why do people seem to dislike zun's art?

Buwako

True God of the Boriya Shrine
i have seen some people before say things along the lines of "zun's art is bad" as kind of like the punchline of a sort of joke. although i've never really thought of his art as "bad". in fact i think its actually really good, especially the newer ones.

i mean, sure. its not the most aesthetically pleasing like how alphes or moe harukawa's artstyle is. but, it still has it's unique charm to it. the older ones (and by that i mean the ones that are like 6-12) have a comforting home made feel to them. the newer ones don't really have a lot of a homemade feel anymore, but i still like them a lot because it has it's own sense of personality that i love.

am i just looking into to it too deep and it's just simple jokes, or do people genuinely not like the artstyle?

While the art can be charming, I think zun's art is generally bad. Some of his art is better than others but I would say the majority is objectively bad, especially compared to other anime style games. For some reason, zun is very good at designing characters but not at drawing them, so that's where a lot of the fan art comes from, although I think generally most fans agree that the games themselves make up for the art's poor quality.

I don't hate the art of the early games. I think it's kinda charming. I just think some people don't like them, because some people can't really look past it.

I don't necessarily hate the style, it's pretty charming all things considered, but frankly he doesn't try that much in bettering his art
Sure, comparing th06 and th12 alone has a pretty big improvement, ever since th13 and him going to digital coloring, his skills are at a plateau.
