This is my first post here in the forums but I do frequent the discord server.

This is an event were 2+ players will play a touhou danmaku game and see who can reach the furthest within an hour(depending on the game ofc). I hold a poll in the server to see who is interested in such event and another one where I handpick 3 games to see which one the players want to play and the audience wants to watch. If there is a poll feature on the forums then I can reliably post about this event that I will hold biweekly. This thread will act as an archive of the events we held.

Why bullet hell games?

I myself am a shmup enthusiast. I think it is one of the best and most rich genres ever there. I think the genre is misunderstood for the ill-informed. So I want to show off how cool this genre can be by using a wide-ranged interest such as Touhou since it originated from bullet hells. Additionally, shmups have well paced gameplay. It's arcade-y and anyone can understand it as long as the gimmick is straight forward. That's the beauty of shmups.

Who is this for?

For the first event I gathered 4 players who are relatively beginners. They will play on normal difficulty, use any shot type, and restart however many times they want. I plan to rotate between beginner-friendly kumite, an expert kumite, and lastly a shmup kumite where anyone can join. This will be an opportunity to show off some cool touhou fangames + shmups out there.

When and where will this be held?

I will host it in a discord vc at saturday weekly(probably in the server with mod perms if possible or in a group) @ 4PM/5PM | 16:00/17:00 UTC. I will also be live streaming it on my YouTube channel. I personally prefer Youtube over Twitch as the site can be a bitch when it comes to what I can say + guidelines. I will have the vc open between the players to chat and shit talk for funs.

AAH7 was the first to get a 1cc! Therefore he is the winner! We had a lot of technical issues with 3 of the players. Where there was a bug that skips some bosses completely or crashes the game...

Setup:
  1. Download the PT.zip. If you want PT but with assets(better sfx, character sprites and portraits) then download PTassets.zip.
  2. Make sure your locale is japanese or download a locale emulator. Otherwise the game won't work well.
  3. Extract the folder inside and double click on vpatch.exe to run danmakufu 0.12. Select 'ALL'(it might take a while to load). You will find an option called "Phantasmagoria Trues".
  4. Once you select the game it'll ask which shot type you want to use. On the surface it's Reimu and Marisa with A and B shots from PCB. Not many know but they have been adjusted slightly in PT.
  5. Once you have selected the shot type the main menu of the game is displayed. Select the last option which is 'Tuning'.
  6. In the Tuning menu:
    • Trail Mode: false
    • Zone: Unlimited(for faster resetting)
    • Light mode: (set to true if the game is a bit laggy)
    • Release: I highly recommend you set this to User. The release will be set to C key. Shot will set it to pressing Z twice and bomb is X key.
    • Play music: on(duh)
    • Simple Mode: false
  7. If you follow all these steps. Then make sure to play test a bit and see if there is slowdown or any problems.

  • Win condition: Clear without continues.

Do you plan on hosting similar event for other shumps too? Or will you strictly focus on touhou?

For now it will be Touhou because one, its well known and this is a touhou community. two, the games are very accessable.

Once I get used to this type of event we can add a shmup kumite to the rotation to spice things up.
 
Update: It was fun! we had to replace one of the players but it turned out well! Here is the VOD. Next event is gonna be for the expert players. Do tell me if its better to keep it in one thread or to make a new thread about it. The game poll will be in moriya shrine discord server.

For next time I'll practice a bit more so I don't end up doing awful blunders that annoy the crap out of me. Was fun though, definitely a cool event.

I talked to Motivated about this today. The best way to practice is by playing touhou 6, or a game with no gimmick. touhou 4, 5 and 10 work too. you will get the hang of dodging.

UFO is just mean if you don't play by its rules so I get that. Not everyone can be good at it and the skill requirement is high. Whenever the beginner kumite comes around ill make sure to pick games easier than UFO.
 
Only got to see, like, the last 30 minutes of the UFO one but that one was a ton of fun to watch.

The shmup one sounds the most interesting right now because it reminded me of a CERTAIN other event in a CERTAIN Touhou replay server.

Also can't wait to play for the fangame one lol cuz i haven't touched anything Touhou related for almost an entire month.

oh is it that one event that runs on weekends? I heard they clogged up their shmup replay queue since 2024.

Hello Moriya shriners. We had some fun kumites. 13 events is a lot. And I am glad that players and non-players participate someway or another. There will be a 1 month break. And hopefully we will be back. Polls will still occur in moriya shrine.
 
We will be back on the 28th of March. Next event will be for the expert players. Poster and player list will come soon.
