How many youkai visitors are there at the Hakurei Shrine?

In terms of visitors who visited the Hakurei Shrine often or stayed there for an extended period of time, we should also add in the Three Fairies of Light, Yukari, Kasen, Clownpiece. Sukuna, and Shion in addition to Marisa, Aunn, and Suika.

Now, if we talking about Hakurei Shrine visitors in general, that is going to be hard to figure out with how long the Hakurei Shrine has been an important location for Gensokyo but let's try anyway.

Every character in IaMP count as visitors since every story ends with them going to the Hakurei Shrine to resolve the incident with Suika, who would end up in a drinking party due to Suika's density abilities. This adds Sakuya, Patchouli, Remilia, Alice, Youmu, and Yuyuko.

In IN's extra story prologue, princess Kaguya shows up on her own to Reimu and co. to tell them to take on the trial of guts, otherwise known as Mokou Fujiwara.

Aya has obviously already visited the shrine already due to her reporting. Still, here's Reimu's article from BAiJR showing Aya reporting on a flower viewing party at the Hakurei Shrine.

Can't forget about Rei'sen! She stayed at the Hakurei Shrine after being injured from her crash landing on Earth as seen in SSiB ch2.

For SWR, Komachi, and Iku can count as new visitors to the shrine, through at the time they could only see the destroyed home of Reimu.

We all know that Tenshi destroyed the shrine, but we also need to count the crew of celestials that helped rebuild the Hakurei Shrine as seen in SWR Reimu ending.

Orin stayed at the Hakurei Shrine for some time after being caught by Yukari during SA Reimu Ending.

During the events of HM, Byakuren, Miko, Ichirin, Futo, and Mamizou all visited the Hakurei Shrine during the course of their religious fighting. Of course, we must include the audience for the shrine, which uniquely includes Ran, Chen, and a fairy maid Remilia brought over.

During the events of ULiL, Mokou, Koishi, and Sumireko all fought at the shrine thanks to the Urban Balls that Sumireko brought into Gensokyo.

For AoCF, Joon visited the Hakurei Shrine after cleaning up their mess as shown in Joon & Shion ending

Lily White showed up at the shrine to tell that spring has come as a midboss for HSiFS stage 3.

At WaHH ch8, a youkai fox slipped into the Hakurei Shrine due to its interest in the shrine's parties.

During WaHH ch16, we can see Momiji, Nitori, Kyoko, Mystia, and Yuuka come to a flower party at the shrine. During that same chapter Sanae shows up at the shrine during the aftermath of the party.

During FS ch42-ch43, Kosuzu sets up a one hundred ghost story reading event at the Hakurei Shrine, which in addition to Kosuzu, we can find Akyuu participating in the event. As an bonus, we can also find Kokoro dancing at the event as well.

Misumaru can be directly seen talking to Reimu about yin-yang orbs during UM Reimu Alt ending.

Satori visited the Hakurei Shrine during her work, and Mizuchui visited the Hakurei Shrine when she processed Marisa during the events of FDS ch5.

Zanmu, Yachie, Saki, and Yuuma all celebrated at the Hakurei Shrine to celebrate avoiding large-scale conflict with the animals and Gensokyo as seen in UDoALG Zanmu ending.

As I have said before, tracking every Touhou character appearances is quite difficult when spread across the games and printworks. My list isn't inclusive of everyone, but it goes to show how many people have been to the Hakurei Shrine despite the common statement that Reimu's shrine is usually empty of any visitors.

Really, we should be asking who hasn't been confirmed to have visited the Hakurei Shrine at all. Pretty sure that Momoyo hasn't taken a trip to the Hakurei Shrine...

Here is a Google spreadsheet of which Touhou character has visited the Hakurei Shrine before, defining the area of the Hakurei Shrine to be within the perimeter of the shrine grounds. I have also decided to add some data analysis about the types of people who visit the Hakurei Shrine, which meant categorizing what species and the importance the characters had.

Touhou characters count PC-98 game characters, Windows game characters, and book/CD main characters. What isn't included are PC-98 mini bosses, characters only mentioned by name, and Hisoutensoku, and instead considered extra characters.

Extra characters describe more generic characters that lack few or any characterization, such as animals, youkai, and fairies. Though, I only added entries for unique species as to avoid analyzing background characters to see if they differ from another background character.

Moving on, each character is classified a single species out of this list of ten species: Human, Youkai, Fairy, Magician, Spirit, Lunarian, God, Celestial, Hermit, and Machine. These species are to group characters moreso on how humans would view them, and is not meant to be accurate to the actual species the characters are.

Results

As of the latest Touhou work, *UDoALG*, there are a total of 160 Touhou characters. Of the Touhou characters, 98 of them have visited the shrine, meaning 61.20% of the Touhou cast have been at the shrine before, and remaining 62 of them could not say they visited the Hakurei Shrine.

Reason for Visit (Named).webp
A Chart on the reasons Touhou Characters visited the Hakurei Shrine. "NO VISIT" meant they did not visit the Hakurei Shrine.
Now, after defining each Touhou Character a species, it can be stated that 42.9% of visitors are Youkai and 12.2% of visitors are Human, so considering that humans are outnumbered by youkai 3.5 times over, it is safe to say that the Hakurei Shrine is a Youkai Shrine.

But what about the rest of species? Not everyone is so cleanly divided into Human v. Youkai, and not to mention some species of like hermits and celestials have amiable relations to humanity. So, let's try to divide the rest of species onto two different sides: Human, or Youkai.

Human: Humans, Gods, Hermits, Celestials, Lunarians, Machines, Lunarians
Youkai: Youkai, Fairies, Magicians, Spirits

Even with this division, 68.75% are a part of the Youkai side, and 31.25% are a part of the Human side. It looks like the Hakurei Shrine can still be considered a Youkai Shrine.

Extras

Below the "EXTRAS" row on the sheet is a catalog of extra characters, featuring a mix youkai, animals, fairies, and more joining on the shrine. During PC-98, there a lot random creatures being summoned at the shrine. Post PC-98, the fighting games and Touhou manga, notably WaHH, add to the extra creatures.

Trends of NO VISIT

There are some trends along those who have not visited the shrine, and for them a explanation is in order.

Kisume, Yamame, Parsee, and Yuugi are all part of the underground, and my best theory on their absence is that the underground has better parties than the shrine given how separated underground culture is to the above ground culture.

Nazrin, Murasa, Shou, and Nue all haven't shown up at the shrine. Presumably the rest of the Myouren Temple would find traveling to the Hakurei Shrine a waste of time considering their existing religious duties.

Wakasaghime, Kagerou, Benben, Yatsuhashi, and Raiko don't appear appear at the shrine, though the cast of DDC have different reasons for their absences. Wakasaghime is a water creature, so a visit to the shrine would be difficult when the shrine is surrounded by land. For Kagerou, her affinity to live at the Bamboo Forest as a beast youkai might of dissuaded her from the shrine's parties for their lively social setting. And if this is true, then it gives a strong reason for Kagerou to be part of the Grassroots Youkai Network as a quieter form of social interaction. As for the musicians, it seems that musicians ignore the shrine when picking concert locations, since playing loud music at Reimu's home would certainly annoy her and cause the musicians to get kicked out. But what about all those events hosted at the shrine? It might be that these musicians prefer to play only at their own concerts.

Beyond these trends listed, there a notable lack of representation of characters starting from HSiFS, though time will tell if these characters will reappear in the Touhou printworks.
