Touhou lost media

Welcome to the Moriya Shrine forums, Dioxaz! Recognize you from your posts on Touhou MMD and for your translated subtitle work. Looks like MMD animations are getting added to the Lost Media thread.

Hello everyone
Hello Dioxaz. Welcome to this forum. Thank you for your findings and information, it really helped a lot.

Now about [東方] ハルノカケラ by シオビ, I swear I saw the original source posted on post 1 once. Anyway, this was originally posted on a BBS (see post 57), and its download link was thankfully saved by the Wayback Machine. This is actually the original source, before being uploaded to Nico.
Added to the post.

I only saved a few videos, as I was only interested in their (not so bad) 幻想闘演目 MMD drama series. 4 or so episodes were produced with a presumably lost episode (due to HDD failure) resurfaced in 2021. If anyone has the rest (which is very unlikely), please share. Meanwhile, this is what I saved.
a piece of MMD animation that was recently reposted on Bilibili and simply named "【东方老物】东方文花帖 附赠CD提取PV"
Added to post too. Sadly, I don't know more info about this.

That will be it for the moment, but I'd like to bring your attention to lost MMD models, in particular those by Mudspike/ImpulseJP. Everyone remembers their Marisa, but less their maid and enemy fairies models. Marisa is still available on 3d.nicovideo.jp but the fairies are lost to time. It's sad to see such iconic models (notably very brilliantly used by カーボン士 on Let's Take This Outside!!) vanish. One of their filenames were:

- zakofairy20131223.zip
- fairymaid20130820.zip
Touhou MMD model data
Added to the post.

In the future, if interested I may share more obscure animation (not totally lost but unavailable in decent quality for 2020s standards).
That will be great.

Again, thank you for your information.

Thank you for the info. Added.

Here is another discovery from Sshori’s blog, this time on a game called 東方知霊奏 that was created by doujin cirlce AloMarron.

QuestionAnswering.webp.70eab62b5d56fc4267c9a4fce9447557.webp

東方知霊奏 is described as a “QUIZ x STG” which had the player answer quiz questions while dodging danmaku. Additionally, this game had online support for multiplayer, where tournament matches of up to nine players competed for the best score by answering the questions correctly while dodging waves of danmaku for each question.

Score.thumb.jpg.28cc8dd6a1e28060e1bda6705615bb5f.webp

By the way, this game did not limit itself to one question format, instead opting to use multiple question formats, such as multiple choice, true or false, spell the word, fill in the blank, etc. Also, question genres were not restricted to only Touhou and as such there was genre like gaming, science, and sports to name a few genre that could be selected. Speaking of selection, the game was able to quickly describe the question format and question genre to players with a “spiritual score” that used musical notation as shorthand to describe the upcoming set of questions.

CreateQuestion.webp.2e3c2383122916011822fc055d484554.webp

Moreover, players were not restricted to answering a default set of questions as players had the option to create their own set of questions. That pretty amazing for an online quiz game. Plus, the visual presentation and soundtrack work together with the forest fairytale vibes its tries to build on. Overall, I say 東方知霊奏 is a pretty Touhou quiz game, if this game was still playable in 2024.

Lobby.webp.646d35b17b9fbb55dbc9c2d75590778d.webp

As a piece of lost media,東方知霊奏 was an online Touhou game and its servers have been long shut down, rendering it online multiplayer unplayable. Nevertheless, AloMarron distributed versions of 東方知霊奏 as physical discs for doujin events, so finding these discs should hopefully contain software still playable offline. But that is not the only release to be searched for. What if I told you that there was a playable Unity port of 東方知霊奏 on iOS?

As a preview iOS release, this iOS version was not on the app store and instead people had to buy a download card from AloMarron that contained a serial code for iOS users to download the game on their device.

iOSCard.thumb.jpg.ac089e1c27a1888ab0d27d3267248462.webp

Anyway, 東方知霊奏 is not the only release of AloMarron that should be considered lost media. According to this catalog on Suruga-Ya AloMarron released Touhou games from 2010-2016, but most of these releases are location test versions of his Touhou games. Of these releases, AloMarron released four other pieces of Touhou fanworks:

Great finding. Added to the post.

It is quite interesting to see a Quiz X STG Touhou fangame. I have see STG x singing, STG x Rhythm and STG x OSU fangames before (technically, the first one is not a fangame). But seeing such old game which also had IOS port is really interesting.

@vanyk, @Pinky Cat You're welcome. Please note that my translation abilities are in fact very limited, I mainly assist in extracting subtitles (from hard-coded ones) and timing them. But I really like making more obscure or overlooked works more accessible because I'm certain they deserve it.

Okay, here are 2 obscure animation efforts that I acquired recently.

View attachment 5537View attachment 5538View attachment 5536
First is a PV DVD released in 2008 called "東方紅魔郷 ARRANGE PV" by circle "WITCH☆CRAFT" and featuring a very nice and early Reimu 3D model by ISAO. This was obviously made before the MMD era (MMD just came out or hasn't come out yet by the time this animation was produced). This isn't lost media yet, but only very bad quality reposts exist of this. So I'm posting a full DVD rip here. Now unfortunately, I couldn't make an ISO because the disc had very bad corruption or burning defects despite looking prestine, but I was able to copy all the files at least. That's why all the datestamps are wrong (they should normally read 14th of May 2008 at 7:52AM). There is also a very annoying interlacing glitch throughout the whole PV which makes the picture look very jittery (when deinterlaced properly). Probably an authoring bug or sign of amateurism. Some video expert might be able to fix this.

186045721.jpg.webp

Second is a very well known dogfight animation from Mudspike (oh, what a coincidence again). Catalog number is MUDS-0001. This is the Reimu vs Utsuho fight. This already exists in 720p on YouTube on the creator's channel, so far from lost media (unless the creator melts down). But this DVD edition offers much better quality and even a subtitleless version. I'm offering a full ISO this time.

More will come later. A DVD ISO rip of 東方奇闘劇 3 from AQUA STYLE (only exists in very low quality uploads) and some very obscure thing called "東方見聞録" by circle FRAGILE ONLINE released in 2004, if I'm not lazy.

Okay, as promised. About 東方奇闘劇 3, I don't need to post anything as it has been archived on the Internet Archive already and there's a full DVD ISO there. You can also find 東方奇闘劇2- Supreme Duels as a DVD ISO, so the best imaginable quality (compared to typical late-2000s/early-2010s potato uploads). For those who don't know about them (or people stumbling across the post via a search engine), they were animated works made by AQUA STYLE mimicking game cutscenes. They also featured very nice voice acting.

東方見聞録 by circle FRAGILE ONLINE, released in 2004 (DVD authoring date: 22nd of June 2004). This thing is 20 years old! I'm offering a full DVD ISO. I wasn't aware but this circle seems to be Taiwanese. There are multiple segments consisting in a series of illustrations with dialogue at the bottom. The first segment is narrated by a male Taiwanese voice-over (with a funny distortion in the audio). There's one segment called Luna Dial which reminds of those Touhou Soccer animated shots (I haven't checked if they were made by the same artist or not) that has very poor video quality. And no, this is not due to the limitations of DVD (bitrate is a steady 7Mbps throughout the whole thing), but they probably had a very low quality asset to begin with (or their MPEG2 encoder was very poor).

Not sure if we have the first Touhou animated doujin release here (it's only 2 years after the official release of Touhou 06), but it is a nice piece of history nonetheless.

Some very keen observers will notice the weird scaling artifacts on the video, when watched on a regular modern display. This is because the whole thing was produced at a resolution of 640x480 then loosely scaled using nearest neighbour to the standard 720x480 of NTSC DVDs (you never want to do that). Scaling it back to 640x480 using nearest neighbour will give you the correct picture back.

@Dioxaz, thank you for these interesting findings. I am sorry I didn't replied earlier. It is really interesting to see such old animations.

About 東方見聞録 THBWiki says that FRAGILE ONLINE is from Japan, not from Taiwan. They could collaborate with someone from Taiwan or that may be a Taiwan translation for this animation or there could be a circle in Taiwan with the same name (this is unlikely). They could publish this (or another/previous version of this if it existed) on the first Reitaisai or on Comiket that year, but it is hard to check it.

Again, thank you for the information.

Alight, I have been researching about Touhou mobile apps thanks to Sshirori’s blog posts on Touhou mobile apps. As such, I have compiled a list on Touhou apps. This list will not have every single Touhou app as most apps, but only the apps appeared to have original content created for the app itself.

Lost Mobile Touhou Apps

These apps were released to the public at some point in time, but cannot be played today.

アプリ – パルチェッカ | ゆっくりえらんでいってね!! | めずらしいたけ ~Uncommon Shiitake Mushroom~

By: Muraoka Lab

Platforms: iOS

Sources:

=====================================================

Muraoka Lab published アプリ – パルチェッカ and ゆっくりえらんでいってね!!to the iOS app store, but めずらしいたけ ~Uncommon Shiitake Mushroom~ was not published on the app store.

Also, ゆっくりえらんでいってね!!was featured on the magazine iPhone Magazine which appeared to have been published for January 2010. That is all I can say on the matter as searching information on iPhone Magazine is difficult with its generic name, so any info about this Japanese Apple magazine would be appreciated.

These apps were delisted in 2011 as the author found the apps to be low quality, using the 2011 ZUN’s guideline changes as an excuse. The guideline changes involved the prohibition on the sale of Touhou works on mobile app stores without ZUN’s permission.

おどってゐ is a sequencer that also creates custom dance routine with Tewi. Also, there a 2016 MAD video using art from this app, using Tewi, black Tewi, and Reisen? It a bit strange since the artist's Pixiv, does not use the おどってゐ artstyle outside of this app, which either means the MAD creator made a reproduction of おどってゐ's artstyle, the artist has more art outside of Pixiv, or the art came from the app itself.

東方⑨時計 is a Cirno-themed clock app.

東方機巧音匣 is an alarm clock app that uses Touhou doujin circle music as alarm music. There also two mini-game included: a true/false math equation game and a quiz about choosing out of two Touhou characters which one of them appeared earlier in the series.

This app was also paid, which means Dwango got permission from ZUN and mutiple Touhou doujin circles to publish on mobile app stores. FYI, this app was released after the 2011 guideline changes.

Lost Mobile Touhou Apps
Great findings. Added info to the list.

It seems like there are still some links to iOS app store for some apps you listed here.
Example: https://apps.apple.com/jp/app/dong-fang-ji-qiao-yin-xia/id475658394
I don't know if they work (it doesn't load for me)

+ I found some sites which listed some Touhou apps:
https://dotapps.jp/hierarchies/QNimF5FK1I02h8c2
https://applion.jp/iphone/topic/190173/ (half an hour ago it was up, do now for some reason it is down)

Before I forget to post this, I have uploaded collection of scans for ZUN's column Which Came First, Hakurei Kannushi's Games or Beer? to Internet Archive. This collection contains the scans by Touhou Wiki and MoTK, plus new scans from February to May of 2018, the last 3 months of 2019, and then the rest of the columns for 2020 until the latest issue of January 2025.

The app store link don't load for me either, so I suspect it just means the app has been delisted rather than a connection issue.
I see. Well, it seems like App Store won't help.

Awesome. Thank you for collecting these scans. Added to the list.

@vanykThe Fragile Online DVD had "made in Taiwan" at the back, which probably confused me. Thanks for your info. It looked odd to me that I assumed them to be a Taiwanese circle, I looked a bit further and it appears that at least the lead member, Yu Shimoda, is obviously Japanese. Still, the Taiwanese voice-over was an odd choice. By the way, I bought that from Japan (Suruga-Ya perhaps, I can't remember) so I doubt this is a specifically Taiwanese release.

The main reason I'm posting is because of the partial meltdown (how surprising) of "iconic" MMDer Siraseuni (白瀬うに) who recently (at least after 2023) privated her Red Alert series. Now this isn't lost media as reprints exist on Bilibili but it's better to keep an eye on this one, as TouhouSubs' translation of the series is also gone due to quitting his YouTube channel in 2018 (and YouTube auto-privating unlisted upload in 2021). So here's the Red Alert Touhou MMD series in its entirety (episodes 0 to 7.1, remakes of 1 and episode 5.5 are also included), all with English subtitles from TouhouSubs. All original uploads from Nico (original smile encodes), no reencodes there. 9 episodes were planned originally but the series was aborted after episode 7.1 due to a computer/data loss incident.

白瀬うに has to be one of the most hilarious case of careless, unreliable and stubborn artist (my words might not be strong enough) I have ever seen in this MMD scene. Basically lost her mind after her hard drive incident in 2015 and has never recovered since. Always plans things to never complete (or work on) them afterwards. The most notable is the silently aborted Scarlet Alert project from 2015. There's also a collab video in 2018 that was never done, and a "reboot" project called Marisa-chan announced in 2019 that never saw the day. Spends her time between multiple long periods of hiatus/inactivity and locking-unlocking her Twitter/X page. Her last dumb (for me) move was privating an iconic and inspiring series such as Red Alert. What happens inside this woman's mind is a total mystery to me.

Now compare that to another iconic MMDer such as キューリ (author of the Mushishi Wriggle and Scarlet Karakasa series) and it's night and day. As an example, handling a similar data loss incident was piece of cake for them, as they did have backups. キューリ also seems to be a very nice, well-adjusted and fast-learning guy. By the way, Mushishi Wriggle has just started being translated into English by PoGu.

The Fragile Online DVD had "made in Taiwan" at the back, which probably confused me. Thanks for your info.
Hello. Thank you for your information. I am glad my info helped you. Perhaps they participated in a Taiwanese doujin event and they printed copies there, maybe they had some other reasons for printing their copies there.
It seems like FRAGILE ONLINE published that DVD (or FDVD-0001) on C66. I found that Suruga-Ya page. But I couldn't find anything more useful about that. I only found some photos of the disk online.

So here's the Red Alert Touhou MMD series in its entirety (episodes 0 to 7.1, remakes of 1 and episode 5.5 are also included), all with English subtitles from TouhouSubs
Added. Well, their behavior is strange to me too, but it seems like some creative souls act like this.

That is really nice. Interesting info.

THKaguyaMod 2.93
Minecraft 1.7.10 mod which adds a lot of things related to Touhou. The latest available version is 2.91.
Source: https://openeye.openmods.info/mod/thkaguyamod
I have done some investigation into this, and I have reason to believe version 2.93 does not exist, or at the very least developed by the original creator. Firstly, going through the original forum page for this mod has never shown any update past v2.90. The second reason is that searching up "thkaguyamod-1.7.10-2.91.jar", leads to a mod pack called Touhou Online ~ Master Spark!, which includes thkaguyamod as part of the mod pack. Due to these two reason, I believe that v2.93 is simply some sort of accident born out of including the mod in a modded server as the only mention on OpenEye for both v2.91 and v2.93 share the same file name, thkaguyamod.

Is there any patchnotes that might come with v2.91 that might enlighten on the differences this update did to the mod? I would hope it did more than bug fixes and server support.

Though it seems their contact info is through a “messaging app that is not TG (Telegram).” I don’t have the patience test out messaging apps for the time being, so I leave this info for others to check into.

There are no patchnotes, but I compared files between v2.90.1 and v2.91 and can say that v2.91 doesn't have one Mystia's spellcard which v2.90.1 has, but v2.91 added more spawn eggs, changed some AI behavior (?). These are all differences I found.

I didn't really get what he meant. How does he want people to contact him?

Without having played the mod itself, or much of Minecraft for that matter, that sounds like a good chuck of content for a minor update. Good to know that v2.91 offers some form of changes.

It seems you need to friend request him on a popular messaging app that is not Telegram. What app he is talking about is unknown to me, but I am sure asking for contact in the Youtube comment section should hopefully give a response.
