does anybody else have issues with TH19 crashing?

so, i've sorta always had issues with 19. thcrap would still run the old version when my steam one was updated, it would freeze sometimes (which is also an issue with FW actually but thats not the point), if you played on the 640 x 480 resolution the sprites would look weird (which again is also an issue with 20), and i figured out how to get thcrap to run the updated game, but now i have a new problem. whenever i select a character to start a run, it freezes and i have to rapidly click the exe file until the "th19.exe has stopped responding" message pops up and i can close it. i found a reddit post with someone that has pretty much the exact same issue as me but no one ever responded to that so now im asking here to see if anyone knows a fix.

oh, and by the way it doesnt have anything to do with thcrap shenanigans cause not even the steam version works

I've had the game crash on me before when loading matches with certain characters.
I haven't had any problems like what you described though.
I've had problems starting up PoFV and PCB before, but that's about it.
The resolution problem I have also had before, but only with FW.

yeah before it would sometimes freeze when loading things and i would end up restarting my computer which is why i wouldnt play it much but this seems to be a more consistent thing. that reddit post says that its not consistent for them but each time i tried it froze so idk. im not entirely sure if this is my fault or not cause a while ago i did something stupid which may or may not have fucked up a couple of my touhou games on steam (they still work fine on thcrap oddly enough so im a little scared to do anything about it) but i've kinda always had issues with 19 since the demo. im not sure if it has anything to do with patching it with thcrap before the patch was finished and the weird update issue but unless the person somehow was in the same situation as me then i think its more likely than not for it to not be my fault.

Back up your save data somewhere, then delate it from 'C:\Users\[YourUserNameHere]\AppData\Roaming\ShanghaiAlice'. It's the 'th19' folder. Now try running the game, should make fresh files.

To make sure I understood correctly - both the Moriya version you download from here and the steam version have this bug?

i havent tried downloading from here yet. the issue is with my thcrap patched version and the steam version. i will try that method when i get home though!

good news. even though your method didn't work unfortunately, i tried changing the resolution from borderless window dot by dot to maximized (as well as windowed mode) and it seems to work okay. so i guess i will be playing on that from now on. ironic how the resolution thats supposed to be the "recommended" one gives me the most problems.

Oh! I would have never guessed that to be the issue and solution. Funny indeed, because borderless window dot by dot just gives me a backscreen.

yeah, seems like touhou 19 and 20 specifically cause the most crashing problems for me. not sure why because almost every other game runs near perfectly.
