Making a Touhou-Inspired Song for a University Project

Widget

Onshi
I've got a university assignment to make two songs with relevance to my chosen career. I want to make videogame music so I decided to make one of them a ZUN-inspired touhou song. The song is called "Self-Proclaimed Yasha" based on an OC that ended up in a touhou-like RP (but not actually Touhou) and then it just kinda stuck. Not sure how many people will be interested in this, but I've began work on the song and so far only made a small piece of the song that will most likely be a chorus. I also need to fix up my Linux Distro to get VSTs on REAPER but that's a hassle and I can work on the instrumentation at university so currently I just have synths playing each part.

I'll update this thread as I go on. Curious on what peoples opinions are so far!

I think the melody is pretty catchy and enjoyable.
Also I'm pretty sure doujinstyle got a section for instrument/sound samples if you need any of that.

That'd be awesome. I've done some research so I know what the main instruments needed are, but if there's an actual section for touhou-style instrument samples that would be awesome. I was thinking about doing some shamisen sample stuff since the character is an old-fashioned samurai girl

feel so PC98 and retro
I suppose it does currently LOL. I'll probably make two versions considering I'll be doing the writing at home and the arranging at university, so one will be more PC98 and the other I'm aiming for a more IN kind of sound.

I have started working on the song again, and decided to add some instrumentation beyond just Reaper's default synthesiser. I have changed the melody for a flute, brought in a piano to do some arpeggios, changed the chord synth into some strings, and added a drum pattern. I do have the Drums used by ZUN in many songs called Gator Kit, but i currently couldn't get it to work without popping at the end of the samples, so I had to use a drumkit pack I already had that sounded kinda ZUN-ish but definitely isn't the full Touhou Style.

I also added a verse, with a koto playing the melody of that verse. I intend to change the Synths that I've called "Rhythm Gtr" for some actual guitar MIDI.

Would love to hear some critique and feedback!

hm, in 0:22, i think you should have a transition to make it smooth...... I just feel surprised bc the song changes the style so suddenly, the other parts look good. hope this good
