BlackSouls Touhou fangame idea

Hi there. About six months ago, I came up with the idea of creating a Black Souls-inspired fangame and then I started throwing out some concepts, but I was thwarted by the lack of my own skills and interested people around me who could work on pure enthusiasm. So recently I remembered this idea and decided to turn to you in search of talented people who could work for "thank you bro" and food.
There is need in composers, programmers, mappers, artists who can maybe work in BS artstyle (I just like how it looks, it's so dirty and stuff, very atmospheric), maybe writers (but i can handle the writing, i have a little experience and I study a lot about writing).

So there is little plot concept:
Gensokyo, New Year's Eve. Reimu and Marisa just finished preparing for the last festival of the year during the day, stopping by the human village to gather food. That evening, Yukari drops by the festivities and, congratulating Reimu on the festival, hints that something very exciting is about to happen. Then a strong, frosty wind blows, and Reimu wakes up. Unaware of the difference, the priestess goes about her daily business until Marisa visits her and asks how the New Year's preparations are going. Suspecting something is wrong, Reimu looks at the calendar and notices that the date is December 31st. Believing this to be just another incident, the heroine decides to investigate and punish the culprit for taking away precious memories of a happy New Year's holiday. It turns out that the cycle was created due to certain events unfolding in the outside world, leading to catastrophic consequences for Gensokyo. Specifically, for some reason, the Hakurei barrier cracked, and on the night of December 31st to January 1st, the concept of emptiness began to penetrate Gensokyo, absorbing everything around it and threatening to erase Gensokyo altogether.

And there are HUGE spoilers ahead, I don't want to reveal all the cards at once (although it would be worth it to get people interested). We can talk about it later, but the plot may be seem poorly written. And it is at this stage of writing.

Now about general concept:
Overall, the gameplay will be similar to the Black Souls series. You can increase your relationship with certain characters using currency, and summon others during battles. Different builds are welcome.
There will be bonfires (of course!) in the form of memory points, and if Reimu loses, she will return to these, keeping all her accumulated progress.
There needs to be multiple endings, one of which will be as false as possible, while the others will gradually shed light on what is happening around.

To achieve the best ending, the player will have to run around the entire game world and improve relationships with characters, collecting their fragments of memories, presented in the form of books, and transferring them to the shelves in a special section of the library, from where Patchouli could then transform the conceptual into the spiritual and transmit it to all the inhabitants of Gensokyo, resolving the incident.

The game will feature a currency called Spiritual Sparks, which can be spent on consumables, equipment, and leveling up relationships with characters. Each time the player restarts, they will lose all accumulated spiritual sparks, but Reimu's equipment and level (not other characters') will miraculously remain. The game will have a limited amount of equipment and spells for each character. However, the overall design of the party will depend on the choice of party members and equipment (this is questionable, as Reimu could go solo, but that would make equipment management not a bit easier).

We need to implement a systemic progression, like in Black Souls. The cycle itself starts in the morning and ends at night, so point progress will be tied to the time of day. The more you complete, the later the time. This will be reflected by the clock in Patchouli's library. As you progress, various subtle points of interest will appear within the locations, and fragments of character memories will appear and disappear.

Perhaps we should consider implementing the sanity system from BS2, but:
A) It's difficult to fit into Toho's lore and concept, and
B) It's blatant plagiarism.

Therefore, the game will be quite simplified to some extent. However, the gameplay will require some skill from the player, so that the game is not rushed and remains true to the spirit of Dark Souls. The Humanity mechanic will be a state of spiritual emptiness. When this happens, Reimu will lose a third of her stats, and her "Humanity" can be replenished with a Light Amulet.

That's all for now. I thought it would be really interesting and unusual to look at Touhou from this angle of dark fantasy with horror elements. If some Japanese guy could do this and create something new from something old, then how can we be any worse? Yes, I am writing here in all seriousness, assuming that people here know what Black Souls is or have at least heard of it. Can't be blamed I guess...

Also, forgive me if this is written in a jumbled or unclear manner. The reason is that I'm Russian, and I used a translator in places where my own knowledge and experience are lacking.

Can't wait for your suggestions and thoughts about this, guys!

The whole "humanity" talk is definitely reminiscent of the other souls series, Dark souls, and how having "humanity" grants you a health and general stat boost. My inclusion for the "worst" ending would have to be the cycle resetting under some circumstance and Reimu forgetting everything. Really though, I don't think Black souls is the most compatible with touhou, considering the large tonal differences and general content. Then again, this is coming from someone who has engaged in content if Gensokyo could survive the postal guy. I would gladly contribute more at request if wanted.

You can try posting this in the Black Souls community on Reddit.
As for the story, it's not that difficult knowing that Toro (creator of Black Souls) created this story based on some Touhou doujinshi he himself created.

i know not a lick of dark souls but this whole time loop shenanigans is pretty interesting. i still dont know what you meant by "emptiness" coming into gensokyo but maybe thats something we would have to later reveal in the story.
hoping to see what may come of this proposal

Rumia gets unsealed :marissmug:

Isn't the main point of the black souls games that its a dark fantasy where you have the possibility to do horrible things? Personally, I don't think touhou would work well in a dark fantasy setting, especially with how characters are in canon.

If you are willing to part with the dark fantasy aspect, at that point, you're talking about a general RPG maker game, which is great, and good luck if you decide to make it.

considering igoukyo and kkhta existences i think it can definetly fit

I'd still say that it's unfit for the most part.

I think touhou is dark despite it's overall lightheartedness. You have dark aspects to a generally fun and light hearted game, not the other way around.

The idea of gensoukyou is great for a dark fantasy imo, a land where technology has stopped, the people living in fear of the supernatural, the dark past of humanity and it's inhumane traditions and practices (for example the thai dead fetus magic stuff). If we take Fear and Hunger as an example, I'd say the setting would be much better than that games' setting, much more monsters and mythology could be used.

The only way it would work is if the game is set before the danmaku rule is established. So characters would get hurt, maybe even die. Characters would be more on edge and battles would definitely have weight to it. Perhaps the game could be a prequel to how the danmaku rule was influenced/made.

Next part is: who would want to play a game where your beloved comfort character is shredded to pieces due to an unfortune coin flip? I think most of us like the girls because they are funny or cute. I'd rather not see these characters in gore.

I'm totally fine with seeing characters i like getting butchered to smitherens honestly, makes me appreciate them making through it all even more.

i can imagine its possible to make gensokyo a dark and dreadful place befitting a dark fantasy setting, but it would have a really massive clash with the tone of the official games and what the community expects from a touhou game and a lot of creative liberties would have to be taken to establish a dark tone in a naturally whimsical setting.

but if it isnt supposed to contain very graphic moments or mechanics then it could just have a somber or lonely tone. maybe making the terrifying stuffs more psychological or social?

I would agree, but for some reason KKHTA exists, and for some reason KKHTA is popular, so... yeah. :Sanae:

The thing with Grotesque Land and KKHTA, is that they aren't supposed to take place in the official canon. They're have their own set of timelines and universe different from the official games. So if you want to make a Black Souls Touhou game, then go right ahead. But you shooting yourself in the foot if you try keep it "canon". Since yes, it has it's share of dark moments, even before PCB. But it's really not something which according to the community would call it "grim".

I agree, touhou's general tone is anything but dark. Perhaps a John Touhou lost in the woods-esque RPG maker game would be dope with those horror elements.

One idea came to mind, let's take a what if X never happened scenario. Make that X the danmaku ruleset, have Gensoukyou overtaken by powerful youkai, perhaps in an interregnum state where they constantly battle eachother to death. Have the protagonist somehow balance/take controll of the world as the main plot. Plenty of dark elements can be inserted and make it as grim as needed.

Touhou has relatively well established characters with all the mangas and the 20+ games, so if they act out of character, it's weird. Alt timeline idea would preserve the character's nature, but make them more wild due to survival insticts and danger being present.

Imo cannonicity is very important. If you try to differ from the cannon wildly, at that point, just make your own world and create your own characters. Why limit your creativity?

Alright. here's my general support:
The plot focuses around an odd mist that is spreading around Gensokyo that is causing people, youkai to become aggressive, empty husks, and causing faries to die off. Sakuya, Okina, and Yukari take notice first. This allows a small evacuation of some figures into Back Door Area, but not all are saved. Knowing this, Yukari gets Reimu and instructs her to just figure out what is going on. This sets the time loop for where as the day progresses, more and more husks appear and gensokyo gets more overrun by the mist. Some refuges can be found that you can add to your party, such as Marisa, Alice, Sanae, ect, with Reimu finding more and more details. If Reimu were to die or become "empty" then the day resets via Sakuya's time powers and Reimu remembers everything. Eventually this culminates in Reimu and her party scaling the youkai mountian, and finding out everything. Namely that the cause for everything was Seija, and that in her attempt to throw Gensokyo into chaos, she decided to unseal Rumia, thus unleashing "The Youkai of Nothingness" A battle ensues, with three endings possible depending on items gained in that run. If one goes in blind, this results in the bad ending. Reimu slays Rumia, but has to take her place as the youkai of darkness, resulting in Reimu herself becoming sealed and there being a lack of a shrine maiden for the Hakurei shrine, inevitably resulting in the collapse of Gensokyo. If Reimu goes in with special sealing equipment (most likely found by preforming set tasks around the shrine) then the normal ending happens. Reimu seals away Rumia, but Gensokyo has been ravaged. It will be tough rebuilding but it's a possibility to come back. The true (and good) ending happens if you get more vague items, likely an alternate Sakuya Watch from the Scarlet Devil Mansion and the special seals. During this ending after sealing away Rumia, Reimu is able to go back in time to when the incident started, and fight and defeat Seija and a newly unsealed Rumia. This will be a difficult battle though because only Reimu was able to go back in time, and would essentially have to solo a weakened Rumia and Seija. if Reimu would succeed, then she would have prevented the incident and essentially prevented ruin from coming to gensokyo, saving everyone.

Thought yall?

Hey guys, I just got back from work (the last few days have been pretty wild, it's been a real quest to get paid). Big thanks for your replies, that really excited me and stuff. Really appreciate it. Now it's time to reply everyone.

I guess there is need to clarify that I don't want to do something like KKHTA. No butchering, no gore, no pat-pats. I'm starting to thinking that I formulated incorrectly all stuff about dark fantasy as you guys started to think that it will be REAL dark fantasy. I will talk about it later.

Translator mistaken me, I guess. The "emptiness" here is some kind of "void" or "sunyata" in buddhism. I want it to be very curious, deep and important part of the game's scenario. Planning it as some kind of The Crawling One from Black Souls but not that saddistic.

Well, not at all, I think. Imo Black Souls is all about it's plot about endless cycle of suffering and trying to stop it at all costs. I don't want to make all setting dark fantasy, just bring some parts and themes from there to touhou. As I said earlier: no gore or something like that (man now I have incredible desire to tell you the whole story I made up).
I'd still say that it's unfit for the most part.

Btw idea about prequel is very interesting by itself, I'd love to read some fic or manga or play game about it. But you went somehow too far from what is in my head.

Now about it. This guy understood what I wanted to say in his last paragraph. Theme of loneliness is the main for Black Souls as I think. Player just walking around locations that are barely filled with anything. Not knowing where to go exactly on their first and maybe even second walkthrough. Trying to reach different endings by different ways. Fighting enemies. Exploring. Making builds. Watching obscure scenes. Trying to understand plot. And in Black Souls 2 loneliness is just a part of narrative and gameplay and it works great. The whole Black Souls talking is about atmosphere and core gameplay, not about content. If I could make the game about Reimu's loneliness and make player feel it, then, I think, the game will be at least 50% good. The other 50 is gameplay and plot.

I think i could make it "canonic" by using canonical powers of characters and without changing them. Byakuren will definitely not be maniac that keeps Kyoko in temple's basement. Sanae will definitely not going insane on her powers of making miracles. Utsuho definitely not going to blow up everything. Cirno definitely not going to be weaker than she already is. I'm not gonna go wild with it and making it all horrific. Just something happened in Gensokyo and Reimu has to care about it as always.
The only thing is that I made up new characters who do something. Think it's not hardcore canon breaking. I think they'll fit in well. But it's only my thoughts.

I could tell you more, if you guys are interested. And thanks again for your feedback and support. See ya!

I guess with all of this you could pull a silent hill and make it a mostly foggy area with everyone gone. Perhaps it starts with Reimu waiting for Marisa at the shrine for new year's fireworks, but Marisa doesn't come, and the fog washes over. The human village is there, but no one is in there, no one is inside the Scarlet Devil Mansion, no one in at the Moriya shrine, and so on. I guess we have to wait for your plot idea for us to put the gameplay flow together as it seems like you already have an idea for how the story will work.
Otherwise The "emptiness" mechanic could work similar to Bloodborn's insight mechanic, where the world gradually becomes more twisted and distorted as you gain insight, and you can interact with certain aspects of the world and certain enemies differently, but I guess in this game "emptiness" would make the world go more drab and monotone, reveal more unhinged dialogue options, and random events would happen more often. You could even possibly pull an eternal darkness: Sanity's requiem by having high "emptiness" deliberately mess with the player, such as by making it look like a fly was on the screen, or if you game over, the game would lie about your save being deleted. "emptiness" would accumulate slowly over time, but you could dispel it with items that recall past events, such as cherry crystals or time orbs. Another way could be via visiting familiar locations. I'm just pulling stuff off the top of my head, but let me know what you think when you can!

I agree, the whole silent hill stuff could work. Make Reimu have amnesia of some sort, have her run around gensoukyou trying to collect artefacts that are needed for remembering the events of the incident. You can have interactions with other characters, you can create custom ones as well. This way you have progression, you can have boss fights even.

Though imo if you're going that far, why not make it a standalone world instead of a fan game? Keep the archetypes and make em have different backgrounds.

Dang I totally forgot about silent hill, thank you for pulling it up! About the "emptiness mechanic": in Black Souls 2 there is a SEN mechanic that works exactly like insight from Bloodborne, it's changing the world and makes interaction with world different just as you said. I hope it's not that bad if I just snatch mechanics from other games to make something new for Touhou as there are small amount of RPGM games (I didn't see a lot even at itch but idk maybe I'm just blind for this).

About the fireworks episode. This could be some kind of dream or intro or creepy moment based on insight mechanic. And it should work good.

Making standalone verse is definitely harder and requires more work to be developed. And I just want it to be Touhou. That's my only wish and dream.
