Opinion on Metroidvania genre?

What is your opinion on Metroidvania games?
I'd like to share my thoughs on Metroidvania and see what others has to say about it since i've been interested for some time in this genre

To me for some reason it's one of my fav genres, i like the satisfaction of finding something that will give me access to items/rooms i couldn't access before, as well as one-hitting enemies, i would say i like going thorough the map in general (although it's rarely boring), in cases of some Super Metroid Romhacks that just slightly edit the original game it's fun to go to places you're not supposed to go early

I wonder if people prefer the collectathon of Metroid or the leveling up system in Castlevania more in terms of getting more powerful...

As someone whose majority of his playtime is centered around racing games, who spent a total of thousands of hours total playing Gran Turismo, Forza (both Motorsport and Horizon), Tokyo Xtreme Racer (Mainline and Drift series), Need for Speed, and so on:

it's fine. Cookie-cutter example but, I enjoyed playing Touhou Luna Nights. In a way, Sakuya's time-stop ability felt not only powerful but was well-integrated with the mechanics of the game. Didn't finish it as I've switched to PC and didn't know anything about where to get free stuff but, certainly was enjoyable while I had major skill issues. Other than that, I don't play any metroidvanias, though I know people in my entourage who are fans of it.

Wait metroidvania games have leveling up systems? I though it's Touhou Luna Nights exclusive (prolly cuz it's the only Metroidvania i have ever touched that isn't a Metroid Romhack)

iirc luna nights is based of the sotn castlevania series of games.

Actually now that I think of it, metroidvania is a pretty loose term. Would Dark Souls be considered a metroidvania? Or even something like Zelda 2?

Sometimes i would consider classic Doom a Metroidvania cuz in some levels you have at the beginning locked rooms so you go the only available for now way in order to get a key that will unlock the door you couldn't open at the beginning of the level

I am quite fond of Metroidvania games, I also believe that today actually marks the release of the new Castlevania game "Castlevania: Belmont's Curse" Excited to give a try in a few days, I've played a lot of them and so far my favorite non-Castlevania one has to be "Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night" a game I had a lot of fun with

iirc the bloodstained dev team are ex devs of the castlevania series. And Belmont's Curse is going to be made by the Dead Cells team. I wonder how much they'll pull from the gameboy games since that's where the first female belmont appeared.

So hear me out. Technically, Ace Attorney is a metroidvania because getting items from one place and then backtracking will unlock new stuff and even areas. And the courtroom trials could be considered boss fights.

Suitable with new or novel ideas, but generally oversaturated in the gaming market. I was never a huge Metroid fan, but I love the original Symphony of the Night to the moon and back. The main problem is that the genre became so popular in the indie scene that everyone and their mom has released their own metroidvania. Most of them don't try anything new or exciting, so it often feels like I'm replaying the same game over and over again with a slightly different coat of paint.

Those that do stand out, though, tend to be some of the best games I've played. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is hands down the best game in the series thanks to how well the upgrades jive with one another, allowing for some extremely fun and fluid movement throughout the world (bonus points since the level-based nature let the devs put in a game mode where you have all upgrades from the start).

My personal favorite has to be Blasphemous, which takes a very unique approach to progression. You can beat the adventure without any 'upgrades' (equippable relics), but most the game's content is hidden behind side quests and other areas off the beaten path. It's the Majora's Mask to the genre's Ocarina of Time, and the heavy inspriation of Spanish Catholicism on the game's setting makes it super memorable. Still have yet to play the sequel, though, hoping to do that soon.

The Binding of Isaac is also a Metroidvania cuz normally you can't go to the home unless you go down to the mausoleum and pick dad's note so you can ascent to floors you already have been in and then go to the final stage which is home so it's basically going down and then backtracking in order to beat the game, there are also upgrades and boss fights + the gameplay isn't linear cuz there are different paths

metroidvania's are my second favorite genre (1st are bossrushes) because I really like games with a bunch of movement opportunities and the idea of being able to reach new places with those movement opportunities rather than them just be purely combat oriented. Another big plus and maybe my main reason for liking them, is that they tend to have super cool and fun bosses. Ender lilies/magnolia, blasphemous, arum's, have some of the favorite bosses.

I always suck at the bossfights in metroidvanias :RemiSob:
it's really difficult for me to not get hit (or atleast in metroid and the romhacks, i noticed i fought the same bosses so many times and i still cant dodge)
