what type of controls do you use to play?

thumbstick?  d-pad?  arcade stick?

i'm using a PS2 controller and i think my use of the thumstick isn't the best choice, but when i try to play with d-pad it hurts my hand in my old age.  I have focus mapped to the L2 button, fire mapped to circle and bomb to x.

Keyboard. It's the base control for the machine the game is made for (I think, I never played bullet hells in arcades) and its the one I've been used to gaming for my whole life.

Though I did try playing with my homemade arcade stick that I use for fighting games and I gave up by the time I made it to Cirno in EoSD hard. The travel distance is unbearable for quickly going the opposite direction and streaming is a little hard since it feels like the lever resetting to neutral is way slower than that of keyboard keys.

I use keyboard. Even when my left arrow key broke, I used AutoHotKey to map the keys to the numpad instead. Been playing with this setup for the Touhou games, and it feels the same as using the arrow keys at this point.

I use default but thats because the games wont let me change the keybinds. I have gotten used to it though

keyboard. i cant stand using a controller. however, for fighting games like hisoutensoku, i do use a controller because sometimes the keys on my keyboard just dont work and you have to press them real hard for them to do something. using a controller for that just gives them time to start working again.

mouse.
i just dont have the hand-eye coordination to use even wasd, let alone arrow keys.
some people find it harder, but for me, i find it easier to make my character go exactly where i want to go, it also lets me have insane precision when dodging stuff, it almost feels like cheating.

keyboard, and I use keyboard for even hisoutensoku too because its easier to do 623's and 421's on the keyboard than with one of those thingies for me

it is cheating because you have to download it as a patch :Sanae:

Thats what I initially wanted to do, but I cant figure out how to change it to mouse movement. I have a razer Huntsman mini keyboard (i hate it but it works) and I just used razer synapse to make a profile specifically for touhou lol.

you can use thmousex for most (if not all? i dont remember) touhou games, im never getting past stage 3 of any touhou games using keyboard

i stop using controller few years ago due some of them either randomly break or not working so i'm mostly using keyboard and depend on the game too if that normal game like touhou i prefer using arrow despite there's numpad here which causing everything to be a bit difficult for the first time, and i'm using wasd if that was a fighting game which feel a little difficult from controller especially 360 input

I use a controller with d-pad for movement, right bumper for bombs, [left face button] for focus and [bottom face button] for firing. the d-pad + those two face buttons fit an easy control intuition burned into me in the late 80s thru nes games, with my thumbtip on the left and thumb knuckle on the bottom. and putting bomb on the bumper means I can fire one off instantly without having to move my right thumb at all (my fingers fit more naturally on bumpers than triggers, too). if a game requires another button, that goes to LB, and only after that do I start putting things on the top and right face buttons

I don't do well with keyboard on anything but turn-based games

Now mind you I haven't actually properly played Touhou in about 8 years outside of replaying a few stages of EoSD, PCB, MoF and PoFV, but I switch from arcade stick to PS5 pad depending on how I'm feeling. Arcade stick is cool because it feels like I'm playing DonPachi or something as well as button ergonomics, but I really like the way standard pad feels.
