  • In any case, I don't think a commercial collaboration between Touhou and Arknights would be a good idea at all.

because it would open the floodgates for non-rythm gachas to collab with 2hu?
I am open to your questions about the Touhou community in China

I'm from mainland China. Touhou itself is not illegal here. China does restrict imported games, publications, and some online content, but that does not mean Japanese works are generally banned. One notable restriction is publishing: printed works need official approval to be legally sold, so many doujinshi exist in a legal gray area.

The Touhou community in mainland China dates back to at least 2004, first appearing on online forums and later spreading to Bilibili, Tieba, QQ, and other platforms. By 2009-2013, Touhou had become one of the defining symbols of Chinese ACG culture.

Last year, mainland China hosted more than 90 Touhou-only events. In both number and scale, this is second only to Japan, so I would say China probably has the world's second-largest Touhou community.

I think it depends on the era. When I first got into Touhou, most people discovered it through fan works such as MMD videos, hand-drawn animations, MADs, etc. Playing the original games was more optional, since the Chinese Touhou community has never required you to play them to be considered a fan.

Some people did discover Touhou through the original games, however, and many of them formed an important subgroup we call the “STG players.” They focus heavily on mastering the original games and often pay less attention to fan works. You can see many skilled Chinese players in this year’s Touhou World Cup.

After 2020, short-video platforms like Douyin became increasingly important. Many newcomers discovered Touhou through famous doujin music, while memes such as Fumo and Yukkuri also played a major role.

Thanks, it's really interesting to hear about this stuff since I don't really get many opportunities to talk to anyone from China.
Now that bilibili is going more global, will there be any movements among chinese bilitubers to introduce the chinese 2hu fandom in en bilibili and youtube? Since there's been so many touhou en youtube videos subtitled in bilibili, surely someone must be planning the reverse.

I’m actually not quite sure what you mean by “Bilibili going more global.” I have seen many videos posted by foreigners in the past few days, but the experience is honestly pretty bad: most have no Chinese subtitles or localization at all. So maybe Bilibili is trying to expand overseas? I’m not sure.

As for introducing the Chinese Touhou fandom to overseas audiences, I’m also unsure. Fandom/community research is quite niche even within the Chinese Touhou community, so I don’t know how many people would be interested. Maybe I could try it myself someday.

I also have to admit that many Touhou videos on Bilibili are reposted without permission. Recently, Bilibili held an event encouraging Touhou fan videos, and some people even reposted others’ work, marked it as “original,” and tried to profit from it.

I spent a minute doing some calculations, and Marisa has ranked second in the Touhou Project Popularity Poll 11 times, which is the most for any character. So, is it possible for her to win first place this year?
Even the best translation software in the world today has difficulty expressing what I want to say

LLMs are surprisingly good at translating, pretty shocked by that.
Considering that Touhou is a creator-centered community, I do not think seniority should determine one’s so-called “status” within the community. Or rather, emphasizing hierarchy in a doujin community is a foolish thing to do.

Over the past few years, I have seen many excellent new doujin creators whose contributions to Touhou are greater than those of many people who first encountered Touhou fifteen years ago. At the same time, however, I am also uncomfortable with the tendency to overemphasize “contributions to the community.” Touhou should be equal.
I oppose the act of registering a fan-created image of Orin as a trademark. Treating the shared tolerance within the fan-creation ecosystem as a commercial asset that can be privately appropriated is deeply unethical within the community, and legally unstable as well. This is not only disrespectful to fan creators, but also a trampling of the very spirit of fan culture.
Last year, the Chinese Touhou community organized the "Fumo Drifting Project." The planners mailed their Reimu Fumo plushie to various locations across China, allowing locals to take it on tours of local landmarks and record their personal impressions. Starting from Beijing, the Reimu Fumo traversed all 34 of China's provinces—a truly remarkable feat. I believe this was an excellent initiative that fostered a strong sense of unity within the community.
Alright, continuing on from Fate, is Love Live also considered more popular than Touhou in China? It should be another ip that's around the same level of popularity as Touhou overall, and I assume Love Live is more popular than Idolmaster in China.

I’m not very familiar with Love Live, and it’s hard for me to judge which is more popular between it and The Idolmaster. Both IPs have had breakout moments over the past few years. However, based on my experience on Bilibili, I feel that Love Live is slightly more well-known.

In its earlier years, Nico Yazawa was a popular source material in Bilibili’s MAD scene. Later on, there were also Chinese characters like Zhong Lanzhu and Tang Keke. In particular, Tang Keke made Love Live! Superstar!! extremely popular during that period.

On the other hand, Gakuen Idolmaster also had a brief surge in popularity a few years ago, mainly centered around characters like Kotone Fujita and Hiro Shinozawa.

Overall, though, neither of these IPs is particularly thriving right now. Public attention has largely shifted to BanG Dream!, especially because MyGO and Ave Mujica achieved unprecedented success last year.

I think I underestimated the popularity of Touhou on TikTok. I just posted a meme picture and got 1,500 likes.

Touhoutok is basically it's own sub-community in the Touhou Fandom. It's genuinely insane. I used to be a part of it myself but i distance myself, cause of how many fans there are so closed-minded and will die on a hill over the tiniest stuff.
