I generally agree with your criticisms. Of course, no one can deny that the MLP fandom as it was got stunted by the actual end of Gen 4 and as such will never really get the lengthy cultural development that Touhou has. Remnants of the fanbase still exist here and there and I don't think it will...
I get what you mean about Star Wars. Now that I'm thinking about it, I think an additional spirit towards what I was talking about in the main post is almost about the fan base outsizing its original work. When I think of the breadth of creations withing Touhou and MLP it seems that they almost...
I like the average Akatsuki Records song more than I like the average Shinra-Bansho song, but man does Shinra-Bansho really just have some all-time greats. I'd really say that Shinra-Bansho has managed to achieve much greater heights than Akatuski has, but again there is a consistency to the...
One of the aspects of Touhou that most entrances me is its cultural impact. It's sprawling collection of fan works, the physical fan community forming around conventions and physical products, how it has rooted itself into the internet... many other media franchises have similarities with Touhou...
Agreed. At least for logged in users. I want the section that is changing and updating the most to be at the top because it is the most likely to have new stuff whenever I come to the site. Unless there is some algorithm determining what is on top that I'm ignorant of.
From a Team Fortress 2 version of Chirumiru, Bonkumiru.
I was and am really into TF2 and funnily enough I find the TF2 and Touhou communities similar in a lot of ways, which explains the vast amount of crossover in fan works (probably extends into Source and Touhou in general).
Then I chained...
https://touhou-memories.com/ is pretty cool. It's a blog which goes into the technical details and release histories of various Touhou games. Pretty interesting to browse through.
"Easy" achievements in Touhou are still well and above most games in general in difficulty when considering how long a run lasts, so I think that people should be proud of any accomplishment they make in these games. Good luck with the extra stage if you decide to challenge it. I found that...
Maybe for a moment, but it isn't as if the release is really going to have much new content to serve as fuel for such a wave. I fully believe that you'll see this wave of art that you mention just out of relevance but I don't know if it's really going to be from new people.
I just gotta say...
It's the community history. Utterly fascinating to me. Frustrating that so much of it is in Japanese, haha.
It's surprisingly like Team Fortress 2 for me. What sinks me so deep in that game is not just the extremely solid gameplay, but also the characters and the vast amount of fan generated...
I'd argue a big part of this is the games being so inaccessible to a western audience (relative to other games). It isn't surprising that more people get into the setting without being into the games when whatever random animation or song on Youtube is just infinitely easier to stumble upon than...
That one is great, personally I really like LuckE1's Kaguya animation, it's pretty brainrotted but for some reason I always have to watch it when it comes into my recommended.
I'm a sucker for quick bits.
Very excited to see such a classic enter the modern gaming environment. I really would not at all mind every Touhou game eventually getting some sort of representation on Steam. The real barrier to entry that needing to seek out downloads and use fan patches poses shouldn't be underestimated...
It certainly lowers my respect for him as a creator by a bit. Hardly enough to stop playing what he creates, though. I think it is an offense but a very very small one; understandable to be upset over when discussing on its own but not deserving of being a prominent part of how you view the series.
