Assistance required for a newbie in MIDI composition

Made more sense to put Tetsuo instead of Kaneda.
I've recently had an interest in MIDI sequencing/composition for an upcoming project of mine. It's a really big one but, something I want to happen and I'm willing to spend as much time as needed to at least make a solid proof of concept.

For that, I am learning MIDI composition. I am a complete, utter beginner. The only instrument in life I touched is a soprano flute, and I haven't touched that thing since 6th grade (or since I was last 12, if your prefer.) I began first to understand how drums work and I am also looking through YouTube to find tutorials for normal and MIDI music theory alike.

However, what I lack is the understanding and guidance. Well good and all I have MIDI samples ripped through ZUN's games using the Touhou Toolkit (thtk) for examples; I don't know what to do with them. Melody, beatline, bassline and so on; I don't understand how to compose and practice yet. I'm basically putting notes here and there and hoping for the best. That's why I'm making a thread here first.

Understand this: I have no funds, and the job market is dryer than a granny's coochie for students like I, where I live. I'm limited on that aspect, so the best I have for let's say a MIDI keyboard... is the 105-or-so-key keyboard I'm currently typing on. Not bad, but not optimal.
