  2. Samidare

    Release Information
    Type: Vertical Bullet Hell Shooter
    Developer:  RebRank
    Publisher: RebRank
    Release: 2002-2005
    Language: Japanese
    Description
In 2785, full-scale war breaks out on Earth over the various nations' rights to extraplanetary resources. This war ravages the Earth's environment, forcing humanity to flee underground. It also sees the creation of the M.R.S. (Machine manufacture Research and development System), an automated manufacturing and battle system designed to allow wars to take place without actual human participation. Unfortunately, within five years of humanity's flight underground, M.R.S. has completely taken control of the Earth's surface, and the first exploratory group from humanity's underground Shelters is annihilated.
Not long after this first exploratory mission, the M.R.S. system discovers the Absolute Dimensional Barrier technology and eventually refines it into the Dimensional Absolute Barrier Shield; it uses its SMD series of warplanes to test and perfect the system. Unfortunately, the prototype unit, SMD-00x, disappears after activating the barrier for the first time, and though M.R.S. is eventually able to establish contact with the dimensional void into which SMD-00x disappeared, it's never actually able to find the ship again. Nevertheless, the system continues developing the SMD series, creating smaller, more capable craft such as the SMD-24-0x "Samidare", which is piloted by a humanoid control unit, C-22, and the final unit, SMD-31-FX "Gesshoku", whose control unit, C-23, possesses an advanced, self-aware AI.
Meanwhile, humanity is busy urbanizing its Shelters, developing bipedal robots (armed lightweight walking vehicles, or ALWVs), and preparing to take the fight to M.R.S. Sixty years after the cataclysm that drove humanity underground, it finally emerges to retake the surface. By this time, M.R.S. has developed significant internal defects, and the battle is relatively short. Within two decades, almost all M.R.S.-created automata on the surface have been destroyed.
Samidare's main story mode follows the major missions of SMD-24-0x: its testing against the biomechanical construct Sylphid, its encounter with Anareta, the defense system of long-ruined space outpost Tetra-Biblos, and its encounter with the SMD series prototype, SMD-00x. The extra mode follows a flight of the SMD-31-FX several decades later, after SMD-24-0x makes it back to Earth (if you get the good ending).

    Description

    The Storyline
Aya is yet again looking for material to write about in her newspaper, and an incident came with good timing too.     There seems to be a very peculiar incident where a plant-based epidemic has spread across much of the Youkai Mountain, and it appears that the only one to put a stop to the regional incident at the time was Momiji. Of course, she wouldn't stand a chance against an entire legion, so (with a little convincing) she recruited Aya to help resolve this fairly large incident.
    The Mechanics of this Game
With little more than your skill and judgement to rely on during most of the game, you must punch, super kick, dash, and jolt your way to the final boss and to a proper victory. (Like any proper rogue-like game)
Each stage has specific target enemies that must be dealt with in order to complete, and the stage will continue for so long as you and your target/s are both alive.
    Stat Upgrades
(In order within the in-game menu)
HP: How much raw damage you can take before going "pii-chun~"
HP Recovery: The amount of hitpoints you recover by consuming dropped food items from enemies.
Attack Power: Determines your basic combo and mega kick damage.
Defense: Reduces damage by a certain amount
Assist Power: Determines Momiji's screen-clearing damage.
Stamina Recovery: Determines how quickly you regain stamina for special attacks, maneuvers, and support calls.
Innate Effect: While not a purchasable upgrade to Aya, this section allows you to choose the perk that makes Aya a tougher or more dangerous nut to crack.
Innates can vary from simple stat modifiers to unique effects such as knockback immunity.
    Achievements
Not much is known about these stage achievements, but accomplishing any one of them will reward you with extra points for upgrades, various perks, and things that have yet to be identified.
    Sanae
Don't even wonder anymore. Sanae is a randomly appearing and ever wandering super-boss who deals monster damage and is after you in particular. Unlike any other enemy in the game, she rewards you with points proportionate to the amount of damage  you deal to her and doesn't need her to be defeated in order to gain.
Don't be too happy with this though, as she is more powerful than what you would ever think. Without full stat upgrades, you'll be swatted dead before coming close.
Do note that by defeating her, you permanently disable her ability to randomly appear in any stage and instead unlock her hidden stage. In this stage, she will be exponentially stronger, will NOT reward you on hit, and you must defeat her in order to gain anything out of this hectic duel.

  5. Takkoman -Kouzatsu World-

    Release Information
    Type: Action/Platform
    Developer: Illucalab
    Publisher: Illucalab
    Release: Reitaisai 9, May 27, 2012
    Language: Japanese
    Description
Plot Point: After an unknown catastrophe, Gensokyo, the world of order and richness, and Kouzatsukyo, the world of devastation and chaos, have been tied together as one. Now, it is up to Takorin, one of the arbitrators of Kouzatsukyo, to track down the creatures who escaped from and her world and find who - or what - is responsible.

How it Works: This plays out like a Megaman Zero game as you can kick your enemies to deal heavy damage or shoot them with eye lazers for rapid fire damage, you select from eight stages and as you beat each of the bosses you learn new moves to use against enemy.   Special Attacks: To preform one of the special attacks (Which you get from the first eight bosses) you press the keys that you got told to use from the results screen after the stage and then press the special attack button, this would do nothing if you entered the command wrong, but when you enter the command correctly you should see Takorin preform a special attack on the enemy, whether this is a screen clearer or a single target attack.   The game's Steam page (please buy it if you can):  https://store.steampowered.com/app/1732480/Takkoman_Kouzatsu_World/

  6. Tempest of the Heavens and Earth

    Release Information
    Type: 2D Action/Platformer
    Developer: LION HEART
    Publisher: LION HEART
    Release: Comiket 84, August 12, 2013
    Version: 1.10
Language: English (can switch to JP/CN)
AKA Tenjou no Tempest - Suppression by Celestial. Lullaby for Gaia

Notice: The game triggers a false-positive on most antiviruses

    Description

A bizarre phenomenon is occurring in Gensokyo when the land is ravaged by relentless earthquake. Tenshi Hinanawi flies down from heaven to investigate this incident and to relieve her boredom. Tenjou no Tempest, literally translated as The Tempest of Heaven and Earth, is a side scrolling action platformer adapting some elements of Touhou Hisouten. The game uses specific weather effects from ice, gusts of wind, thunder and rain. Every enemy has a specific weather effect associated with them, and killing an enemy by countering their attacks unleashes their weather condition. Also, most obstacles and stages must be overcome by using the proper weather effects.
There are four styles which can be fully customized to possess whatever bullet/spellcard type you wish. Important: Dashing through an enemy's attack animation will trigger a scarlet aura around the enemy. Attack the enemy with the Sword of Hisou to trigger a weather change effect. This is necessary at some points in the game to proceed. Scarlet mist on the ground are sources of large revenue. Use Sword of Hisou on them. You cannot activate them if you have full charge. Bosses sometimes will appear with different spellcards depending on how well you're faring. Taking multiple hits will result in your screen glowing red on the edges. This means you are close to death. To reverse the effect, you must stop receiving hits to regenerate constitution. Bullets/Spellcards can be bought with points that you have accumulated in the pause menu.

The game's Steam page (please buy it if you can):

    Description

Sanae & Momie - With Ibarakasen or sometimes known as "Sanamomie" is the next generation of Katsugeki Kidan's series but the story is not related. The game was developed using the same engine and requires players to eradicate demons by using 3 heroines: Momiji Inubashiri, Sanae Kochiya and Kasen Ibaraki. Each girl comes with different abilities and actions. Their special moves can be executed by pressing the direction key combined with the attack button ("shift" key by default). Momiji is a great destroyer and good for close range, Sanae is long range attacker with barrage bullets, and Ibaraki is a demon power user with medium strength.

For Starters: It appears to me that Gatling Cat has been receiving input from fans, and has responded in kind; that which is "Sanae & Momie" actually features three playable characters.
Momiji, who starred in the first 3 games, plus Sanae and Kasen.  You heard me right, Kasen Ibara.  That, and it looks much nicer than even Katsugeki Kidan 3; the graphics have, compared to their other games, received a huge makeover (most noticeably the HUD, which now displays numbers as well as very colorful gauges).

Other Stuff: This game, for the most part, generally plays almost identically to Katsugeki Kidan 3; after picking your girl and your difficulty level (Easy/Normal/Hard), you pick and play stages, where you kill regular enemies and a boss.  As with KK3, you also level up in this game (and this time, all your stats increase automatically every level, and you don't assign level-up bonuses; rather, you use the gold you collect to purchase permanent stat increases, which is all you'll be using it for).

Gold/XP Sutff: Unlike KK3, in this game, you do lose the Gold you collected in a stage if you die enough times to get sent back to the Intermission screen (which is now 3, and you can earn extra lives now too!).  You do still get to keep your experience, however (even though it looks like it says on the pause screen that you won't).

MP-Consuming Skills: Also, rather than clearing silly challenges for Nitori to earn skills and/or purchasing them from the shop, they cut that crap out too: you start with 4 skills (selectable on your Inventory Bar) and earn 2 more for beating two specific bosses.  Upgrades to skills you have are easily purchasable in the shop.  (Your Special also consumes MP, and as far as I can tell is not upgradeable.)

SP-Consuming Skills: Skills requiring you to press directional button(s) and hit Attack consume some of your Skill gauge instead of consuming your MP.  Your SP regenerates automatically when you're not using it.

Holdable Items!: Aside from finding instant-recovery rice cakes, you can also find what looks to be dark dumplings (around 10-15% HP restoration) and what appears to be a frosted filled donut (for 10-15% MP restoration), which you can hold up to 9 of each, and as with your skills, you simply select them on your Inventory Bar and hit the Skill button to eat them.  (Not sure what that third item is yet, haven't gotten that far, but I assume it restores both HP and MP.)

With similar gameplay to past Danmaku photography games like Shoot the Bullet you control your character to take photos of bosses and their danmaku with the addition of being able to shoot other than just taking photos to defend yourself. Explanation of Config
    TouhouWiki page for TDP

Want to Watch for New Pets?
    Page they're released on
Recently updated to version 3.  The five new girls are:
    * Satori Komeiji
    * Mystia Lorelei
    * Kogasa Tatara
    * Hong Meiling
    * Letty Whiterock

These are different from the regular shimejis; these float around on your desktop, and you can interact with them in a few ways (fast mouseover left/right will dizzy them, mouseover up/down forces them to move, and they'll look at you if you slowly hover over them).

When you right click them, you'll be asked if you want to set options (first choice) or close that pet (second choice).  In the configuration options are choices that are unique to each girl; you can set how fast they move, how fast they dizzy-spin, and if they have a special double-click option (like Youmu taking out/sheathing her swords or Nitori using her opti-camo), you can disable it, or in some cases set a special option for it (like how well Nitori's opti-camo works).

  11. Touhou Hakujinki - White Names Spoiled Past

    Release Information
    Type: Bullet Hell
    Developer: ido, Len
    Publisher: ido, Len
    Release: 2015
    Language: Japanese
    Default Controls
    Arrow Keys: Movement
    Z: Fire / Select
    X: Bomb
    Shift: Focus Movement
    Esc: Pause
    Ctrl: Fast Forward
    Description
Touhou Hakujinki, literally translated as Eastern White Dust Record, is a vertically scrolling shooter for Touhou Danmakufu ph3 shooting game engine developed by several members behind Touhou Jaseishou (The Last Comer) and Touhou Doumeiju (Mystical Power Plant). The composer for this game is Misora. One day, Reimu, Marisa and Sanae discover that the humans of Gensokyo have become unable to form memories. As they separately prepare to investigate the incident, they're each visited by someone claiming to have information on the culprit. Some important gameplay features that Touhou Hakunjiki introduces are three playable characters; Reimu, Marisa and Sanae, with several original characters non-existent in Touhou Project. Another distinguishing feature is mystery-solving elements in addition to danmaku. The player has to uncover clues behind the story to identify the culprit.

You gain extends via items, but you cannot get a life unless you have less than the maximum of three bombs.
This game is a royal pain to download and get running - you will need a specialized unarchiver to unopen the .lzh file, and it is unclear how to get the entire game into a single folder. Read more at the Touhou Wiki.

    Character Information

How It Works: Well this being a Mother game you walk around, going through different (and might I add weird) areas while fighting a wide range of enemies (some of which refer to memes). Boss battles are played out like normal battles except for you know it's boss because they have different battle intros to normal ones and the death animation is also different.   How To Install
Run the RPG2000RTP file in the RPG<Japanese Characters> folder, and change your system locale to Japanese somehow (such as through AppLocale).

  13. Sanae Challenge! Fusion

    Release Information
    Type: Platforming/Action/Capture The Flag
Developer: Lion Heart Publisher: Lion Heart
    Release: Comiket 78, August 14, 2010
    Language: English/Japanese
(English only on the main menus)

    Character Information
    Playable Characters: 1
(Sanae, Utsuho helps though)   Default Controls
Controls can be set in the Config.exe, and will accept a gamepad.
    Button 1 [Z]: Confirm/Shoot Stars
    ● Holding the button by itself makes her shoot a continuous stream of stars. These can be aimed in any direction after you start shooting.
    ● Hold Down and Shoot to create a wind tunnel to suck up nearby kedama; you can hold the wind tunnel open as long as you like. When ready to fire, hold the direction you'd like them to go in, and release the Fire button.
    ● Holding Down + Shoot on a base works on purifying a base to capture it. You can do a bit, walk away, and resume later if you must.
    Button 2 [X]: Jump
    ● Sanae can perform two midair jumps, and jumps really high to boot!
    ● In midair, hit Down + Jump button to hover on a whirlwind; this effectively puts Sanae in "standing on ground" status in midair so you can use the wind tunnel mid-jump. (Just jump to come down from your whirlwind.) Button 3 [C]: Call Utsuho
    ● You can only call Utsuho when standing on the ground or on a whirlwind.
    ● Hold the button and use Left/Right to select from the command list.
    ● Remember that Utsuho is a bird-brain; if you order her to Attack, she'll do it in the same direction you're facing, and she prefers to stay above your position.
    Button 4 [A]: Skip
    ● Useful for skipping boss dialogue.   Description
Concept: This is the second (and most recent) game in the Sanae Challenge series.  Sanae returns to gather more faith by capturing kedama bases throughout the many laps of each stage, at the end of which you have to fight a boss.  Also, you are joined by the hell raven herself, Utsuho!
How It Works:  In each stage, you have to capture kedama bases to gain faith and to move on to the later laps of the stage; your Faith value (the percentage on the right side of the screen) also acts as Sanae's health, so try and keep your faith high, or else you will fail the mission.  On the last lap of the stage you must fight the boss and capture the final kedama base to finish the stage and move on.
Utsuho: Once Utsuho joins halfway through stage 1 (she assists from the beginning of all other stages), she'll assist by using physical attacks when she feels like it, but you can hold the Call button to pick from a list of commands to issue to your bird-brained friend; you can order her to Attack to have her use her fusion energy to create a huge frontal blast, create a Barrier around yourself to prevent damage so you can capture bases more quickly, ask for Flight to hop on her back and fly around for a bit, or tell her to use Fusion to get rid of those ghost kedama!
Kedama: Hitting kedama or flinging them around with the wind tunnel only temporarily stuns them; the only way to destroy them is to capture the base they came from.  Different colors of kedama have different attributes or abilities (for example, black ones recover quickly, and green ones fire at you), so analyze and approach each situation accordingly.

  14. Rush the Hina

    Release Information
    Type: 2D Platformer
    Developer: Sweet Lapine
    Publisher: Sweet Lapine
    Release: Comiket 82, August 2012
    Language: Japanese   Description
Plot Point: Well, this is easy. There isn't one. Literally. You have to game modes, (Rush & Challenge) and picking one just immediately tosses you straight into the game.

How it Works: Well, you jump. And that's about it. Hina runs automatically at a set speed. There are gaps in the platforms, and it's your job to jump over them to make it to the exit/ as far as possible, depending on which mode you're playing. Also, Hina has double-jump capability. If the double-jump isn't enough for you, after you've used up both of your jumps you can continue to tap the jump button which will make Hina spin/hover up slowly into the air. However, you can't do this forever, as Hina has a stamina gauge which lowers as you spin.

Items that I guess I can mention:
Horseshoe-type orb item: Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what it's supposed to be, but it raises Hina's move speed. It also gives her silly little swirls where her feet should go. Just to mention that.
"Orz" orbs: I think they say "Orz" in the middle. Not sure. However, I do know that they drain a heck ton of your stamina meter, so avoid touching them.
EDIT: Apparently "orz" is some emote for defeat, so yeah. That's a thing. Applauds and stuff to Swfw
Black hole-type orb: Yeah, sorry. I don't have a clue what this does. Someone should be kind enough to mention it, if you find out.
Spirits: You find these all over the place. They're the bottom number in the top right corner of the screen. I guess they're added to your "score" or some such. Extras
    1. Yeah, sorry, but I didn't do a very good job with the items.
    2. The number in the very top-right corner is your distance.
    3. The Green things next to your Stamina are your lives.

How it Works:  You work your way through rooms which possess various puzzles and enemies you must traverse.  Basically the main secret to winning is opening chests (yellow dots on the room map; also not the case for Flandre's story) so that you can collect keys and other important items needed to open other rooms.  This game ensures that you practice the utmost vigilance as you must possess patience and fine dexterity to surpass the numerous obstacles.

Extra Notes:  After completing Remilia's route.  You will unlock the option of playing the "Extra" mode or "Clock Tower".  "Extra" is basically Flandre's route which tells her side of the story during the night of the incident.  Be cautious that difficulty is immensely increased but Flandre's superior power over her sister can compensate for that.  "Clock Tower" is a Time Attack mode which involves you climbing the clock tower (10+ floors) and and setting a record of how fast you can clear it.  Any of the three characters can used for this option; however, Flandre must be unlocked by beating the clock tower first.  This is also where Yuyuko tells her side of the story.

  17. Moeru Danmaku STG Moedan

    Release Information
    Type: Vertical Bullet Hell Shooter
Developer: Studio Ramble & D.N.A. Softwares
    Publisher: DNA Software
    Release: March 21, 2005
    Language: Japanese
    Default Controls
    Arrow Keys: Movement
    Z: Fire / Select
    X: Bomb
    Shift: Focus Movement
    Description
Moedan is a training game for newcomers to Touhou. You play as Flandre Scarlet and are given two spellcard options: Wide Shot and Linear Shot. Bombs clear bullets but do no damage. Alice Margatroid appears as a boss. The game is based on the player trying to clear spell cards, where each Spell Card have different patterns and provide players the opportunity to practice dealing with it. In each stage the player can earn silver medal by shooting down enough enemies/the boss within the time limit, or earn gold medal by surviving until the time runs out.
    Story Mode
Story mode functions the same as the "Imperishable Night" Practice section. Flandre must clear 50 spellcards, but don't worry. There isn't a set order in which you must clear one, so you can always skip one you are having trouble with and go back to it later. If you time a spell card out, you get a gold medal instead of a silver one.

    Freeplay Mode
Freeplay mode allows you to play the same spellcards from Story Mode, but you may add a few more options. You may increase the number of lives and bombs you start with, and you may choose as to whether or not to double the spellcard.

  20. Suwako-Chan Cubic

    Release Information
    Type: Isometric Shooting Game
    Developer: UTG Software
    Publisher: UTG Software
    Release: Comiket 82, 2012
    Language: Japanese

    Controls
    Z: Shoot
    X: Bomb
Shift: Jump (no focus in this game)
Esc: Pull up the pause menu
W,A,S,D: Mess with the camera angle-view thingie (I don't particularly care to mess with this, so stuff.)

Extra Notes: Also, if you're like me, and bad at these types of games, they also added in a "Very Easy" mode. It is in-fact, quite easy. Also, you can unlock Gallery Mode, by beating the other difficulties. So have fun with that.
    Description
Plot Point: I'm not sure, and from what I've played of it, I'm not sure if it has one. There isn't any talking in the actual story mode, so yeah. (Technically I haven't beaten the story either, but yeah.)

How it Works: Well, If you've ever played Suwako's Jumping-Shooting game, it's a lot like that. If you haven't then... 1. Imagine your standard Touhou game. Now imagine it if it weren't in 2D, or 3D even. 2. Now, look at the picture in the corner. It's like that. Enemies shoot patterns of bullets at you, and you dodge them, while shooting your own danmaku back. However, in this game, it's in a 2.5D (if that's the right dimensions I'm thinking of) field. What this means, basically, is that you can go under bullets AND jump over bullets. Also, this game has a really nice shield mechanic in case, like me, you aren't exactly the best at these kinds of games. If you are hit while your shield gauge (bottom-left) is at 100%, then you don't lose a life.

  21. Suwako-Chan's Jumping-Shooting Game

    Release Information
    Type: Isometric Shooting Game
    Developer: UTG Software
    Publisher: UTG Software
    Release: December 30th, 2010
    Language: Japanese
Number of Players: 2, in fact
AKA: Suwako no Danmaku Pyonpyon Daisansaku
    Description
Plot Point: "Suwako has a lot of free time. Way too much free time, in fact, so she decides to go for a walk. And then, what was once in 2 dimensions is now in 3. What is this frog's specialty, that this 3 dimensional world has long awaited? Jumping, which  is now different than how it used to be. Danmaku is incoming, from now on you must jump to avoid it. Go~" (Note: this is what I got after much staring at the site's "Story" section. 'Twill not be perfect, so yeah.)

How It Works: Well, If you've ever played Suwako-chan Cubic (the sequel), it's a lot like that.

Extra Notes:  Yes, I did indeed copy-pasta that from what I wrote for the sequel. Tough luck. Also, since this game came first, there isn't a cool shield function.
