I was doing a little bit of research tonight on how to properly cook turnips (they're quite good when boiled, mashed, and served alongside meat and potatoes) when I unexpectedly came across a name I'm all too familiar with: Hakurei.
As fate would have it, there's a specific variety of Japanese turnips called Hakurei turnips. They are a hybrid species that also go by the names of Tokyo Cross, Market Exchange, Shogoin, Salad, and simply Japanese turnips. They were originally bred in the 1950s to be a small, smooth, and sweet turnip that's ideal to be eaten raw (or in a salad, hence the name). Interested, I dug a little bit deeper and found that they're relatively easy to grow. The seeds are planted very shallow, readily germinate directly in a pot, and only take around 35-45 days to grow from seed to edible root. They grow best in cool temperatures, namely early spring, late summer, and early autumn.
Seeing as how the temperature where I live is very close to the recommended 10-15°C and because I'm a sucker for anything related to Touhou, I'm going to tap into my inner Youmu Konpaku by attempting to grow some! I already purchased some seeds earlier tonight, and they should be here by the end of next week. I'll keep this thread updated with how my progress is coming along, hopefully I actually manage to grow something that doesn't die in the first month like all my other attempts at gardening. XD
