The Amagami thread - an introduction to the cast V2

WE ARE SO BACK (at least for now; I have no idea when I will come back after buying another carton of milk...)

(Disclaimer: definitely not trying to initiate a cult...)

This is a new take on an old thread (late 2022) that I started, but which did not survive the platform transition outside of the Archive. Originally, I was planning to just copy-paste the text from that space and see if there would be different reactions compared to 2022-2023. However, as time went on and my direct interaction with the Amagami community increased, I ended up developing my thoughts a bit about it. Witness the descent into madness of a young Romanian political scientist/student, all started from something as insignificant as a character from a mostly forgotten game/anime adaptation of the late 2000s.

Here is the original text, started on 30th November 2022 (almost 3 years ago):

This is the off-topic section of the forum; I guess an off-topic thread works just as well. This originally started as a series of comments in the anime art style thread, but I have decided to dedicate it a special thread where to port the info and some fanart I really like. And maybe talk a bit about it, just like I did with the Len'en thread. Therefore, get ready for me talking about something not Touhou-related.

Some time ago, as I was randomly going through Pinterest, I randomly found this image:

1793928115437.webp

Due to a lack of context behind it, I just saved the image in a collection I have dedicated to nice-looking anime art style. Skip forward a few months, I found the character again as I was looking through the art galleries of Danbooru. At the time, I still did not really keep count of who she was, but I was happy to find the design again as I though she looks very pretty. This is an image I remember from back then:

Following this, it seems like I forgot again about the discovery for a few months, until about a couple of weeks ago. Again, I have rediscovered it through Danbooru, and this time it actually caught to me. That was the beginning of me starting a fall down another rabbit hole. Now to connect it with the original two posts from the anime art style thread. Another thing about anime art style. And quite a detour from the previous sub-topic (still open for discussion on that one, though). Had I not been told this is the same character, I would have thought they are completely different ones. The style used can make quite a difference, and is one of the things I like a lot about art in general. Good connection with the overall topic since this is based on an anime:

[several lost image files here]

No matter the art style, this is awesome. I just very fond of young women with black, wavy, shoulder-leght haircuts. It is my weak point; also make the hair a bit fluffy, and I feel like in heaven. And now with this, you are also aware of my tastes, at least in terms of art (gonna be interesting to actually rest this in real life at some point...). Plus, who can resist a cute, wholesome smile?

Now, for some more info on what is going on (with the whole show, or at the very least this character; I ae no idea why I am suddenly feeling so attracted to the traits and features of the design...). I made a little bit of research in regards to Amagami. To my surprise (pleasant or not, I have yet to decide), the original game is... a dating sim.

1793928309191.webp
Also this is quite on topic with the latest Amagami-related product... which I was honestly not expecting to be an ASMR (Artist: takayama kisai - source: https://mimicle.com/lp/amagamiasmr)

Danbooru takes the cake for the way to describe the series in their wiki section for Amagami:

"A dating sim game for the PS2 by Enterbrain, adapted into six manga anthologies and an anime series as Amagami SS, with an experimental omnibus in which each girl gets her story arc. In 2022, a series of ASMR videos performed by each of the main heroines was released by Mimicle. After being unceremoniously rejected two Christmas Eves ago, Tachibana Jun'ichi has since become reluctant to fall in love again. All that changes, however, when he reaches his second-year and encounters six girls who may give him a chance to love once again - a school idol, his tomboyish friend, a friend of his younger sister Miya, an ace swimmer, his childhood friend, and his class's Representative. Currently it's Japanese only, though a team on 4chan has been working on a PC rip and translation for some time now."

I do not necessarily hate the genre, but I am not the most fond of it either. I am feeling way too shy and easily flustered for even trying to play such a game, and maybe it is not my cup of tea. However, this Tanamachi girl has left a strong impression one me. I like the design - quite a lot actually, and like I have said further down the line in the post, she really fits into most of the design features (and overall physical appearance) details I like a lot.

I think a series of comments on Danbooru for a not-so-safe art piece sum up very well the feeling given by the design:

1793928510465.webp
That moment there is a naked woman in front of you, but you decided to focus on her haircut than the body itself (can't blame anyone here, that haircut really seems like the defining physical feature of Tanamachi Kaoru, it really steals the show)

Am I just slowly descending into madness? Down another rabbit whole of obsessions? This time, it is not about an entire series anymore, but just about a single element from a series. She (Tanamachi Kaoru) is very cute though, and that is something to probably appreciate, I guess... If I actually were to play the game, or read the manga/watch the anime, I would probably solely watch it to see her. Again, I am really fond of young women with black, wavy, shoulder-length haircuts. It is my weak point; also make the hair a bit fluffy, and I feel like in heaven. And the art style in which she is depicted can sometimes make the whole difference. That is why in the previous comment, I posted a variety of images about her - some of them from the official anime adaptation, others from the various artists. Overall, I really like the dedication of Amagami fans, as they are still drawing their series even of the oldest drawing uploaded to Danbooru for example are almost 15 years now.

And now for some lore (you can't escape me without having served some lore...):
  • General introduction (thanks to the Amagami wiki): Kaoru Tanamachi (棚町 薫 Tanamachi Kaoru) is one of the main characters of Amagami SS and Amagami SS+ plus. She, along with Rihoko Sakurai, is a childhood friend of Junichi Tachibana and a student of Class 2-A with Junichi.
  • Appearance: Kaoru has black, curly hair, black eyes, and an average bust size. She is described as "stylish" or "trendy".
  • Personality: Kaoru is a tough and hardworking girl who is both lively and unpredictable. She also has a habit of teasing and hitting Junichi Tachibana at seemingly random moments. She is also the main target of Junichi's perversion and she is also seen with Masayoshi Umehara (Junichi's best friend). She works part-time as a waitress at a family restaurant and sometimes in other part-time jobs to help her mother maintain their ability as a two-person family to live independently. Consequently, she is totally against it when her mother dates another man.
I will not spoil the rest, since most of the relevant stuff on the wiki comes from the endings of the game. I will not go into information about the anime either, as I think it would be better to be explored by everyone individually (I may do that at some point, perhaps). I will just leave a clip here though. I have not checked it yet, but I think it will not create any problems around (also spoiler for potential spoilers - again, I am not so sure if it is an actual spoiler, or just a moment selected by the user because it looked funny/cute in the anime):

(Lovely, no embeds...)

EDIT: Now I actually know what is going on in that video. The action in the video may seem like it's going one direction, given the way it is built up and if you are to go according to stereotypes, but the twist turns it into wholesome at the end. What I was surprised of though was the...squishy voice they gave Tanamachi. I'm not sure what I should have expected, but this one sure was a surprise when put next to the design itself.

Alright, so how far gone am I down the rabbit hole? I think this is the first time when I get interested in just a character from a series, and not the series as a whole. I just really like the design, and can always appreciate good fanart of any character. This is one of those perfect instances I kept mentioning in the past of how good fanart of a character can actually make you interested in a series. I may be one of those "posers"/"fake fans", only brought in for the waifu/cute young women part of the thing, but screw it. But in a way, I guess it works, given the nature of the source material (a dating sim game). I think I will try watch the anime at least one day.

(Also, a reminder I have to write a thread soon enough about what makes one a Touhou fan, so see you there in terms of new content)

Now, to look into a more refined take, once some time has passed (source/source/source):

Case file #1 - "Curious to learn more about Amagami" [16.02.2024]

Greetings! Recently, I had the chance to discover this place, and now I wanted to share some thoughts and a little bit of my experience with this series.

I discovered Amagami purely by chance almost 2 years ago. Back then, I was not aware of what this series is, as the only thing I saw was an image of Kaoru Tanamachi [this color shade of green has been particularly chosen, because this is the color the character is associated with in official media]. Things changed, though, in November 2022, when I rediscovered the image on online image boards. This time, I finally had a name for the character and series, and I became very captivated by it. Just like with any new thing I am becoming very interested in, I wanted to learn as much as I could about the series. In the end, I have watched Amagami SS and read as much as I could on the wiki, but there are still some questions I have (more on that later).

In February last year, I watched the anime adaptation, and I liked it much more than I expected. This was the first time I was actually watching an anime for the sake of watching an anime (I did watch things like Pokémon when I was little, but did not know what an "anime" is). And because, in the time since November, I actually grew very hyped for when I was going to finally watch Kaoru and her story arc. Let's just say that I REALLY LOVED the experience, as everything aligned perfectly that day to create as nice an experience as possible. Now I still need to watch SS+ Plus and the bonus content for that one.

Since I had my contact with Amagami, and even to this day, I have remained with some questions:
  1. Has this game ever been officially (or fan-made) ported from PS2 to PC or any other platform that would make it more accessible?
  2. Danbooru mentioned that there was an attempt made by the people of 4chan to translate the game and port it to PC. In the end, what happened with that project?
  3. Until I discovered Amagami, I used to be a devoted Touhou fan (and still am, to some degree). And because of Touhou, I have learnt of the expansive world of fanart/fan-made content. How much fan-made content is there for Amagami (fanart, fan manga, fan games, music arrangements, cosplaying, etc)?
  4. How big is the Amagami community, actually? Until recently, I did not even know this subreddit exists, but I have been pleasantly surprised because I finally thought I was no longer the only one around who knows and appreciates this series (even though I already managed to convert a few friends to liking it as well)
  5. Due to the fact that the only Amagami wiki I have found is on the Fandom platform, has there ever been a plan for creating a wiki outside of it (similar to how Touhou Wiki did)?
  6. How did you guys discover Amagami? For me, it was the luck of randomly finding an image of Kaoru on Pinterest, then finding it again on Danbooru months later. (And up to this day, I still really appreciate her; you can't change my mind)
If there is anything else I would like to ask, I will probably make an addition to this thread or in the comment section.

Case file #2 - "What was your first experience with Amagami?" [3.03.2025]

Spring 2022. At the time, I was very interested in drawing (and drawn art in general), and I used to visit image boards to find new things I enjoyed. During one such visit on either Pinterest or Danbooru, I found the following image. At the time, I did not see any associated name for the source or character, but I remember that I saved it.

Fast-forward to November 2022. During another visit to Danbooru, I found the full image. This time, I finally had a name for the character, as well as for the series she came from: Kaoru Tanamachi, Amagami. With her name and address in mind, I decided to take a further look and see what other interesting things I could find out about her. What I can say is that I was not disappointed. A lot of very nice art (both official and fan-made art), even if older in terms of release date (at the time, I was more familiar with recent IPs, even if I was already into Touhou since 2020). I thought Kaoru was very pretty, and so I wanted to know more about her, thinking there might be further interesting things to discover. It could have been just a temporary thing, as late 2022 was a moment when I kept switching between characters I liked, but circumstances made her stick for longer than I ever expected.

With my initial discoveries, I decided to start a thread on the Moriya Shrine Touhou forum (I would have liked to share it, but the website is still under repair/migration to another domain). The thread started with me talking about how much I liked Kaoru, along with posting fan art of her (one thing that I liked doing was crediting the artists doing the work). This went on for about a week or two until a colleague, who seemed to have become interested in the whole topic, asked me to broaden the thread by talking more about Amagami in general. Thus, I started a period in which I posted character profiles along with fan art, even if misguided at the time by the use of the (Fandom) Amagami Wiki.

After I completed the character profiles, there was the following breakthrough. During the winter break of 2022-2023, I started watching Amagami SS. This was briefly interrupted following Haruka's arc due to the final exams, but fate decided to bring another surprise.

Enter the end of January 2023. Oddly enough, around that time, I developed a strong craving for sweets, which only intensified after Kaoru's arc. It was a Friday night. Just after I finished my final exam of the semester, I decided to go out with some colleagues to celebrate. On my way back to the dormitory, it started snowing - the first snow of the year, covering everything in a nice layer. When I got back to my room, I made something warm to drink, and the first thing I chose to watch was the Kaoru arc (at the time, I had just started watching Amagami and was already very hyped for this one). All I can say is that it was the most wonderful night I had had in a long time. I can say this felt like a special experience, which is why I ended up liking something even more than I normally would. It can be said there was a strong combination of factors that led to me being the way you see me now, especially regarding anything about Kaoru Tanamachi. There's the character that may interest you temporarily, and then there's the character that you cannot forget or end up liking very much (2+ years, and still going strong).*

*At the time of writing this current thread, I am almost reaching the 4-year threshold...

Following her arc, there was one more change I made with the thread I mentioned earlier. It became a way both to review each arc and to express my thoughts and feelings as I continued watching. I did so until I finished the entirety of Amagami SS, after which I took a long break. Ever since, I kept promising I would come back and watch Amagami SS+, but I have yet to fulfill that promise. There are plenty of things I would like to do, but I tend to lag in finishing said things. Therefore, I would like to finish Azumanga Daioh first (4 more episodes to go, even if I kept delaying it for almost 2 years), and then I may be able to clear some time for SS+ Plus.

What was your first experience with this series, and how did you become hooked on it? I wrote more about that last year, so I will not repeat my words longer than necessary. Long story short, in my case, it is the kind of situation in which finding random art of a character from that series hooks you up, and then you become increasingly more interested in the original topic/the series that character comes from.

Lesson learnt: Kaoru gets all my admiration and will probably live rent-free in my mind for a long time. There's just something I appreciate about her that makes me want to keep her close, as much as I can.

r/Amagami - That smile, that damned smile. Fanart by Takemi Kaoru (linked below), probably one of my favorite Amagami fanart creators; he has way too many good drawings for me to choose just one.

Case file #3 - "Is Amagami becoming popular again?" [21.03.2025]
This is something I've been wondering about after a discussion with a friend. He showed me some recent tweets (I refuse to call that platform anything but Twitter; I'll die on that hill) about Amagami and characters from the game, and there seemed to be either a lot of people who enjoyed that, or that seemed new and were interested in the idea. Has there been anything that happened to ensure Amagami would suddenly become popular in the Western world? Until recently, I thought this was a niche community, connected to a game genre that received a lot of stigma and negative stereotypes/jokes about (both the games themselves and the kind of people who play them) and with a limited fandom. I would be happy if it were the case, or, maybe even better, finally get rid of (at least some of) the stigma associated in the West with dating sims/romance games.

1793931592745.webp
(Even now, 15 17 years after the game came out [16 in the case of Amagami SS, and 14 in the case of Amagami SS+ Plus], there is still official media being produced related to Amagami, while the city of Chōshi has annual events celebrating the game...)

Bonus round:
  • Amagami is probably one of the first anime I ever watched, or at least one of the first I watched knowing that I was watching an anime (I remember that I grew up with shows like Kyoro-chan, Bakugan, or Inazuma Eleven on Cartoon Network, but at the time, due to dubbing, I used to treat them as just another cartoon, not making the difference between something made in the US or Japan). Amagami was one of the first, if not the first, series I got into, knowing that "yes, I am watching an anime". This was past the phase when I used to adhere to the memes (mostly due to the memes) that anime is cringy or for losers. I am so glad I got past that phase...
  • I am still looking for the day when I will play the game. However, I think one of the main things that keeps me away from it is a sheer feeling of awkwardness. Had it not been for a feeling of stigma ("games for no-life losers"), as well as sheer embarrassment, I would have already played Amagami (given I've been curious about that game for more than 2 years, and that recently I discovered there's a PC port of the game, with an English translation). And yet, I still feel heavily embarrassed even to think about playing it... Imagine that if it took me several days just to open the freshly installed Kisekae art creator for feminine characters, imagine the sheer "death by cringe/embarrassment" I would feel if I installed, let alone started playing Amagami
1793931768119.webp
A look at the Amagami cast, through a piece of fan art created by online artist Takemi Kaoru (definitely not a coincidence that name...)

[P.S.: it is already late 2026, and I still need to watch Amagami SS+ Plus]

Alright, with all this in mind, I will open the floor to any further discussion. I hope I am not the (only) Lunatic person in this whole thread...

Have a nice day/evening/night, and see you... whenever I am getting back to the keyboard.
