Touhou Fan Games Thread

Sakuyafan22

Elegant Dungeon Crawling Artist
I wanted to start this thread to encourage discussions about Touhou fan games and bring to light obscure projects that might've flown under the radar for some.
To start things off, I want to talk about a Rogue style dungeon crawl game called Touhou Crawl.

Touhou Crawl is a reskin of a game called Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.
It's similar to Rogue and other dungeon crawl games like it. It emulates the archaic controls and old graphics art style, along with the absurd tendency for your run to end when you least expect it.
You can choose to play as a Touhou character or create your own by choosing it's race and profession.
Everything in Touhou Crawl is random when you start a new run, creating unique playthroughs.
The bosses of this game are also Touhou characters. They're powerful, so you might want to avoid them until you're strong enough to fight them.
The dungeon is littered with shrines dedicated to a few Touhou characters. They grant passive boons and abilities--for a price.

The game is free on Steam.

The next game I want to share is Flandre's Dream: 36,000 Foot Depth.
It's an old browser game that's basically a casual idle rpg.

You play as a dozen Touhou characters that are randomly generated into a team of four and fight enemies until you resurface or the party is wiped out.
However, there's no experience points or leveling up.
To get stronger you have to collect manna from enemies or by sending Koakuma to perform tasks.
The manna is then spent on upgrades that are randomly generated on game startup or reload.

Battles are quick and simple. The order of attack depends on the type of attack the characters have (sonic, quick, heavy and chase).
At the end of each stage is a boss that attacks the party while summoning reinforcements.

The story might be a little hard to grasp since its all written in semi-comprehensible English, but its a relatively simple one.

Its a fun game when you just want to chill out or are passing the time. You can find it on Steam.

Ohhh can anyone here recommend obscure touhou fan games? If so. i have plently of ones myself which i think are underrated!

Yes, anyone is free to share their recommendations. If there's something you want to share, feel free to do so.

The next game I'd like to share is Valkyrie of Phantasm.
It's a fighting game similar to the open free roaming Dragon Ball fighting games.
Two players pick their chosen character, customize their loadouts and buffs, and choose an arena before engaging in battle.
The game features a story mode, practice mode, single player matches, multiplayer and a newly released survival mode.
Although fully released, the devs have more things planned for the game, as well as bug fixes.

The game is available on Steam.

I downloaded touhou crawl a while back because I didn't know how to pirate, the ui was pretty confusing but this post convinced me to pick it up again xd

This post will cover the game Touhou Dystopian, a Rogue-like hack and slash game on Steam.

The player has a choice of four characters and engages on a run with each segment ending with a boss battle.
The game itself is short, beatable in only thirty minutes if you know the game front to back.
Completing arenas allows the player to choose talents that give the characters upgrades or buffs.
Said talents can be made stronger by selecting them repeatedly.

As you beat bosses, you collect terracotta statues that you can turn in for upgrades and game features.
The player also has a number of companion characters that can accompany them into the fight.
Each companion has their own set of abilities that can be upgraded.
Completing runs unlocks harder difficulties.

The game also has mod support.

This post will cover I Am Sakuya and I Am Sakuya: Lunarian Invasion.
For those who don't know, they're a pair of FPS games where the player plays as Sakuya wielding an array of firearms, her knives and the ability to stop time.

I Am Sakuya is a Doom clone made in Doom 2's engine with all the mechanics of the typical run and gun shooter.
The plot of the game is a two episode long story of how Sakuya came to be in Remilia's employ while fighting fairies, Suika clones, Rumia and Wiggle.
At the end of each segment is a boss battle against the denizens of the mansion.
There's also a DLC episode where the player assumes the role of Reimu.

Like all FPS games of it's kind, there's secrets to find and the game keeps track of the time taken to finish the level and the overall time.
Perfect for completionists and speed runners.
The game has mod support and a VR version.

Lunarian Invasion is the sequel to the prior game and...it's ok.
The game was made in the Unity engine and was bare bones on release.
I was one of the first to buy the game on release ($8 U.S) and it really needed more development time.
To the credit of the developers, they've realized their mistake have been making improvements over time.

Bugs are being fixed, levels are being touched up (level three was remade entirely. Holy cow, it was bad!), and more features are being added.
The game still isn't perfect or completely fixed, BUT it's a lot better than it was before.

The plot of the game is that after Yorihime beat the large posse of characters that invaded the moon, Sakuya went back guns blazing for revenge.
She still uses the same armaments as before, but you don't have them all at once.
Instead, you gain them gradually...which kind of sucks.

All in all, they're good games if you like old school FPS games.

This post will discuss Wonderful Waking World, a Touhou schmup fan game.
The gameplay has all the bells and whistles of a typical Touhou game. You play through the stages and fight the bosses at the end.
The bosses are mostly fan characters, but they're well designed and not typically what you might expect.
The stages might seem easy at first, but the difficulty ramps up fast despite the simple bullet patterns.

The playable characters are Reimu, Sanae and Marisa.
Overall, its a game that's easy to learn, but hard to master.

This post will cover Touhou Mystery Reel, an action platformer.

There's not much to say about this one. Development on this game stopped years ago and has only two playable levels.
However, I'd argue it's worth playing as a way to kill time, especially since the game is free.

The player plays as Cirno, who is trying to prove herself as the strongest while navigating maps that are littered with enemies.
Said enemies can be dispatched by attacking them, preferably via button combos.
While the maps are easy to clear, there are side paths that lead to mini games and side quests.
(Some of these alternate paths can only be accessed by issuing combos. Whether or not they're accessible is beyond me.)

Each map ends with a boss fight. And these fights are difficult; as in professional arcade fighting game levels of difficult.
If the player wins the fight flawlessly, they can unlock a pair of scrolls that grant additional abilities.

You can find the game on Steam.

This post will cover Touhou Gensokyo Survivors.

This fan game is a Vampire Survivors clone with a new coat of paint.
It plays like all games of it's kind: collect points to gain levels and gain items that grant new attacks against an unending horde of enemies.
However, instead of just gaining these items, you have to store them in an inventory grid that you gradually have to make room for.
The more space you have, the more attacks you can have on hand.
You can also spend points to gain minor buffs to your health, damage output and movement speed.

You start out with Reimu and Marisa as playable characters, but you can buy more characters as you play.
Each character has a set of stats and a starting weapon.

Overall, its a fun game that's simple and fun. Perfect to help unwind without the need to focus too much.

This post will cover Usatei 2025, developed by our very own Hieda no Akyuu.

The game is a flappy bird clone where the player controls Reisen as she passes through spikes.
The gameplay is simple, but challenging. The character and background art is soft, retro and colorful, reminiscent of older computer art.
I think the best part about the game for me personally is the fact the characters are fooling around in the background.
It helps make the game seem more alive and not feel like the player is staring at a static image.

You can find it in the download tab.

This post will cover In Miko We Trust, a visual novel.

In Miko We Trust is a short visual novel where the player assumes the role of the Vice President.
The player is given a few choices on which characters they want to interact with along with choices that occurs during the scenarios.
The story is well written (though this is the first visual novel I've ever played, so I'm hardly an expert on the subject), the character art has soft pastel colors that are treat to see and the backdrops are simple photos that perfectly establish the scene without going overboard.

The characters the player interacts with are Miko, Futo, Mamizou and Kokoro.
There are four endings overall, three good and one bad.
The game is perfect if you want to play a visual novel that you can finish in an hour.
