honestly how do I get into playing more touhou

Play touhou 10, imo it's way more friendly towards newbies
honestly quit playing 2hu 6 because the first 2 stages were fucking cancerous (in the sense they were so boringly easy) so easier for me does not mean better ;3

Practice, try to memorize patterns, and you can watch better people play it if you feel too stagnated.
I'm no expert, but the most important thing is practice if that's what you want to achieve.
Good luck and have fun!

...This is memo to me, brah.

1) Playing Touhou is like driving a car, you've gotta be looking ahead to anticipate what's coming. Gradually start shifting your view towards the center part of the screen when you don't have bullets directly around you, and use the extra split seconds to devise a route to get out of harm's way.
2) Use you bombs liberally, as they're use or lose. Better to bomb when you didn't need to than to eat a bullet because you thought you were clear.
3) Download the thprac app and use it to practice specific stage or boss sections that are giving you trouble. Very useful since only a select number of games have spell card practice, and the game's default practice mode only goes so far.
4) Just play more Touhou, simple as it sounds. You naturally get better at the games the more you play them, so don't beat yourself up too much if you're not making much progress or are having a bad day.
5) For a beginner, here's my recommendations for shot types:

PCB:
  • Use: Sakuya A - Good due to homing knives while focusing and extra bombs per life. Allows you to focus on dodging rather than hitting the enemy.
  • Avoid: Marisa B - Bad damage, less bombs per life, and the hardest stage four boss. A straight downgrade from Marisa A, which is okay.
IN:
  • Use: Border Team - Series' smallest hitbox on Reimu + Long deathbomb window + homing shots = Great survivability
  • Avoid: Magic Team - Alice sucks as a character, bad focused shot and even worse bombs. If you want power, play either Scarlet or Netherworld team.

I recently completed TH6 as my first 1cc, and the fun I found in the earlier stages after getting them down was 1) enjoying the music, and 2) playing risky for the score pickups to try and get an extra life earlier than usual. I never really got bored of them though, as it takes all of a couple minutes to get to the bosses, which should at the very least be engaging if you're playing on the right difficulty, imo.

I keep cycling between 2hu7 and 2hu8 and I want to stop sucking ass at them
In this case I will have to lend you the "birb method".

Whenever I start playing a shmup or a touhou bullet hell. I try to understand how the game works on a surface level; let's take Touhou 7 for example. I will read a bit of the character description before choosing them. Most things will be unknown to me like cherry, item penalty and such. So we ignore them and try the game.

You just gotta fuck around, observe, and you will understand how some mechanics work. e.g. the pink number at the bottom left reaches +50,000 then gives you a border(1 hit shield). this can be understood from observing the UI and what elements matter. For most touhou bullet hells. ZUN has a thing for having the gimmick on the bottom left. same with touhou 8, 10, 11, 12 etc. You'll later find out that these pink items when picked up show a red number. Most probably "1,000". Eventually you will pick one of the pink items and a border will activate. this will make you figure out that pink items increase the pink number at the bottom left. What I'm saying is let the game naturally open up to you. And you might find something fun out of it.

EDIT: If you want to improve you gotta play. No way around it. This genre is hard, but that's the draw of it.

honestly I sometimes do, then rage quit back into hard mode
:Reimu:
Hard mode? That's part of the issue right there; The difficulty in most games usually goes normal>extra>hard, with the jump from normal to hard being pretty big (not as big as hard to lunatic, though). You also have to deal with the advanced spell cards that bosses won't use on normal mode. I'd recommend at least trying to get a 1cc on normal mode and beating the extra stage before trying hard mode.
