    Offline events include: the third Nanjing THO being reported and shut down, the Harbin THO being canceled, and infighting within the Shandong Touhou community. Online events include: controversies arising from the use of AI-generated MMDs, issues with doujin games, and a person using a Youmu avatar posting hate speech, leading to Youmu being targeted on the Chinese internet. Well, this is damn postmodernism.

    Cirno is a character with over 20 years of history, yet she remains incredibly popular, as if she just appeared. I think this indirectly demonstrates Touhou's enduring appeal

    Since Umamusume seems to still be going strong in th west (not to mention how it made many western touhou artists jump ship), what's the chinese consensus on Umamusume? It doesn't seem like it's as popular as Blue Archive there (similar to the rest of the east asia). Has there been any dramas regarding it. any conflicts with the Touhou fanbase in China, and do Touhou fans in China have any strong opinions on Umamusume?

    Well, the situation with Uma Musume is somewhat special, and I’ll try to describe it in English as much as possible.

    From 2018 to 2021, Uma Musume enjoyed considerable popularity in China, and naturally a community formed around it. However, considering that China was going through a surge of gacha games at the time (mainly led by Genshin Impact and Arknights), it never reached a truly “phenomenal” level of heat. Even so, its online animated series did become very popular.

    Nowadays, Uma Musume is indeed very popular in China, but not really because of the work itself. The main reason is the emergence of a viral meme. This entire meme comes from episode 12 of the second season of Uma Musume, around the 10:40 mark, where Tokai Teio hums the “Honey Song.” Because the Japanese word “はちみつ (hachimitsu)” sounds very similar to the Chinese-sounding phrase “哈基米,”(hajimi) it gave rise to a unique subcultural community.

    However, Chinese fans of Uma Musume consider this meme to be offensive, much like how the cookie is perceived within the Touhou community. People do not actually care about Uma Musume itself; instead, they focus solely on posting “哈基米” memes across major social platforms.

    At present, the Chinese Uma Musume community has already distanced itself from the 哈基米 community. “哈基米” has been completely deconstructed—it no longer refers to the original content and has instead become part of a complicated, hard-to-understand amalgam of niche subcultures.

    Today, the Chinese government issued Japan-related cultural restrictions. A large number of scheduled performances in China have been forced to cancel, and exchanges in the relevant cultural industries have also been restricted.

    Naturally, many Touhou events have been affected. I think it’s likely that we’ll rarely see Japanese Touhou doujin music circles coming to China next year.

    Touhou communities don't appear out of thin air. I've seen many people complain that their schools don't have a Touhou community, but it's not anyone's fault. You have to learn to build one yourself

    If I buy a game for the purpose of "Touhou Doujin game", I hope most of the content of this game is related to Touhou. I can accept the appearance of original characters, but I hope it remembers that it is a "Touhou Doujin game"

    China Koishi Only will be held in Shijiazhuang next year. This will be the second "character-only" expo for the Chinese Touhou community. Given the rapid growth of THO events in recent years, a more diversified expo format is welcome. However, there are currently no "game-only" expos (e.g., showcasing only TH13 content), which is something the Chinese Touhou community should learn from Japan.

    I have seen some such doubts even on Japanese Touhou Twitter, so I am not surprised.

    Alright, so besides the "p-word" as you mentioned before, what are some other grievances or criticisms Th Chinese fans have against BA and its fanbase? One of the arguments /jp/ talks about is how it only seeks to emulate only the most popular otaku stuffs from the past to cater to the comiket crowds, and doesn't have anything unique to hold to itself, whether its the gameplay or the story. (the sentiment on the chinese side is probably the same, but I just wanted to know if they said anything different)

    Have you played TH20? This game has sparked heated discussion within the Chinese Touhou community, including, but not limited to: ZUN should retire, the danmaku design is terrible, the music is regressing, and the new characters are unremarkable.

    Bhrjr, I scrolled through one of Chinese forums and I saw several unusual takes, mostly about characters: some people doesn't like "pieces of fabric" on Ariya and Yuiman, they want normal clothes; and that ZUN is "disrespectful" to his lore and characters (Toyohime). But there was one funny complain that ZUN took patterns from Toby Fox (but it looks like this complain is not very serious).
    But there were also uncaring comments and even some defending ones.
    I Haven't checked other forums yet.

    What did they mean by being disrespectful to the lore? ...and Toyohime..?
    I guess by lore, they mean how things like data and ai aren't relics of the past, and doesn't make sense for them to be so prominent in gensokyo. But Toyohime doesn't seem to be portrayed any more negatively or positively than in ssib, so not sure about that one.

    Bhrjr, It was more related to situations when ZUN retconned characters or show them as weak, stupid (FDS manga), saying things about characters that many people may not like (Yukari) or not paying enough attention to characters or places (Lunar Capital).
