I had a bit of an epiphany recently and realized that it might be possible that Touhou and E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy could coexist.
Both games are similar despite having opposite inspirations and in different genres.
Allow me to elaborate. The settings in both games take place in universes that are deadly, have religious undertones and involve combating the corporeal and the supernatural.
The only difference is that instead of youkai, it's demons that enter through tears in reality and instead of danmaku, it's firearms in conjunction with magic.
For those who don't know, the central focus of E.Y.E is a secret society that fight threats in both the physical and the spiritual plane.
The overall goal of this organization is to essentially keep the galaxy in check. It's a bit of a stretch to compare these to incidents, I know, but given how many times Gensokyo has been in literal danger, I felt like this point made a good foundation to start with.
Next, I'd like to highlight the religious undertones. E.Y.E was partially inspired by a number of obscure religions (that I genuinely don't remember the names of) that are hinted at subtly throughout the game. These beliefs are somewhat like the religions we see in Touhou, albeit different in some aspects.
Given that some incidents we see in Touhou are religious disagreements and the fact that some events in the character backstories happen because of religious strife,
it would only be natural for there to be conflict with the E.Y.E sect based on theology alone.
Now for the comparisons between youkai and the reality tearing demons.
As we all know, some types of youkai are the result of negative emotions or the suffering someone caused. The same applies to E.Y.E's demons.
They are the result of negative emotions and the acts perpetrated by the player in their backstory.
The most telling example is a type of demon that takes the form of the player character's wife, who he executed for the sake of a cover up.
Perhaps the best similarity is how open ended both games are.
We all know how open Touhou is to interpretation sometimes. What answers we don't get we theorize and fill the blanks ourselves.
E.Y.E is similar in this aspect as well. Unless you went out of your way to find the important plot points, you would notice gaps in the plot at best and be confused at worst.
Given the nature of the setting, who can stop you from making your own theories and build upon it?
Why do I mention all these similarities? To start with, the reality warping phenomenon of E.Y.E isn't set in one place. It occurs across the universe.
Due the spiritual nature of Gensokyo, tears in reality would be rare, but not impossible. They could easily hide in places of great suffering and death, competing with the most vile of youkai for victims.
The E.Y.E sect's starships could warp to the moon or into Gensokyo itself, bypassing the barrier.
If E.Y.E tried to stake a claim on the moon, the Lunarians would see this as an invasion and a war would ensue.
Given that E.Y.E is currently embroiled in a civil war, it would be a three way conflict.
If E.Y.E tried to establish a foothold in Gensokyo, then they would have to find a place to establish a base in secret.
When contact inevitably occurs, both peoples would be tense around each other until the denizens of Gensokyo proved themselves useful to E.Y.E.
E.Y.E isn't above working with others as long as there's a common goal, although I imagine there would be some butting of heads about religious practices at some point.
Anyway, that's my little "what if" for tonight. I hope this was at least an entertaining read for you.
