far my favorite performance out of my findings (aside from maritumix's, but obviously that wasn't a fresh find).

Daredare-yodare - Swing or Be Eaten
Sometimes the perfect arrangement pops up without hassle. I would never have expected a remix like this based on the video preview. Or at all, for that matter; how often does Touhou get the big-band treatment (as opposed to other forms of jazz)?

KevNewgraha - Prince Shoutoku's Pegasus ~ Dark Pegasus
Unable to decide between a number of excellent rock and EDM remixes available, I instead went with this rough-edged Western-if-you-squint thing. In spite of the post-production, I'm inclined to appreciate the concept, and the execution is at least uniquely ambitious.

NFTO - OYASUMI!!
I actually recall NJune rather well (not true for all the artists I get to feature here). The style for this performance is certainly different than the other, but there's also something familiar between them that I'm struggling to narrow down on. Regardless, this is a familiar name I don't mind sharing again.

rpt - Returning Home from the Underground
Only one track left in T17, might as well get it in. rpt's been showing up fairly frequently in my searching of late, so it's only fair I fit something from their repertoire in; the PC-98 style suites a staff theme well, especially one with a familiar motif!

PAL-BLAC[k] - A Rainbow Spanning Gensokyo
Piano is popular for this track evidently. I favored this one both for the unfamiliar name and preference for live performance over MIDI's. It's a bit soft perhaps, but it's nonetheless a good arrangement, with some creative spectacle into the bargain.

hikane - Apparitions' Passing Rain Shower
Bouncy, for contrast! There's something funky going on in this, but I'm not convinced I know what it is, just the impression it's giving me (something on a deeper level than the modulation). I find the original somewhat underwhelming, so the mix-up is appreciated.

Q-Jiada - Kitten of Great Fortune
A new chiptune artist! Not quite what I'd anticipated for this track (thought for sure I'd settle on a vocal performance), but I don't want to pass up fresh name opportunities. This one doesn't seem particularly active, but their skill is evident in this arrangement.

Oh how I despise Daylight Savings.

Starstorm Alpha - The Cliff Hidden in Deep Green
I feel obliged to point out the artist's older alias of "Scalding Coffee Cup," to avoid ambiguity. Given the obvious arrangement skill on display here, I once again am reminded of how many excellent artists I've yet to hear, and what got me started on this whole thing to begin with. Seriously, this is such a fun rock performance, and of a rare sort these days with the domination of metal!

Boga - Banditry Technology
Deliberated on this one for a bit, but the deciding factors were as follows: A) I already passed up Boga for an earlier track; B) The runner up was of similar tone to the previously featured arrangement; and C) . . . actually, hold that thought for a moment. Anyways, Boga's an excellent hand at the "EoSD Arrange," and is worth appreciating in that light.

Virus Key - On the Fragrant Plateau of Komakusa
Normally I avoid medleys for this, but "Perpetual Snow" dominates strongly enough for me to give it a pass. Except the real reason is aforementioned C) The irony is too good to pass up. 'Cause the last time I saw Boga and Virus Key mentioned together . . . well, such are memories, and I'm a tad bit opportunistic. ;) In all seriousness though, both artists deserve the attention.

Mankindo - Smoking Dragon (quintetto arr.)
Underrated composition IMO, ironic as that may be considering how well covered it technically is. Jazz seemed the obvious choice to me, but for a while all I could find were EDM variants. Not too bothered though, 'cause this eventual is perfect; exactly the kind of sound I wanted, and with the slightest twist of oritental folk (not sure of the instrument's name; possibly a pipa?).

cube - The Abandoned Industrial Remains
"Abandoned" or "obsolescent"? I recall it being the former when the game released, but it wouldn't be the first time translations were improved upon later on.
Anyways, I clicked on this one with some hesitance, figuring I've done enough chiptune of late, but this turned out to be another level entirely, striking that perfect middle ground of classic and modern the genre is usually split between!

the tumbling we's - Standing in the way
Brace yourself. I fought myself over this one, but ultimately it's too unique not to feature, regardless of my reservations. I believe I see (hear?) the vision, and strongly suspect everything is exactly as intended; there's a fine line between "discordance" and "the wrong key," and while this tows that line a bit, it technically preserves the motifs it's adapting (if it had been in English though, doubt I could have tolerated it XD ).

The world won't end just because one guy doesn't like your music, he didn't insult you though the XD on the end wasn't exactly kind.

I myself haven't listened to it because I was preoccupied with work, but I would like to hear it and make my own opinion on it.
I believe that there is plenty of people that would like it even on this forum, don't worry you are not talking up my time, im open to any discussion.
If you want to talk about it a bit more then contact me through direct message or on my discord so we do not flood this thread further.

...It appears I just missed this.

FTR, I love music that stands out from the usual, and I didn't intend to be discouraging; the whole reason I shared the performance in question was due to appreciation for what it was accomplishing. I'll admit the closing comment looks bad out of context, being addressed to the forum and referring to my established commentary history; I often express personal distaste for English lyrics in arrangements, especially those performed in an unorthodox manner, but have been better able to apprieciate experimental styles in other languages. In hindsight, I should have been more mindful of how my words sounded, and I apologize for inadvertently upsetting someone by it.

EDIT: To reinforce my intentions, I went seeking alternative examples of the featured musical style (the genre is known as "garage rock"), and found an excellent parallel from Sekken'ya. As with the initially shared performance, the vocals are sung in discordance to the instrumentation, but preserve the melody of the source piece. While I don't often choose to listen to this sort of music, I have the utmost respect for the effort necessary to achieve its effect.
Sekken'ya - Mishaguji Empire

ONIWA - sly fox
I'm surprising myself with how familiar I am with these motifs, since I thought I hadn't listened as much to more recent entries (specifically since I started this project). I designate this arrangement as "chill," for having little to no progression (remaining stable throughout) but clear presence (not ambient). The title is apt.

Freshly-made Oscar & Ipiwai - Star Mist
Trying my best with the credits, Google Translate only gets me so far. There's a stark contrast between the rock music and soft-toned vocaloid; I wonder if it's intentional or happenstance? I admit I didn't look for the lyrics this time; I'd settled on this one for the feature, and didn't relish the effort expended to verify.

Nijiryu - Lunar Rainbow
Here I go again excusing a MIDI recording when I rejected them for other features. The reason this time is appreciation for the transcription process; extra effort was reportedly put into clarifying functionality in the notation, and I can respect that.

(It isn't always about how it made me feel by its sound; often it's more technical appreciation, respect for the effort involved. I'm not capable of enjoying all genres of music, but I still want to share things outside of my usual listening. When I feature anything, there's always something I appreciated about it; otherwise I wouldn't share it in the first place.)

Reirou no Hydrangea - Rainbow Fantasia
Funny thing; the production quality on this give me the impression this is a major doujin circle, yet I've never heard of them before (apparently founded in 2018). This puts me in mind to when I discovered Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets towards the beginning of this project, only finding out later how big a name they were. There always seems to be something new to find in the fandom!

Micro / M1cr0 - The Great Fantastic Underground Railway Network
Another chiptune, and of the PC-98 variety, yet a bit more than that this time as well. There's a lot going on here, and I won't pretend to be familiar with it all, but I'm more than happy to propagate such a unique effort.

Anyatsu - Dragon-King-Slaying Princess
Nice bouncy metal performance! Ya know how a really great remix can sometimes mess with your experiencing other remixes of the same source track for a while after? I've got that with these motifs right now, but it's more enhancing than hampering my appreciation, since I can more clearly recognize the method of adaptation at play.

Shout-out to "koga flandre" (@yuumafluffy) and their remix collecting playlists.

AFly222 - The Sunday After the Storm
You never know what you'll find for the ending and staff roll themes; maybe they're woefully underappreciated, or maybe they've accrued some of the highest quality rearrangements in the fandom. Synthwave of this sort reminds me of movies from the 70s and 80s.

Melody Man - A Rainbow-Colored World
The artist's comment has me slightly suspicious, but I'm choosing to believe it mostly in jest (and either way they're not wrong). Simpler style of chiptune; not really up my ally, but I know it's more appreciated by some.

Kale Hakaido - Everyday Is a Scarlet Day- Fight Mix!!
Did y'all expect this one? ; ) I was worried the "Dream Battle" interlude would have dissuaded the fandom from investing much in this piece, but it seems I needn't have. Beginning of this one is a bit choppy IMO, but it blossoms out well. Also have I really gotten this far without featuring Kale Hakaido?! o_0 Considering I've been appreciating their work for years, I'm surprised I never shared any of their original compositions at least.

For reasons shortly apparent, this week's feature is doubled up.

yasu - Submerged Hell of Sunken Sorrow (Mega-Drive Arrangement) & Fantasy Grimoire - Submerged Hell of Sunken Sorrow
Couldn't decide between these two. Is mega-drive always this punchy? Or is this a uniquely punchy production? Excellent application regardless. And the other is such a beautiful blend. Both do an excellent job at adapting the original's tone.

Maswaki - Depths of the Earth, Ocean of Avarice & Maswaki - [Alternate Version] Depths of the Earth, Ocean of Avarice (Rock Version)
My rule is that, if one part of a feature gets doubled up, the rest of it has to as well. As it so happened, Maswaki did this remix twice in slightly different styles, and the comparison alone is noteworthy enough to consider.

Mawariman (Albin Sendelbach) - Le Mouton & Lanae - Memento of the Avaricious Beast
I personally prefer "Avaricious Beast" over "All Organisms," but couldn't find an remix of the sort I was looking for. Sendelbach's arrangement I'm previously familiar with (11th Hour), and is an excellent performance in which I perceive a couple different orchestral styles (whether or not intended). Lanae's on the other hand came closer to the tone I wanted, somehow in what I would otherwise have presumed a gimmick; a reminder to me not to write anything off without at least giving it a shot.

Anyway, just wondering, does anyone have some kind of complete album that contains full version of songs listed in Danmaku Kagura Phantasia Lost? If possible in FLAC or MP3 (or one of those file types is ok). Suddenly i feel the urge to play those songs offline (in music player) and in full version.

Also, I found this thread is very good for collecting all fanmusic created by circles

The soundtrack to TDKPL is more of an ever-evolving compendium than a proper score, as is often the case with live-service rhythm games, and as such you are unlikely to find a centralized source of its offerings. If you know which ones you're most interested in, very likely they're available through digital music distribution platforms, albeit on an individual basis. It's possible someone has compiled a Spotify playlist or something similar for easy reference (I don't use that platform, so I couldn't say for sure).

For once I'm forced to search up the arrangements for this feature in real time. No skimping though!

Kotonoha Genso Tantpuchi - Under Greedier
Almost passed on this one when I couldn't find the lyrics' translation, but it was by far the most unique and impressive performance I found for the piece, and given the new name I couldn't risk passing on it. Interesting how the tone of rap remains familiar regardless of language.

Ringru Touhou Piano - Laws of Heaven, Desires of Man
Probably could have looked longer for this one, but I was inclined to presume less coverage, and happening upon this gentle and serene sounding cover from someone last featured back in T7.5, I'd just as soon take advantage of it.

Usami Kagen - Eastern Strange Tale of Avarice
Oh how I love looking for remixes of a track whose title is identical to that of the game from which it proceeds! Thankfully good ol' UK came in clutch, and I'd even say this is one of his better remixes.

My comments this week may be short, because I'm sick at the moment. Ironically the first two arrangements are themselves on the shorter side, so I guess it fits.

RED FOREST & Echollapsar - Great Wolf's Prayer (short ver.)
Unique vocal performance on this one (safe to say that, right?). I wonder why there's a "short version;" I briefly poked about for the implied longer track, but nothing was forthcoming.

Bit2 - Love Colored Black Market
Yo, it's Bit2! Happy to see him this far on; normally he does covers of other circle's arrangements, but this one is his own.

Azumain - An Exciting and Familiar Gensokyo
Still not crazy about MIDI piano covers, but there's some heart in this one. Anyways options were limited; there's a really good Jerico's Law performance, but given the opportunity I still want to prioritize niche names.

Been a rough week, and I'm worried it's effecting my efficacy in locating suitable arrangements for this feature. One way or another I'm out of time, so here's what I've got.

exali - Youkai Hook On!
So much going on here, but it's admittedly fun. Really my only concern is the extra bit at the end; it's been incorporated well, but it technically makes this a double remix, which I've usually avoided for these. I doubt it'll bother anyone else though, so . . .

Hakuzora - Black Markets Can Happen Anywhere, Anytime
When I go looking for a piano arrangement, this is the sort of thing I'm hoping for. There's an authenticity to this that MIDI recreations just can't capture, even when they're performed.

Lambert - the Dwellers of Bullet Hell
Returning artist, and with fair showings for it. The organ stands out to me as the stylistic focus of the performance, and it turns out to fit the motifs quite well.

REVERSE RESISTANCE - Into Eternity of the Blackmarket
Found this while searching for one of the other pieces, and immediately determined to save it. I feel the original lends itself to intensity, and this may be amongst the most intense performances I've ever heard! Feels like a proper ending arrangement, as indeed it should, although it's rather ironic for my purposes.

Kijiriki - A Beast's Intelligence
Sharp juxtaposition, but a fitting transition? I appreciate the degree of adaptation present in this remix, crafting the tone in addition to capturing the progression. It's simply too easy to copy over the main melody, add a standard accompaniment, and call it a remix; not enough creative exploration. So I appreciate when someone goes the extra distance, even when it's relatively simple.

Kay Lnk - The World Is Made in an Adorable Way
A particularly hard source piece to settle on, due to its deservedly excellent reputation and subsequent widespread coverage contesting with high expectations. This comes from a fangame soundtrack; I'm presuming the artist based on the assertion of "solo dev" and the lack of any contradicting evidences. With this pick I've hit the three major arrangement styles (high-energy rock, low-energy solo, and balanced-energy swing)!
