least favorite game mechanics?

Buwako

True God of the Boriya Shrine
most touhou games will have different mechanics that affect the gameplay (cherry point thing from PCB, the UFOs...).

sometimes they can make the gameplay more engaging, other times it just makes it worse.

this can also involve ways that you get lives and bombs. in the older games, ways you would get them was through score and droppings from bosses. in newer games, its usually life and bomb pieces. the ways you get them can be unique. in UFO, its through the UFOs. in TD, its from the spirits. these also make it more fun, or harder, depending on your view. is there any mechanics that you despise and hope never make another appearance in a touhou game again?

(if th13's life system wasnt so ASS, i could've easily 1cced it by now, but its so hard to get lives!)

I personally dislike Touhou 17's beast token/hyper system. Visual clutter was at its worst in this game. Plus the hyper system just made the game's survival and scoring too boring imo. And the stages being bland and boring don't help too.

I equally like pretty much every mechanic I have experienced, and I've played all the non-FTGs from Koumakyou to Kouryuudou

I do think it's worth to say that I dislike the many bugs with ability cards in Kouryuudou, but it's an issue with the implementation, not the concept

Well, I can't say that I dislike the mechanic, but is true that it makes things more boring and easy. If you use them the game becomes a joke (except in lunatic, and hard with keiki), and if you don't then the game is brutal (and more annoying than UFO somehow). But is true that game was much more dull and simple than other games in terms of danmaku beauty.
Sadly it feels like one of the weakest from the 3rd windows era. Which it's a shame, because the story, symbolism, mythology and characters are awesome (the music good as always too).

Seriously? I haven't noticed anything weird with it.

To me it would be between DDC or HSiFS. More than nothing because those games forces you to do certain things that can put you very in risk, especially HSiFS, which is more annoying because is absurdly hard to get resources without abusing the seasonal burst, which is why I am always cooked by Aunn who's absurdly harder than Narumi (the next boss lolololol), of course in playtroughts that I DO that challenge, because the game is very annoying without the use of these seasonal powers of sort.
Meanwhile, DDC, while it gives you more rewards, it also can punish you VERY bad sometimes. Which is something that HSiFS also suffers but "slightly" less. So these two games forces you to be careful which is something that like UFO may share but the difference is that you DON'T need to always go upward of the screen all the time. Which it makes it easier to deal with it if you are precarious enough and don't let you get in a frenzy for focusing more in collecting UFOs than dodging.
Also it doesn't helps that DDC is harder overall (Kagerou is bs luck, the Tsukogamis are just cruel, Seija is a cheater and Shinmyoumaru will give you the greater PTSd of your life).

yes, there are numerous desync issues with them, which really demotivated me to play around with the cards

interesting, Aunn's non-spells just require some quick taps and her spells are all learning and barely reliant on gorilla. HSiFS is unique in the series in that it's almost a different game when you don't use its optional mechanic, since projectile deletion this frequent completely changes routes like a winter and summer scoring and survival difference

For the moment, I'd have to say that some of the spell cards in Impossible Spell Card are the worst mechanics.
Yes, I know that they're basically a puzzle you can't brute force your way through and that you're supposed to use your items wisely until you gain more uses for them, but holy cow, some of them are just out of left field!
It boils down to luck and hoping you can use your items enough to push through.

Aunn danmaku is just evil. Her nons uses a lot of your mental energy by dodging every small gap that are you given chance for, and her only easy spell is the first one, while the other twos are just unfair. Seriously, even if I do survive somehow Koma-inu spin, A-Um breathing always destroys me. Is basically shinki attack from Mystic Square but worse because you aren't given space and the attack fucking never ends before you die.
So I'm not sure how at least that last one isn't like a gorilla jumping me.
Aunn is just terrifying.

Edit: Nevermind, i have mastered much more her nons and koma inu is quite easy but a bit treacherous sometimes. Though, A-Um breathing is still devilish.

Seriously? I actually like a lot ISC mechanics and I dare to say that isn't very hard as a game with only one or two spells being the exception for each day since day 5. The only day that I actually think that is insane and that it can compares to Double Spoiler (definitely the hardest Aya and seija spinoffs) is the last day, day 10. Seriously I'm not sure how I will be able to beat those monsters. Wish me luck 💀.

I have tried PCB and the Cherry Border does absolutly nothing, i would feel embarrassment if i did a game with that gimmick. I didnt even notice it gave resources, its just a bullet clear and thats it, maybe you could route it for some challenge runs but thats it. For being the game that killed the Rank and the death of the Dream Bar, that crap was not worth the death of those two.

The supernatural border auto-collects items, you can manipulate it with focused and unfocused shooting and is absolutely essential for scoring. Even though it is much less noticeable the game still has a rank system.

And it doesnt convince me. Its factually wrong that it does nothing, but it doesnt feel very involve, its still something thats just there, just like the Dream Bar, you kinda just ignore it. I never felt like 'oh damn i feel like i need that sweety score to ramp up some resources' as it also throws them at you. I dont feel im playing a game with a little cherry stuff, im just 2hu'ing it. I would rather see more work on the Dream Bar, maybe it would be a bit tiring since we got already two games with it. But just actually do something cooler with it rather than just copy and paste it, do some mad bullets and give little resources, so i feel i need to 2hu'ing it real good to win. ... tho you can say the cherry is kinda like the Dream Bar, as like the next evolution, but come on all you did last time was copy and paste it, this already your 5th vertical bullet hell.

And i didnt know Rank still survived till that game... i felt it died on 6, maybe i got it wrong. Dunno im very dummy dumb dumberlord, please be patience with me.

I don't know if you'd call it a 'mechanic' so much as an oversight, but Story of Eastern Wonderland caps your auto fire speed at a ridiculously low rate and the only way to match that of modern games is to mash the daylight out of the fire button. It's fine having to do so in the phantasmagoria games as you're not supposed to be shooting 24/7, but it absolutely blows in the regular titles. Always felt like I had carpal tunnel by the end of every playthrough with how fast you need to mash for good damage, and extra stage made my hands feel like they were going to fall off afterwards.

1. The UFO/Spirit Beast System in Touhou 12/17, which is pretty ironic considering Touhou 17 was the first Normal 1cc I got in a Touhou game and I do like the game. Micromanagement in a bullet hell game just don't pair well together and just makes things more distracting when you're already so focused on trying to dodge some many bullets on screen.

2. The item collection in Ten Desires is awful since you have to go towards the top of the screen which is very risky cause items don't naturally fall down towards you which also contributes to why item resources are scarce in the game.

3. Imperishable Night's Time System which is difficult to understand and adds micromanagement but it's pretty ignorable for the most part assuming you aren't going for Spellcard Capturing.

the god awful continue system of 10/11/12
I question the point of this continue systems compared to the one in others games that we have now. If you're struggling and dying to a stage that much, you might as well restart the entire game to pile up more lives at the beginning.

I find Narumi to be way worst than Aunn but I guess it depends on the context of which character and season you're using. I don't understand how Hidden Star in Four Seasons is considered to be one of the more easier Touhou games. It's been quite awhile since I played Double Dealing Character so I'm not sure how I feel about it.
