It's... Late. Dark.
I don't remember how I got here, I just... After everything happened back home I knew I had to get some fresh air, so I ran.
I look into the sky, it's overcast. Tiny droplets of rain hit my glasses on occasion, blurring the lines of reality in the form of the lines on the pavement.
I hear breathing behind me. I quickly turn, but see nothing.
Heh... I really am...
"Crazy?"
I jump so high that I fall to the ground with a thud. Rubbing my leg where I fell, I look up to see... A phone booth. It's old, like one you'd have seen in the 80s back in my home town. The walls are all glass, and inside there's a purple phone hanging from a rusted green box, the disconnection tone is loud enough I can hear it from outside.
Right... I must have walked over here and forgotten. I have been wandering aimlessly after all. But even still, although it's nothing special, something draws me to the phone booth. Maybe it's just the rain getting my hair wet, or nostalgia, but whatever it is, I enter the booth.
The tone is much louder on the inside. A solid, shrill sound. I pick up the phone, and dig a coin out of my pocket. I stare at it.
My last quarter. Am I really about to...?
Without thinking any further I insert the coin into the phone box, I hear it fall inside with a clink. Holding the phone to my ear, I dial a number.
As soon as I dial it, I forget what it was. I was so sure about dialing it, so how come I couldn't...
Before I can think, I hear a voice come from the other side...
"Moshi moshi?" The voice is strangely unsettling for a reason I can't explain.
"Hello...?"
A moment of silence passes.
"Behind you..."
I slowly turn my head, half expecting to see whoever is on the other end of the phone standing there, but instead, I see nothing but a lone kitchen knife laying on the ground.
I stare for a moment at it, before something compels me to reach down and pick it up, and instantly I'm overwhelmed with a horrible sense of dread.
Looking frantically at my surroundings, I see that I'm still in the box, however the box is not still in reality. Instead of the lonely street I was on, there's a forest, with glowing mushrooms at the foot of many of the impossibly tall trees. I catch a glance of a figure in my periphery, but it's gone as soon as I saw it.
It's then that I see it. I look down to see an eye staring back at me, attached to strings, which are attached to me.
I scream, and without a second thought, I plunge the knife into the eye; and the phone drops out of my shaking hands. I hear a solid, shrill tone...
I much prefer the idea that Koishi is really nice and friendly and not evil, but I couldn't resist writing something more scary related to her.
