In the ethereal world of Gensokyo, Ran Yakumo stands out as a loyal and dependable kitsune, distinguished by her signature white outfit, twin-eared cap, and the nine tails that mark her as a powerful fox youkai. As the shikigami of Yukari Yakumo — who is herself the partner of the legendary shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei — Ran occupies the unique and often humorous position of being a "spinning youkai of destruction". Despite her fearsome title as the "Scheming Nine-Tailed Fox," she is widely beloved for her caring demeanor and helpful nature, often possessing the love and understanding of a human mother. Her power is deeply tied to the sleeping status of her master; while she can use formidable kitsune magic and spin with frenzied, tornado-like speed, her abilities are significantly dampened when she is caring for Yukari as she hibernates. Perhaps her most famous quirk is her absolute vulnerability to fried tofu, which instantly dispels her logical reasoning and reverts her to a more "playful" and childlike state. When she isn't acting as a loyal (if occasionally defiant) servant to the Yakumo household, Ran can be found in the schoolhouse of the human village, where she fruitfully attempts to calculate the width of nearby rivers that are almost entirely unaffected by this information.
