Are the games supposed to be this hard or am I bad?

I don't have much prior bullet hell experience other than playing Just Shapes and Beats and that one minigame from Super Mario 64 DS where you play as a bob-omb and dodge fire, but the Touhou games are pretty hard for me. The first game I played was EoSD and it took me about 10 attempts to beat Remilia on normal with all 3 continues, down to the last life. Granted, I didn't know that you could slow down your movement when I beat it but it still feels like a lot of tries. I'm currently playing through Touhou 8 and again, even with a more experience I am struggling hard to complete a 1cc on NORMAL. I know these kinds of games have learning curves but is this a skill issue or are the games really this difficult?

they are quite difficult indeed, but some practice should make them doable.
For example, past myself used to struggle with MoF stage 4, but now i view it as an easy stage that also allows to reach 150 million in Homing-Reimu 1cc run, getting me to max score-based lives without any effort
Really just the whole SHMUP genre thing with that weird difficulty curve that becomes one of main reasons why this genre is not that popular

Touhou's well known for its difficulty, but as they say practice makes you perfect. Tbh I only ever finished most games (i.e. EoSD, PCB, IN and WBaWC) on normal and just like you, had to use all 3 continues to even get to the final boss. But gotta say tho it's fun if you're up for the challenge.

I also want to tag this on; is playing with a controller better than keyboard? I know a stick would be better than 8 way movement but I like the feel of keyboard better so I don't know if I should switch

eh, personal preference really. I feel good at playing with mouse rather than laptop arrow keys

the movement in touhou is 8-way digital rather than actually analogue, so a stick isn't going to offer any more precise control than a d-pad or keyboard. it all comes down to what's easiest for you personally to use. I only really find d-pad playable; one of my friends used to use analogue stick and then later changed to d-pad and another friend only uses keyboard

and yeah, these games are supposed to be hard if you're not coming in as an arcade shmup fan. a suggestion I have for all newer players to seriously consider is try playing on easy mode. I know that in most games easy mode can lessen fun by removing challenge, but with touhou it's often still challenging in and of itself, especially if you're not used to games like this yet, and the difficultly names are tuned for experienced players (most of the later games say this outright, with normal saying it's "for people used to these kinds of games" or something along those lines). honestly, even though I've been playing for years and have a few games I only play on hard/lunatic anymore, there's still a couple games I'll preferentially play on easy because there's still just enough challenge to keep me focused

(I know eosd doesn't let you get to stage 6 on easy.... but there's still 12 other standard-style windows touhou games)

edit: I forgot to say, seconding that 'practice makes perfect' here. if you're enjoying the games, you'll get better at them. when I started I didn't think I'd ever get to the point I'd ever want to regularly play normal or to even touch hard mode in any of them, but I had a good time with them long enough that eventually it just seemed natural

my experience is touhou supposed to be that hard, so when i try eosd i noticed at first stage it kinda too easy and i'm realized the pattern which even exist for non official games take azure reflections for example, the first stage was very easy and then after that everything went hard all sudden
actually it's not bad idea and let just say stage 1 is just for warm-up if you manage to survive it without getting hit or using any bomb
so i can say it just trial and error, you fail once either you continue or stop and take a simple rest so your mind won't panic if you try again

Okay how? Is it easier than the mouse?
easier time restreaming and macrododging really, as well as more room for aggressive playstyle due to advanced movement
as a downside though, shaky hands can make micrododging harder, one wrong move and that's a hit, and input lag on wireless mouse has need to be taken into account when deathbombing, making those 8 frames of deathbomb window seem like IN regular deathbomb (not last word) window
