Shot Types You Love to Hate

YuyuFumo

Silly Ghost Princess
With 19 mainline games worth of shot types, there's bound to be some that are less than ideal to use. Some of them have glaring weaknesses holding them back, mechanics that are too gimmicky to effectively to use, or are simply outclassed by other shots that are straight upgrades. Let us know which shot types you find to be the worst of the worst, or those you simply cannot stand for one reason or another.

Out of the games I've played, MoF's Marisa A easily takes the cake for my personal least favorite shot type. The idea of controlling your shot formation sounds very cool on paper but its underwhelming damage (despite being called a 'high-power' shot type) and MoF's tanky enemies really prevents it from being able to do so. The best way to play Marisa A, ironically enough, is with all the turrets behind you; Even so, it's very easy to lose said formation when you have to macrododge incoming attacks. Also doesn't help that Marisa's 'thiccbox' (a 7x7 pixel hitbox that makes getting clipped by bullets very easy) was introduced in this game, which makes spellcards like Kanako's 'God's Rice Porridge' a nightmare to dodge. It took me quite some time to get a normal 1cc with her, and I don't look forward to doing my eventual hard 1cc either.

MoF MarisaA is what happens when you refuse to give vic viper lasers.

Youmu-Yuyuko has to be my favorite shot type in entirety of Touhou really. Youmu's shot is good for single targets and farming time, alongside decent bomb, and Yuyuko's shot is pretty much your usual danmaku shot that covers entire screen, allowing to sit in middle most time. If you're below 3 bombs, you also get an additional bomb. How convenient! Actually done a lunatic 1cc with this team, by the way.

It's actually insane how much damage Yuyu's spread shot does in that game, you literally have to stop shooting if you want familiar time orbs because you'll kill the summoners before they're able to call them. Outside of requiring practice, there's no downsides to using Myon and SpookyHime.

I've recently had the displeasure of playing through SA with Marisa C and I now see why others consider it to be one of the worst shots in the entire series. Despite the shot doing okay damage when everything connects, there's a weird delay on the missiles that make them very likely to miss enemies unless they're standing perfectly still (an example of this principle can be seen on Orin's 'Cat's Walk' spell card). This leads to the overall damage of the shot feeling pretty crappy, and it also doesn't help that the narrow shot cone makes stages a displeasure to fight through in turn. The bomb, oddly enough, picks up the mantle of PCB's supernatural border by acting as a shield that can refund power if not broken. While good on paper, it's utility is limited by a lack of meaningful damage upon breaking and further neutering of this shot type's already shaky missile power. There is a weird technique that allows you to get two shields by death bombing (theoretically bringing the cost of bombing from 1.0 power to 0.5), but I hardly find it consist enough to make up for everything else.

Oh, and Marisa's dumpy of a hitbox that's three times the size of Reimu's got ported over from MoF. Hope you have fun getting clipped by bullets you swore you dodged.
