I'd really love to see the Sangetsusei and Lotus Eaters mangas officially translated into English. Those manga are just so good. I'd also love to see the Bougetsushou series of mangas officially translated too.

Touhou 15.5 also has an official translation as far as I know, but it's so bad I genuinely prefer fan-made

Really depends on whether a translating/publishing company would pick them up or not. Could be possible if Touhou gets more popular in the West and there's profit to be made from English translations, though I imagine that scenario would be both a blessing and a curse depending on how niche you like the series to be.

IMO if one desperately wants the game to be in English, he'll find a way to translate it. Therefore official translations can only confirm the correct writing of characters' names (such as Flandre Scarlet, which was officially written for the first time in SFW), nothing special.

I'd argue a big part of this is the games being so inaccessible to a western audience (relative to other games). It isn't surprising that more people get into the setting without being into the games when whatever random animation or song on Youtube is just infinitely easier to stumble upon than any game. With stuff like an official Touhou 6 remake with an English translation released on PC and consoles, you might actually see a couple western folk where a game is their first real exposure to Touhou.
What I guess I'm trying to say is, if we are aiming for more game fans, you shouldn't be trying to get Touhou music and animation and comic fans into the games, but you should be aiming to get Shmup game fans into Touhou. More accessible releases can do this.
Though, I'm sure a more accessible release will attract many of those non-game fans to try it, or at least to buy it.

All touhou games since th10 are on Steam. The problem (or the blessing) with Touhou is the fact that, despite almost zero fan service by Zun, the absolute majority just "likes the girls" or even one exact girl (her design in fact) and doesn't care about the rest. That doesn't count as a fan(atic) at all. You won't be called a LoTR fan just for watching the movies and liking the cast, right? There are very few touhou "fanatics".
They just don't care about this gameplay, and story, and so on, and that's understandable because they just aren't interested in touhou. Of course the upcoming th06 remake is going to attract extra people, but the overall situation will probably never change.

I guess I could be considered a Touhou "fanatic" then. I love the vast majority of the music and characters (along with stories), I'm interested in Touhou's lore, and despite me largely sucking at them, I find a lot of interest in the games themselves.

As far as I know of, there are a certain percentage of shmup fans who don't get into Touhou because of how the Touhou games have actual story to them. Though this could also be news from an earlier point in time.

You gotta remember how computer illiterate most people are, searching for the Touhou games where they don't even pop up in search results might be enough of a problem and that's without talking about patching them or playing old games that didn't even release on Steam and you can't forget about the hell that PC98 emulation is

PC98 isn't really that hellish even if you install emulators by yourself, also I recommend "the touhou98 experience" pack published on this site which makes the whole thing even easier.
That too, but IMO the actual thing is: if the game features girls with cute and/or sexy designs, most people won't even think about playing it even if the game is easily obtainable. That works almost always, I don't have to explain why

Yeah you're completely right that most people will still not touch the series but I'm just saying how it definitely has the potential to increase that crowd, plus it's finally coming out on consoles so that might play a role too

Of course more people will play the actual games. BUT even more "tourists" (I'm not a fan of this word, but I have no idea what to use instead) will be attracted. Why? It's EoSD, the favourite and most known among their kind. The comeback of the legendary first widnows game shall start a new wave of fan art featuring EoSD characters, there will be more mentions of Touhou overall and specifically EoSD.

Maybe for a moment, but it isn't as if the release is really going to have much new content to serve as fuel for such a wave. I fully believe that you'll see this wave of art that you mention just out of relevance but I don't know if it's really going to be from new people.
I just gotta say that for folks looking to expand the fanbase that is interested in the games specifically this move of doing remakes really is the best bet of bringing fans into them. I guess I get the doomer perspective but really I think that this is a time to be much more hopeful about having an injection of fans interested in the gameplay than it is to lament the growth of a segment of the fanbase that will be growing anyways.

Doomer? No. I just think that if one isn't interested in curtain fire games, he won't play touhou anyway. Of course a remake is good, including the fact many people are afraid of piracy and just cannot play touhou 6-7-8.
