Lunarian Question

There's no secret that some of the people at the community has a negative reaction towards lunarians, the moon and anything that relates to.
Why do you think it's the case?
 
Lunarians have been continually shown as antagonists, including in IN, Bougetsushou, LoLK and recently in Touhou 20.
Also, I believe many are just doing that for a joke. I just cannot imagine hating the whole moon.
 
It is a pretty easy villain to use, and you can't lie all of the Lunarians are pretty cool. So much so the Reisen is often a playable character. Also usually moon/ space themes are really pretty, just look at Touhou Fantasy Festival Part III. It so pretty.
 
Generally, (And this is from my personal takes) they are just really up themselves. They act all royal and snobbish and are just dicks. Not to mention sometimes they feel overpowered for the sake of being overpowered (See: Yorohime in Silent Sinners in Blue). The lunarians are just easily hateable because of how "holier than thou" they act compared to everyone else, maybe that's why.
 
That title is scarily similar to a historic question regarding a specific group of people, which was a very popular topic in the 1930s and '40s.

Then again, they never had bunny ears, or were isolated from the rest of the world, or had superpowers... wait.

I would refute some of those claims, however, I fear for my account.

i think the main reason is because of how they think they are superior to others and because they use moon rabbits as slaves.

it's ironic because I've heard the lunarian haters explain their hatred of lunarians by comparing them to the opposite team from that group from 1930s-40s
 
It is quite clear that this is related to Koishi Komeiji’s Heart-throbbing Adventure. I do not deny the historical significance of that fan works, but it has indeed created certain stereotypes about the Lunarians for people who are newly exposed to Touhou. The result is that Lunarians have essentially become the “default villains” in many fanworks. In any case, I believe it deserves a critical re-examination from the community.


However, according to the official setting, the Lunarians are not particularly friendly either, and they do hold a prejudice against Earth. They consider themselves superior and regard Earth as “污垢” — I apologize for using Chinese here, but I find it difficult to identify a precise English equivalent for the term.


At the same time, I strongly oppose injecting real-world politics into Touhou. Some people claim that the Lunarians are meant to represent China, and I protest this interpretation in the strongest terms.

I think at the time when KKHTA was at it's prime, some people at the community already had a mentality where they prefer fanon content over canon ones as "factual", due to the games' vagueness nature (despite some of the stuff already showcased, like Alice and Marisa's relationship lol), or mostly played by the fact that for some, they didn't tried the games or at least check a wiki page about it. (whetever or not you believe that touhoufans never actually played the games is up to you).

Yeah, basically in lore, there's a reason for that, it has to do with their beliefs. The moon is pure central. By living on the moon, you never age, never get sick and live longer. A place where no life nor death take its toll. And by some earthling steps upon, it muddies their "sanctuary", which is why they freak out over fairies, since their the embodiment of life itself.

Same, Touhou has it's own share of politics I'm not lying myself, but injecting irl politics into it is cringe. Especially when I heard from someone comparing hell to USA lol
