What is your favorite Touhou character illustration made by ZUN?

I’ve noticed that what makes Touhou more noticeable than any other game is the way ZUN draw his character, I don’t think that Touhou would have the same atmosphere if the character were drawn in a classic manga style, I think it would be just a regular bullet-hell game (I guess it’s the way Touhou game genre is called).
 

🌟 Anyway, I would like to know what is your favorite Touhou character illustration (made by ZUN of course ^^) if you hesitate between one or another just post them both ☺️

It would be interesting if you can say what you like in the illustration you choose. No problem if you’re lazy to write it 😏

So, let’s start with me, I love Reimu illustration in Touhou Imperishable Night. She looks like a doll, I love her design and the color design is fantastic too. It makes me feel a sort of nostalgia… that’s why it’s my favorite illustration ^^

Interesting choice in IN Reimu. I feel like this version of Reimu gets me thinking of Hina, as in her ribbons curl a bit, but I think that is just me.

 For me, it's Eternity Larva from Hidden Star in Four Seasons. A butterfly fairy was a surprise for me when I first saw this, thinking it would be a bit odd. But then I grew to like it. 

The fluttering ring of leaves on her head feels like to me, the ringing of something fresh. Eternity is a fairy of summer, after all. She longs for that heat to catch up to all who seeks and enjoys it. Personally, I see her butterfly wings as an perfect execution of art here. It looks so realistic, and gives the impression that it's very big, and spreads out wider than her span. The hands maybe a synostic reminder to Rumia, but hey.

Her clothes design, for me looks natural. Yes, butterfly gradients follow the top, but then it splits down at the bottom of the dress with leaves and rock patterns (it seems, sorry if it isn't) caressing along the dress, making her feel like she belongs to the nature, and the flutters of life belong it.

All in all, its lovely, and probably stuck with me the most.

By the way I love your artstyle have you got tumblr or somewhere you post your artworks ? 🤔

 
Oh man, this is a really hard one..
As you probably might know, I am a certified Zun artstyle enjoyer, so this is a really hard question for me ^^; But anything from Touhou 1 to 9.5 is a go to answer for me.. With a few modern games sprinkled throughout.

To think about it, everything in Th13 Marisa design is different even her pose thanks for posting it cuz’ I’m always overlooking on Th13 artworks

My Touhou art gallery =  PC98 to Touhou 11 arts

This is so Shoujo looking and I guess it’s what makes the difference between Touhou PC98 to 10 era and Touhou modern era. ZUN kinda gave up this Shoujo style for a more generic and flat style, it’s style very cute but I don’t feel this Touhou vibe through his new arts. 🤨

I totally agree, this is a very powerful and charismatic looking art, it’s really sad that the other characters didn’t had a full screen art too.

For me the best thing with Sariel is her little animation during the fight, she looks calm but strong… I don’t know how to describe this feeling in a better way ^^

TH13 art is awesome, even though my favorite Marisa is the PC98 one xd

Just look, her hair is so cute with the moon and the colors match so well!

Also her hair, is beautiful in front of her eye and she looks a more wise character in this version, idk how to explain xd

Yess I agree so much lol
I miss the old Touhou style, especially from The Seihou - Touhou 9 era, it looked warm, fuzzy, nostalgic, handdrawn....
That Seihou Yuuka I posted looks so warm, even the green (which is usually grouped with the cold colors, like blue and purple), looks warm! It's great, I really wish he still had that style, even though the newer one is heaps better. :SaguDown:

It’s okay you can add any of your favorite design or artworks as long as it was made by ZUN :3

She really is amazing here what I prefer the most is to see Marisa wearing a different color outfit and her dress it’s just so cute !! I really love how ZUN designed Marisa’s hat in every games.

It’s really sad that during this period ZUN didn’t draw a lot like he did in that Seihou Yuuka artwork.

But I don’t really like the fact that in his new artworks, the faces are all the same and the design aren’t so Touhou-like

 
Every single olddish "th6-th7-th8" 

Idk, i like "Retro art" (Internet Art created in the 2000's or even older!), can be so saturated but have their charisma that made those drawings so cute and hilarious. 

PC-98 were also cool too, but don't see all of the art Zun did between 1999-2001... YIKES (if you know, you know...)
