i'm new and trying to get into touhou and was going to start with 6 or 7 but they run at like 14-18 fps
i can't tell if this is just because i'm running it on my laptop because some of the later games like 15 and 19 are running fine for me

To be a bit fair, Proton automatically has DXVK (most useful for dx8 games), and I think Linux has a better CPU scheduler even by default for bullethells.

But, to be a bit more real, there could be downsides as well as upsides. The locale emulation process could vary some between being more simple and less simple depending on your setup. And if your hardware is old, you also wouldn't be able to make use of DXVK (or a newer version of it), meaning you'd have to use OpenGL, which could be worse for performance than whatever your DirectX supported version is. And then there are other caveats (but also upsides) that there could be depending on your hardware and use-cases. But at least on the AMD side, things tend to be really good.

To be entirely honest I care more about the freedom and privacy Gnu/Linux offers, and the easy/convenience of use Unix offers rather then the performance.

I had to do some finagling to get th6 to work. Look up v-patch, I don't exactly remember the step by step because I did this years ago but looking that up would be a good start.

At least with my setup, I've had my fair share of issues at least with the older Touhou games. I had quite a bit of trouble getting th06 to run smoothly on my setup.

Works on my machine, I never had trouble running touhou on any setup weirdly enough. I think I'm not even using proton just plain wine
