can we talk about the game disc designs rq?

Buwako

True God of the Boriya Shrine
i wanna talk about the game disc designs on physical touhou copies.

it was only for a short amount of time yes, but i rlly liked how the older ones had a character on it. it kinda gave u a little sneak peak on what you will find in the game and i liked that. its too bad they dont really do that anymore. 17 and 18 get... half points, i guess? they have the sillouette, at least. but that doesnt really tell you anything because that sillouette was already on the box art. im glad the fighting games and demos still have characters on them though.

shoutout to MoF for having a really unique disc for it being a touhou game. it kinda reminds me of rennaissance paintings with how its semi realistic. i've never seen reimu depicted like that before. i wish i had the th10 physical copy...

also i just wanted to throw some shade at 19 for having the most boring design. its literally just a border. didnt even bother to color the background 😭

about DDC's design, its very similar to mountain of faith's. i just noticed this, but i think reimu and marisa are in it too,at the bottom left corner. its a little blurry so its really hard to see what exactly they are doing though.

this is a pretty niche topic, since many fans dont play the games, let alone own physical copies. with the touhou games releasing on places like steam now, there is less need for physical copies, especially since most modern computers dont have a disk drive built into them anymore. one of my favorite parts of having physical copies is looking on the backside of the case, and also looking at the discs because its fun and interesting to look at. i wanted to talk about it so it gets a little more attention :)

(also yes this was copied and pasted from my community post cuz i wanna talk about it on here too)

I've never even seen all of the Touhou game discs before. Well, I do tend to forget about them often, unfortunately.
Still though, I do wish that they didn't start taking away the ability to play discs, for well, really anything.
I've seen music discs, movie discs and console game discs for my entire life as a result of my family having dozens of them.
But, with computer game discs themselves, I'm not sure I've even seen very many of them (aside from the Myst game discs which Daddy has), though that's because Daddy never really payed attention to PC games.
Regardless, I'm someone who always finds it sad to see stuff from the past become lost.
Anyway, sorry for much of my reply being tangents. lol

Despite owning a good handful of the CDs, I've never actually seen the disc designs because I'm keeping them sealed, lol. Really a perfect summation of the series' somewhat recent drop in quality, usually it's the finer details that start to fade away before everything crumbles. Hoping that the Reprise team ZUN's working with eventually carries the torch for future games, as I don't think his old age is doing him any favors in solo development.

Are you from the US? Guys, where do you order discs from? What’s it like having a physical copy? In my country, it involves a huge markup, takes a long time, and is a real hassle. That Koishi disc is Touhou 13.5, right? Damn, it looks beautiful. What’s the situation like in your country regarding ordering discs from Japan?

As far as I know of, it can usually be pretty hard to order stuff sold exclusively in Japan and be able to ship it outside of there in really any country. You need to typically use specific websites.
That said, I don't remember what those websites are, and this could be outdated information as well.
Not to mention, I'm not an expert on shipping by any means.

Despite collectings cds myself I've never thought of looking up how the Touhou games' cds looked like.
1st generation Windows discs look about what I expected them to look like, but latter discs like Mountain of Faith's and Unconnected Marketeers look gorgeous. I'm a real sucker for pictures with a monochromatic filter, so personally I'd say the 2nd generation of Windows games got the best out of the of cds designs.

On a side note; the 1st generation cds reminded me of Whitesnake's disc ability lol, with the way characters are displayed on an empty background.

i've gotten all my discs from ebay. i think for 1 disc (doesnt really matter much on which) it was around 30-50 usd. it may have gone up a little since then due to tarriff issues in my country rn. as for owning a physical copy, its pretty cool. the backside of it shows picutres of gameplay, sometimes full sprites of reimu, and of course the disc. if u dont know what your doing, it can be really difficult to set up. there were some WACK ways i used to play touhou 8 and 7 because i didnt know what to do (also partly because im stupid and cant read directions that well)

We have a site for this too, but the process is complicated and slow. You find the disc you want on a Japanese marketplace, send the link to the site, and pay them, then they buy the disc in Japan, get it to their warehouse, and arrange for a carrier... I can't buy anything from Japan directly in my country, and no one else sells it here, since Touhou releases are extremely rare in this region.
What discs do you have in your collection?

oh jeez, that does sound like a hassle. i have 6, 7, 8, 10.5, 12.3, 12.8, 13.5, and 14.5

Do you like the Touhou fighting games? I've really grown to love AoCF (15.5) lately. Do you know how to play it online?

yeah i do. my favorite one is aocf too lol. i have it on the switch so playing online would be pretty straightforward. i havent renewed my online membership though so i cant play online. as for on pc.. if you get it on steam im sure its simple enough but if you have a physical disc i think you need to need to find communities like discord that will play online. as least for soku. not sure how it is with the later games

Speaking of AoCF... don't you think you can play as Marisa just by mashing the keyboard? She's probably way too unbalanced and overpowered.

maybe. i'd say someone like ichirin is the most mashable character to play as. i mostly play as koishi though so im not sure
In my experience, some of the most powerful characters in that game (not just "mashable"), would be of course with Ichirin and Koishi, but also with Yukari, Kokoro, and Byakuren (as long as you're able to control her good enough).
Koishi though is practically a beast, as she's able to take down most opponents pretty quickly despite her being slow.
Regardless, I find Yukari to maybe be the versatile of the characters. As long as you pair her with another powerful character, the fights can get one-sided pretty quickly.

mm.. with koishi u kinda gotta know what youre doing for her to be real good. i'd say shes more of one of those characters where u can just spam one move a bunch of times and win (the rose eater thing) but the big reason i love playing as her is her dash. a lot of people seem to think its slow, but its really helpful as she appears right behind her opponent and u can do a melee combo with it. its great

Those are the main reason I feel her gameplay to be practically a beast. Her attacks, while few, can do a lot of damage, and similar to one of Yukari's attacks, her dash can get you behind your opponent, so while it is slow, it's pretty effective.
Though, as you said, you definitely have to know what you're doing with her.
I had trouble playing as Koishi for a while until I figured out her moveset, but even now, she can be unpredictable to play for me.
