do you think the touhou community should stay small?

Buwako

True God of the Boriya Shrine
its not THAT small, but its not really big enough to where a decent amount of people can recgonize what it is or to the point where you can consider it mainstream. do you think it should stay as a niche series with a little community or should it gain more popularity to where more people will recgonize it and more people are fans of it?

I think it should become whatever it will become as things go.
(I was writing about 'why' for like 35 minutes, but then it became too much effort after too many revisions with new considerations, so I'll leave it at that.)

Small? Man are we looking at the same thing? Because it is NOT small!
Sure, not a lot of people in the general sense can recognize it, but that's because the average western fan doesn't interact much outside of the established stuff, so what that means is that most people who would know about touhou (AKA the anime/Otaku guys) simply doesn't explore outside of the ultra-mainstream.
Look at Japan and China for example, if anything it is too big for it's own good, it's engrained into their culture one might argue, so it is not small by any means.
Anyways fuck western touhou.

if by small you mean remain outside the western mainstream i guess so.
seeing the way stuff like jjk and csm blew up way out of proportion makes me weary of anything going mainstream over here now at days.

i dont think touhou is small in the west by any means honestly speaking. Its definetly more popular in the east but thats more or less because it is eastern media after all.

No, I doubt it even is "small" in the west. I have even met people who knew about touhou in person. Furthermore, if you go online, you will see touhou refrences in people's online profiles 'n stuff, or even in games.

sorry, let me rephrase that: should touhou become more mainstream outside of japan? i guess i should've specified more, since it is one of the most popular things in japan.

it could just be where i live, but touhou is practically nonexistent in my area. i dont think even the anime kids know its existence, despite all the popular memes coming from it. the one and only time i have ever been lucky to find touhou merch was at a japanese store that was selling random items from japan and they happened to have those touhou keychains a company was selling. as far as im concerned, they got rid of them within a couple of weeks. every time i have asked people if they knew what touhou was irl, they say they dont. almost every time i tried asking a friend to try touhou, they tell me that they dont like bullet hell. sure, you can find people from the west who know about touhou online, but to me its more meaningful to talk about your favorite interests in person with friends who like the same thing instead of through a screen. not that im saying i dont like talking about touhou online, but online can only be so much.

i dont think touhou is big in the west, but that doesnt mean theres not fans of it.

I'm going to play contrarian here and say that I actually don't want the (western) community to grow any larger that it is right now. Compared to other fandoms I've seen or partaken in, Touhou is one of the more chill and level-headed of the lot. More folks in the community means more chances for bad apples (pun unintended) to come in and turn things upside down. God forbid this series becomes popular with young, western children and it turns into the next Deltarune fandom.

That said, I mostly tend to myself and don't have much interaction with community members outside the occasional post here. I suppose the fandom will go where the fandom goes, whether it be for the better or worse.

Oh gosh! Imagine how much more flanderized the characters would be in such a case.

this is what makes me weary of anything going mainstream over here in the west. Deltarune is a really enjoyable game for example, but the fandom that surrounds it is something i cannot withstand.
fandom culture devolved into warring states where people fight for their own headcanon rather than actually enjoy the series they "like".

about the headcanon thing, it seems that a lot of people will get so upset if you dare call kris anything other than they/them. theres nothing wrong with headcanoning kris as that, but as far as im concerned, kris is ambiguous like frisk. their argument basically boils down to "kris is not a self insert so they are non binary!" but like,

they dont need to be a self insert to be ambiguous?

almost all the len'en cast is ambiguous. none of them are self inserts. niko also is ambiguous. it could not be more clear that niko isnt.

if it turns out to be canon that kris is non binary, thats fine. and im willing to switch. but for something thats not even confirmed if canon yet, people sure do get mad about it.

i do love deltarune, and the memes and animations are generally great, but the fandom is mm... not perfect.
Kanae is technically a self-insert…

thats something the deltarune fandom inherited from the undertale fandom.
undertale fandom was hellbent on their headcanons way back in the day. so much so most of the characterization you see in fancontent is almost entirely made out of popular headcanon.
its quite a shame since both games are pretty enjoyable but the community is for the most part insufferable.

JynX's self-insert
what i mean by self insert is more of the player inserting themselves into the character they play as in a game rather than the creators self insert

That's rich coming from the same fanbase who has the same headcanon issue as UT/DR.
In fact, the issue which Deltarune has is a reflection to what Touhou was post-PCB.
Since in that era, almost everybody with their dog here always portrayed the fan interpretation of each of every character as if it was fact, instead of just doing it for the sake of fun. Because I know that some people didn't played or at least watch a walkthrough of the games (which funnily enough, not even the creator seems to care if the retro games are any indication, plus it's more accessible now thanks to fans, I mean where are we right now?). It's one thing if it was open-ended and left to interpretation, except that we already got a grasp of what the characters are, by that it's more insulting to claim something which they are really not. This kind of mentality didn't just taints new blood who got in for the first time, but also gaslights long time fans into thinking that THIS is what they're actually like.

Cirno and Alice are the most notorious example and the poster children of what am I talking about. The former got reduced to a joke by the crimes of being just energetic and silly. While the latter got reduced to the most degenerate shit I've ever seen, all for the sake of a ship which didn't exists in canon.

Of course, even back in the day, the fanbase wasn't as horrid as Undertale, but I wouldn't call it "perfect" either.

If you think touhou is small, you haven't seen the East's response to touhou.
As someone once said, Touhou is used for the East's slop.

Honestly, this is really the worst I've seen out of the fandom. I'm not saying the fandom is perfect by any stretch of the word, but, perspective-wise, it's better than others. Yeah, I really don't like how Eiki is usually portrayed as a short and breast envious brat, but at least I don't have 13-year-olds screeching at me for not taking that interpretation as word of God or having people getting into arguments over a fictional character's pronouns or skin tone.

As I have seen several times, once you have gone to some parts of the internet, you will never want to stop punching deltarune fans with your own hands. They truly are the tyranids of the internet. At least the Western Touhou fanbase is somewhat manageable with its degeneracy, the deltarune fanbase is just... No.
