I'm starting to get a little obsessed with Bloodborne after I started brainstorming ideas for a custom figure and accidentally stumbled upon an idea for a 'what if' in the process.
The idea is if it was possible for the denizens of Gensokyo to suffer a plague similar to the beastly scourge.
For those who don't know, this contagious plague was spread among those who were given blood transfusions of tainted eldritch blood.
I can easily imagine this scenario happening where humans were given corrupted or supernatural blood and becoming youkai. Since such manifestations can spread and corrupt others, this youkai or oni plague could easily engulf large swaths of Gensokyo.
Even worse is that since youkai are manifestations of negative emotions, the resulting justifiable anger or desire for revenge would drive others into becoming youkai themselves.
Would there be a cure to the plague?
Yes, actually. Unlike the beastly scourge, the Gensokyo plague is curable if the sources of spiritual taint were cleansed and the offending youkai was eradicated.
That being said, that would mean that the afflicted humans could become the worst of the youkai the closer they were to the source or depending on the dose of the blood transfusion.
What type of youkai would be the culprit?
The first kind would be a youkai associated with disease. One that would be proficient in diseases that affect blood or medical malpractice associated with transfusions.
The second would be a shinigami seeking to cause death in a unique and unprecedented scale.
The last type would be a tenkajin, a blood sucking will-o'-the-wisp that would no doubt have an arsenal of blood born diseases to choose from.
As for what type of youkai the humans would transform into, I imagine it would depend on their worst characteristics as opposed to the fierce mostly wolf-like appearances that represent the hypocrisies of mankind as a whole.
Not even the beasts of Cainhurst had that much variety.
I think that's all from me for now. I hope this was entertaining for you to read.
