Buwako

True God of the Boriya Shrine

Green Reimu

I don't think people hate Sanae, not to that extent definitely. Some definitely can't let go of the fact that she was an antagonist once, that much is true.

yeah so was like every other playable character in touhou lmao. is it just double standards?

I don't think people hate Sanae that much. As for double standards, I think a rivalry between shrines is a unique aspect between the two characters, I'd say that would be more of an aspect.

i've seen some posts on different social platforms like reddit and youtube saying how shes a terrible character n all and some people even say shes a rip off of reimu. the fanbase definitely has a hate boner for sanae but it has died down a bit.

i do like the rivalry between reimu and sanae. i think this can be a good base for a lot of interesting things to happen and it also can be a good comparison between the outside world and gensokyo.

if people dont like her because she is reimu's rival.. thats kinda of a dumb reason to hate a character ngl. especially if they grow to be nicer to the protaganist later on. can you imagine if the ace attorney fanbase hated edgeworth because of this reason?

That's your problem. You're on Reddit. I have not seen all that much dislike for Sanae on the internet but It would make sense for Reddit dislike a character who just wants to help others.

Lol, those that say such shit didn't read when ZUN said that he did take inspirations from her and Marisa.
Not even that, but they can't have (or care) a good comprehensive lecture of both characters, because Reimu and Sanae are like literally opposite of each other in each sense.
The only thing that they're similar is in being shrine maidens, and that's it.
And not even that, because again, their situations as shrine maidens are opposites even LOL.

And no, she is a very decent character, and IMO, one that had better development than Sumireko, the one that literally tried to stole her whole "Oh no, I'm now a isekai girl!".

...reddit and youtube...
Yeah, that's the problem.

I think people just like to ragebait people who like popular characters. In my opinion, Sanae hate is not a big trendy thing. There are more characters that deserve to be disliked.

As for Edgeworth, I do dislike him, but more due to his character, rather than his relation to Wright.

people hate my daughter? Blasphemy.
I agree.

but It would make sense for Reddit dislike a character who just wants to help others.
I think it goes beyond that.
It seems that people think that she's very simple in comparison to other characters (principally in comparison to the other protagonists) just because she isn't as charismatic like other (the best proof of this is UM extra where she can't keep up with the discussion by being around of most charming and dominant personalities).
To me is personally very dumb to hate her just because her simple personality.
Yeah she may be a bit simple in comparison to others like Sakuya or Marisa, but she's a VERY good contrast to all of them, which is the main reason why I think ZUN adds her so much as a playable character (and I can't blame him, I think is a good idea).

And there are other arguments too, but they're very dumb or immature to even consider it as valid.
From unsensical comparisons to other characters, to the point of saying that she's powerful for no reason (like if that was something rare in Touhou LOL).

The only other argument that I could consider as "valid" is her relationship with her gods, but even that one can easily be explained that she's not necessarily "simple", but that she was influenced by them since her childhood, which did further reinforce some same interests that they now share (like science) thus making each other more similar and of course, friendly toward each other.
But i also think Sanae has developed a very big sense of trust to them, and sort of idealization even (which explains why she is weirdly against their actions). Basically, Sanae relationship with them can be explained as that she just haves a LOT of trust in her gods and that they all developed some sense of friendship over time.
I personally don't understand why some people find so difficult to imagine her relationship with her goddesses.

While I agree that she doesn't receive much hate, she's noticeably more disliked than the other protagonists.
Which is a shame, because she wouldn't have such mistreatment from the western fandom if they actually informed themselves and tried to understand her or see think from other perspective.

Thank God at least Sanae is very loved in Japan, it seems that she was between the top 10 or in 13th place when the popularity poll has been done in 2025.

I think that comes more from the character she is.

Reimu is usually portrayed in fandom as a lazy, "let's get this over with" attitude person, with money problems. Seems pretty relatable for the masses.
Marisa is a sly thief, witty, goofy, funny to watch.

I won't get into other playable characters, so here's the main point:

Sanae, compared to others, is a bit normal. Divine heritage and all that disregarded, let's look at the personality. Dutiful, diligent person. Sometimes silly, making references to outside world stuff, but not necessarily relatable for the masses when it comes to personality. One may appreciate such behaviour, but it's not necessarily popular.

I also like Reimu more, but yknow, it's hard to argue about tastes. Sanae is definitely not a character that should be disliked.

Fandom interpretations have to be in mind as well, since many fans don't really interact with canon stories that much.

Which to me she makes it a very good contrast in comparison to the others lol.
It doesn't only show us something from a bit of different perspective but it also it may be relieving to some that may not always tolerate the others for being... too intense sometimes.

I also like Reimu more than Sanae, but still, I think she's absolutely different from her and that she haves some strengths that not everyone notices.
So yeah, like you, I also don't think she should be disliked.

That's what I meant with "if they actually informed themselves and tried to understand her or see think from other perspective".
Like to think in her past and implications or the canon stuff given.
Because if not is easy to just make assumptions of her persona that later ends with shitty stereotypes like "Sanae good girl UWU".
And that goes to any other character as well (it just that it seems that Sanae is one of the most affected by it, sadly).

Fair, but some like more escapism in their fantasy stories.

Fanon is probably the only thing keeping the touhou community as big as it is, so I wouldn't take too much of a jab at it.

I think Cirno is more affected by the stereotypes, than any other character. Poor fairy. Sanae is probably the most affected protagonist, that is definitely true.
Though, Sakuya is also very different in fanon.

I understand. And I don't think that fanon is so bad neither (there are tolerable things like kaguya gamer or good concepts like Sakuya lunarian) but comparing it to Canon, it feels that is mostly a bit more mediocre than good.
And well, as much that I love the fandom thanks to things like PC-98, KKHTA, GLS, Suikakasen or the FangameJam... in some aspects canon just feels better, and such, It's a shame that not everyone cares too much about reading (or at least investigating) the official media as how some we do.
I think Cirno is more affected by the stereotypes, than any other character.
Hm, perhaps. I think it maybe could be like that, considering how now Meiling, Flandre and Alice are receiving a bit of better treatment (which to me it were the most mistreated characters in the past).
But Cirno perception from the fandom doesn't seems to be changed too much. People still treats her too much Idiotic... but honestly? She IS kinda dumb, so it feels like a minor and easy mistake to exaggerate in comparison to the previous examples, so, only maybe.
Though, Sakuya is also very different in fanon.
Back then? For sure. She was a bully that was very strong, serious, cold and that couldn't be matched by anybody, truly intelligent also.

But at least, nowadays, that seems to start have changing, and people realizes more about her clumsy nature in canon and her lack of knowledge beyond of her responsibilities as a maid.
And i think that's amazing, because canon Sakuya is so endearing and cute lol.
You weirdly would find her as serious as how some exaggerate.
