The Gensokyo Survival Guide, or the Life and Times of Oscar Diggs (updates weekly)

Meat

Meats in Gensokyo are highly prized. It makes for fine foodstuffs, and can be used to barter or bribe with more primitive-minded Youkai. That said, meat is difficult to come by. Unlike Earth where most meat is shipped from across the world to a store, in Gensokyo meat has to be acquired by hunting a wild animal or slaughtering an animal large enough to give meat. Due to this, meat is hard to come by in most seasons.

There are a number of ways of preserving meat. A cool cellar can be used to keep it at a reasonably cold temperature for some time. Salt can be used to dry the meat and seal it, or it can be sealed using animal fat or even cheese. Alternatively, you could pickle your meat using water and salt, or cure it using salt and spices. One can even bury it deep in the ground, where the cold earth can keep it safe. The simplest way to preserve it however is simply to smoke it, which will dry out the meat, repel insects and make it slower to rot.

If you consider providing meat to a Youkai, it is best to bear in mind the Youkai's temperament and tastes. While safe with most Youkai, some find certain meats or preservation methods disagreeable.

"We have to go back for him!"

Cirno looked an awful sight. The askew wig and dirtied kimono Wriggle calmly helped her with were bad enough. But already, her eyes were beginning to wet with nervous tears, and there was a manic look in her eye. Normally, the risk of Cirno crying would have melted Wriggle's heart. Especially after the night before. As it was, the look only gave Wriggle a small sense of satisfaction. She shook her head at Cirno's plea, even as she continued. "We just found Osu! We can't lose him again!"

"There there," Wriggle replied, with an uncharacteristic condescension as she patted Cirno's hand. "I am sure the 'great and powerful' Osu is safe in the Fortune Teller's house. He's probably teleported himself back to Heida Temple already. We had better hurry to see him again~"

The lilt in her voice was noticeable even to Cirno. Who gave her friend a penetrating look. One she wished could detect what had Wriggle acting so weird. But their friendship won in the end. With a heavy heart and fearful damp eyes, Cirno started towards the Temple. Wriggle didn't have long to savor her victory. As she pulled her wig on, she finally noticed over her shoulder the eyes of Agappa. Though her gaze wasn't quite on wriggle, but above her.

"What are you staring at, creepo?"

Her arm slowly raised. Before pointing, in a way that made Wriggle's body grow cold with fear that was not her own. And in that moment, she realized she hated Agappa. Even if she didn't know why.

"I see you."

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Wriggle’s face disappeared from the corner of the window. For a moment, Oscar felt his heart grow cold. She had been difficult, even by her standards. But Agappa, Cirno and Wriggle’s presence had been comforting. Now, for the third time in two days, he was all alone…

...Except for a lazy old hare taking a nap in his hat of course.

The low sound of the monster in the hall drew Oscar’s attention. The thing seemed afraid of coming back to the kitchens, where the ‘ghost’ of a headless man had terrified it so. But Oscar was sure the moment he left, it would see he was human. Even the terror it seemed to have of him as a spirit would be of no use while he was in the flesh.

...Unless…

Oscar’s eyes cast themselves over the room. Dried meat hung from the ceiling awaiting an owner who would never come. Fresher meat lay rancid and rotting. A dull green mass fit only for the maggots that squirmed inside of them. Taking a knife, he did his best to ignore the scent at his nostrils as he turned to one. Idly running the blade over the surface and forcing its inhabitants out. The sight that befell him was too disgusting for words, and so Oscar would never try in the years after. He had just decided to give up on this idea, when his eye shifted over the room. In the corner, he could see a broom made of some kind of straw. A mouse had nibbled at it at one point, but it looked mostly intact. In fact the star looked sturdy enough to resist him breaking it in half…

The thought made him pause. The gears turned quietly in his mind. Before a slow smile crossed his face. With a glance to make sure the monster was away, he quickly snatched up the broom, showing an energy that disturbed the old rabbit. It glared down at him as Oscar undid the bindings. Winding pieces of straw into a primitive rope. He gave the wound piece of five broom-hairs a tug. It held, if only just.

“Time for another monster to walk these halls.” He murmured with a knowing smile.

The Ao Bozu let out a low pitiful cry as it circled the central courtyard. So far, it had circled the courtyard a dozen times. He had examined several rooms. Some he could enter, some had far too many eyes watching for it. And of course there was the kitchen. Haunted as it was, by the headless man. The brute was glad to be free of its prison however. Even this limited freedom was a blessing.

A low moan echoed from down the hall. Fearfully, the beast turned its head. The door of the kitchen stood open. Ominous with only a faint illumination from the afternoon sun. For the span of three breaths, the space was empty. Until a figure appeared. It was dressed well, its hands extended, coated in exposed meat as it approached blindly. Its face, wrapped in rotting flesh, oozed faintly. Flies clinging to it as it stumbled into the hall with a dull groan.

The Ao Bozu felt another set of its eyes close in fear. The monster scrambling for cover as the dead thing lumbered into the hall. And towards the stairs to the lower cellar…

As Oscar pulled the impromptu mask of straw and meat from his face, he could see the yawning maw of the cellar ahead of him. The space was pitch black, and nearly impenetrable. But if Wriggle was right, it also had his freedom…

What now?

Preserving Fruits and Vegetables

We have touched on preserving meat, but fruits and vegetables are even more important. Fish and wildlife can be found with some effort in wintertime, but you are unlikely to find any greens out of season. And with modern methods such as conventional refrigeration or dehydration unavailable, you will have to fall back on old traditions. Fortunately, we have a few available.

Canning is the best option for long-term fruit preservation. Though one has to be careful when doing so. Canning when done properly is unlikely to spoil, but spoilage is hard to detect. Fruits with low acidity, or vegetables, should be canned under high pressure, while fruit with high acidity should be placed in a water bath.

Jam or preservatives are an option as well. By boiling fruit with sugar, it can safely be canned and stored in a cool, dark place or even buried.

Using a brine solution, such as vinegar or salt water, you are able to pickle vegetables or fruit. While unpleasant, this is one of the safer methods.

For shorter preservation, one can light a low fire in an oven. Placing fruit or vegetables inside, you will be able to safely remove the moisture inside.

Or, you can skip these silly options and subscribe to our Blue Ice Fairy program! With fresh ice prepared at our Ice-Fairyctory or harvested from the Misty Lake in winter, we produce a twenty pound block of ice which can be placed in a cool, dark space. Allowing you to preserve your precious foodstuffs without concern for spoilage! And with only a 30% chance of Cirno getting bored and wandering off, isn't that a deal worth making? Subscribe for 1 Bu a month, for Blue Ice Fairy. Delivered fresh, right to your home!

Otherworldly Ventures and its affiliates are not responsible for ice shipment delays due to Cirno's boredom, or Incidents occurring in Gensokyo. Ice blocks may at times contain complimentary frozen frogs. Blue Ice Fairy ice blocks are intended for refrigeration, and are not meant to be used to build a shelter or thrown at Otherworldly Venture employees.

Wriggle stared at the strange little Youkai. A voice in the back of her mind acknowledged thinking of Agappa Haraume as 'Little' was rich, but the thought buried itself quickly. This creepy little turd had made her life miserable, and dragged that human in between Cirno and her. Everything was all wrong. From her thoughts to her friends. It had to be her fault.

The youkai realized her lip was curled. Agappa just stared at her. An uncharacteristic intensity in her furrowed brow and accusing finger. Not that it was pointed at Wriggle. Her mind seized on it. Already, her mouth shifted. A half-formed insult on her lips, something between calling her stupid or blind. But instead a low growl came from her, before her lips moved in a low voice. "Now listen here Yama's pet. And listen good. Cirno is mine, and so are her friends. Yours? He isn't coming back. Keep out of my way, and we won't have any problems. But if you have a bone to pick with me...Well. Eiki won't miss you."

Wriggle took a deep breath as she turned. Leading a confused Cirno back towards Heida. Wriggle wasn't sure why she didn't quite feel herself today. Perhaps it was too long around that 'magician'. Spending some time alone with her friends would surely change that.

If only Agappa would stop staring at her while she walked away.

The yawning cellar seemed to stretch on before him. The stagnant air filling Oscar's nostrils with mildew. In that moment, he wished he could pull out his phone again. But his stunt with the projector had already drained what power it had left, and the monster's roars told him he didn't have long. With a slow breath, he stepped down the worn and rotted stairs. Comforted by the fact that he was surely safe here...

It was on his eighth step, that the wood under his foot shattered. Sending him pitching forward. His mouth opened to cry for help, but he only just remembered the danger overhead. And so, he struck the hard dirt floor without a sound.

The dark clung to Oscar. For the want of light, he could not know if he had been out for seconds or hours. The only thing which told him he was conscious now, was the feeling of Houdini nuzzling at his face. For a moment, Oscar could just lie there. Before a hand rose to scratch at the rabbit's head. The rabbit might have been a lazy old coot. Better suited to sleeping and being pulled from hats than adventures. But with the others gone, Oscar was glad to have him.

A few moments passed. His hands patting at the rough earthen ground. He found his hat after a few tries, before slipping Houdini back inside. Returning the hat to his head. After a few moments, he found a few other things. His trick flower, a few kerchiefs and...Oscar almost felt a smile as he picked up his trick rope. Quickly clicking pieces of it back into place. It couldn't let him climb down it to safety, but it could help him here. Holding a length of the now straight rope in hand, Oscar held it in front of him. Idly tapping as he explored the room. Now and then, he would feel things brushing at his face. Dried herbs, forgotten pieces of meat, vegetables caught between rotted and preserved. Now and then he would find a spider's web instead, which would cling to his face before he could remove it. The tapping rope couldn't tell him what it found when it hit something. But he could guess well enough from context clues. Solid, wooden sounding, flat. A crate. The same but round was a barrel. The same but strangely shaped, a piece of furniture. It didn't take him long to find one of the walls. Tapping idly along the dirt wall, he made his way slowly around. First along the east wall. Then the north, almost stumbling over a large *thing* in the northeast corner. Then the west and...

He paused as the stairs appeared ahead. No. Nonono, this couldn't be right. Wriggle said there was an exit down here. He had circled the room, and there hadn't been an exit...

What did that mean?

What now?

⬇️ = This seems like an ideal time to panic.

:SekiThink:  = Do another lap. Maybe its on the ground, or higher up on the walls.

:KoishiXD:  = Hey dude, its alright. Houdini, sleepy as he is, has your back. Maybe share your thoughts with him.

:TenshiCry:  = Since the situation can't get worse, time to get out the grimoire. Stand by the stairs and read random passages until something useful happens.

🏆 = Welp, time to run back how we came.

Earth Rabbits

Known as ‘Earth Rabbits’ in English to differentiate them from Moon Rabbits, Earth Rabbits are normal rabbits who have ascended to a form of Youkai. Like other animal Youkai, they are said to be normal animals who have lived for an unusually long period of time. Through this, they gain immortality, sentience and magical powers.

Earth Rabbits are disobedient things, seldom taking the orders of others seriously, and are prone to pranks. They are however benevolent towards people who show them kindness, often helping in unexpected ways. They have strong bonds to other Earth Rabbits, often singing and dancing together, or preparing the traditional rabbit dish of Mochi. They are most often found in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, to the west of the Human Village, at the terminus of the Youkai Trail.

His breaths were ragged and frightened. The pole’s end thumped against the ground as he desperately felt for the promised entrance. This couldn’t be right...Wriggle wouldn’t do this. She could be testy at times, but why would she lie? And in front of an upset Cirno of all people? With frantic energy, the bamboo pole continued its search. Tapping at the ground rapidly. Each reaffirming a silent secret which gripped at Oscar’s heart…

There was nothing there.

The taps grew slower. Going from whacks against the sod and dirt to gentle prods. Until it fell from his hand. Slowly, Oscar leaned back. Taking a seat at the base of the stairs. Overhead, the Youkai thudded about. The sound of its footsteps echoing even down here. For a moment, Oscar wondered if anyone would miss him if he never returned. He was already certain he wouldn’t be missed back on Earth. Would Cirno come looking for him? Or would Wriggle change her mind? Would Agappa come for him? Or in a few weeks’ time, would a witch ask if anyone had seen that guy she met a month ago in front of Heida Temple?

The thought was sobering. With little else to do, he pulled the top hat from his head. Easing it upside-down. Its inhabitant did not stir, lost in a deep sleep. Nose wriggling as he had some secret dream. Even here, the sight made Oscar smile.

“Well Houdini. It looks like this is the end. We had a good run, made a lot of children happy. Its just a shame our story ends without that perfect performance I wanted as a kid.” His hand gently rubbed at the old rabbit’s head. Houdini’s eyes opened in a sleepy glare, which quickly shifted into a look of somnolent joy as Oscar rubbed at his head. Chin easing back for a better rub. “Come to think of it, you’re as old as I was when we met. You’re the only one who ever stuck around when times got bad. I know its because I fed you and all. But you were always there during a performance or whenever I was alone. That still makes you my truest friend. My only friend now.”

The creature’s eyes seemed to open wider. His nose wiggled curiously, almost as if staring. Oscar couldn’t stop a chuckle.

“Guess this place is my tomb now. I just wish it didn’t have to be both of ours.”

The rabbit gazed up at him for a moment, before with more energy he thought possible in the lazy critter, it scrambled from his hat. Long back legs kicking as it lunged from its bed. It hit the ground, even as Oscar stood to try and grab him. But Houdini was already off, running faster than Oscar recalled him in years. The moment the furry creature reached a wall, he began to frantically dig into the wold. A fine mist of dirt spraying after him. By the time Oscar reached the hole, it had already vanished into an old rat tunnel which wound along the wall.

Again he was alone.

Out in the grass of the Fortune Teller’s property, a white paw cut through the dirt. A face white as snow, coated by brown, emerged. Tired as he was, the rabbit hopped free. Scurrying along the quiet road. It was well into the afternoon now. The fields wouldn’t empty for hours yet, and the townsfolk were at rest and preparing evening meals. There was no one to observe him as he hopped along the cobblestone road. Before he headed deeper into the town…

The Grassroots Youkai Network

An informer affiliation of lesser Youkai, the Grassroots Youkai Network is often used to pass on information between weaker Youkai. Usually as a means of protecting themselves, whether against Humans, stronger civilized Youkai, Wild Youkai, Spirits or other threats. Many of these Youkai act as informal advisors to Otherworldly Ventures, confirming details in this book and assisting in tracking down rumors. Its members are usually anonymous, leading the Otherworldly Ventures team to assume the Network is widespread throughout Gensokyo.

Guessss Whhhooooo? Back again for more of your money! If you had any. I’ll take your jewelry. Don’t give me that look, you’re a Kami. You’ll make it back in donations in a few months...or decades, depending. Now to flip this ring. Heads, Houdini goes to the Stalls. Tails, the Buddhist Temple my loser sister stays at.

...Wellwell, I guess he goes to the stalls. But if you thought meeting the local bunny girls would be that easy, you’re going to be very disappointed.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The rabbit made its way down the cobblestone road with long hops of his back legs. Though as he bounced frantically towards the line of stalls, he could feel his strength leaving his legs. His bones, old for rabbits, ached painfully. Each hop brought him closer to his friend’s rescue, but also towards his own exhaustion.

He could see them ahead. The figures were dressed in peasant clothing, one taller, the other shorter. But even his old nose could smell they were rabbits. The two sat around a table, eating. The taller gagging, even as her companion pointed and laughed…

...Why were they so hard to see…

The periphery of his vision grew dark. His throat struggling to take in a breath. The two stood, grasping their great bamboo packs before turning to leave…

No!

The sight brought new strength to his limbs and he bounded forward. But his body failed him. Even as he struggled to catch his breath, he fell forward onto the road. Darkness consumed his vision, and he slipped into a despairing sleep…

A pair of red shoes crossed the cobblestone pathway. Their owner gazing off towards the horizon. Dour thoughts clouding an otherwise youthful mind. Even if the basket hanging from the crook of her arm promised some cheer. Her eyes slowly passed the homes that lined the space. Idly wondering if life would be better if she moved out from the Village. It was not easy living in hiding all the time after all. But experience had taught her that life was just as dull anywhere else. Perhaps moreso, as the Human Village was a magnet for Incidents. And it would be lonely without her friends around.

Her eyes turned towards the Heida Temple as she passed the road, a voice in the back of her head wondering if Keine would try to rope her into going back to night school. Before she stopped in mind stride.

In the center of the road lay an elderly rabbit. Breathing heavily with his eyes closed. The day was still early, so no humans had seen him, but he was sure to be a lucky hawk or dog’s lunch…

With a soft sigh, she turned. Changing her path to walk towards the wheezing creature. Stopping in front of it to set her basket down. The cloth over the top rustling as a pair of red eyes peered out at him. Crouching down, she studied it for a moment. As though rethinking what she was even doing.

“Hey.”

There was no reply. Only more ragged breathing.

“Hey. Wake up.”

Her words didn’t seem to be helping much. But at least he opened his eyes to that. A hand reached into her basket. Ignoring the feeling of hair and the odd nip of teeth against her arm.

“Ugh, you’re in a rough state...I’m not much of a pet person. So sorry if you don’t like it or whatever.”

Her slender hand emerged. Offering an Onigiri to the exhausted rabbit. For a moment, it could only sniff at it, before slowly nibbling at the offering.

“Wonder what you are doing here...this is the worst place a rabbit could be. Did you come here with the rabbits from Eientei?”

Only the sound of munching met her ears.

“Not much of a talker, are you? I think we’ll get along.”

Gripping the exhausted rabbit by the scruff of the neck, the young lady awkwardly lifted the fluffy creature. Dropping it into the basket. Its food soon following. “You just get some sleep. We can sort out introductions later.”

The basket began to sway again, drifting from side to side as Houdini caught his breath. The basket itself was half stuffed with Onigiri. Cooked rice, plums, fish and other fine foods mixing in the space. But he could pay no mind to that. Nor to the one he had already been chewing on. For across from him, was a human head watching him.

“Hey.”

Oscar would probably have startled at that. Houdini however, was too relaxed at his age for that. He was just grateful he had dinner and a ride. A pleasant enough thought, as he returned to sleep.

Rokurokubi

'Pulley Neck'

One of the more common Youkai to emerge from humans, Rokurokubi are universally drawn from human women, usually those from red light districts. They are said to be transformed due to some cosmic misdeed, though the nature of this misdeed can range from blasphemy against the Kami to simple infidelity. This misdeed need not be performed by the victim of it either. Often Rokurokubis inherit this punishment from their husbands or fathers, who go unpunished for their actions.

Possessing unnaturally long and extendable necks, Rokurokubi conceal their abilities by day. By night, their use their elongated necks move their heads around as their bodies sleep. Their snake-like neck they usually use to drink oil from hanging lanterns. Though they may also hunt small animals, frighten unfortunate victims, or restrain people. Though frightening, Rokurokubi are seldom harmful to humans. Often preferring to live among humans, and usually unaware of their condition.

There are a series of similar beings widely fitting in the same class. While the youkai Nukekubi and devil Dullahan are similar in some respects, it is best not to confuse them. Dullahans and Nukekubi are both significantly more dangerous than a Rokurokubi, and seldom take kindly to being compared to the more benign Rokurokubi.

It burned her hand. Searing against her fingers even as they ran against the texture. Scars, black as midnight, forming over her fingertips. A little hiss escaped between clenched teeth as the fabric ran against her small digits. Until all sensation in her hand ceased. And she had no choice but to let go.

She raised her hands. Ignoring the sound of the stream passing beneath her as she held up her dull hands. Scars, black as pitch, greeted her gaze, covering each of her hands. But despite the memory of the pain, Rumia only felt sad she could not feel it against her fingers again. Close her eyes, and think of how things used to be…

The hands lowered. The odd sound of birdsong surrounding her as she sat in the shadow of a boulder. A familiar shield against the sun...It may have burned her much as the ribbon did. But the sun’s light only brought pain. The ribbon’s touch, the fabric, it brought back...happier, memories. If only they had stayed forgotten…Humans had been easy enough to ignore. Even with her abiding hunger, there were plenty of other tasty things to eat, when the gnawing got too bad. Sometimes, she could almost convince herself there were no humans in Gensokyo. That she had no idea what they tasted like. That she had never been friends with one. Until...

Her eyes turned down to the creek that ran over her bare feet, forming a pool. A miserable face gazed back at her, its cheeks stained with dried tears. But she could see something in its eyes. The same feeling that gnawed at her gut. Hunger…and something else.

Kimiko was right.

Her fingers could scarcely move properly. She had no idea it was a stone in her grip until she had thrown it into the water with all her might. The furious splash startled fish and bird alike as she huddled against her knees. Purposefully avoiding the water’s surface now.

“Miko...would my friends hate me, if they knew what I did?”

The murmur of the creek was her only reply.

“I’m sorry…”

The basket jostled. Rousing the sleeping rabbit from his dream with bleary winks. Light stole around the woven basketting, illuminating the head opposite to him, sleeping as well. He could hear voices outside, and with his strength returning, he nuzzled at the edge of the basket.

His rescuer was standing in the shadow of an imposing looking building. A Buddhist temple, he was sure. The redheaded girl peering around tombstones, until she closed her eyes and let out a breath.

“You can come out Kogasa. You know you won’t get any Faith from scaring me anyway.”

The rabbit’s worn eyes stared up, unable to perceive more than colors as a woman holding an umbrella stepped towards them, her face looking downcast as she approached.

“Oh, its just you Sekibanki...I was hoping to scare someone today…”

“Yeah, well. That’s life. C’mon. I bet Kagerou and Wakasagihime are waiting for us at the usual place.”

The blur of blue and soft white slowly resolved itself as the figure approached, It was a young woman, dressed in a modest but distinctive blue dress. Holding a large umbrella, a comedically long tongue swirling behind it as she approached as though hiding itself from view. Hetero-chromatic eyes of blue and red giving Sekibanki a disappointed look, which she either ignored or failed to notice.

The expression on her face vanished as she turned her eyes down to the basket. Only now noticing the fluffy white face which sat on the brim of the basket.

“Who’s that?”

“Huh? Oh, this is a new friend I made. I found him passed out in the square in front of the Heida Temple. If I hadn’t passed by, a dog or hawk probably would have gotten him. Doesn’t talk much, but he’s pleasant to be around.”

“Hmm…”

The blue-haired youkai considered him for a moment. Before with a sudden burst of energy, she rushed towards him. Mouth opening wide as her tongue rolled out, hands grasping towards him. “BLEEEGH! You look delicious!”

Houdini’s only response was a wiggle of his nose.

For a moment, Kogasa held the face, as though hoping the rabbit might change his mind and back away in terror. When he did not, she slumped forward. “Not even a little fear...I can’t even scare a rabbit.”

“Yeah...that’s life.”

Sekibanki didn’t feel her response was helpful. Especially after repeating it twice. But there wasn’t anything else she could think to say in that moment. The words hung in the air for a moment. Before she turned and stepped from the cemetery. The footfalls of the other hurrying to catch up.

“I’ll tell you what Kogasa. When we get to the Lake, I’ll let you have first pick of the food.”

“You know human food can’t sustain me though Seki-chan…”

“Yep.”

“...What did you pack this time?”

“You’ll have to wait until we get there.”

“Is anyone else going to be there?”

“Just Ichi. She’s in the basket.”

The talk of the two made the blood of the old hare stir, bringing him from a preemptive drowsiness. The lake? So far from the village! Oscar could be dead by the time he got back! Looking over the basket though, he could only see the food, packed in its fresh bamboo leaves, and the sleeping second head of the woman holding the basket…

There was no time to lose. He had to save his best friend.

Outside the basket, the two continued their conversation, rising along a path towards the northern gate.

“So what have you been doing lately, Koggers?”

“Why do you call me that?”

“Its funny.”

“Well, if you must know, I tried babysitting some of the children who go to the Myouren Temple.”

“How did that go?”

“Awful...They wouldn’t listen to me, they pulled at my umbrella, and then when I tried to scare them, they started calling me ‘umbrella ghoul’ and throwing water on me! So rude…”

“I mean...you live in a graveyard. Kids are going to find that weird.”

“Yeah but you would think I—”

Their conversation was cut short, as the basket rocked in Sekibanki’s arm, before the head of Ichika rocketed out of the wicker basket like a cannonball. The sleepy rabbit following after. His body made youthful in his adrenaline, his paws landed on the head as it bounced down the slope. Half running, half-rolling underneath it as it went down the stone street.

“I-Ichibanki!” Seki shouted after the head. Kogasa could only stare in stunned silence. Some voice in the back of her head wishing she could roll her head through the Village...maybe then the townsfolk would fear her.

"S-someone should help her!" Kogasa managed.

“Stop staring then, umbrella ghoul—let’s go!”

The reply Kogasa had half-formed broke into a shout as Sekibanki pulled after her, the two youkai chasing after the rabbit and the head as they rolled into town…

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

How will the two Youkai try to catch Ichika and Houdini?

:SekiThink:  = Sekibanki will extend her neck to try and grab Ichibanki.

:KoishiXD:  = Kogasa will shout for the townsfolk to help.

:TenshiCry:  = Use Kogasa's control over the weather to slow him with a strong wind.

:YoumuStare:  = Sekibanki fires a concentrated danmaku into the ground ahead to make a hole for Ichibanki to land in.

Karakasa Obake

‘Umbrella Ghost’

As discussed elsewhere in the Gensokyo Survival Guide, a number of Youkai are said to manifest over time, typically 100 years. Among the most prestigious of these is the Karakasa Obake, or ‘Karakasa Kozo’ meaning Paper Umbrella Priest Boy’.

This surprising looking creature resembles a standing Japanese umbrella. These traditional umbrellas are made of paper with a layer of oil over them to make them resistant to the rain. A Karakasa Obake resembles this with a single large eye, a long tongue and one or two legs emerging from the hem of the umbrella.

Karakasa Obake are benign creatures, often surprising humans by following them stealthily, before licking their victim with an oily tongue. Though not dangerous, this may still be traumatic in the right circumstances. Karakasa Obake usually have a lasting affection for humans, and are difficult to spur to violence.

Oddly, while most Youkai arise from eyewitness reports and have essays documenting them, Karakasa Obake have no reported sightings in Japan. This may be due to the Karakasa Obake's talent at being unobserved, or simply because they are so harmless no one considers them notable.

That said, umbrella themed Youkai are not uncommon, and one should take care not to confuse the playful Karakasa Obake with their more dangerous cousins.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The tumbling head rolled along the cobblestone path. The old rabbit somehow maintaining his perch on top of it over his wheezing. The two girls hurled after the two. Though Sekibanki could not help but think resentfully that Kogasa might have an easier time keeping up if she closed her umbrella…

She felt her head begin to come loose, one hand rising to push it back into place. It was surreal. A couple hours later, she and Kogasa would have dozens of witnesses to their inhuman nature. Farmers coming home, housewives working on food at the windows, children playing in the street. Now, the roads were mostly empty. Mostly. A housewife could be seen with a friend. Chatting with one another through a window. Normally, Sekibanki would have just walked right by, completely below note. But with Ichibanki bouncing ahead of her, there was not exactly an opportunity for subtlety…

“Koggers, I am about to do something stupid.”

“I told you not to call me—”

Kogasa’s irritated reply was cut off. Replaced with an expression of shock as Sekibanki threw aside her picnic basket. She held up her hand, holding aloft one of her spell cards. Danmaku surged from around her hand, flaring into the air overhead. The tired rabbit watched them rising impassively over his scurrying paws. They rained down onto the stone. Rupturing into the ground and throwing up shards of rock. Each creating a pothole large enough to catch her beloved extra head. Yet as she and her friends approached and the dust cleared, all she could see were empty potholes…

...And Ichibanki, laying bruised on her ear. The tired old rabbit sitting on top of her. A tongue lapping at his paw.

“What the hell man? I thought we were cool.” Sekibanki hissed as she started forward again.

No sooner had she started for him, than the rabbit’s mad dash resumed. Faster than she had ever guessed he could have moved, he bolted again, rolling Ichibanki beneath him. Each rotation of her head followed by an ‘Ow. Ow. Ow.’

The two Youkai followed, ignoring the two women staring at them from behind as they pursued the hare. Kogasa’s eyes rose, taking in her surroundings.

“Seki, I think…”

She stopped as the other Youkai ran around the corner. Her slender fingers clung to her umbrella, her extension of herself. An odd feeling of foreboding filling her. Before she reluctantly followed.

“You damn creep! Give me back my head!”

As she rounded the corner, she could see Sekibanki racing up the path of the Fortune Teller’s house. Its shape looming ahead as though to blight an otherwise lovely spring day. The disembodied head lay on its side on the doorstep, a flash of white passing as the rabbit bolted through a hole in the wall, beneath an Ofuda. His legs briefly kicking to either side before he passed through. Sekibanki bent down, picking up Ichibanki and tenderly brushing at the head’s face, bruised as it was. Kogasa walked beside her. Her demeanor suddenly subdued.

“So...we have Ichibanki. We can go on that picnic now and try to enjoy our day together.”

Sekibanki gazed down at the mirror of her own face. Its cheeks and face dirtied and made puffy from bruising. Still, Ichibanki tried to smile up at her.

“Nah. I’m going after that rabbit.”

“...Sekibanki, you can’t. That house is forbidden! And…”

The word ‘cursed’ somehow stuck to the roof of Kogasa’s mouth as she watched her friend. Still, Sekibanki only gave a shrug as she eased the other head into her shirt to keep it safe. “Don’t care. I thought he was a chill guy. Now I’m going to give him a piece of my mind.”

“But—”

“You can wait here Koggers. I don’t want you to see me shouting at an old fogey anyway.”

Kogasa watched her friend for a moment, hoping she might back down. But Sekibanki started for the house. Before with a small sigh, Kogasa followed.

Who knows. Maybe she could find someone to scare here…

The house is encircled with Ofuda, protective charms against Youkai and other spirits. How will the two get inside?

:SekiThink: = Ease Ichibanki through a broken window and have her open the door.

:KoishiXD: = Maybe a passing human could open the door for us? After all, the Hakurei Shrine is supposed to check on it...sometimes...

:TenshiCry: = Kogasa counters the Hakurei Shrine Ofuda with Ofuda from the Moriya Shrine.

🏆 = Dude, you can fly. Just go up through the balcony.

Ofuda

Referred to also as Gofu, these talismans are key tools in spiritual extermination and containment in the traditions of Shinto and Buddhism. Most often appearing as slips of paper, though also appearing as wooden or metal plates or cloth strips, Ofuda are imbued with the protective power of a Kami or Buddha depending upon their tradition.

These talismans often are used for specific purposes, usually protection against misfortune, natural disasters or evil forces. They can also be used for personal safety, wealth, good fortune and even finding love. When seen in Gensokyo, they are usually used to repel Youkai and Ghosts.

Ofuda are often sold at shrines, marked with the seal and name of the shrine or its Kami. It is seen as containing a piece of the Kami’s power, as well as a way to contact the kami. While similar to amulets or reliquaries sold or kept in Shrines, Ofuda are distinct from either. They may be purchased at the Hakurei Shrine, the Moriya Shrine, Heida Temple or the Myouren Temple.

“Let’s go.”

Slowly Sekibanki started upwards. Her feet dangling as her cape flowed after her. Kogasa’s eyes widened at the sight. Swinging her umbrella between the two and the street, even as her small hand grasped at the fabric overhead.

“S-Seki! What are you doing?”

“Flying to that open balcony, what does it look like?”

“Don’t fly around like that! You’ll get the Grassroots noticed by the humans! What if Reimu finds out we were poking around a sealed curse?”

The look on Sekibanki’s face looked unconvinced. But she hovered downwards. Thankfully, no one seemed to have noticed in the meantime. “Alright brainiac-Kogasa. The mansion’s marked with Ofuda. Ofuda designed to repel Youkai, using the Hakurei seal. How do we get past them?”

“...Ummm…” Nervousness drifted anew across Kogasa’s face. Slender fingers rolling the pole of her umbrella in between her fingers. “We...we could try pulling them off one at a—”

“They burn you know.”

“...Yeah…” Kogasa conceded with a wince. Remembering the touch of those simple slips of paper in battle with Reimu. Her eyes remained down. Before they rose with a fresh smile. “O-oh, we can have a human take them off.”

“...A human.”

“Yes!”

“You think a random human will come along and agree to pull off protective Ofuda for two strangers who can’t do it themselves?”

“We can try.”

“We could fly up as well.”

“And get caught by Reimu. Who will throw more Ofuda at us.”

“...Point taken.”

Defeated, all Sekibanki could do was lean back against the wall—before starting as though she had touch an electric fence. As she did, Kogasa hurried down towards the street, hoping for someone who could help them...

Thinking: A strange figure in a Western dress passes, her eyes cast upon a notebook in hand.

Koishi: A passing fisherman on his way back to the Misty Lake. An old man like him could be cajoled into helping the youth...

Sad: Nobles are uncommon, and one who wears a sword even rarer. Surely he would help if he were told someone was in danger.

Stare: An Outsider would have less knowledge of Ofuda and Youkai. Maybe a passing Outsider can help.

Work-Life Balance

In the Outside World, you are probably used to the rule of 8s. 8 hours to work, 8 hours to sleep, 8 hours to do with as you please. You're probably used to having the weekends off too.

As much as it hurts to say, these Western traditions are products of modernity. Gensokyo, being largely pre-industrial, is more used to a system of agrarian labor. Farmers, fishermen and other laborers are expected to work from dawn until dusk six days a week. A single day off in the Outside World is to be expected. Here, it can be the difference between a good harvest and starvation. A single animal wandering onto your farm can ruin your crops, or a day without fishing means a hungry belly.
That said, most work is concentrated around the harvest, with periods of relative inactivity in the winter, and parts of the fall. Gensokyo throws numerous festivals which act as holidays, and the various religious groups also have their own holy days they celebrate with relaxation and a communal meal. While this life can be hard to adjust to, you will come to find it rewarding in time..

By the time Sekibanki reached the street, Kogasa had already been standing there for some time. Gazing with nervous excitement around for someone, anyone, who could help them out. A simple glance was all Sekibanki needed to know this was a waste of time. The streets were almost completely empty. All the men and women in the village were working. Out in the farmland around the village, fishing along the canal or the lake, tending stalls and shops. The only people still in town were the elderly, children, or housewives. All of whom would be inside their homes.

"This is a complete waste of time, Kogasa."

"Hmm?" The heterochromatic eyes of her friend flitted to her. Faint confusion on her face. "I thought you wanted to fight that rabbit friend of yours?"

"Yeah, by flying inside. You're the one making a sideshow attraction of it."

"Don't be silly. We just--Oh! Hello there! Do you think you could--"

The figure Kogasa had stopped was a young man carrying two buckets of water. For a moment, he seemed to consider them, as if wondering if they were peddlers. One glance at the building behind them however, and he quickly sped away. Kogasa let out a little sigh. "Why do humans have to be like this?"

Sekibanki thought about giving either a serious, or a teasing answer. But thought better of it. Instead pulling Ichibanki from her basket to tenderly brush her face and comb her hair.

"Sometimes you just have to be patient Koggers."

"That's not my name."

"I know."

"Well maybe if you'd help me, we could--Oh! Miss! Miss hello!"

In an instant, Kogasa's impatience faded away. She was back to the cheerful figure Sekibanki knew. But as Sekibanki looked up to see the figure Kogasa was running towards, she felt her blood turn to ice.

That human was...different. Not just in her appearance. Westerners weren't that uncommon among the Outsiders. Even those with olive skin or blue eyes. The black robes she wore, simple and unobtrusive, were as alien as could be to the graceful, ornate kimonos of the Human Village. No, it was the way she moved. Even with her eyes closed and hands held before her, the step of her feet was like that of a predator patrolling its hunting grounds. Even with the stranger's eyes closed, Sekibanki felt as if she knew exactly where the two of them were.

This aura of quiet menace was completely missed by Kogasa.

"Miss! Miss can you help us? We're in need!"

The figure stopped, but did not open its eyes. Her fair lips moved, shifting silently as her hands remained clasped. Before she slowly turned. The black and white cloth she wore obscured almost all of her features, except for her face. Even with a polite smile, it seemed as cold and icy as any winter's day Sekibanki had seen. "Yes, my little profane one? How may this servant of Cristo help you?"

At her words, Kogasa only smiled awkwardly. Sekibanki eased Ichibanki back into the basket at her side with a slow swallow.

"That's...a weird way to greet someone. I'm Kogasa, this is Sekibanki. We're trying to get into the building there, but...we need a little help."

As Kogasa spoke, the stranger's blue eyes rose to Sekibanki. She felt herself take an involuntary step back. She knew. Somehow this stranger knew she and Kogasa were Youkai. Was she a Shrine Maiden? What Shrine in Gensokyo or the Outside World dressed so strangely?

Without a word, the woman slowly ascended the steps. Kogasa gazing after her happily. Giving a couple little hops of joy. Sekibanki wished she could share her friend's excitement.
Reaching the door, the stranger examined it for a moment. Before a slender hand emerged from the folds of her habit. Her fingers tenderly took one of the Ofuda in her hand. She studied it a moment before throwing it to one side. Her hand disappeared back in the folds of her robe as she turned. "That should do. Be well, little demons."

"Ah, thanks, but we're not demons. We're Yo--"

There were few moments in her life Sekibanki wished her hand could move faster. Even at a dead bolt, she only just got her palm over Kogasa's mouth before she silenced her. That cold smile remained on the woman's face. "As I said. Little demons. Though in return for this service, I must ask. If you meet a woman named Nata--vaca de Satanas--please tell the priest of the All Souls' Chapel in the Outsider Quarter."

The figure turned, resuming her peculiar walk. Sekibanki breathed a sigh of relief she was finally leaving. A little too soon. Kogasa had just enough time to slip free. "Wait! What's your name?"

Again, Sekibanki felt her blood run cold. The figure stopped. Her eye turning to Kogasa. As though considering whether it was better to answer her, or strike her down. She fortunately chose the first option. "Sister Francisca Cabral. Do tell me if you hear of Otomo Nata."

Sekibanki released a breath she didn't know she had been holding. Eyes opening to watch with relief as Sister Francisca stalked away. Kogasa turned to her bemused. "That was weird. But at least we can get in now! C'mon!"

The door stuck at first. But it seemed the stranger was right. With the Ofuda on the door removed, the two could safely force open the door. The smell of molding tatami mats and peeling paper greeted their nostrils. Kogasa clung to her umbrella as she looked around.

"Do you think he's nearby?"

"Probably." Sekibanki said, pulling Ichibanki from her basket to tie a napkin around Ichi's nose to cover the smell. "You remember our chase? He always stopped when he was starting to lose us. Definitely close. We'll have to be careful though."

"Huh?"

"This place has been confined for years, Koggers. There's probably some Youkai who were born here. They've probably gone feral, so we should stick together."

"Right. So where--"

The umbrella youkai's words were cut off by a roar which seemed to shake the entire building. Loud thundering footfalls shook the floor as a horrific thing emerged from a side room. Its face (or more accurately faces) a deep blue. One had the face of a child, one the face of an old man, and one the face of a wrestler. The two eyes of the old man and the three of the wrestler were now closed. With a set of three legs it scurried towards them on hands and knees. as it billowed at them.

"Good children don't wander too late!"

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

From one weirdo to another.
Thinking: Time for Danmaku! And fast!

Koishi: Wild youkai can sometimes be reasoned with. Perhaps some food will calm it?

Sad: If its a Youkai, Ofuda can hurt it. Sure it'll burn to pick it up, but maybe the Ofuda Francisca threw away can stop it?

Stare: Split up, we'll cover more ground that way.

Onigiri

A traditional Japanese meal consisting of round or triangular packed rice. The inside is usually stuffed using smoked salmon, smoked or pickled bonito, or pickled plums. Otherworldly Ventures sells these prepackaged at Mystia's Izakaya and Geidontei, as well as experimental box sets for market research. This is strictly volunteer only after Agappa Harume filled experimental onigiri intended for the Summer Lantern Festival with mint toothpaste. This in turn triggered the largest riot in Gensokyan history. The crowd would later be convinced this was the work of malevolent spirits.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

"Its coming Kogasa!"

Sekibanki dropped her basket. Ignoring the pained cry of Ichibanki. Much as it hurt, she needed her hands free. Magical energy made the very air feel electric as the horrific chimera lumbered towards them. Beside her, Kogasa glanced to Sekibanki nervously, then to the monster in front of them.

"Go home! Go home!"

Its voice billowed almost as though a battle cry. Her eyes looked to the monster, before she dropped her umbrella between them. The tongue lolling ineffectually towards the ceiling. The monster paused in its charge. Sekibanki glanced at her in shock. "What are you doing?!" She hissed. Her eyes going back to the Ao Bozu. Kogasa paid no attention as she pulled the basket behind her makeshift shelter. Flipping open the basket. The head of Ichibanki gave her a reproachful look as the basket opened. One Kogasa replied to with a pat upon the head before she began looking over the contents of the basket. Her hands tore at the seaweed wrapping beside Ichibanki before she grabbed a handful of the contents. A single pale hand trembling extending over the brim of the umbrella.

"Hi!"

The greeting was short, and thankfully had less fear than she thought it would have. The Ao Bozu eased form one side to the other on his many limbs. Kogasa delicately bounced the triangle of rice on her palm. "Are you hungry? We have onigiri! Enough to feed five girls! You're welcome to mine if you want."

The beast swayed like a pine tree in a faint wind. It occurred to Sekibanki the monster might be so feral it didn't understand Japanese. Kogasa however only swayed her hand with dogged determination. Hiding the fear in her expression behind the brim of the umbrella. "Pickled plum, smoked salmon, bonito flakes...ehh...jelly donuts..."

The Ao Bozu stood still. Before taking a slow step forward. Then another, and another. Each limb thudding like a crowd of human footfalls, for it used both its legs and arms to carry its weight. Coming to the umbrella, it extended the long shriveled arm of an old man, before taking the onigiri. Raising it to its mouth, and taking a bite. Even with only one tooth, it devoured the riceball eagerly. Kogasa smiled to herself as she raised her hand again, offering another, which vanished into the gaping maw of its third head. A third, then a fourth followed. As it finished, the old man's face let out a bleary gurgle, before it turned and walked--or perhaps crawled--back the way it had come. Sekibanki glared at her friend. Kogasa smiled back at her, the expression retreating at her friend's reproach.

"Well that was stupid Koggers. We could have been killed you know."

"Maybe," Kogasa conceded. "But it was only fair we tried. Once upon a time, we were Wild Youkai too you know."

A slow breath escaped Sekibanki's nose. The closest Kogasa knew to her friend conceding the point. Her smile blossomed anew as they watched the creature strolling deeper into the house. "Do you think he's lived here his entire life?"

"Must've. He's massive, and no one ever comes here. The Ofuda probably trapped him inside all these years."

The two watched his massive back shift as he walked. The figure's gaunt form retreating into the shadows of the back room. Kogasa may have saved his life twice over. Not only from Sekibanki's danmaku, but perhaps even showing it a way from life as a Wild Youkai. Though the Ao Bozu was little more than a dull brute for now, she hoped one day he would understand.

"Let's find our friend."

Sekibanki's boots thudded against the warped and rotting floor. Kogasa followed soon after.

Part of Oscar wondered why he was still sitting there. On a dirt floor in an old house. It was certainly in part fear of the monster, even if he had gotten the better of it twice. Though that at least was something tangible. Something to elude or outwit. But the longer he remained there, the more he came to the conclusion he wasn't still there for fear of the monster.

He was afraid of the world beyond.

He leaned back against the wall. Mind idly going over each of his tricks in between his thoughts. In the Outside World, life had made so much sense. Study, get a job, work hard. Along the way you find someone special, buy a home and have a few kids. Even if life was nothing like that in practice, it was a formula to follow. Instructions towards happiness and fulfilment. Now? He was in a place with fairies and flesh-eating monsters. He had been running in place for so long in the Outside World, the idea of starting over with nothing was just as terrifying as the monster overhead.

The Outsider's thoughts were interrupted as he saw something. An old white rabbit, wiggling its nose at him. The duel between exasperation and relief was short-lived as a footfall came on the stairs. He rose, unsure what to expect. At least it was not the Ao Bozu. The soft footfalls were far lighter than the bulk of the creature would allow.
By the light from the stairwell, he could see two figures in the dim light, both shorter than he. One in a red cape and a large bow, the other in a dress that was surprisingly sophisticated for its practicality. An umbrella held up in her arms. The first one glowered at the rabbit as it wiggled its nose at her. Before her eyes went to Oscar.

"Is he with you?" She asked irritably.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Thinking: "Did Agappa and Cirno send you?"

Laugh: "Indeed he is! And he has led you to me. I am Oscar Diggs the IVth, Great and Powerful magician!"

Sad: Make the old rabbit vanish into your hat. That will keep him safe, and show them your 'power'.

Stare: "You don't look like the other Youkai upstairs. You aren't from this place are you?"

Oscar slowly rose. The darkness shrouding him as though he himself were a spirit of this accursed place. The two youkai might have thought him to be one, were it not for the white rabbit perched in Oscar's arm. The magician's other hand scratching at the back of Houdini's ears. Oscar's legs wobbled against the uneven floor, but he managed to find his footing easily enough. All the while, his emerald eyes remained on the two. Even blocked by her cape, he could sense a small amount of doubt in her gaze, though it was outweighed by an anger that burned like cold fire. The other one seemed more nervous, even if she wasn't necessarily afraid. Her own heterochromatic eyes faint beneath the shadow of an umbrella obscuring her.

Oscar had not been in Gensokyo long. A little over a day perhaps. But he had learned a few things. There were humans in Gensokyo, there was an entire village of them out there. Normal people, with dull clothes and dull lives. They didn't wear bright clothes outside. Their hair and faces were Japanese, with dark hair and eyes. They spoke in fearful tones about the mansion, and were superstitious of simple things. Which meant these were Youkai.

"You don't look like the other Youkai upstairs. You aren't from this place, are you?"

Green eyes calmly assessed the two. The red-haired one on the right crossed her arms.

"You got that right. Your rabbit almost killed my best friend. Look at Ichibanki!"

Her hand dove into the basket at her side. An identical head to her own emerging, starting as though roused from sleep. A moment passed, before Oscar realized he hadn't started. After the events of the day, he was just too tired to be frightened. Houdini simply wiggled his nose.

"She looks...very pretty."

"Spare me human." The severed head returned to the basket with a squeak. The other figure leaned around the first. Her face apologetic.

"Ah, hello. I'm Kogasa. This is--"

"Don't tell him our names. He might hear."

The phrase was odd enough. The way Sekibanki's eyes dipped to Houdini only made it moreso. Oscar tried to brush the thought off as he raised his hat to Kogasa. He wasn't sure if it was a mark of respect, a playful gesture, or if he was so numb from the day he was just going through the motions of what felt right.

"Its a pleasure to meet you. I am Oscar. Oscar Diggs. This is my rabbit, Houdini. We were chased down here by the Youkai upstairs. I guess he brought you back to me somehow."

"How did you even get here?" The nameless girl asked, glowering at the rabbit.

"I went in through the balcony and--"

"No. What are you doing here?"

"..." A slow breath. He intended to get more information from them. But it felt like this had turned into an interrogation of him. The question was pertinent though. So much had happened he struggled to remember how he came to be there...ah, that was right. "I came here to raid the Fortune Teller's secrets, to divine a prophecy foretold to a shining witch."

The two Youkai were silent as they looked to one another, as though expecting an answer to be found written on one another's face. Their eyes went back to him. The nameless one spoke. "What's a prophecy?"

"...Its, like fortune telling, but for something very important."

"Ah."

The response was not too compelling. But it seemed enough to satisfy her for now. Even in his exhausted mind, he knew. This was the time to push the attack.

"I thought this village was for humans alone. How did you two come to be here?"

"Your stupid rabbit."

"No. Why were you two in the village?"

Sekibanki shrugged. "Its safer than out in the wilderness. Humans don't worry about youkai, so long as we keep a low profile and avoid notice. Food and shelter is easy to find, and aside from this place, there isn't anywhere feral Youkai usually appear. And they're all sealed in here."

"I see. They must really hate this place. What did its owner even do?"

The cellar went silent. For the first time, the nameless girl's anger seemed to fade. The other rolled the handle of her umbrella between her fingers. Nervousness etched into her face. Irrespective of the tongue and eye that swayed overhead. "L-let's get you out of here first."

"Yeah. Before either of you ask any more questions. Something we won't like might answer them instead."

The first girl turned, and started up from the cellar. Kogasa turned to him and gave a small shrug. Nervousness still on her face. "W-we should go. Our friends are waiting for us."

As the doors of the mansion opened, Oscar was momentarily blinded by the flood of light from outside. The fresh air of the countryside filled his lungs, and slowly the thought sunk into his mind. He was free. Free of what he thought might have been his grave. For a moment, he considered kissing the ground, or embracing the two girls, or simply jumping for joy.

"Let's get away from here." The nameless girl's words cut into his celebrations. Hurrying on, she strode down the stairs and past the cart by the road. Oscar and Kogasa following. She slowed as she reached the street, letting them catch up. The group was silent as they went, until they came to a bench. The redhaired girl sat down. Kogasa did likewise. Oscar, after sitting in the dark for so long, remained standing.

"So listen. I'm still mad at your rabbit for hurting Ichibanki. But..." Her eyes closed, before behind the cowl of her cape she took a deep breath. "I think he wanted us to help you, so I'll let it go. But I think you deserve a warning. That mansion is cursed. Everyone is afraid of it, and no one knows what's inside. For your own sake, its best other people not know you've been in there, or that you met us. It would end very poorly for both of you, and probably wouldn't be quick."

Oscar gazed at her, trying to work out what she meant. Fingers scratching at Houdini with an almost robotic motion. With a satisfied look in her eye, she stood and walked away. Kogasa hurrying after. "No fair! I wanted to scare him Sekibanki!"

Free at last. What now?

Thinking: Well, we have these spell books which need deciphering. Let's go into town for a drink, and see if we can find someone who can read them.

Laugh: Time to get back to the Heida Temple! Your friends are probably waiting for you.

Sad: Find an expert on Youkai and Hauntings to learn more about the house.

Stare: Headmistress Keine would doubtless know what's in here. I just need to find a way to get her to tell me...without giving away where I have been.

Greetings, my devoted followers! It is I, the great god of the Hakurei Shrine, tehehe. Just kidding, its...let's keep this our little secret for now

This is a little announcement, for the Kami of Gensokyo reading this page. After many trials and tribulations, our story continues. The author of Oscar's adventure is unable to promise if or when he can continue, but we shall hope he will be consistent, whether in his failures or success.

In other developments within the land of the Kami, the ❤️ emote no longer represents rest, but rather a *Complication*, fulfilling the role of the old up and down arrows. It has a chance to be either positive or negative. The exact odds depend on the situation, with no true guarantee even in an absolutely perfect or disastrous situation.

That is all.

The eyes of the townsfolk eyed him as he passed. Not that he could blame them. It was still sun-up, meaning the productive members of the village were still all out in the fields or on their boats. Not to mention Oscar was dressed strangely enough, without drawing attention to the thick dust that clung to him as he walked. Then were was the question if anyone recognized him from his performance the night before. He did his best to ignore their stares.

The Heida Temple loomed over the rest of the village like a protective guardian. Which was good, because he had no idea how to make his way around the village. He knew the street around the Temple well enough, but had it been missing, he would have been hopelessly lost. The road was mostly clear, save for a few children playing idle games in small groups on the dusty road. As he passed, the boys and girls waved as he passed. Bright smiles that were as bright as the sun, after his time in the Fortune Teller's basement. He gave them a wave back. A motion he soon learned was a mistake. In a small flurry, they came towards him in a rush, forming a half-circle around him.

"Hi Mister Magician!"

"Are you a real Magician?"

"Can you do magic for us?"

"I want to see danmaku!"

"Alright! Ladies and gentlemen, watch this!"

Oscar drew his trick wand from his coat pocket. Waving it idly over the nearest child's head. Only realizing as he started it was the redhead he had met that morning. The others watched intently. Though the young man looked ready to faint. Oscar tapped the boy on the forehead, making him instinctively flinch, before Oscar pulled the wand through one hand...

...And what emerged were a set of flowers.
He held it aloft, showing the children. The crowd was...strangely quiet. Before whispered conversations began among the assembled students.

"That's magic?"

"Its not like danmaku."

"Boring..."

The young man with red hair looked up at the flowers. His narrow jaw open, to reveal surprisingly slender incisors. Still gazing in awe. Before he turned around to face the others. "Don't you all be dumb! Sure, its not danmaku, but did you see what he did? He turned his wand into flowers! When was the last time you all saw Marisa do that? Can she even do that?"

The question settled over the group. Silence returning for a time. The redheaded student passing individual flowers to each of the other children. Some tested the flowers, others smelled them. But smiles began to appear on their faces, one by one, like spring blossoms pushing through the last of winter's snow.

"I guess it is pretty cool."

"You can't smell danmaku, right?"

"Can you teach me how to do that Master Osu?"

"Maybe later." He said. Mustering as calm and kind a smile he could. Though even as the excited chatter rose behind him, all Oscar Diggs could think of was a long soak in a hot bath...

Cirno had been inconsolable since they came home. All she could think of were her friends. One missing somewhere in the forest, probably crying and upset. The other lost in a youkai-infested mansion, or maybe he had left because he didn't like her. She didn't think that was true. Osu wasn't like that. But its what Wriggle thought...

"Therethere."

Wriggle said, patting the top of Cirno's head. It was a bit more forceful that Cirno remembered her doing before. But she was too upset to say anything about it. She sniffed, ignoring the frozen tears that clung to either cheek. Agappa sat with concerning silence, more than usual, staring over Wriggle's head. Across the room, Mystia lay in bed asleep. Daiyousei, still in her day clothes, idly brushed the sleeping youkai's hair as she watched the two.

But not the two Cirno would have thought.

"He's probably escaped back to his library," Wriggle commented smugly. "You know what magicians are like. He's probably just going to read the Fortune Teller's books for a few months, maybe even years and--"

A sudden commotion from outside drew Wriggle's attention. She stood without a word. Stalking to the window, her expression emotionless until her fingers landed on the sill. With a rush, she glowered down at the courtyard, feeling her lips withdraw as she let out a snarl of discontentment. It was him.

The small fairy pushed herself up by the window, drawn by the sudden change in her friend, more than the sound. Her blue eyes widened in shocked surprise.

"Osu..."

With a sudden bolt, she darted for the stairs. Forgetting her disguise, and even her shoes, in her excitement. Wriggle growled again, turning back to the window. Raw hatred warping her face as her fingers clenched at the windowsill. She wanted to throw herself out the window, lunge down at him with one of her legs and kick...that stupid magician would crumple like a sack of radishes, then she could throw as many danmaku at him as she wanted, and--and--

No one would ever try to take Cirno from you again.

Her thoughts echoed in her mind, as loudly as someone else's voice. Her cape whipped after her as she spun. Daiyousei was in the way. Agappa as well, though she was careful to keep the fairy in between the two of them. Indeed, Agappa's eye wasn't actually on Wriggle, nor the space it had been before. It was now fixed on the delicate Daiyousei, who sleepily brushed at the hem of her skirt.

"Mymy...I didn't want to get involved, but somehow things always happen around me...I think we should have a talk."

Wriggle blinked. The voice was Daiyousei. But the words she had chosen seemed...unusual. The passing thought that she had no room to talk was drowned out as her teeth bared in a leer.

Agappa's pupil only constricted, as she stared over the innocent fairy.

Wriggle has been acting weird. Daiyousei thinks she knows why, but how much should she reveal? And what can she get away with?

Thinking: Challenge Wriggle with a game to distract her, with a prize to...subtly, calm the situation.

Laugh: Begin with a few probing questions of happy memories with Wriggle, to prove you know what is wrong with her.

Sad: Show the thing inside Wriggle you know what it is, with a Hakurei Shrine ritual you learned a long time ago.

Stare: Appeal to Wriggle's newfound baser instincts to try and coerce her.

Wriggle's eyes glowered at Daiyousei as she stepped away from the door. Despite the murderous look in Wriggle's eye and the apprehension clear on Agappa's face, Dai did not look overly concerned. She simply picked up one of the pillows the group had been using. Fluffing it idly before setting it back on the ground. Still with that prim, almost subversive, smile on her face. Did she have any idea who Wriggle was? This stupid fairy, barely above average for her kind, was trying to stop her. Trying to keep her from Cirno.

She wants to take Cirno away from you. Don't worry. I won't let her.

"What do you think you're doing, fairy?" Wriggle growled. So possessed by her own thoughts, she did not even notice she had ignored Dai's name. "Do you think you could trap me in here if you tried?"

"I could surprise you," Daiyousei said as she slowly sat down on her knees. Her green eyes opened, only making her expression look all the more smug. So much so, Wriggle scarcely noticed the hue of her eyes was...off. "I think its been a long time since you and I talked alone. We should change that."

"Why?"

"Because we're friends." Her smile widened, if only by a little. "Isn't that what friends do?"

The molars in the back of Wriggle's mouth felt ready to crack, but somehow she could find no fault in Daiyousei's logic. Slowly breathing out, she contented herself with pacing opposite Daiyousei. Her arms stiff to either side as she looked ahead. "Fine. What do you want to talk about, fairy?"

"How about a game? Fairies enjoy games."

"What kind of game?"

"Oh, its simple. Yama's pet, the pills please."

She held her hand behind her expectantly. With surprising reluctance, Agappa reached her hand into her bag. Pulling free a set of three bullets, and placing them into Daiyousei's hand. Daiyousei held them out for the youkai to see.

"Do you know what these are?" Wriggle only shook her head with a snarl. Daiyousei's smile loomed menacingly. "These are death pills used by humans. Its a strange kind of danmaku they have, but far less beautiful. They're toxic to fairies, and youkai don't care for them either. Let's ask each other questions about our friendship with Cirno. Any time one of us answers incorrectly or tells a lie, we eat a bullet, until all the bullets are gone."

"What if we tie?"

"We won't."

"How do I know you aren't lying?"

"That's why Agappa is here."

Dai extended one hand. Letting each bullet clatter to the tatami mat with a dull thud. Agappa simply stared overhead. Wriggle observed the display. Before she let out a huff. Seating herself across from the great fairy, her knees raised. "Alright. But this better be worth my while."

"I think its fair you go first. Try not to...loose your head."

The phrase would have been entirely cryptic to a human. Or indeed, to most fairies and youkai. Even magicians and devils, being of pure magic, might have been entirely clueless, unless they knew of the ancient rituals of feudal Japan. Then perhaps they might have understood why Agappa stared so persistently over Wriggle, where her second sight could clearly see a phantom hound over Wriggle. Its head shifting idly in the air. The Fortune Teller's Inugami snarled, the face of Wriggle mirroring it moments later.

"Who is Cirno's best friend?"

"Wriggle, until last month when you argued over that stolen pie."

The bug youkai blinked in quiet surprise, before her gaze went to Agappa. The girl in her raincoat nodded. "Cirno former favorite friend, Wriggle. Mystia her friend the month before that, Daiyousei the month after, her current best friend is--"

"Thank you Agappa. I believe its my turn. Where did Cirno work for a week, and why?"

"That's two questions."

"You're very bright. I insist."

The growl seemed almost to echo in the room as Wriggle clawed at the floor in front of her. "Fine. She worked at the Scarlet Devil Mansion."

"And why?"

"To...ahh..." Wriggle's eyes glazed over as she leaned back. The pupils rolling back into her head, eyelids fluttering before she snapped awake again. "She...was trying to start a fairy revolution against the vampires."

"That is what she said. But no. Remember when you tore your hair out on that trap Agappa set? Cirno was trying to earn money for a tonic to regrow the hair you tore out."

"Liar."

"Really? And what did she get you days later?"

Silence pervaded the room. Before with a bark, Wriggle took the bullet and swallowed it. Teeth snapping in the light as she glared at Daiyousei. The great fairy only smiled back at her. She made a face as she continued. "What is Cirno's favorite color?"

"Its a tie between green and red. Green reminds her of you and I, red reminds her of Rumia and Lorelei. For my turn..."

What question should Daiyousei ask next?

 "How did Rumia meet Cirno?"

:Stare: "What is Cirno most afraid of?"
