Questions from a new fan

I am a fan of Touhou's music scene. Why does the fandom consistently draw characters more lewd and differently than official? As an example, I cannot find a single instance where Reimu is officially depicted with her mid-section shown yet majority of fan drawings do. I wonder if this came from a source I'm unaware of or if this is the typical all-horny-fandom. I do not mean this as an offense; I want to personally know if there's a region in this fandom for me to explore beyond the music as I have an aversion to the horny fandom-type.

probably comes from ZUN being somewhat lax with fan content so fans will naturally have a universal depiction of a character depending on the material. MoP comes up as an example where they are depicted in a fanservice-ish way. And ofc the abundance of hot spring scenes lol.

I'm not complaining, but whenever I see a ZUN style art of a character it is kinda cool because it can be rare.
 
I would also be curious about this, how did the fans come to a consensus about how each character looks? It seems to me that sometime in the 2000's a "consensus Reimu" for instance was made and since then her design in fanart/doujinshi has remained pretty consistent. Would be curious to know how this process happened
 
Sex sells. Especially for doujin works.
 
Horny people spend money. It's that easy.

People are free to imagine characters in whatever clothes they want. I'd say that mischaracterizations of personalities is a bigger sin than clothes not matching canon.

As for SFW art, every fandom has an area like that. Follow artists that do the stuff you like.
 
my theory is because ZUNs got this his own unique artstyle, people gotta reinvent some of the proportions when making fanarts

Fans like to draw different things. There are a lot of fanarts which don't have sensitive/horny things and there are also ones which have them. That is a normal thing for doujin. To be honest, Touhou fandom is not very horny comparing to other anime/otaku series. There are a lot of corners in Touhou community without sensitive things.
About Reimu it is mostly due to her design. She has a red skirt, a red top and a white sarashi under it or/and something like a white shirt. If only sarashi is used then midsection may be visible (especially if the top is not very long). Fanarts with such ideas appeared in 2003-2004 (those days a lot of fanon interpretations were forming). So it is not surprising that such design became widespread in fanworks.
