...there was a hero that everyone loved. This hero was from a time long before the famous incidents we know today- even before the Scarlet Mist and the Imperishable Night incidents. Gensokyo was much darker back then. Friendly youkai and spellcard rules were nonexistent, humans distrusted each other, it was a dog-eat-dog world. Yet above all the violence and scum rose our beloved hero, who left an unforgettable mark on the history of Gensokyo. Of course, I am talking about...

...a machine made of steel, moving on its own free will. Taking the appearance of a bird. It had a spherically-shaped head, orange beak, magenta eyes, and black eyebrows. On the top of her head are three "tufts" of feathers. She has two talons from each of her orange feet.
And her name was...

...never really discovered. It's armor was so extraordinarily sturdy, that not even the mighty youkai could dent it. Magicians tried using the elements to destroy it, in order to guarantee their own survival, but have failed. Few humans managed to read "Ultra" written in one of the legs of said machine, so that's how they called their savior.
Soaring the skies, relentlessly tearing opponents down, Ultra was only fulfilling it's duty, until...

...something snapped. The humans below watched in terror as their so called savior danced in placed, struggling to find cohesion in its movements. Pained metallic groans washed over the whole of Gensokyo. Once elegantly soaring across the blue skies, Ultra had turned into a senile machine, erratically flying above the human village almost to the point of induced madness. The Youkai took notice of this...

...and attacked the village under the light of the night. The full moon shined at its peak, and the shadows powered the youkai. The villagers, that felt safe until now, were now running and screaming in terror as they saw the youkai wreak havoc. Such terror would only fuel the youkai, and with no care for any rules, all they could think of was to feast on the humans until they couldn't anymore.

The humans could see no end to that nightmare. The night felt endless, and with no machine to protect them, hope was dying. That was until...

...Ultra saw the villagers being slaughtered by the youkai. It wasted no time and immediately started it's youkai exermination. Youkai stood no chance against the swift and powerful machine to the point some even escaped in fear. Unfortunely when the assault was over, it was too already late. The whole village was on fire and lots of innocent people became victims of this terror. Such horrible day shall never be forgotten by any witness.

Ultra looked on the remaining survivors and...

...Lamented of being careless and neglecting its duty, it tried to ask the villagers for forgiveness. But it was too late, as the humans lost their homes, families and everything that they hold dear to their hearts; they didn't accept its plea of forgiveness and out of guilt, Ultra secluded itself in the creeks of the Youkai Mountain, taking a long slumber which took ages and ages ago.

After a long time has passed...

...the name of the hero Ultra has been forgotten by both the humans and youkais alike. However, Ultra has not been totally erased from history. On the tales of the many heroes of the olden days told in the Gensokyo Chronicles, there is a mention of a guardian metal beast without a name. Many readers dismissed it as mere fiction or a misidentified youkai, but not for our curious little adventurer for she believes there is more to this legend.

She wants to see it with her own two eyes and...

Wanted nothing more than to destroy it, break it into scrap and pull the bolts out, melt it down into a thick molten and mold it into a trophy. Throughout the entirety of this curious young girl's life, she has sought out the stories passed down through generations from certain village elders and information brokers about the failure of their great protector and how that villages overreliance on this faulty machine was the worst fate to befall them. The once beloved story of the hero named Ultra was maliciously warped into a warning for others, to never entrust the safety of their livelihood to one being. Collected hatred for this metallic beast was spread within the young minds of these village children like seeds, perhaps at a certain point in time, someone powerful made sure to manipulate Ultra's moment of weakness into something more sinister. Now our adventurer sets out to find this "Ultra"

Her foremost priority is to...

She had a tendency to do that, make strange sounds. Sometimes she'd even say a word or phrase without having first thought it, but more than anything she had the odd habit of making a clicking noise with her mouth. Click click. "Hiccups of the brain." Is what the healiers in her village called it. Although she was told it's not uncommon to be born with brain hiccups, considering she was the only one in her village with them, it was clearly a phenomenon none the less. One that garnered the attention of the healers from not just her village. Healers from all over would want to try their latest and greatest "invention" vile machines that did nothing to help, "innovations" that always proved that these Hiccups were "her own fault." Click click that "she didn't want to be cured."Click click. That was the true reason she sought this legendary bird, the symbol these new age healers had chosen as their emblem. She was going to find that heap of trash and show them all its true value. Nearly five months she had been traveling, following forgotten legends and vague hints, but today's she finally did it, she finally found proof...

...that this machine was more fragile than the legends made it out to be. While she had stopped to ask some fishermen on a bridge for directions, something reddish-brown floating down the river caught her eye, and she cut her conversation short to run after it. After swimming through the icy cold waters she managed to intercept the strange object, and held it aloft to view it while treading water: it was an enormous steel feather completely covered in rust. Her course of action was now clear, she...

...was to study it immediately. She didn't know what she was looking for anymore, but she needed to satiate her growing desire of validation; to finally prove that they were wrong, to bring incompetence to justice, or simply just to not be "that weird kid in the village who hiccups a lot". Whatever her reason was, I am unbothered to recount. She swam back across the river, and walked the path to her home under the afternoon sun, which would've fried her brains had there been any left.

After returning to her hometown, rusted metal feather in hand...

...where she was seen by Nareko Michigami.
Meanwhile at Chireiden, Koishi was getting ready to leave in order to catch a big fish. However, she forgot her fishing rod.
As Nareko saw the girl, she blocked her, encasing her feat in stone. The girl was shocked, and replied to the sudden aggrovation with...
