hello everyone!!! i'm new to touhou completely, and idk if it's normal for me to be THIS bad. i got the embodiment of scarlet devil like a week ago and have just been messing around on easy mode, but when i tried normal i got my ass kicked. i played as reimu and her spirit amulet so if i should try a different amulet or marisa pls lmk along with other tips. thx!!! <3
(p.s i'm not trolling i just kinda suck)1000009092.webp

I don't know too much about the EoSD remake on the Switch, but the Touhou games have a "focus" mode which slows your character down.
If you need help with the bullet patterns, I remember someone mentioning before how they see the bullets as a "maze" and try to find themselves through it.

Some more advice is that Reimu B (the second shot type) tears through bosses much easier, but at the cost of having to align yourself directly under the boss.
The remake also apparently lowered the damage for Reimu B, but the strategy should still work.
And ultimately, don't worry yourself about being bad at the game. I've played the games for over a year, and I've still yet to complete a 1cc for most of the games just on easy. You always have to be patient with Touhou.

oh okay cool thats good to know

1. Use bombs when you feel like you're about to get hit
2. If you don't care about the score but rather just to get a good ending, if you didn't do it yet, you can change the starting amount of lives in the options
3. If you have all lives in the classic mode (or 0 deaths in challenge mode) try to avoid the blue points (sorry but idk how it's called, the ones that give you extent when you collect enough of them) so that you wont waste extent by not getting +1 life with raised required amount of blue points for next extent

I find Marisa to generally be more useful in EoSD since she's faster and doesn't have a larger hit-box like she does in later games. EoSD is also filled with RNG heavy spell cards, and her extra damage will help you get out of bad patterns quicker.

You'll also want to anticipate what's coming up so you have extra split seconds to react. Try focusing your attention on the middle to middle-upper portion of the playing field when your character isn't immediately surrounded by bullets, observing which way the bullets are traveling. It's a difficult skill to learn, but it'll help immensely if you're able to master it.

Save your bombs for when you're about to get hit or can't escape a pattern (deathbomb, good reflexes). Most attacks target your character, so try staying still to keep them focused on you, since it creates a safe zone in the opposite direction.

I'm also playing EoSD seriously for the first time (having only read the works so far), so keep practicing the patterns to avoid making the same mistakes in future runs.

And use Focus. It's life-saving.

yeah it's completely normal. I didn't play the remake but I remember OG EoSD as being pretty hard anyway, it's normal to suck if you're new to the bullet hell genre, let alone touhou.

one thing I needed to do to improve was to get rid of my "RPG potion syndrome" as I like to call it, which is saving buffs or limited tools for later stages and ending up not using them at all. don't be afraid to use your bombs!!
