What's your getting into Touhou story?

earliest memory of seeing something related to touhou is this one danTDM video XD i was 10 and thought flandres wings were so cool! but ive only started to really get into it recently after slowly realizing most of all the music i have liked over many years has been touhou... so i thought if i cant escape it, might as well join it! played my first game yesterday and i suck so bad, i love it!

I bought ten on steam today. Now I'm reading all of the lore and checking out all of the other stuff. Ofc I'd seen Touhou related stuff floating around the internet forever but never got into it until now.

When I first found out about touhou, I could only rely on wiki pages for lore since they didn't have translations when I started playing. I just stumbled upon a a collection of the games on another site. Had no idea what I was getting into and I still can't 1cc anything beyond normal but I stayed for the fanart and music remixes.

I first found Touhou accidentally around summer night 2021 when I watched a video from the countryballs fandom. It was a video called "Some random WW1 Battle in less than 30 seconds. by Kaliningrad General (who is also a Touhou artist)
Video link:
It has around the second or third time That I rewatched this video and realized that this video was a remake of a old touhou MMD video and it was linked in its description .
The video as well has the link to Suwako's theme Native Faith.

Native Faith was something so intricate and beautiful track. I have never experienced at that point in my life. As soon as i scrolled into the comment section I realized that I stumbled on a rabbit hole. I was never the same person ever since that day.....

this story will be quite odd lol. So it started when i was playing terraria on the fargos souls mod and I had finally beat the mutant boss and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I was listening to the mutants boss theme on YT and I saw comments refrencing touhou project. So I looked it up and saw some memes about touhou music and I started listening to the soundtracks, THEN I downloaded touhou 10 and started from there. I felt like a pussy starting with one of the easiest in the franchise so I started it on hard mode and beat it on hard mode. Starting on hardmode wasnt a learning curve it was a vertical learning cliff but I managed and now I can brag about beating a touhou on hard mode. Of course I had to try it on lunatic mode so I can say ive beat a touhou game on the hardest difficulty but I never did. This is how i got into touhou but my first exposure was probably bad apple

It is difficult to believe that this is how I realize Kaliningrad General (the YouTuber) was a Touhou fan.
Kaliningrad General (who is also a Touhou artist)

I made an introductory post when I first made an account. It was
'I started liking Touhou at least in 2023 or possibly early in 2024? Because I clicked on a video of Cirno's UNL theme and 9 Destiny - It's Always Cirno's Turn after I watched Teto Territory. Then I found out Travelling Days by Crazy Beats. I didn't really pay much attention at the time, so I don't know when this happened or over how long, but I ended up on the Touhou Fandom Wiki (which got raided) looking for 9 Destiny's lyrics.'. Though true, it misses some stuff behind it.

The first actual Touhou related thing that I have seen was probably either the thumbnail of Bad Apple!! (Not the actual video, at least I do not remember seeing it. I half expect myself to have thought 'what even is this black and white?') or from Geometry Dash. Years ago, when I watched many videos on GD, I found a level called 'Yatagarasu', but I didn't know it had a Touhou song in it then.

In the few months before I started getting into Touhou, I found some animations made by this Flipaclip user named Riri Zpt on YouTube. I saw the animation on Koishi and thought that it was pretty neat.

I don't remember much else about my early Touhou period at the moment.

Edit: When I typed 'It is difficult to believe that this is how I realize Kaliningrad General (the YouTuber) was a Touhou fan.', I meant that it was difficult for me specifically to believe.

I originally discovered Touhou Project back in 2020 after seeing art of the characters online. My younger self had a dumb crush on Yukari, and I tried getting into the mainline games through EoSD and IN. That said, I didn't really understand the series that much or why I couldn't get past Sakuya or Marisa in their respective games (spoiler alert: I was in high school and sucked at bullet hells). Ultimately, I became extremely frustrated with the games and dropped the series like a hot sack of rocks.

Fast forward to September of last year, I had seen a meme online regarding Yukari gambling child support money and suddenly grew interested in the series again. After doing some proper research on what exactly the series was and how to play a Touhou game, I redownloaded EoSD with the intent to do what I couldn't five years prior. It took some time and the help of the practice patch, but I eventually 1cc'd normal difficulty and, in the process, fell in love with both the games and the series as a whole.

It's kinda funny imagining myself nearly one year ago, practicing Patchouli's spell cards (damn you, Princess Undine...) during my lunch breaks in medical school. I Actually got the chance to visit Tokyo this earlier year and bought a physical copy of PCB in Akihabara, which kinda cements me as an official fan of ZUNs works. I honestly listen to the music collections more than I play the games, but I'm currently working to beat Yukari before turning to Mokou, MoF, and the rest of the mainline series. Suffice to say, I'm in it for the long haul now.

Sheeeeeeit dude, when I saw Flandre for the first time in that video, I thought she was a girl with small kite wings XD

During 2020, I got into Touhou after watching the Reimu VS Sakuya fight in Memories of Phantasm and listening to Night of (K)nights. Slowly, bit by bit I have become bonafide Touhou fan. Nowadays, I just play PC-98 era Touhou games. It would be even a miracle if I touched Touhou 8.

I think my story of getting into Touhou is really funny because I had no idea what it was at all. I would hear Touhou mentioned a lot on the internet, but it was a faceless name to me; I had no idea what it was or what the series even looked like. So when I finally looked up what Touhou is I got roped into it when learning about it lol. When I played EOSD for the first time I got hooked, and now Touhou is one of my favorite things ever!
