  1. Okay, so now that I have time to think about all this. Here is the next step forward in all this. First, the site will NOT die. We are still going to offer the same server we have been for the past few years. Second, we will be moving the site and the file server to a different country where the DMCA laws are a bit more...laxed. In the interim, since we can no longer host the files "directly", we will be providing other ways to offer the content that won't technically go against the DMCA notice. And lastly, i want to say thank you all for sticking by us all these years. We are glad that you still continue to come to us for all your Touhou needs. ?

  2. Thanks to BlueMoon's help we managed to get our hands on Genso Wanderer again. How we managed to lose track of a 9-gigabyte game is beyond me. The download link is on Mega now for the time being since our database wasn't letting me upload it there directly, forgive me if your region/internet doesn't allow you to download from there. Better than nothing I suppose. All the DLC should still be intact. Don't be afraid to let us know if any issues arise. Cheers.

  3. A lot of time has passed since most of our hosted content went down; over a year in fact. Sorry about that, everyone. Throughout that time though we managed to get things back on track, hopefully. Torm made a dedicated seedbox, and I recovered every missing piece of official content; print works, OSTs, and music CDs. That doesn't seem like a big deal though, right? Anyone could've done that in less than a week if they were dedicated enough. Yeah, I realize I slacked a bit. I'm not too proud of it. But I wanna make it up to you; to not just fix the site, but improve it as a whole. As a result, I also added FLAC versions for almost all available music albums and OSTs, where applicable. When torrenting a file, you can select which folders you want to download from said file, so you can choose whether or not you want lossless versions of an OST (these files will be bulky, beware). In light of that feature, certain OSTs that had multiple pages (like Oriental Sacred Place) now have all volumes in one page, with all track lists in the description. Also also, on top of that, I uploaded two print works that were never on the site before; The Grimoire of Usami and Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia. I never knew these actually existed until my friend brought it to my attention and sent me the files herself; many thanks, Seija. I guess all I have left to say now is, keep working towards your goals. I know it sounds cliché, but it doesn't matter how slow you are going, so long as you do not stop. Know that you are valuable and that you matter. As always, let us know if you find any issues. Tomorrow will be sunny; yesterday was not.

  4. We recently had an issue that broke most of the fangame download links. This should no longer be the case. If you run into any issues still, let us know.

  6. Brief Introduction: Hm... So, i haven't been in the forum for months, and the reason is because i've been doing a lot on my personal life such as developing new personal relations and also working on myself, but before all that progress i had in my life, i went through the hardest times i could ever think of: the loneliness I'm an introvert, so i usually like to be alone, but it changes when it comes to feel alone I always loved to have my own time, thanks to that i discovered touhou and other things that made me happier, such as doing physical exercises and playing games, also thanks to that i found this forum where i did share a lot of my personal experiences and also opinions Since i disappeared, some people such as @CountVonNumenor asked what happened and if i was going to come back, and well, i'm not sure tbh, i found this forum cuz i wanted to share the few experiences i lived and also to know more about touhou, but in the transition between 2022 and 2023 my life changed completely, since i started dealing with several problems and also, with the loneliness feeling My experience with loneliness: So, since past year i've been talking to a girl which had several problems about health and her personal life, once she was a cocaine user and also a depression victim, but since i met her she changed, at least most of the time, she didn't use drugs or cut herself (due to her problems), it was life her life changed, even the subjects we used to talk about changed and instead of talking about negative stuff, we started talking about life and good things such as travels and etc Well, that was what i thought, this year she met another guy, but instead of trying to help her like i was trying to do, he did support her on all the shit she used to do, she even went to his house to smoke weed and have sex, and i didn't care at all, since it's her life and she can do what she wanted to I started to get away from her because she started saying weird stuff and asking me out, but i never wanted a relationship with her, and plus, some months ago she was having sex with another guy with the same problems as her, so why should i accept someone like that? Anyway, for some reason, i used to feel calm when she was near to me, but not because i loved her or smth, it's just because she was my only friend on work, once everyone went away from me since i started to meet up with her After some time she completely stopped to talk to me and blocked me on some places, and it made me get into a prison inside of my mind, i started to have a strong anxiety because i felt completely switched, i didn't have nobody to talk to, several times i did take my phone during the day to see if someone sent me a message or something, and nothing But then my friends tried to talk back to me, which didn't work, i got accustomed with being lonely, but i was still sad, so what i wanted at all? I wanted her company, i became a emotional dependant on her while she was hanging out with several friends who did the same drugs as her and had the same weird ideas as her And it made me notice what loneliness feels like, isn't just being alone, isn't just about not having nobody to count with, but yes about being in a prison inside of your head, a prison where you're feed with negative thoughts and self-devaluation, when you can't think about nothing aside from the problems in your life and when all you think of is about yourself and about how pathetic is your situation, thinking about how some kind of miracle would solve everything and make you get back to feel the way you used to when you were happier Nowadays, i'm with new friends and i don't have this feeling anymore, at least not at a very destructive point, i started dating again and now i have a way better life, but the first point to get better, was recognizing what i was feeling, and well, i know several people go through the same, and that's why i'll talk more about it now Loneliness: Well, being lonely isn't something that happens suddenly, but yes something that you only notice when it's already in it's extreme point, nothing is never enough at all, you feel alone even if there's people who would talk to you if you needed, you can't just ignore it because it will always get inside of your mind, when you lay down on your bed and look at the ceiling while thinking a lot about your life for example, when you're frequently feeling yourself empty and without value to others It is certainly worse when you really don't have nobody who cares about you, and well, due to that, several people end up developing depression and other problems, but a problem which always happen even if you have or not somebody who care about you, is the anxiety Being lonely causes a lot of anxiety, once you're frequently waiting for someone to send you a message or show some kind of interest on you, when you don't know what's wrong about you that apparently is making people get away and give up on having a talk with you, when you're thinking so much about the wrong points in yourself that you can't even work/study well, when you're always trying to find or receive something which can be a way to solve your problems And well, being lonely can end up making of you a true vegetable, which don't have any perspective of future and don't try to get better, and it can destroy completely someone, since those people can end up trying to be someone else instead of trying to be someone better I'm writing this because, nowadays, i opened my eyes about all this situation, and i can see a lot of people dealing with this same problem, and having no idea about how to solve it, i can't give a solution though, since the way i found to get better was forcing myself into new people till i found my friends i have now, and as much as i can recommend that, i'd say, everybody will always find their ways to solve their own problems Loneliness is literally killing people, and i say that not just because i had suicidal thoughts during that time, but also because i see a lot of people doing the same, and i did see people who actually did commit suicide due to this Please, take care of yourselves and try doing therapy or going to a psychologist, i'm not a doctor or a therapist, but yes one of the several people who already went through all that, and i don't desire this feeling not even for my worst enemy Maybe your problem can even be more serious, like depression or something, so, yeah, you should look for medical help if you identify with what i wrote, since i just got worse when i didn't look for this kind of professional help, i could get better alone, but this situation isn't the same for everyone See y'all someday! =D

  8. Time to get this off my chest. Alright, this thread has been spurred out of both seeing @CountVonNumenor's thread about burnout and also the general state of the Touhou fanbase on other sites, most notably Reddit (which has been going through a ditch), in which most Touhou fans/internet denizens seem to be downright oblivious/blind to changes or downright hostile to those who are protesting changes which keep the site aware of the users and keep it useful to everyone. To give a synopsis for clarity, I'm going to cover how Touhou fans existed throughout the years and how the internet changed the Fandom from a mostly creative fandom to a sanitized corporate outcome over the years, which inspires no creativity. Some of it will talk about Touhou, some will not, given that this sort of thing can apply to any fandom that exists on corporate-owned websites and not fandom owned. This kind of progression is why I'm giving the outlook a Terribad stamp due to the short attention spans of Touhou fans and the rabid tribalism of people justifying how Reddit is right in their horrible changes which will shoot them right back in the butt. This is sort of the expansion of the forum thread about attention spans here: This discussion is for people who have an attention span. (You know who you are ) Information will be kept into spoiler sections in order to save on scrolling. This is all based on my own opinions on what has occurred over the years. 1. The Start of the Internet (Touhou Fans Eating Good) This kind of discussion will talk about the early internet | around the <2000> s 2. The Rotting Starts (Sanitization and blandness starts) Hmmm, this probably started around the 2008-2020 this is when sites started to go corpo mode and start profiteering off the users. 3. What it is now◝(^⌣^)◜--> ^o^ --> n-n (People capitulate to Greed for instant satsifaction) The complete change of culture in Touhou | 2020-Present Time to act as a boomer, even though I was born at the time in which old forums were going out. 4. Burnout Zone (Opinion on why the fandom is at an all time low for creativity) So how is this going to end up? (Conclusion - Touhou fans and everyone hate everyone else) What are you looking at?

  9. I've been meaning to make this post for a while now. At one point I was gonna wait until the remix tournament had concluded for this, but uh, that doesn't seem so wise at the moment. So, what is this post exactly? Well, I've been on this forum for (almost) 4 years now. And a lot has changed in those 4 years, both in this virtual space and the real world. So, I wanted to take a moment to step back and reflect the changes within me, and how I fit into the context of this place. Things are changing about the way I use this forum - actually no, it's been evident for a while now, things have already changed about the way I use this forum. Back when I first arrived here, there was not much activity. But, I was excited to be able to share my time with other Touhou fans, and there were signs of life here, including from some moderators who had been with the site for a long time, so I made a lot of effort to show my face and drive up activity. Whenever a new post was made in the introductions section, I always made a point of welcoming members to give them the sign that there was indeed activity here. And with help from others who chose to stick around, a small but energetic ecosystem did begin to grow. Sometimes things got a bit lax, I didn't always have something to make a new thread on, but what I did have was a lot of time to be on the forum and interact with various topics of interest (not least of all the Musical Discoveries thread that cropped up after a year or two). Not everyone from those times has stuck around. Some only appear infrequently now, others have disappeared completely. However in more recent times, there has been an influx of new users. For me personally, the circumstances of my life have changed, what with me now studying Japan and Japanese at university. These are changes for the better! In fact, this is the best step in my life yet. However, it also means I no longer have the surplus of time for this forum that I used to. I'm content with that though; back then, I felt I needed to be active in order to keep the forum alive. But now, I see the forum in an exceptionally healthy state compared to what was here when I started. So, my input is no longer required. This isn't an "I'm going" post. My input is no longer required. Doesn't mean I'm about to quit inputting. However, I am reaching a stage in my life where I'm starting to distance myself from this forum. You may not see me as regularly as in the past. Don't get me wrong, I still love Touhou, but I'm also not quite as hyperfixated as I used to be, what with no longer being on the rush of experiencing all the games as new and fresh, back to back. Whenever a new game comes out though, I think you can expect to see me back here with something new to say. I'm also going to have the opportunity to spend a year in Japan at some point during my course, and when I do I absolutely intend to indulge myself in the Touhou experience, so if there's anything interesting I learn (or anything people want me to go and find out), I'll surely share it when the time comes! So in the meantime, just know that I'm still looking out for what goes on here, even if I don't post much. It's likely that from time to time, I'll still have something interesting to show or tell ya, and I'll still see discussions I want to take part in. But I've got places I want to go in life, and distancing myself from this website is something I'm ready to do, and thanks to the upsurge in users, something I feel comfortable doing.

  10. Hi everyone! While I was searching for Touhou content I have found a lot of lost media. The goal of this topic is collecting information about lost media and links in one place. There are some categories for systematization. In each category the media goes from more well-known or having more chances to be found to more obscure. If you have some info about this lost media or some other lost media, post it. Lost sites Lost games Lost music Lost fan anime Lost other media Lost Animations Strange disappearances Lost Youtube videos and channels

  12. Whatever comes of this DMCA, I just really hope the forum doesn't get shut down because of it. At first I thought it was just some troll but more and more it now seems to be ZUN's legal team. I have no idea what the future of this site will be without the downloads, no one will have a reason to come here anymore, but I don't want the whole site to get destroyed because it means a lot to me. I knew something like this would come eventually but I was not prepared for it right now. I've visited this site nearly every day for 3 years now. Things are awful in my personal life right now and knowing I could come back here and talk with other Touhou fans on the forum has been an important escape for me. That's not to mention how important Moriya has been for making Touhou accessible. Without it, my life literally wouldn't be the same right now. I hope this isn't the end for Moriya Shrine.

  13. A huge piece of history for everyone is their username online. Where did yours come from? Mine is from when I was very young, playing typing games in the computer lab. I hadn’t had a solid username yet, and I was obsessed with Pokémon sun and moon, which just released at the time. I also loved Kirby, and thus, loved meta knight. So, my first username became Metalunalion, with parts from meta knight, lunala, and solgaleo. This would be it for a long time, but along the way it became metalunalium for ease of pronunciation and the suffix on Z-crystals. Eventually, I got hit by character limits a lot. I had to shorten or change my name. So my alt tag for awhile( and still is ) was Maelstrom, just cuz I liked the word. Then, my current username came to me like an OC idea: out of completely random inspiration. I then got to Juunim as my username, which has stuck but was lengthened to Juunimeta to not erase my old one completely.

  14. The ending CGs were good in the past, back in 1998 (25 years ago)... In Mystic Square, the ending has different fully colored drawings with a good art style despite the limitations of the PC98 hardware. Look at this: Now that the veins of hype are dry on my end, here's my opinion/review of Touhou 19. TLDR: The "Unfinished" in the title describes the game perfectly. Good Things: 1) The game has good mechanics. Charging attacks is intuitive and easy to pull off, getting the meter bar full is a simple collect the orbs, the spared hit is a good mechanic to make the game less punishing, although it's exploitable if you are good enough. Once a competitive metagame develops, we will know for sure how well done the combat system is. 2) Artistic department is beautiful. I really like the new designs and ZUN is improving his music, he used a lot of new instruments to him, the mixing is great, and the melodies still feel fresh even if he still composes with the same kind of tricks. 3) The story and writing is great. We still don't know the full details, but from what I've read, it depicts Gensokyo in the brink of a war, and it has a lot of interesting dialogue. For example, Son Biten being gaslighted into believing she's Son Goku's reincarnation, Hisami's possibly masochist tendencies and Chiyari being a hikikomori. She also managed to get me uncomfortable due to how creepy I find her. And that's all. Yeah i didn't like this game. I don't like a ZUN game since Touhou 11, it's incredible how massive his screw-up was in this one. I may dislike Touhou 11, but the game is finished and decently polished, not the case here. Bad Things: 1) The CPU is unbeatable. Especially when you take into account the "Human vs CPU" mode. As the CPU in this game is practically invincible, it's not like in PoFV where the CPU gets hits in normal. In about 2 hours of gameplay, the best I did was getting the CPU to drop 2 death bombs, meanwhile I was playing Orin VS Zanmu. 2) Lack of features. There's no replay and score system and ZUN can't justify it because he loves to reutilize assets, how hard is it to adapt the 18 game catalog's code to this game or hire someone? 3) Online is unplayable. I couldn't even join a match. The character selection screen dropped frames like crazy, and it had like 30 seconds of input lag. I won't be so critical here because I suppose that writing online multiplayer is very challenging. But why did ZUN not hire someone to make a reliable system? 4) Inconsistent art styles. It was a good idea to introduce new character sprites and boss sprites, but the job was badly done as returning characters like Sanae have their sprites from Touhou 12 meanwhile others are showing off new sprites. But not everyone got a fair deal, Ran's player/back sprite is vomit inducing. If ZUN at least allowed to remake all the player sprites, it would have consistent aesthetics. And he didn't fix the character selection screen to always be a hexagon, instead you get the ugly circle until you select someone. 5) Poor game balance. Half the cast encourages masochism, for example, I only managed to do decent damage with Orin thanks to the cards you get in story mode. Meanwhile, Reimu literally has infinite bombs with a good bullet slowdown aura. What the hell? 6) Atrocious pricing. I can't believe the game costs $15 with all the fundamental problems tainting the experience. For example, Terraria gives you tenfold the content for just $10 and Mystia Izakaya, a complete game without mayor problems (I didn't try it), is only $6. I can't even feel bad for pirating Touhou 19, it's simply not worth the $15. Before at least you got a finished experience with good polish and hours of entertainment. 7) ZUN's pride I believe we are entering a dark period of Touhou if ZUN doesn't drop the pride. Touhou is a FRICKING SOCIAL PHENOMENON in Japan, I'm sure he can hire more people to improve mainline Touhou even more. And not a gigantic amount of people that could bankrupt ZUN, he only needs a few beta testers, someone capable of providing a good online experience and a team of translators. 8) Development problems. If you pay close attention to how the story mode works, you will notice that once you reach a certain amount of time in a fight you automatically win, why is that? ZUN realized the CPU was unfair, but instead of fixing it, he made a quick lazy patch to allow players completing the story mode. Why did ZUN make that choice instead of fixing the problem? I don't know what happened, but Touhou 19 seemed to be stuck in development hell, as it's unusual that he didn't try to fix it by just reutilizing PoFV's CPU (I know he has the code, he kept the sprites after all). 9) Poor roster I know the roster makes sense for the story, but it's very strange that ZUN didn't include more characters. Combined with past games and the card mechanics of 18, he can easily introduce at least like 15 characters. And if it ruins the story, make them extra unlockable characters that aren't involved in the story. It would fit the style of progressively unlocking characters, like how it's done in Smash Bros. It also has some nonsensical character choices like Seiran or Orin, they don't add anything to the story. Something else that's weird is not having Kasen, Clownpiece, Keiki, Chen or Hecatia involved in the story as they are directly affected by the plot of the game. (yes, Chen technically appears in Ran's attacks, but why don't make her more independent?) Conclusion: I'm honestly impressed that, at the time of writing, ZUN is getting away unscathed after such a bad game. Steam's reviews are very positive and I can't comprehend how. Most of the critics I gave are due to a surprising lack of testing, polish and passion in developing this game, not me disliking core parts of the game entirely based on taste (like how I can dislike puzzle games because they don't entertain me). I want to like this game, as the things it does right are amazing, but it has fundamental issues that are only justified if the game was in early alpha. I really hope ZUN patches most of the game's issues (something unlikely to happen) and if that's not the case, at least that Touhou 20 or 19.X is a polished experience with good gameplay and new people on board. Maybe it's time for ZUN to either expand Team Shanghai Alice or hand over Touhou to new developers, it's unacceptable to have this experience in 2023 and a complete lack of improvements in a lot of areas. I just can't get over the fact that games made 25+ years ago on the very limited PC98 platform have comparable quality. Not even counting early Windows era games, my god. ZUN please do something.

  15. Have AMA's recently become some kind of silly trend on this forum? Yes, yes they have. But whatever, it gives me something to discuss about, and having been here a long time I'd like to think I'm an interesting enough person for people to have questions about me. So, if there's anything you want to know about me, this is your opportunity to say it! It doesn't have to relate to Touhou in any way, you can ask me literally any question you want - although I am not obliged to answer, so I recommend keeping things tasteful if you actually want to be taken seriously. Other than that there's nothing else to say about restrictions, so ask away!

  16. It has been some time, like... 2 months? Something like that xd Well, i wanna be honest, i left the forum for all this time due to some bad stuff, such as negative feelings and this kind of thing, but i'm slowly recovering from all that and getting back to be the way i used to be As i could see, a lot of new people joined the forum, that's great! I hope we can have good experiences here! =D I will come back later to talk about everything in more details, but is great to be back! Thanks for everyone who didn't forget about me and still want me here =) I'll take a look into the new threads now, see you guys later =D

  19. Do you know what is one thing I miss from the old days of the internet? OCs, Original Characters. For all the cringey self-inserts, Donut Steel jokes and recolors of Sonic the Hedgehog, there was a charming innocence to them. Most were a child or teen’s attempt at creating something new for a world they loved. Some did not fit the source material, but felt genuinely good enough to have their own story. Others fit flawlessly. For some reason though, I seldom see people talk about their Original Characters today. I’m not sure if it’s gone out of vogue with the rise of multiplayer games or I just don’t know where to find them. Touhou itself I have seen few OCs for, though I am sure there were a number of them in the 00s. The material is ripe for creativity, and there are OCs I have seen referenced as characters in fan games. In fact, I am willing to bet that all of you had an OC at some point. In honor of the innocence of youth and the joys of creation, let’s play a game. Post a character meant for the world of Gensokyo that you or someone else made. Write a little bit about them, their backstory and motivation. Any stories about them which make you proud or make you cringe. I’ll start, even if mine is a little unusual. A few months ago, I was having burnout from tabletop games, which have been largely the same in the West for more than a decade. D&D makes up the lion’s share of the game space, and most other big games imitate it. To shake me out of my rut, I had a group of friends on Discord pick out an indie or fan game they enjoyed the look of and we would run it. On the list was Danmaku Yuugi Flowers. A Touhou fan game I had put on the list for how different it was. My game was set in a homebrew world, but I wanted the characters to be authentic to Touhou's style. Starting my slide into the fandom. Naturally, a tabletop game needs NPCs. My first creation for the world was a vampire named Hope Black. I wanted to give her a wholesome, Midwest country girl vibe. Though I also designed her to be an inversion of Remilia. Instead of opulent glamor, she has a homely charm. She lives alone in a log cabin, and keeps a farm on her own. She’s also one of the guardians of the land, who I really should come up with a name for. Though she is still new to the role and uncertain in herself. I wish I could tell you more about her and what the others thought. Sadly my workload at my day job has spiked again, keeping us from playing. So now I am just left with this character concept and a doodle I made over a lunch break.

  20. Alright this is something you all probably have dealt with and talked about. Every Touhou fan has seen that person talk about the Western side being not that dedicated to making Touhou content and or is less dedicated to appreciating good content. I feel like this is part of a deeper problem, maybe something dealing with the way the internet has changed the way most people grew up with consuming content. Tons of content on the internet is mostly just brain food with bright colors and or provoking material (Some edgy crap, and or sex appeal bait) Now here is the point. I feel like Western content in general is burning me out. I've seen everything from the darkest pits of the internet to the general tip of it. Now I feel like I've wasted my time as all of it was designed to prevent people from actually having a conversation and act like mindless machines who are driven by instinct for high-quality short form content and or constantly trying to be a dipshit to others for a reaction and or generally stupid takes because their parents never loved them. ( °□°) ︵ ┻━┻ "Take It Easy!" I CAN'T, GODDAMN IT! Everywhere I go, I see some crappy meme with a Fumo getting more attention than doujins. You know about Rick Rolls? "NO, NOT THE JAPANESE GOBLIN! IM BEGGING YOU!" "We are Japanese Goblin!" "AUGGHHH!" "AMONGUS, AMONGUS WHERE? AMONGUS IN YOUR GODDAMN EYES" *Sound effect cues* "Hey Mister!" "Want a Sprite Cranberry?" STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCUM. "AHHHHHHHHHHHH" Okay that's all.

  21. Yeah dude, like I just did that 10-30 minutes ago and you don't know how happy I was. I really wanted to scream but it was kinda late at night so I just celebrated with a fist in the air or something like that. I know this achievement isn't crazy like the others, but I'm just so happy I beat the game that I have to post about it. When I saw the ending with Reimu,Remillia,Yuyuko,... talking to each other, I just smiled at the conversation. I'm just so glad about beating the game man. I calculated and practiced to beat the game! I was on my last bomb at the end! And when the time counted to 0 at the last stage? It was euphoria. I also want to say that I like the cherry border system because it really brings out the courage in you, what I mean by that is that when it's activated you kinda like force yourself to make risky moves and find a way to dogde to bullets. It makes the game pretty fun to play! I guess it's gonna be harder from here on out with the other games haha. But maybe that's what makes it fun or what the other games have to offer that is going to be fun, idk but anyways! Sorry if I wrote a bit too long, I'm just enjoying myself right now. Have a nice day everyone!

  22. Hello one and all, its a pleasure to meet you all this fine evening. I am Yumetou, a man with too little time on his hands. My name is a portmanteau of Yume Nikki and Touhou, a game I know very well and a series I don't know that well, and both staples of the 2000s weeb scene. Unlike most of you, I have never actually played a Touhou game, and for a long time didn't know what it was. References to it were everywhere when I first started using the net, but no one I knew played or even knew what it was. It was a weird circumstance, with fan art and fan music remixes being everywhere. Yet I had no idea if it was a game, anime, manga or something else. I loved the music of course, but it felt awkward to sidle into the Youtube comments section or an image board conversation and ask 'Yeah I like this, but what is a Touhou and where can I get one?' Eventually, my family axed our internet to save on bills. I grew up, got a job, and almost forgot about that part of my life. Almost. Touhou recently reentered my life through the magic of the cute and cursed Fumo memes. Sharing some led me to discover a couple friends of mine were diehard fans of the series. While watching a video one of them recommended, Moriya Shrine was mentioned as a place to download older games not available in the West, and a place to meet other fans. Being a longtime lurker on old image boards, nostalgic for memories of the old Internet, and having never beaten a Touhou game, I thought I would join the Shrine. I have frightfully little free time, but I am hoping to browse, try various games and ask for tips, especially for the early bullet-hells. I used to love play-by-post forum roleplaying, so perhaps I will see you there. I am hoping to make more friends like those who introduced me to the series, and stir a little bit of my old nostalgia, before the last of my gamer skills fade away. Thank you for taking the time to read my autobiography. I am looking forward to seeing more of all of you!

  23. On the 25th of February 2023, ZUN was invited to a high school talk show where he was asked several questions about Touhou. While there doesn't seem to be a video archive, a Twitter user called AQNAWNA made a recap of the questions and answers. And from there, the questions have been translated to English by user IceFairy. In the following presentation, I will use the translations of IceFairy, which can be found here: https://twitter.com/richard_effendi/status/1629816649493942273?s=20 [ZUN appears on stage and reveals a presentation slide] ZUN: I made the slide while I was on the bullet train heading here. (Note, I won't be translating every tweet as some of them have already known information. I'll be translating the interesting ones) Host: Are the music CDs connected to the games in any way? ZUN: If I say they're definitely connected, it might cause some sort contradiction somewhere. So I just have them as vaguely connected in some way. Host: Recently there's been a lot of current events related content in Touhou, hasn't there? ZUN: It's because the series is like my diary. Whatever I'm feeling at the moment, I put it in the games. I think the first time I put something that was undeniably current events was in DDC. At the time overseas indie games were becoming mainstream and I wanted to make a game that had my feelings of "Hey, we have doujin games here, too!" Host: The games have been popping up on Steam recently, haven't they? ZUN: Well... It's cause nobody buys CDs anymore, hahaha. PCs don't event have disk trays anymore. And most shops don't carry them either. I thought it'd be best to go with the flow. Host: As a doujin game creator, what are your thoughts on the world becoming less interpersonally connected? ZUN: I don't really need interpersonal connections when making games, since I make them alone, hahaha. But I do miss the fun I used to have going to offline events. Chatting with people online makes me feel a bit lonely. Host: There's been more officially recognized gacha games lately. Did you have a change of heart about them? ZUN: Nope, still not fond of them, hahaha. Don't think I'd ever make one myself... They say it's "free to play", but they're definitely not free to play. Host: What are your future plans for Touhou? ZUN: Well, I'm getting on in years. I plan to keep making it until I don't want to anymore, but I'm also afraid of when that time comes. So I've been ruminating on how to keep myself motivated in making Touhou. Host: Any plans on making things other than Touhou? ZUN: Everything I make ends up becoming Touhou anyways, so, nope, hahaha. Host: The moon appears often in Touhou, any special reasons? ZUN: I just think the moon is neat, hahaha. I like the words "lunar capital" and "lunar exploration". I also like Mars. Host: Any plans on having Mars appear in Touhou? ZUN: Hmn... Well, humans might be going to Mars in the future. We still don't know what's on it. It might be interesting to have Mars in Gensoukyou... hmn, not too sure about it yet. Host : Tell us about the Yukkuri trademark incident. ZUN : Well, Dwango took care of it pretty quickly. And the culprit also rescinded the trademark. But, we also needed to avoid a repeat of this incident, so... So a few days ago the patent office put out their opinion on Yukkuri as a genre. It should be alright now. To be honest, I feel like that incident became an advert for yukkuri (hahaha). I got excited when yukkuri started appearing on broadcasts. It was kinda fun. as a result of that, everyone became familiar with yukkuri (continued). In that way, I kinda way to say "thank you" to the instigator (hahahaha). Q: What's up with the clown in Dolls in Pseudo Paradise? ZUN: Clown? What Clown? Are you talking about the jacket illustration? It doesn't have any special meaning... To be honest it's been so long ago, there's a lot I don't remember. Q: How many Ultimate Foul Lifeforms have come up to you (note : the title you get if you clear Impossible Spell Card without Items). ZUN: A lot, hahaha. There were middle schoolers among them, too. Pretty amazing. Q: Are you an Ultimate Foul Lifeform? ZUN: Nope, I can't become one either, though I set the difficulty it so it's not impossible to become one. Q: How good are you at Shoot 'Em Ups? ZUN: I used to be pretty good at it. Though, lately I struggle to clear Lunatic... I make the games clearing the stages separately instead of all in one sitting. It's fine to set the difficulty to a level where I can clear it, but if I don't increase the difficulty some people will be able to clear it pretty fast just like that. Q: Any plans on reviving the PC-98 characters? ZUN: I'm not gonna say "yes" or "no". For questions like that, I'll just accept your desires. Q: How do you decide on the character names? ZUN: I ruminate about them until the deadline. If I use common names, then I'll and up with characters with the same surnames and given names. I also have to make sure the names fit with the character. If it doesn't feel right, I try again after thinking some more. If it feels right then I decide on it. Sometimes I change it pretty close to the deadline. And when that happens, I can forget to change the old name somewhere. (Narumi/Naruko) Q: What sort of Youkai is Meiling? ZUN: I believe... I had it written in PMiSS, "Youkai" simply means "other". If it's just "youkai", then there's no species, just think of it as "something that's not human". Q: Which games should I play? ZUN: I think you should ask the fans that not me (hahaha). But ok, the latest game.... right now is UM, so why don't you play that? Since the series is my diary, if it's too long ago, I don' remember it that well. Q: What do you think about the popularity poll? ZUN: It's fun to watch. Though, I don't entirely get Youmu getting first place or Flan getting first place. There should be a lot more bigger weirdoes than them in Touhou. Q: I'm a 20 year old male. How do I become Marisa Kirisame? ZUN: Well... Why don't you buy a pointy hat and put it on? (hahaha) But you know, Marisa is still a human, so it's pretty easy to become her. Otherwise you'd need to reject your humanity. Q: Do you have designs for characters who are only mentioned in the setting? ZUN: No, at least for the ones I don't plan on giving an appearance in the future. A part of these questions have also been covered by Megapig9001 in his most recent video: And an interesting conclusion someone has reached based on the Q&A: "Alright, this confirms something I've been suspecting for ages now: ZUN has literally no idea what goes on in the Touhou fandom. His insistence on not looking like he's playing favorites (or whatever's going on) has led to a profound ignorance regarding which characters are popular and why. He wasn't trolling by keeping Flan in reserve for two decades; he truly believed this whole time that no one was interested in seeing her again. That said, I'm glad to know he doesn't base his creative decisions off of whatever fans seem to want most. He neither caters nor trolls. For better or worse, he does what he feels is best from an artistic standpoint".

  24. hello guys! my username is H4V3N (if you couldn't tell). I am very interested in getting involved with the forum, and help people with problems they are facing! like everyone else, I'm into touhou , I found 2hu via muse dash, they had a touhou dlc that they released a year or two ago i think. anyways, some things i like about touhou are the characters and their backstories, the backstories really captivated me and the girls are really cute. another thing i like about touhou is the music, its very unique and wasn't like anything else I have listened to before. I don't have a favorite 2hu yet, mainly because it's really hard to choose. ehhh.. thats pretty it, i look forward to some fun moments here. see yaaa (also how do you get that fancy text under your posts?)

  26. I don't want to touch this, and I'm far too upset about it to address it properly, but the longer its left the worse it's getting. RoboticSquire, with all due respect, you're out of line here. It's one thing to be concerned about the mannerisms and behavior of people around you; plenty of people from multiple perspectives will sympathize with the general sentiment. But you are not concerned; you are offended, and you have no right to be. You are making accusations in arrogance; you want people to change because you're uncomfortable, not because you actually care about them. 1 Corinthians 13:1-2 says "If I speak with tongue of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophesy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing." For your own sake, please stop this; you are not going to accomplish anything.

  27. The year is about to close. Therefore, I think it might be time for us to go through a little recap of things that happened this year within the Touhou community. Initially, I was planning to turn it into a timeline thread, but then I realized that I forgot the date for some of the events. This does not prevent us however from making the timeline once more events are collected to the list. Therefore, what do you consider to be some of the most important events to have happened this year? The good, the bad and the ugly, anything is welcome here and can contribute to a greater image. As my own vision of the things may be limited, I am looking for all of us to bring a contribution to the list, and have a discussion about some of these events (do not just list them; I think a better approach would be to also add a comment/opinions on said events). With that mentioned, let's get into the content itself: Official games: 2022 marks the 20th anniversary of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil/Touhou 6, and therefore 20 years since our beloved series has made its way to Windows in the anniversary year, we have also received one new official game - Touhou 18.5 or 100th Black Market, the first game that features Marisa as the sole protagonist and works as a continuation of the mechanics from Touhou 18, with an added "rogue-like" layer (something new for the series) Touhou 17.5 has received a new patch, adding a story for everyone's favorite goat with oversized spoon Yuuma Toutetsu Touhou 9 received an official release on Steam Fan games like every year, the community has held its famous Game Jam (the 8th Touhou Game Jam), where we got more new interesting projects some new games started making a name for themselves, probably the ones I am most familiar with being Hina-Chan Big Trade Millionnaire, Hina-Chan 2nd Break, Mystia's Izakaya and Touhou Lost Branch of Legend Official music this year, we have not received any new official music album; the only thing I could count this year in terms of official soundtrack would be the music associated with Touhou 18.5 Fan music 2022 has been a year in which music circles have shined - every brig group, from Shinra-Bansho, Akatsuki Records to beatMARIO and so many more have produced music videos that are not ingrained into the culture of our community and probably the greatest star in terms of fan music this time has been Internet Survivor; released just around the 20th anniversary of EoSD, the song and music video could not have landed any better for the fans. Some even consider it to be one of the things that boosted the popularity of Flandre and her game in all charts of the 2022 Touhou popularity poll Fan animations this year has marked the rise and or/prominence of a number of animated content creators - Mirae Somang, Mush-Broom, lunaPrism, Vegemite-Flavored Indomie MMD, Jo2n, GoruposStudios and many more I may not be aware of MTB is still doing animated videos, this year making a variety of music video recreations based on Touhou characters (Baby Hotline, Killer Queen and Farewell, Narcissus) one cannot ignore the fact that Japanese Goblin has been revived by the same MTB; not only that, but the song actually spread even outside the Touhou community for a while; after some initial backlash, we have ended up with two versions of the music video Fan content creation (overall) early 2022 marked the beginning of the popular cookie-cutter format shitposting on the western scene of the fandom; making use of the horny nature of Touhou fans, formats like "Touhou fans be like", "Average Touhou Fan" or "Top 10 (something Touhou)" have ruled western YouTube for the first half of the year. They still exist up to this day, easily recognizable nowadays due to the use of either cropped Touhou hentai images of Fusu art (sometimes both, sometimes Fusu is both too), even if they are a mere shadow of the peak despite the bleak beginning of the year, quality gems also came from the overall pile of mediocrity new lore channels hava made their rise - Megafrog with the Cosmology of Gensokyo, Pantheon of Gensokyo, 2hu Bites and the monthly Hifuu Community Club podcast - Suwawako, for someone giving the vibe of shitposting and member of the Gensokyo Boiz group, actually came up with some very good videos and interesting topics to talk about, from obscure community events to Touhou fan game reviews - GensouChronicle has been probably the greatest star of this year; a new lore channel created this year, he has already started to make a name for himself in one of the niches that the western side of the community is really lacking: lore. His highlight video of the year has been Touhou: Worldbuilding with J. R. R. Tolkien, enjoyed by over 45 thousand people by the moment I am writing this thread. For a new channel, he has been one of the most pleasant surprises the Western Touhou community gave us, especially in a moment when I was starting to feel like everything is lost in terms of quality control of the "average (western) Touhou fan" and the content they produce. I have mentioned him many times recently, but I really believe he has potential to become a relevant name for the community, and perhaps in turn help create a better community one video and positive interaction at a time - one creator I have not had the chance yet to check, but who looks promising, is Cinder Squad; he is also a new channel, but the 3 videos already uploaded, on the explanation of lore behind Touhou 6, 7 and 8 look to be very promising in terms of quality Community overall, 2022 has been a very interesting year for the community a lot of people have celebrated the 20th anniversary of the series on Windows, occasion which allowed them to pump out of a lot of new fan-made content Fumo as a whole have become more accessible to find, but the the same time getting one has turned into a warzone, which lead to a lot of frustration each time a new batch was sold in mare minutes after the beginning of the sale Moriya Shrine received a DMCA from ZUN, this act marking a change in the stance towards piracy (stance that everyone seemed to be status quo since 2009); the reactions to the events have been mixed, some defending the website while others condemning its actions while Moriya Shrine was hit, another frontline opened temporarily as there was the "Touhou wiki vs shippers" incident, which was needlessly dragged to Twitter and made the things uglier than they should have been there has been an attempted at a trademark related to the famous Yukkuri, or at least a phrase associated with them, which led to serious backlash and eventually the cancellation of the trademark Touhou Danmaku Kagura announced its End of Service at the end of July, and the game was officially closed down on the 27th October; during the final goodbye to the game, it was however teased that DanKagu would come back in a new form the following year, through a Steam game. The crowdfunding campaign for the game has been un astonishing success, the financial goal being fulfilled in just a matter of hours after years of controversy due to its shady background and creation process, a new officially licensed Touhou mobile gacha game, Arcadia Record, has been released. Since the game is currently available only for the Japanese side of the community, there is not much talk about it

  28. I'm going to be honest here. I think some people are taking the results way too seriously. At the end of the day, the popularity poll is just meant to be something fun for the community. It shouldn't affect how you feel about certain characters and themes, since it's your vote that matters the most. That being said, I love all the characters, so I'm happy with any outcome!

  29. I’ve noticed that what makes Touhou more noticeable than any other game is the way ZUN draw his character, I don’t think that Touhou would have the same atmosphere if the character were drawn in a classic manga style, I think it would be just a regular bullet-hell game (I guess it’s the way Touhou game genre is called). Anyway, I would like to know what is your favorite Touhou character illustration (made by ZUN of course ^^) if you hesitate between one or another just post them both ️ It can be from a game, an album, concept art… ️ It would be interesting if you can say what you like in the illustration you choose. No problem if you’re lazy to write it So, let’s start with me, I love Reimu illustration in Touhou Imperishable Night. She looks like a doll, I love her design and the color design is fantastic too. It makes me feel a sort of nostalgia… that’s why it’s my favorite illustration ^^ it’s your turn now !

  30. As some of you may have noticed, I have barely been active at the Moriya Shrine forum for the past months. For anyone wondering, I am still doing fine, I have just been a little busy with college life and trying to get through all my courses. However, there is another question that rose - am I slowly losing interest in this series? Background I have discovered Touhou somewhere in October 2020. Ever since, I have become increasingly hooked up into this fictional world, along with all the creations fans have put up. I feel like the peak of my activity in the Touhou community started in early 2022, as I finally joined this forum and became very active in discussing a series that I really enjoyed. Things started to change, however, as 2023 started to march on... There are a few symptoms I have noticed: 1. I have become less active in discussions about Touhou As mentioned earlier, I have been less active than I would have liked for the past months. In the past, I used to roll a thread every few days, and maintain discussion about it in tens of essay-sized comments. Today though, I think this is probably my first thread in weeks, if not outright months. A lot of the energy I used to have is simply gone, and I really need something that would help me get back at it. 2. I have started to find other series that caught my interest A warning sign for that started when I opened up the threads about other series people like, along with the discussions about other series and anime in general. First cracks started to appear in January-Febraury this year. That was when I first got my attention diverted to another series, that being Amagami. As time went on, things went a little wild, as what started as a curiosity about the world and characters of Kancolle and Azur Lane ended up with me playing the latter. (what can I say, I just believe Ise is pretty, and Hood has a very sweet and elegant demeanor). As time went on, I started to pay less attention to what was going on with Touhou, and focused more on what I thought I was enjoying at the time. I thought I was just picking a new series in order to keep myself fresh and avoid a Touhou burnout, but it seems like new the new things I discover keep me away from Touhou. 3. I am not feeling as excited anymore about new Touhou things Back in my first months of being a Touhou fan, I remember that I used to be extremely excited for the announcement of Touhou 18. For comparison, nowadays I am barely aware of the fact Touhou 19 is gong to be released (actually, I have plenty of moments in which I am even forgetting there is going to be a 19th mainline game). Same is going for the official literature. I am not feeling any thrill anymore for the release of a new chapter from the ongoing manga series (not that I even kept so much in touch with them outside the CDS capter which gave us Mizuchi). Probably my greatest moment of excitement was when I bought the entire Forbidden Scrollery collection, but it's been already a year since I bought the first volume, and I still have two more to read. One more example would be that of listening to Akatsuki Records, In the past, I was keeping up with all of their new music videos, but for the past months, I have skipped three songs in a row. I have told myself I need to get back and listent to them, but I have yet to do so... I really need to see what their ost recent songs are like (last one I kept up with was the Sekibanki song). Actually, I think I have barely listened to any Touhou music recently, the only saving saving grace being that I kept on listening to Ghostly Field Club and Changeability of Strange Dream. 4. I still have not got to finish (or even just play) any related game, be it official or fan-made This is something that I have also said at the end of last year, when I was writing the question if I am a bad fan of the series. The only game I have tried is Touhou 7, and I could even finish that one. SKILL ISSUES GALORE. I have not managed to find yet any fan game that I really wanted to play, and I do not know if Touhou LostWord really counts as an actual game (and not just a gambling machine masked as a Touhou game)... 5. I have lost a big art of my diligence in collecting things that I like In the past, I was always very curious and excited for whatever new Touhou fanart was being posted online. I used to collect them on a daily basis (which I am doing since December 2020), then I used to stored them on my Pinterest gallery (shameless plugin moment). However, despite the fact I am still doing it, I am just feeling less excited. I have better tools for finding more images, but it takes me more days until I actually send them to my favorites gallery. Until then, they are just clogging the tabs of the browser. Basically, what used to be a fun activity has become a chore. And I cannot just stop doing it, mostly due to FOMO (a general problem for me with anything Touhou related, and probably compatible with all of the points above). So, what is going on with me? Are those signs I am on the verge of dropping my position as someone who likes the series? Have I lost my passion for Touhou? Am I less and less interested for what is going on in the community? And even worse - what still keeps me as a Touhou fan? So many questions...

  31. This. So tired of seeing so called "Christians" that are forgetting one of their religion's main pillar: Forgiveness. It ain't just about sin & punishment, only extremist fools will think that way (unfortunately, some churches just LOVE using that to scare people into worship, since many are afraid of the afterlife and facing consequences, which in this case is "hell". Fortunatly, some churches actually help people into finding forgivness). Nobody is perfect 24/7, and nobody can expect anyone else being perfect. It's all a cycle: You live, you make mistakes (sins), you suffer from the consequence of your sin (therefor, it's your punishment), then you seek/ask for forgiveness if the burden is too great to bear alone. Then you continue to live, and strive to not make the same mistakes. Sinning without punishment means you do not realize your are making a mistake, and some punishment will inevitably "strike" you at some point (either you realize your mistake, or someone tells you). Punishment without forgiveness means you're standing still, hurting yourself without learning, growing and moving forward. Honestly, you're the only one to blame for "perverting" your perception of Touhou. How you live with that now is up to you (in other word, how you get forgiveness for that is up to you), but calling out others on doing the same like you did before is just being an hypocrite, and it won't remove the guilt you have, it will just make you feel worse because by judging others you are also judging yourself.

  32. Before going into Retrospective 2022 (either on the 31st December 2022 or first days of January 2023), there is one more thing I would like to talk about before the end of the year. This thread is going hand in hand with the one I have posed yesterday. Just before the end of the year, I would like to make both an evaluation of my place within the community and the situation of the regular Touhou fan that engages with the series in one way or another. I was thinking about tackling this question for about a couple months, after a series of weird events. Before going into the thread itself, what makes someone a Touhou fan? Is there such a thing as "fakers", or everyone has their own place? Think of it, then come back to the question once the journey through this thread is complete. So, how did we end up here? Somewhere in July, out of all places possible, I ended up finding another person who knew about Touhou in a Warhammer 40K channel of a Sci-fi Discord server (probably like 10-15K people). The guy was randomly posting a Touhou hijack every now and then, and once I did have the chance to catch it. During one of those hijacks, I was also around, and like the innocent fool I was, I pointed out "oh hey, that's Touhou, nice". Then, I did my big mistake: I said I am familiar with the series. Which spiraled him into asking me how many or which of the official games I have played. When my answer was none, and that I was struggling to finish PCB on Easy, all hell broke loose. "How can you call yourself a Touhou fan? How can you not even finish that game? It is so easy". I responded that I may have not finished any game yet, but at least I read from the official literature (at the time, Perfect Memento in Strict Sense and the first 4 volumes of Forbidden Scrollery), yet that was not enough to qualify me. Then he proceeded to talk about how much he played the games, saying that playing them is one of the qualifying factors. The discussion died off, at least for a few more months. At the middle of November, I caught another one of his hijacks in the Warhammer channel. At the time, I responded with this image, which I thought combined in a funny way the two fandoms (for context, Orin and Space Marin of the Iron Warriors legion acting as if he were her big brother): Art by BIGCAT_4424 (source: https://twitter.com/BIGCAT_4424/status/1267026103106965507) The image itself did not spark any negative reactions, but the guy went into a big rant again about the games, starting to judge categories, who is a real fan and who is not. Then this happened (I have censored names for the name of privacy): The video attachment he posted was an MP4 file of the video "ULTRA Instinct Junko is Born" by lunaPrism. And from there, the discussion died again. It was never brought again, and probably never will (hopefully) if I stay low. Besides, I can not do anything about it, or even just comment, since it would be basically me, a low-ranking member, again a Discord mod. Looking for some more information, I started talking to the other Touhou communities on the question of what makes you a fan of Touhou. The big Touhou server had a very civilized discussion with me, even if it was very late in night. Them , I tried asking the same question on the Moriya Shrine's Discord server. Oh boy... Besides people saying that the take of the mod was "based", they also guided me towards the following image. This, is surely an interesting take: Basically, they have told me I am bad fan, and people like me are one of the causes leading to the decrease in quality of the Touhou community. (slight slander towards the Moriya Shrine Discord server; that place has serious quality control problems when it comes to behavior) When I went back to the other Touhou server, and presented them this image as "the answer I got to the same question from another Touhou community", everyone was in shock. The reaction was quite poor towards the image. They just could not believe someone would even come up with this when answering to the question "am I a bad fan?". Everyone dismissed this image, and I was told not to worry about it. And from that point, I have thought a little bit about how to address this question. Now, coming to the person case - am I a bad fan? Originally, I have addressed this question ever since my early days in the fandom. I have eventually addressed the following text and question on r/touhou on the 8th December, 2021, just 1 year after getting into the series. This was my original text: And now, one year later, this is what the situation looks like, and what has changed: Canon: I am still struggling to finish PCB, but things are not going much better. The best I could achieve was the Prismriver sisters battle, but only after I used all the Continues (damn you, Stage 3 and first half of Stage 4). And that was on "Easy Modo" I have not advanced much more in reading Bohemian Archive, but I can say that I have briefly read through the characters section for Perfect Memento, as we well as briefly reading though multiple parts of Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia. Probably my greatest achievement however was finishing the first 5 volumes of Forbidden Scrollery, with two more to go in the following weeks hopefully. and not just read FS, but actually own physical copies of all the volumes. There is a funny anecdote that given the low supply here in Romania, I may have accidentally ended up buying the entire stock for the first 3 volumes from that manga (now even more so as I bough the final volumes). Before I ordered them, they were in Limited Edition. Now, they are in No Stock remaining: Along with Changeability of Strange Dream and Neo-traditionalism of Japan, I have finally added Ghostly Field Club to the list of CDs I have listened to (actually, right now I am listening to GFC again, since I like it very much). For the next year, I am planning to listen to the other music CSs as well (I may have already listened to CD 9.5, but I am not so sure how much it counts as an actual product and not just a glorified commercial) Fanon: The only fanon game I have constantly played still is Touhou LostWord I have a few more ideas for fan games, but I never ended up sticking with them. My Steam library has a section for free Touhou fan games, yet they still wait to be played. In it, there is stuff like Hina-Chan 2nd Break, Servants of Harvest Wish, Perfect Memento of Touhou Question and Touhou Mystery Reel. Out of all these titles, Touhou Mystery Reel is the only one I have actually played until now. And it convinced me of two things: 1) I suck at platform games and 2) I suck at fighting games. But more on that in my eventual discussion about looking for a Touhou themed game to enjoy... The music scene is just as rich as last year in my collection, even though through the year I have added a few more names like Komeiji Records, Konagusuri, Lyrica Live, Stringstorm (given he has started creating Touhou music), YaboiMatoi, Yuuhei Satellite, Demetori (even if I am still just scratching the surface) and UNDEAD CORPORATION, as well as the regular one-off song I might be listening to from one group or another (some of them discovered through the remix tournaments). My collection of fanart that I like from the community has increased, reaching nowadays an astonishing number of 23.8k pieces. On that note, I have recently created a new Pinterest page, CVN database, that will act as a way to more properly categorize Touhou images of different characters and the games they have come from... if I manage to sort out all that stuf, given the rapid pace in which the collection is growing My skills at creating Touhou fanart have not improved; I am still doing just as poor of a job and as little of a contribution to the fandom as before, if not worse than before I have finally finished watching Memories of Phantasm, and I actually even wrote an extensive review for it here at the Shrine. Next on my list, perhaps after a detour towards Amagami, shall be Hifuu Activity Club Record, simply because I want to see the interaction between Maribel and Renko, and the way it is depicted (I have already seen a couple short clips, and it seems to be quite sweet) My stance towards the way I interpret the characters has changed quite a bit; I have had a period in which I was more of a purist, then I started switching towards a more relaxed attitude. Now, I still prefer some of the canon depictions, while for some characters I tend to accept adding a bit of fanon as well, especially when I consider it to make sense/fir the character in question, still making the difference however (like having it clear in my mind that "this is ZUN canon" or "this is fan canon") I may have actually made a few bad decisions and stir up the lack of satisfaction of the Touhou community, especially in moments like that when I brought up the whole issue of the mountains of NSFW materials we have and the turning of the Touhou characters into mere "waifus to fap to" also in the meantime, I have become a member of this community; in the large scale, it may further bring me some hate due to the sheer association with the group and what Moriya Shrine is, and will always be known for - be the "pirate bay of Touhou" I may have also expanded a little bit into watching some of the...less than safe for work art of Touhou, but that one came mostly by extension since I am using Danbooru so much as my main search engine for Touhou art. It was a shock at the beginning (like for anyone who sees their favorite series being turned into something lewd, the first reaction is.. hard to describe), but in time, I have grown rather desensitized about it. For a better understanding of the situation: And this, kids, is a little bit more of a darker side of mine And for the final question... What really makes one a Touhou fan? Is there really such a thing as a wrong way to enjoy Touhou? Is there something that really makes you say "yeah, that guy is a real fan" or "no, he is not"? The discussion has always been going one way or another. At the beginning, I have had the bad experience of meeting people like BlankGuy... The ever-known "if you are only in for the girls, you are not a real Touhou fan; go play some waifu gacha instead" (unfortunately, the more relevant image was lost to time and files no longer embedding/working). On a surprising twist of fate, he seems to be having a change of heart after everything he did. Could this be genuine? I really hope so. However, I have seen that before with XG3E as well, and immediately afterwards, he ended going back to the customs of milking the "Touhou mommy" format he created/made popular. But, like the very naive person I am, I would really like to believe this is actually a change for the better, and that I could give him a second chance. (also oh no, he knows about some of my threads from the past. If things really have changed, I would like to apologize. It is just that some of the early claims really left a poor taste for some of the people) Good luck to him, and hope next time I will mention the name of BlankGuy, it will be in a positive context ... then there is this image talking about how the players of a specific Touhou fan game are not real Touhou fans (for context, LostWord player = fake Touhou fan)... ... and we are ending it with TheOVJM and his take on the same category of Touhou fans (and for a bonus already mentioned in the Google Doc thread) Anyway, some however say that anyone is welcome in the community, and as long as they enjoy any aspect regarding Touhou, you are part of the group. Some like the art, others enjoy playing the games or even like going for a challenge. Others have been attracted by the fan-games, or just love reading the official or fan-written manga. And some are just here for the porn. Given how vast Touhou is, there is something to satisfy everyone. Therefore, why are we so bothered calling people "primaries" and "secondaries" (terms which are still unironically used now, at the end of 2022)? Probably the best take I have heard until now in regards to the question has been that of the rising star in terms of Touhou lore content, GensouChronicle. Seriously, all my respect for the guy, he is doing such a great job covering a variety of topics, and I even made some references to him through the Memories of Phantasm review (spoiler: everyone is an S tier; in his eyes, everyone can be a Touhou fan) As a bonus, on a needlessly sensitive issue for the fandom, and a reason brought by some for branding people as real or fake fans (that of the Fumo and their recent rise in popularity), GensouChronicle had the following to say:

  34. That's very normal. Touhou only has so much official content (fan content mostly re-use official content, often in predictable ways so it's not as interesting) , and after almost 3 years you probably seen it all. Probably because every game/manga are just "incident of the week". Barely anything matter in the plot, so it's hard getting excited about "yet another incident". This is meant to be enjoyed casually, so you probably won't feel very "hyped". Take time to enjoy other series, and come back when you want a more relaxing and simple story. You know how many never even gave the games a chance? Don't force yourself if you don't like the gameplay, or stick to playing on Easy with Continues if you think you got skill issues, then move on from there to Easy 1CC, then Normal (since some game lock you out of the ending if you play on easy). Forget about Hard and Lunatic unless you really enjoy the game. Almost every game can be beaten very, well, easily on easy (10-11-12 are using the "bad" continue system, so use a patch if you don't want to repeat stages a lot). My personal recommendation is 7, since the "Cherry Border" give you a temporary shield you can use to practice dodging without worrying about getting hit. Well, being a "Touhou fan" isn't some kind of holy duty that you "have" to do. Touhou is just a multi-media series that you can enjoy or not. You don't have to like everything about it, and you don't have to always be talking about Touhou 24/7 (doing so makes for a pretty one-note and boring life). Just go with how you fell. You like it and are curious to discover more? Continue on ahead. Feeling like you've seen enough and want to move to the next thing? Go ahead, there's no Touhou police that's going to prevent you from doing so. There's no prestige to gain in enjoying something, only personal fun.

  35. For these kinds of situations, I don't recommend overthinking because it could give the opposite effect of what you want. I found out about Touhou in 2019, which is when I created an account in Moriya Shrine (despite only started talking here recently). I became very obsessed with the games and played them a lot, but then years later, in 2022, I started not caring as much about Touhou, so I just took a break until I truly felt like I wanted to play again, and so I returned to the games. You can take a break and focus on something else, and come back later and realise that now you are much more interested in the series after the break, or you could give the official games another chance, since you said you only played th7.

  37. GRAGAGAGAGA I LOVE UFO I LOVE UFO- As you can tell, I really like this game, and while it's not my absolute favorite in the series, it does come close, so I'm probably just going to spend this entire post gushing about how great it is. Starting with the gameplay, Undefined Fantastic Object finally gets rid of the godawful power bomb system introduced in MoF and returns to having a dedicated bomb gauge, as well as introducing a new UFO system, where certain enemies will drop colored UFOs that fly around on the screen for a while, and can be picked up by touching them. When you pick up a UFO, it's added to your collection at the bottom left corner of the screen, with a maximum of three slots to keep them in, and if you can get three UFOs all in the same color, a giant one will appear at the top of the screen, remaining there for exactly ten seconds. This big UFO will consume any power and point items dropped by enemies, and once it's consumed enough, it'll drop a resource of some kind (a fifth of an extra life if it's red, a bomb if it's green, and points if it's blue), and will also drop the same kind of resource if the player can shoot it down in time. Alright, here's why this mechanic absolutely slaps and I love it. It mainly comes down to the extra depth it adds to the game, as well as the extremely fast pace it creates; most UFOs change color every few seconds, going from red to blue to green and then back to red, so if a UFO is of the color you want, you need to get to it quickly, incentivizing the player to zoom across the entire screen at all times. Additionally, there's also a nice sense of player freedom in which UFOs you want to go for; I usually just go for the red ones, since I like having the game be extra challenging with a lot of chances to mess up as opposed to being easier but with more punishment for when you do get hit, but if you'd rather stockpile bombs, or go for a high score, you can do that as well. Admittedly, I do think the blue UFOs just giving you points was a missed opportunity, as high score only means anything to a select few players as opposed to lives and bombs which are going to be useful no matter who you are, but I'm not really sure what else they could have been, so it's not a huge issue. Mainline Touhou, for me, is at its most enjoyable when it's encouraging you to move fast, and giving you a lot of opportunities to grab extra lives (but still expecting you to go out of your way for them, as opposed to in some games where they're just a thing that happens) in exchange for extra-challenging bullet hell, and thanks to the UFO system, this game is the absolute peak of that. I think on a pure gameplay level, this is my absolute favorite game in the entire series, even if there is one game in particular that I haven't gotten to yet which just barely ranks higher than it for me overall. Anyway, moving on from gameplay, the story of the game revolves around the expedition by Murasa, Shou, Nazrin and Ichirin into Makai to free Byakuren Hijiri, a Buddhist nun who was sealed away by humans a thousand years ago for her kindness towards youkai, the previously mentioned four all being youkai she helped at some point; aside from Nazrin, she was just sent by the god Bishamonten to help Shou specifically. Noticing the youkai's strange flying ship in the sky, the player's chosen character, either Reimu, Marisa, or in her first playable appearance, Sanae, decides to go and give it a look, for one reason or another. Some stuff happens, and eventually, the main character ends up freeing Byakuren by themselves, and after this, Byakuren is allowed to return to Gensokyo alongside the youkai who went to save her after all this time, and creates the Myouren Buddhist temple. After the events of the main game, though, Reimu/Marisa/Sanae are still curious about just what those UFO things that seemed to be everywhere were, so they investigate and find that they were actually fragments of a flying vault that were disguised as UFOs by Nue Houjuu, a youkai who was sealed underground but later released thanks to Okuu's actions in Subterranean Animism (loving the continuity between games here), and then decided to get a little silly just for the fun of it and make everyone think the fragments of the flying vault were UFOs. I personally quite like this story. Having covered each mainline game one by one through this series, I've noticed that this seems to be the point where Touhou stories start to have a little more to them than before, with a few more characters actually getting to do things that are directly relevant to the story in some way; EoSD had 1, Remilia, PCB and IN had 2 each, Yuyuko/Yukari and Eirin/Kaguya, PoFV had 2, Komachi and Eiki, and MoF/SA had 1 each, Kanako and Utsuho. UFO, by comparison, has 4, those being Nazrin (found the jewelled pagoda necessary to free Byakuren), Murasa (captain of the flying ship that sailed into Makai), Shou (brought the jewelled pagoda into Makai) and Nue (disguised pieces of the flying vault as UFOs); you can argue it actually has 5 if you count Byakuren, given that she's the whole reason anything here is even happening and creates the Myouren Temple at the end of the game, but during the main story she doesn't directly do anything by herself, so I didn't include her in the list. Regardless of if you count her or not, my point is that this is the first time more than 2 characters have had a direct role in the events of the game beyond simply helping someone else do stuff, like Sakuya or Reisen in previous games. Despite the game's relatively simple story, this still helps it feel like it has a bit more going on than previous games, a trend that continues to varying extents throughout future games, which I enjoy a lot. It's not particularly exceptional, but it's still on the upper end of Touhou stories for me, something which is definitely helped by its excellent cast of characters. I'm actually not sure which Touhou game has my favorite cast of characters, but this is definitely one I'd consider if I had to make that choice. Everyone here (except Ichirin) appeals to me on some level; Nazrin is admittedly a little carried by NYN memes for me, but I like her design, Kogasa is funny, Murasa and Shou just generally have really cool designs and I enjoy their vibes a lot, Byakuren is just eh here but I like her a lot in AoCF (I do love how she has a direct reference to one of Shinki's spellcards here though, that was a pleasant surprise when I first fought her), and Nue's design combined with her really just being a silly little gremlin creature who enjoys getting up to mischief makes her my favorite of this game's cast. Admittedly, I do kind of despise Ichirin, but that's more because she doesn't do anything for me personally and I'm annoyed she got the character slot in the more recent trilogy of fighting games instead of literally anyone else from this game, as opposed to it being down to any actually unlikeable traits she has herself, so I won't pretend she's poorly written or at all unlikeable by herself. While there's not a single character here that I'd personally consider a series favorite, or even a top 10, I like nearly everyone here enough that it's one of the most consistent casts in the series for me, and I don't think the fact there's only one single character introduced here that I don't actively enjoy to some extent is something that can be applied to any other game in the series, so credit where credit is due. This game also managed to give Sanae a personality, something which from what I've seen no other game in the series has managed to do, so I can appreciate its character writing for that as well. Lastly, I want to briefly talk about the game's soundtrack, or more accurately, one song in particular. The whole soundtrack is great, don't get me wrong (Captain Murasa is especially a banger), but there's not much I have to say about most of it... except for Fires of Hokkai. After the extremely chaotic but enjoyable stage 5, and the similarly hectic battle with Shou, stage 6 is comparatively easy, representing a slightly bizarre sense of calm as you finally reach the place where Byakuren has been sealed away for all this time, and Fires of Hokkai does an excellent job at enhancing the vibe stage 6 goes for, so I feel like that one in particular is worth mentioning by itself. Come to think of it, the dynamic between stage 5 and 6 here kind of reminds me of Mystic Square's fifth and sixth stages, which makes me wonder if it was partially an intentional reference to that game or if it's just a coincidence, but given the previously mentioned Shinki spellcard reference, I lean towards thinking it's the former. Overall, Undefined Fantastic Object is a great and extremely fun game, being by far my favorite of the second Windows era, and it's one of the ones I come back to the most of any game in this series. I honestly can't think of a single thing I don't like about it, which isn't something I can say of most of this series, and I think it's definitely worth playing if you somehow haven't already.

  38. The way the term "fic" was brought about here doesn't mean yukayay is attacking a fanfic made by RoboticSquire, it means they're criticizing the strange way they went about criticizing the character of marisa because she's a witch by concept or something. I suspect this is the thread that talks about this: As for your question, Squire. You're an young and impressionable person, and I'm sure you still have much to learn in your life. But if there's one thing the Bible teaches us, is that we should treat others with respect and dignity, regardless of who they are. Let people live the way they want to live, accept others for who they are, be understanding, cool your jets. This will come a long way into making your interpersonal relationships healthier, regardless of your beliefs. A pretty quick way to earn other people's animosity is antagonizing them by who they are and what they like constantly.

  39. I'm just gonna go ahead and shoot down this line of thinking immediately, and loudly for everyone in the back: Yes, you can be a Touhou fan and not play the games. Touhou Project is more than just a few space shooters. You've got fangames that cover pretty much every genre imaginable, tons of printworks (both official and doujin), full-blown anime made by some seriously dedicated fans, on top of the years and years worth of fan art and fan music. That is Touhou Project. Sorry if that's not exactly what your post was trying to ask about, but considering the fact that gatekeeping is a real thing, I don't want to leave any ambiguity on this. There is nothing wrong with deciding that the games aren't really your thing and just enjoying Touhou for the stuff you actually like. I wouldn't blame you in the slightest for not being "interested" in the shoot-em-up games. I also had a time when I was getting into Touhou, so I tried the official games, and I did have a good time with them. I had fun. A lot of fun, even. It was during a time when I specifically wanted to play something simple and arcade-y and I didn't mind that I was going through the same motions over and over again to try and get a little further than before. But, my tastes changed over time. I wanted to try something new, and moving from Touhou 7 to Touhou 8 isn't gonna give me that new experience I was craving. Now I only go back to them every now and then when I find myself in that certain "Touhou" kind of mood, and there's nothing wrong with that. So no, don't feel like playing the official games is some kind of necessity for keeping your membership card. If you feel like picking them back up, do it. And if you don't, then don't. The important thing is making sure you're enjoying yourself in whatever area of the fandom you're spending your time with.

  40. Looks like this has turned into a trilogy (lol). Finally, a conclusion after two threads and a port to r/touhou. This time, in order to bring multiple points of view, therefore presenting the view of the Touhou community itself on such issues like mature content, I will present their answers the very way they were posted. There have been more than 200 comments, but I will most likely pick the ones that are actually pertinent and fir the topic at hand. In some points, if the opinion is interesting, I will probably add my own comments. But before that, my personal conclusion to the Touhou fans that have shown to be extremely horny and depraved from their very nature: "No anon, your waifu doesn't love you or as you go out with her, or go into any sort of romantic confession to a complete foreigner. No anon, your waifu will not allow or want you touch her in inappropriate places. No anon, your waifu will not beg you have sex with her" Credit for this image: https://www.reddit.com/r/touhou/comments/qpy018/satori_reads_your_mind_parody_of_fusus_work/ People are generally horny, Touhou fans included. Which might explain the hundreds of videos from past 6 months that go into horny, cookie-cutter format and use cropped hentai or Fusu images for thumbnail. "Touhou /x character fans be like". As for Fusu himself, I guess the dislike for his art might also be reinforced, like others pointed out, about how his art switched in the past months from the confession type (the ones posted on this subreddit last year) + "sexy times" (badically part 2 of the confession images) to just the latter. If one has the "keep out R18 content" filters activated, they will not be aware of that entire side of the author. But if you go to somewhere like Danbooru, you will see. And oh boy, at least 10 continuous pages of hentai (which also has amorous confessions) followed by starting to see again the (safe for work) art + "part 2" really is an experience... With this part solved, now on with the actual comments: 99% of Touhou characters are made up of girls. And it is a very popular franchise amongst male gamers. Put 2 and 2 together and... well, this is the result. For me, I've never really looked up hentai artwork of my favorite characters before. When I like a character, it's the personality that comes into mind, not appearance. Sex is popular in general. "Chastity is the greatest form of perversion." - A certain sexologist. I highly agree with that quote because people should not be ashamed or be shamed for liking sex. It's part of our nature. People who hate sex most likely have a sex disorder anyway and they don't even know it's an illness... Anyway, moving on. I think Touhou H artworks are so popular because of... copyright in Japan?... ZUN was more open about people using his content to make other content, like how Fair Use law works in the West. Creators like ZUN, whose works became hugely popular are rare. I'm sure most Japanese artists wouldn't want to to touch other series in fear of getting sued the shit out of them-- that's how obsolete Japanese copyright laws are; they don't recognize Fair Use. TL; DR It's the popularity. The real thing here is "why do fanworks turn to smut so often?" and I offer no explanation for it. It's just an old known phenomenon. Most damningly, given the actual thing above, Touhou actually has less mature content than most other popular series, as measured by me, right now, looking at Pixiv post counts: The procedure for all the data below is the same: I took the 10 most popular "copyright" tags at danbooru.us to get a list of "what's popular in the West". Then I went to pixiv.net and searched the main tag for each series, and then redid the search adding the term "R-18", which is the Japanese code for "mature work". I took note of the search results and calculated the "mature ratio" for each series. Touhou has the second smallest ratio, with only Vocaloid having less mature content. (Arknights) 155.213 17.391 11.20% So, the whole point of this essay is moot. Touhou is NOT "so popular in terms of mature content". People want to lewd idols, battleships and genderbent historical figures more than the youkai. Count's comment: Honestly, I am quite impressed. Especially about the fact the person making the comment has gone through all this just to make the analysis. Thank you for the clarification on that side, as I always had the impression the numbers are much higher then in reality. It is still interesting though why Touhou is discussed so often for its adult works by those outside the community despite the fact, like you said, that it has much less compared to other big series. All I can do right now is appreciate the effort you have gone through for that results. Really it's all about doujin culture. People make stuff they like, and sell it to basically spread it. I remember reading that in the 90s that Castlevania doujinshi that focused on the female monsters became the inspiration for the monster musume genre that emerged in the 2000s. Basically anything that can be sexualized(or at least made into moe characters and then sexualized) can be. WWII warships? Kantai Collection. 70s mecha anime? Robot girls Z. Regular animals? Kemono Friends. You can find adult doujinshi for all those. I've been to Comiket 3 times, and found a lot of stuff that blew my mind. I saw a Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles BL book(BL meaning Boy's love, basically male homosexual relationships aimed toward female readers. This is distinct from bara/gay manga that are for homosexual men). The proportions of adult to general audience books are around 60-40 depending on the particular title, and I didn't notice what got more adult or general over the other too much. You can't get rid of one without basically halving the number of titles available. And further more for the sex ratio for adult parody doujinshi the proportion that were women were around a fourth to a third. Add to that the nearly female only BL area and Comiket is a mostly female event. As to how accepting the Japanese can be of adult material, yeah, that's foreign to you. Japan's opinion on free expression is a strange mix of European and American attitudes, that has genitals partially covered but the actual sexual material can get very wild. Not to mention that a large female cast can attract a lot of people for different things, be it chaste or sexual. In the world of doujin any number of stories can be told with these characters that people have affection for. Essentially for stories Japanese just make them. Now they do have concerns about various consequences from their stories, but they don't try to censor themselves if what they make won't gather a hate mob to harass them. As to people making secondary works that are sexual, that's the doujin artists and not ZUN. And if people still don't like it then I don't really care because people like that are difficult to interact with I first really got into Touhou from erodoujinshi, basically I downloaded a pack of them and read it, and wondered about these characters and the world they lived in. I got into the games and basically bought them. I picked up 8 of the games while I was living in japan as to basically have a show of support for the series. I bought a lot of doujinshi, both adult and general audience, over there as well. I really don't follow the community here. To be honest most of the posts I see don't interest me, I usually just upvote art that I like. If there's an influx of newbies then I haven't noticed. And if they don't care for adult content, then fine they don't have to interact with it. If they still think poorly of Touhou after that, then whatever, I don't care. That's a really interesting read. I want to say that Touhou in Japan for a long time is the largest fandom in doujin world. It's always in the top 3 only sometime lose to Kancolle, FGO, or Idol Master. The reason there's alot of erodoujin it's probably because there is alot of touhou doujin in the first place. Also Touhou is really old and sold as a doujin in the first place, ZUN also give freedom to write his character in doujin as long as there is no spoiler to the ending. This could be another reason why it's easier to write an ero doujin knowing that the creator give consent to write it. Also while I doubt Touhou is this big because ero content alone it's still a big part why it's still relevant to this day. Touhou is still big because doujin and most sold doujin is ero content. If you read some old SFW Touhou doujin there some who change to draw r-18 in recent doujin. Reason is there more people want NSFW rather SFW. Of course the doujin music is another big part why Touhou still relevant today. I do think NSFW doujin and doujin music is both the biggest part why Touhou is big so I do understand why in the second discussion OP post why some people think it's weird that some people genuinely hate over-sexualisation of Touhou characters. I do hope if people hate it they just ignore it or just block the artist rather than mock, bashing or something worse to the artist. And for OP second question "Why is R18 art so appealing?" honestly I never think of it. I just took it for granted that R-18 stuff is appealing. I just think some art is erotic and that's it. I can explain why it's erotic, but why it's appealing I don't know. I guest society already make it's the norm and most people never question it. If you raise in a religious house hold or something similar you probably think R-18 stuff is unappealing. Finally I want to say the faceless thing is something you will see a lot in doujinshi especially if the doujin involve having romantic relationship with the girl. This is not only in NSFW doujin but SFW doujin as well. The faceless man is to make it easier for reader to self insert as. Japan is really big in creating self insert story for some reason, maybe it's escapism but it's something not exclusive for Touhou. This also the reason why isekai and other self fulfilling story have the same generic black hair protagonist. Also apply to POV stories as well. Count's comment (this went on as an actual discussion): "If you raise in a religious house hold or something similar you probably think R-18 stuff is unappealing." This one hits quite close to home for me. I was not brought up in exactly the most religious of families, but they still had religious views in accordance to our Greek Orthodox view (I think I may have pointed sometime in the past that I hail from Romania, a country that still has deeply rooted religious and traditionally conservative views). Anything R-18 was pretty much received as a sin, and something one should stay as far as possible from, and even mentioning the topic was/still is very much a taboo. In school, religious education is a thing, and anatomy classes, despite having an entire dedicated chapter for sexual education and reproduction, completely avoid the topic (my teacher literally skipped that whole course-book chapter). Combining these elements of upbringing, one gets to the age of 20 and still feeling a strong sense of guilt even for seeing the slightest but of NSFW materials, who is very confused about these sort of materials, and pretty much way too shy to speak up even to his parents looking for advice (last time I tried, it did not not end very well, and ever since I never brought up the subject ever again). Not to say that never having been in a relationship makes you pretty much have a lot of unanswered questions. Thanks as well for the thread OP, I also come from a country with deeply rooted religious views (Indonesia) and R-18 is also treat it as taboo or sin so I can kinda see why you think like that. It's just my friend circle is a manga/anime fan as well so while not all of them ok with stuff like that most of them are not repulsive to R-18 stuff. I do though sometime meet someone like you who is not fine with R-18 stuff it's just not in Touhou fandom or any Japanese media. Though I do hope if you don't like stuff like this you just ignore it as most artist is pretty good in either hide their NSFW stuff or give warning that they do NSFW stuff. Count's comment: Here is the thing. Due to my early upbringing, I used to hate them almost mechanically, without actually thinking why I hate the. Now, when I started to think more by myself, I started to question if I actually have a dislike for such content. Nowadays, i would probably say that there are a few things I might actually say I appreciate. Especially when R-18 does not only mean porn, but also anything which includes artistic nudity in non-sexual connotations at all. An artistic nude in good taste is something I actually do appreciate, even if I might feel too shy to accept it. It's still something I would rather keep for myself though. I do have a few things I appreciate when it comes to this sort of art, especially if the artist is good. In the final part of the OP, I did talk a bit about how my mind changed following the discovery of Danbooru, going for complete intolerance of such art to accepting a number of things based on a few personal tastes. Just because an artist also draws NSFW stuff, it really does not diminish their value as artists. Actually, if their stuff is good enough, I might actually keep it in count next time I check again that artist. I do understand that like even some of the most obscene stuff I seen I can apreciate it either by the creativity or the quality of the art. I especially like it if their work has a distinctive artstyle and I can know who the artist is with just a glance of their work like Zounose, Yassy, or Frogsnake. The last two while drawing some of the most obscene and NSFW stuff I ever seen they draw it in a way that I never see other artist do and also create a story that is unique to them and I like them for it. Some NSFW artist also draw good SFW work, like the author of Mamange doujin who while drawing R-18 Youmu x Reisen doujin also draw a wholesome doujin about Reisen raising the rest Eientei girl as a kid. Personally this is why I love Touhou, I don't know any media who have this much variety in fan content as much as Touhou ranging from really obscene stuff that I can never show to my friend to really wholesome stuff that everyone can apreciate it. There something for everyone and I love Touhou for this. I would consider myself a regular consumer of touhou porn. Whenever I feel like I got nothing to do, I'd get an urge to go jack off to some porn. So what I'd usually do is pull out my phone, go to rule 34 or danbooru and type in the name of a touhou character; usually reimu or marisa gets entered into the search bar and occasionally sanae or sakuya gets typed in, when I'm feeling extra horny on a particular day. The reason why I choose to look up touhou porn in particular, over other types of erotic content, is mostly because I am already familiar with the characters. Because of this familiarity, it makes searching for porn much more convenient for me. The familiarity I have with the characters isn't built from the official games at all; it's mostly built on top of non-official works. For example, while playing lost word, I found out that reimu, marisa and sanae fit into the category of girls that I'm into. In other words, I found out through consuming fan works that they're 'my type'. Both in terms of personality and looks. Then, those two characters would stay in the back of my mind. As I get to know more about the fandom, the stronger the characters' presence in my head. Then, when I sit down to jack off, they're the ones that come to mind first. You know how your youtube recommended section is filled with videos you've watched before? When it comes to choosing a search term for rule34, the names of touhou characters shows up in my head's 'recommended' section. Since they're the ones that come to mind first, that's what I'll look up. It then becomes a cycle. From the first moment I looked up reimu's name on rule34, I was hooked on touhou porn. I liked what I saw, so I looked up the names of more touhou characters. As I continued to consume, the more 'stuck' I became in touhou porn. It took me quite a bit of introspection to write this: if it weren't for this post, I wouldn't be questioning my porn consumption habits. Count's comment: reading this again, it sounded an awful lot like copypasta. Reading again the ending, it makes me feel it is not 100% copypasta, but maybe 99%. Anyway, an insight I guess... "don't draw them minor-looking; it feels wrong (also probably related to a recent preference for older/more mature characters)". Just so you know, the majority of the cast, including Reimu and Marisa, are canonically LOLIS. Cute and funny lolis. Please stop trying to force artists to draw off-model renditions of 2hus just because you can't handle the cunny. You spoke the truth and they hid your comment. Cowardice. Redditors fear the truth. That's why they feed each other regurgitated opinions in their echo chamber subreddits all day long Count's comment: ok...? WTF did I just read? Thy killed him because he said the truth I read the half of your post, must say you did a good research about characters popularity in mature content. I have seen ton of high effort sfw and nsfw art since I browsed the internet and dived into that rabbit hole in the past. No offense way to much for me to read. But my biggest thoughts in the quantity of touhou erotica is likely due to Zun’s extremely hands off stance on what the community is allowed to do. When you mix that with the idea that most of the community is both free to and actively gaining new members because if said erotic content. It makes sense that it’d create an indefinite cycle. I for one know that it was the music that got me into the series. But I can’t deny the erotica had a large impact. Anyway thanks for coming to my Ted talk. Also, I completely agree on the part where you make a distinction between nude art and porn, the intention of the artist are what define the type of work they make and their audience. If i could draw i would definitely draw a couple of nude or just half nude touhous, but that wouldn't be for erotic purposes, i just like the woman anatomy (except some parts, especially the low one...) and i would not add those artwork to my gallery or portfolio because i know for sure that a lot of people would misunderstand or just not understand my intentions behind it, and i care about this, i am jealous of that i make it it still would tilt me if people used my work for wanking. I am glad that someone sees it about the same way as me. Count's comment (downvoted to absolute 0): I think this is a very important distinction to be made, especially since there are people who put those two in the same pot, without thinking there's any difference. I personally find it much easier to enjoy an artistic nude done in good taste (as much as there cam be) then a piece of porn. Also pretty much the same when it comes to the gallery/portfolio part. Well for one thing I'm japanese and so I know quite a but about like japanese culture. I went to a Japnese secondary school until Middle school 2nd year and visited Japan and am basically a Japanese person, even though i was born in america. And so anyway with that out of the way, I didn't really read the whole post but i have a general idea of what you're saying. In Japan it's pretty common for kids to be like really perverted, but I suppose it's that way in a lot of places. And I guess some people just don't grow up, and kinda just hide their extreme pervertedness and kinda shelter themselves from society, and no shade to Touhou fandom but I'm pretty sure thats what a lot of the Touhou fanbase in Japan that cares like you know a lot about the characters they have all this time on their hands so they draw Touhou hentai lol. But, that's just my perspective as a japanese-american who basically grew up as a japanese kid. This is a popular series that has been carried by the numerous amount of fan work and is populated almost exclusively by various designs of female characters... And you question the possibility of the creation of R18 art and stories? Apologies, but to me that feels like handing a man a loaf of bread and ingredients and questioning why he made sandwiches. Your research is incredible and I value all of your efforts. I do not wish to demean your extensive research, however sometimes you just need to return to a root cause of why any R18 art or story happens in the first place. People get lonely and horny. When this happens, if they have a modicum of creative talent, they will do everything to make their lives less tragically empty by creating these pieces to satiate their inane and primal desires. Is a lot of it wrong and unfounded in the grand scheme of things? Yes! Without a doubt. Will it ever stop? Sadly no. Sometimes people never break up with their own fantasies. Your essay is worthy of a thesis, my friend. You've gone farther into the Lunar rabbithole than any man, woman, or what have you would even dare to fathom. In your search, you may have lost sight of a very simple answer, and that is that people have desires and will find ways to fulfill them. I thank you for your time and research, and I wish you a wonderful rest of your day. I skimmed through the entire post so I may have potentially missed someone mentioning this but my opinion is that it's based on three things. 1. Characters are generously clothed originally than most franchises and that's why it's more appealing. It reminds me of how Japan fetishized "Absolute territory" because the thought of seeing that smaller area of skin compared to seeing knee or ankle length socks is more arousing. For the 2hu equivalent, Reimu's armpits come to mind. I'd say this is the reason why full blown hentai games in this era aren't seeing as much fanart. When all the characters are already R18-fied, what's there more to draw? Dohna Dohna, Kuroinu are some of the good art H-media that comes to mind but you don't see that many fanart of them whether it be SFW or NSFW. Now I know someone might reply to me with Fate series being hentai visual novel too but they are still massively popular in doujins and you're correct but let me get to my other points too. 2. It's the fact that the (older) original drawings are quite bad that draws more artists to it. Think about it from an artist perspective. You just saw this badly drawn art and you know that no matter how or what style you draw the art of this same character in, you know you will easily top it. This allows for a wide spread of variety where you won't have most fans disagreeing with your art for "not drawing the character properly" unlike some people on Genshin Twitter for drawing the characters a smidge too tall/short or god forbid change their cup sizes. Thus artistic freedom is introduced but it doesn't just end there. This huge gap in artstyle (especially if its really good) plays on the natural human instinct of liking things that make you go "Woah that looks SOOO different than the original" trope. It's the reason why a nerd girl becoming sexy is popular. The reason why One Punch Man after reading its redrawn just makes you feel so good. And the reason why Sanic or Uganda Knuckles is so popular (though in its case, it's the reverse where it went from good to bad). But while something going from good to bad art makes its so much more memeable (Gyate Gyate, Yukkuri, etc) it's not exactly fappable. Bad to good however is. This now brings us to Fate again because this applies to the older Fate H games because despite the game being H, it has an arguably bad art with multiple characters sharing very similar facial features. 3. So OK we got the two main ingredients on why 2hu loods are popular. But why 2hu specifically? Why isn't a random Deviant artist taking off despite them fulfilling the first two criteria with their "Do not steal OCs?" It's the freedom that ZUN gives the artists and this is also mentioned by many already. But more importantly, its how popular it has become as well. Touhou has been here for a REALLY long time for as long as the Internet took off and it had the ability to cement itself and give itself a head-start popularity over other newer franchises. This leads into another human psyche where humans are generally attracted to popularity. Why does a few seconds of celebrity nude pic/vid leaks garnering so much more attention than full on sex pornstars? Popularity. The thought of a popular celebrity doing something lood excites many people no matter how tame it is compared to the other pre-existing loods. Anyway there are obviously many more variables but I think these three are the main contributors. Very SFW designs = More incentive to lood them. Badly drawn originals = More incentive to draw in artists. Game is already popular enough along with the birth of the internet allowing it to attract newer fans and artist who later stay for points 1 and 2. I think most people that read Touhou porn are not Touhou fans. There’s a big misconception in the anime circles that read a lot of hentai doujins that “Touhou is a hentai franchise” or whatever. I think this is just a case of people who don’t know Touhou, looking at fanart of Touhou, thinking they’re hot, then drawing hentai of them for an audience that usually are in it for the porn & not in it for the characters. The fact that Touhou is actually really big in Japan in terms of “doujin culture” for a VERY long time explains why there’s a lot of hentai doujinshis of it. It’s really not that deep. It’s just ppl that like hentai reading a bunch of hentai. And a bunch of independent artists seeing a popular franchise that allows you to easily create & sell fanworks of, making porn of that franchise for profit over the literal decades Touhou has been a popular & well-known cultural icon in Japanese Otaku culture. Touhou is just really popular in Japan. There’s a lot of fanworks based off of it which can be easily sold. Its got a bunch of female characters. Of course there’s gonna be a lot of porn based off of it. Count's comment: As for the "Touhou is a hentai franchise" part, I actually remember meeting people who had no idea what the series really is about saying that, probably based on some random lewd fanart seeing online with the "Touhou" tag strapped to it. I guess it's just people only scratching surface level and not really going to actually see what the franchise is about. Alright i'll try to answer you bit by bit, for "scientific" purpose ("scientific" guys c'mon) "Why is Touhou so prolific when it comes to R18 materials?" - already answered in the comments above (absolute freedom of expression given to the artists) You answer it yourself, it's simple really because they're allowed to, same with making porn out of real life character, you have to ask their consent about it ( if you know about the drama with Shadman and Keemstar's daughter, that's how not to do porno contents ). ZUN gave the pass so people just do it. Now, for the second question, hopefully better formulated this time: Why is R18 art so appealing? What is the thing that makes people like seeing their favorite characters in compromising poses, or having intercourse with a strange, faceless man? The faceless man is usually one of those things I found freaky. Why? Because one explanation for why people are usually faceless in such images/manga in the following: in order to make self-inserting possible. Basically, the idea is for you to be able to imagine yourself being the one making love with your favorite character. I can accept wholesome, consensual acts being depicted (I don't care if it's straight or yuri as long as there is some common sense), but at least please give those men some faces. It's the fetish and fantasy aspect, the simple describing i can give you is this, ever felt like when you hit puberty you look at a girl and be like "I wanna do wholesome thing to her like hugging and holding hand" but the thought of wanting to see her "naked and freaky" also exist? Yeah that's why. As for the need of the man in that fantasy to have a face, it doesn't have to, after all it's the fantasy and people tend to not want to self-insert them into those fantasy/fetish ( because they're aware it's weird, can you walk into a guy face and say "I want to fuck Reimu's armpit" unironically? Yep) they can just imagine the faceless guy is them. Now for the specific girl part: "Sanae did get some sort of "fanservice" reputation in the fandom, and I do not understand the reason why. Many people I ask refer to her as "Reimu, but fanservice", "Reimu, but with boobs" or simply as "doujin fam". Did this come to be just because of one doujin in which Sanae is called a "good girl"? Even the wiki mentions that doujin when referring to her fanon material." That but also in the canon, Sanae is from the Outside World (equivalent to our real life) before moving into Gensokyo with Suwako and Kanako so Sanae is like the closest you can get to a girl who live in a modern society like us. And this allow artist to depict her more freely, not just limited to the miko attire. "I am not very sure how Eirin got so high on her spot, even if it is just percentage-wise. Maybe he fact she might be as old as the world and her more womanly look have been a factor to ensure people they will not just end up drawing CP? (it is not like like Eirin is usually placed in the "old ladies club" of Gensokyo)" Memorable fight also lorewise she's the old and wise one (Brain of the Moon after all) help cater to people with older ladies taste couple with being a doctor (cater to the nurse/doctor outfit fetish too) Byakuren is interesting. I can imagine that her biker outfit from the fighters was a boost to this, but I am not sure how far you can actually go from that towards proper R-18 material. Yes the tight biker suit is why, also she has pretty signature hair and that's that. I also have one theory is that there're fetish that like to break stoic/righteous girl to debauchery giving that Byakuren is devoted to Bhuddism this could be the case. Reisen is probably another one of the more (in)famous cases. I know she is a bunny girl and all, therefore fanservice and smut fuel. An for further reference, I even did get a bit into the famous "Drunkards in Eintei" doujin, from where we got the famous "I'm just a useless little bunny, only good for my sex appeal", in order to see what gave people the decision to feature her so much in smut. It is funny how one simple line in a doujin just encouraged the tendency of having Reisen featured in H-doujins and art. Bunny girl + vest + skirt, do i need to say more, that's one hell of a combination, the possibilities bruddah. About Ran Yakumo, I am not very sure what to say. Probably association with Kitsune usually shaping as attractive women? Also the fanon meme of the "suppatenko" (exhibitionist Ran) or something... Fox girls and also she has Chen as her shikigami so it's open up to express her motherly trait in fanfiction (and sure as hell people love it, Fia in Elden Ring if you wanna know) Yorihime & Toyohime - I am honestly amazed they even get H-material, given how unpopular they are in the fandom. Maybe it is more about revenge stuff (not gonna mention the r-word) and that 1% made out of Fusu art (gonna get there soon)? Canonically they have children and is overqualified as MILF (do i need to say more?) Patchouli - probably coming from an interesting concept we, humans, have created - "the forbidden fruit". In this case, the principle is simple: the more clothes a character has on, covering everything, the greater the desire to see them without those clothes. This principle might work on all 2hus, given how much ZUN likes covering them with as much clothing as possible. And since Patchouli has all those robes on her...it becomes obvious. Is this how it works, or logic leaves me on this one? You're correct but it also has to do with reserved/bookworm girl tend to held back their sexual urge or feelings (nerd girl i think idk) matching both appearance and personality. There's also this trope of Asschouli but idk. Yuugi - really not sure what to say on her. Big buff woman, I guess? Muscle mommy, period. Yukari - the reasons seem to be obvious. However, I cannot really come up with them right now. A bit of help? Besides her "hag" status, her ability to manipulate border meaning you can get really creative with her in your fantasy, also her fight is memorable in 7. Sakuya - a bit and not so surprising at the same time to be in the category of characters with so much "saucy" works around her. How did this come to be? Is i a mutation of the pads meme? The only one such work I know is the one about Sakuya getting stuck through a wall (typical H-trope from what I can see - how do people even manage to get half stuck into something, especially a wall?) and people doing...stuff to her. She's a maid (maid fetish) and she's a direct reference to Jojo (specifically Dio), also has one the most memorable remix (Night of Night) which boost her popularity even more. Aya(yayaya) - look who fate has turned on... The one character fans tend to portray as a pervert taking panty shots has become victim herself of perversion (I am totally not paid by Hatate to say this). Anyway, interesting to see her placed so high on the top. Guess protagonist + nice design + already established fanon? She has a bit of monster girl design (wings), also people love to have a waifu who is also a bit of a troublemaker (in a harmless way of course) I will place Iku and Raiko together, since what I am going to say is mostly identical. None of them is very popular in terms of character. However, it is truly a surprise to see them ranking so high in terms of percent compared to other characters. They are also in my list of favorite characters, and so got my attention. I guess Raiko still has the fact she is a redhead going for her to motivate such "artistic" works. My take is that Iku relationship with Tenshi in the canon has that sort of like a "guardian" so people can express trait of caring and motherly for her. As for Raiko, she's the few of the girl in the series with modern depiction so it's interesting to see it at least. Keine - seriously, what can I say about her? I really have no idea. Memorable EX-boss fight and i guess people like girl who has multiple forms? (yeah i'm like you on this one bud) Yuuka - oh yeah. Also huh, another one of the 2hus from my personal top 10 favorites. I guess her fanon depiction has become fuel for some fetishes, and so a lot of fanservice? From what I have seen on Danbooru, most of her NSFW material tends to go from 0 to 100 real quick. From very mild, to very much not suitable for life and "this is such a bad day to have eyes". I faintly remember one of the quote about her in canon is her eyes are scary and from that one some people give her the trait of the sadistic so that's why you can see material about her ranging from very tame to very ouchy. Therapeutic vs Influential. Views on fiction concerning if consumers are influenced or if it's a form of therapy seems to be case nobody talks about especially that I observed the new generation mostly from the west (my observation) thinks all fiction is influential. Well, we do learn important lessons from novels, movies and games and what not, it's also important to know that fiction is therapeutic. When I was kid, I was curious what a pregnant lady would look like when her belly was cut clean in half and I could see what's inside, what are the flesh walls that disconnects from a woman's belly and the fetus (I know, very horrible morbid curiosity) but I didn't became a criminal because my parent's disciplined me right and I played GTA San Andreas; curiosity solved when I hacked a preggy lady with a katana. It's important to know that humans especially when they grow up would start to want something we never have or do something we never did, even if it's illegal, immoral, or even impossible, and we would find all the ways possible to satisfy it. It's just that we found out performing these things through drawings is the most harmless way possible. I guess compared to the Western entertainment industry (though I'm not against it, There are really good therapeutic western shows too), Asian animation industry understood that crave especially in Japan which is filled with the practice of Honor and strict discipline, decided to satisfy those craves through a nigh boundless exploration of free writing anime (which in these times, most are now called trash). I am not against the Influential theory either, it is true that there are people being influenced by fiction and commit crimes, when it comes down to it, it really just depends on the person if shows are therapeutic or influential, and we can't really do anything about cause if censorship wins fiction, crimes would be coming from the ones need therapy and if freedom of writing isn't categorizing it to tags and age restrictions, then most crimes would come from the influenced. Yes this is definitely related 2hu porn. I think the answer to some of your questions would simply be sum up in 1 word: doujinshi. Doujinshi scene in Japan is kind of one-of-a-kind, since the word itself basically means "publishing for people with the same interests", it's no surprise how popular the doujinshi scene is in Japan. With this, it led to a booming number of amateur/self-published works to flood the market, especially in case of Touhou which is a very old fandom in terms of a franchise. Since doujinshi itself is semi-protected by law (you can sell doujinshi for profits without any authorization, though of course still need to follow censorship law, unless it's mass produced or published by a bigger company), a lot of new artists make doujin to promote their works to a bigger audience. And there's no better place to "make it big" than jumping in an already established group like Touhou. That's why even till now Touhou is still sustaining itself with new works every day. Touhou even has its own Comiket with Touhou-only works so no surprise a lot of those works are later reposted to the Internet. For why "p0rn" seems to be popular, well, as you already said, "sex sells". Sex is one of human basic instinct that will probably be with us forever no matter how "evolved" we are. Human is one of the few species that do sexual acts for pleasure and not just for reproduction after all. In thise case, again, Japan is kinda unique here. In its history, there were famous Japanese artists who produced "adult" paintings before the "manga" term is born. The Japanese people themselves have somewhat unique view when it comes to sex unlike other Asian counterparts. Even now its sex industry is still thriving and even legalized so that's no surprise why sex sells, especially in Japan. As a fun trivia, a lot of franchises or works started as "adult games" (H-Visual Novel, like the Fate franchise for example). Regarding why Japan artists produce what you may call more "explicit" type of porn, we will have to go back to a lot of history which I can't recap (like how the lolicon culture become so popular in Japan) you may need to do your own research since they're, well, not so suitable on Reddit. But to sum it up I would say the reasons are the non-censorship approach from the government (they do have "soft" censorship requirements, but as long as you meet those reqs, you can do whatever), the influence from other culture (like BDSM/gore) and the fact that Japanese don't really go out of their way to criticize others for their fetishes and even normalize some of them. Touhou does not have any more R-18 fanworks than any other series, proportionally. You have looked at the percentage of R-18 fanart on pixiv touhou characters have, but have you compared them to characters from other franchises? Last I checked girls like Tifa or Samus had 40% R-18 content or something. Touhou has an overall average amount of porn among all fan content, there just is A LOT of fan content. Imma real with you OP, this subreddit isn't English Literature/Humanities class so idk why you're writing a thesis paper here To answer your question; this fandom is one of the cornerstone of otaku culture and has some of the ingredients of why it became so popular in the first place: It's been a thing since the early 2000's; 99% of the characters are anime girls with ZUN's unique style; there's variety for the type of anime girl that is waifu-able; you want a shrine maiden? a confident witch? a god complex fairy? a loyal maid? lots of possible yuri shipping? ZUN has you covered; also it helps that ZUN's policy to fanworks is lax so fanartists can go ham as much as they want. And for why the large amount of horni fanarts and doujins; this is human psychology we're talking about. Do you need to ask why? That's like asking why the sky is blue, birds fly, or why the Queen of UK still lives - they just do. It's a fact of life. My impression with you is that you're bothered with the amount of adult works for a franchise that isn't fanservice-heavy and you're in denial or finding some way to validate your conflicting feelings. Or at least that's what the first 3 paragraphs suggests. Personally, I LOVE the lewd content of a fandom - for me its a sign that the fandom is thriving and healthy. And more Yuuka fanarts, lewd or otherwise, the better for little ol' me. So yeah, next time maybe it'll help if you trim your post to like 3-4 paragraphs cuz that's honestly what the average redditor's attention span can read until they're bored of it and look for tldr or just skip the post. You do remind me of a friend of mine who is diagnosed with Autism or on its spectrum and he's very verbose for fear of "not getting the point across" if he does it short. Are you on the spectrum yourself OP? Edit: Okay I skimmed some of the post and comments; just to clarify that I am not into loli porn and I do not approve sexualization of them in case you're magnifying the "I love lewd content" line I said, and I want to say that OP please don't be offended if the tone of my comment seems to have no punches pulled but I just find it amusing that you're taking this topic way too seriously. Count's comment: more of a personal one this time - I may have (by imply) have been called an autist, but I guess this is the internet. If you can't take a joke, you have no plave on the internet (and maybe I am an autist - I never checked myself out to a doctor). I am not offended. I really do not have why to be so. This text could indeed be much shorter, but I felt I had quite a lot of things to get out of my chest. Everyone can like whatever they want, as long as it doesn't affect others irl. Thank you for making this! I've really wondered about this for a long time (ever since I've been a fan) and now have a more concrete answer. Honestly I couldn't care less if people like NSFW content but the fact in so many places degenerative behaviour is accepted and some of the more questionable content is talked a lot about I've always felt somewhat uncomfortable, especially when seeing gross / dehumanizing art of the characters. I think that some of the rampant degeneracy might be due in part that touhou is bordering on the line of anime as a niche series, to the point lots of fans / people on the outside of the fandom consider it anime, and so some of that degenerate / NSFW behaviour gets pulled in, but that is less solid fact and more what I think. I know people are gonna be perverts and stuff, it just always weirded me out as a fan of touhou purely for NSFW. I'm still not gonna shame anyone or anything like that for it, just wish the horny would be toned down a bit in more general places. Regardless, thanks for taking the time to talk! It's been an interesting read on something that doesn't get recorded with solid evidence / talking points much. To put it simply; it’s because the world is horny. Having almost all the of characters being girls + cool designs + popularity + free reign over the characters + the horniness of mankind makes Touhou a prime target for horny art Because girls. Touhou is a series with a massive female roster with unique/attractive characters. Of course that's going to draw the attention of many people fans and non fans alike. And people imagine themselves either getting sexually or romantically involved with such characters. The characters are physically attractive and a lot have interesting personalities. It's the same case as real life romance, they can't help but to feel attracted. Even if 2D. The faceless stuff is, as you said, is for self insert stuff. (Even though I prefer girl shipping so I don't really read that stuff). But like...it's people just enjoying what they enjoy. What's the big deal? It doesn't really matter. Europeans prefer they're own stuff and so do Asians. I'm perfectly fine seeing a NFSW version of whatever character. It's to be expected. Guys, don’t tell him about the 4chan posts, he’s scared enough. But on a serious note, one of the actual best ways to get into Touhou is to look at porn if it, mainly because of the sheer amount of fucking details they put into it. Plus most people who play touhou are: already into anime, or bullet hell games, have enough time to get into Touhou, and are most likely single. All of those things combined results in a lot of degenerative behaviour and hornyness. Question is, how much Touhou porn do you actively seek out. I’m assuming it’s not a lot and that might be because of the way you got introduced to the series. Count's comment: What if I was neither into anime nor bullet hell games when I got into Touhou? On a serious note, I really did get to explore these two only after I found this franchise in itself. There was something about it feeling so unique, different from anything I was used to up to that point. And as I fell down the hole, I started exploring more and more, always getting into something I would have not thought to explore mere months before. Most Touhou characters are cute and sassy, while ZUN always tries to double down in the "cute" part his art reads as a huge "do me fanart" for the japanese drawing community, who happen to have lots of male (I would have put young, but by this point after reading some comments of former navy men on stuff like Kancolle I decided a fox remains a fox his entire life). So yeah, a sassy and attractive young woman, what exactly did people expect? If you really want to know why there is so much hentai, it's because the doujin side of Touhou is so free, leading to a bunch of people choosing that franchise to practice their art or gain recognition. Hentai is no exception, and because the designs are really free to interperet, they can put them into a hell of a lot of situations. A lot of popular manga artists have drawn one or two touhou doujins. Holy hell, you could write a full novel. I'd say that an answer would be its anime-like art style combined with having nearly 200 characters to draw being fyu-hucked, most of which having different abilities allowing for people to draw different eye bleeders. I can and will stand by the opinion that if it exists, somebody has a fetish for it. Now why, in the world, does Eika have even a single R34 post? She's a damned child! You and your questions are so weird. "Why are people so horny?" Is this question for real? "why do they sexualize children?" aren't children adorable? "why unreal proportions?" bigger is always better Also, I guess the artists make bank with +18 doujins, and it might be easier to just borrow the cuties from 2hu instead of designing an original character. Alice is so hot, like so damn hot. Since they're used to drawing erotic stuff, the art the produce during their free time might be lewd, out of habit, and because it farms tons of likes on twitter. I personally don't like this culture either, I prefer drawings of girls getting cute outfits boosting their allure, instead of nudity to lure horny people, but Alice's doujins are so good, so delicious. Count's comment: big red flags in this comment, not gonna touch it with a 10 foot pole. All I can say right now is the following meme showing two utter extremes: I've chalked it up to 4 reasons: 1) Touhou has been around for a long enough time to cement itself as a prime doujinshi in the ero department 2) Due to Zun's leniency on copyright the abundancy of fanworks and doujin have grown to a community of talented ero artists 3) Variety: its got a lot of ero tags covered it has Cowgirls, Bunnygirls, Wolfgirls, Catgirls, Horns, Milfs, Lolis, Maids etc 4) Most people are looking for ero of franchises they don't know of to separate their ero waifus from their actual waifus as a result of touhou not being as known in the west its become the ideal option of creating ero without going through the effort of making a distinguished OC (at least that's my theory) I am just wondering how trash taste haven't talked about a Touhou doujinshi yet. Unrelated: ZUN discovering what the fandom has done with his characters It's more than just the sexual fancontent in itself it's the narrative that it has. For example (and this is based on the memes) here's a situation where a lecherous Touhou fan, probably much older than most characters, suddenly ends up in front of the Hakurei shrine... - Reimu: Young girl who is poor, isolated and lives alone (for the most part) - Perv 2hu fan: Offers money to Reimu in exchange for armpit pics, foot rubs and even "favors" because they have no morals whatsoever. Maybe the fan will even ignore her objections to such offers and/or take advantage of her anyway because she lives at a distance from the village and no one will hear her suffering. Reimu isn't real, sure, but a lot of girls live in the same conditions she does IRL and a situation like that could very well take place and that horrifies me which is why I find this aspect of fandoms in general unnerving—there are definitely fanbases far more toxic than Touhou's worst. It could very well be a reflection of just how desensitized people have become towards sex and how we turned our primal behavior (sex, violence, etc) into a commonplace theme. But that's just my personal take. Count's comment: Indeed, there seems to be some sort of desensitization to have taken place in the past few years. Not just with Touhou, but in general when it comes to the online medium at least. It is not like we live in a context in which people are becoming more and more horny for stuff, at least from like 2020 onwards. First we had Lady Dimitrescu (funny how a Romanian character became a waifu), then Samsung Sam and Akha (Zone). The newest frenzy is (or at least used to be) about the clown character from Ace Attorney (and "clussy"), while all artists went wild and drew the back of a V-tuber just because she turned her back to the people, and her dress had a big cleavage exposing a lot of skin. This whole thing is not just about Touhou, it happens with absolutely everything. However, I decided to focus it on Touhou because 1) this is a Touhou-centric community and 2) Touhou still holds the podium as series in terms of how passionate people are to create not-so-family-friendly content of the horny kind. Count's comment: ok, we discovered the average 2022 Touhou fan I didn’t read the entire post, but i dont think it’s too surprising. As you develop relationships with people of the opposite sex, i think its probably natural to occasionally think about them in this manner. Though creepy and invasive, you could probably even make drawings to explore those thoughts. The difference here is twofold: 1) You would be making guesses at something that actually exists, so it wouldn’t be very fulfilling. Also 3d art would probably be uncanny. 2) You would likely have to be the person to create that, as the likelihood that somebody else knows that same person and has already done so is (hopefully) zero. With the invention of AI, the possibility of those two points changing is becoming very real. That’s a frightening prospect to be sure, but it demonstrates my point that the desire to do so exists separate from touhou. So, why touhou? Well, I’d like to believe that zun did a good job giving his creation character. So as you play and replay, you develop a relationship with the characters and stories (triumphs and agonizing defeats) and the same thing occurs that i described above. Add in that its a fantasy world by nature, and you’re essentially begging peoples minds to wander. The character portraits give enough detail to capture the essence of the character, but it’s as if they’re being viewed through a cloudy mirror. So both their personality and actual physical traits can be developed upon. This lends itself to “building” a character with traits you like. I think you understand where that could lead people. Especially if you’re already selecting from the demographic that would be interested in this series to begin with. So, bullet 1 is resolved because 2d art is simpler to make look appealing. And you could make it quickly and cheaply. Also, because the original traits were merely suggestions, your nsfw art might as well be the real deal. That “is” what that character would look like, because there is no reality to judge against. Point 2 goes without saying that since it’s a popular series, you could be incentivized to create because there are is an audience for it. Excuse me while i clear my head, as i find the whole topic kind of gross. I enjoy touhou specifically because there is no fan service in the series itself. But i just dont find it surprising in the least. (somebody actually replied to the post above, giving an interesting point): I feel like people go through the opposite though? Over the years I've become so familiar with these characters that it actually starts feeling weird seeing them in the way they’re portayed in porn. To me it feels like seeing my irl friends naked. It feels weird. Although i don’t consider Touhou characters as “friends” in any way; I’m a writer, and i generally see them as characters with interesting stories that are interpreted in many interesting ways. Also, most people that like Touhou porn are usually not Touhou fans. There’s a common misconception among people that read a lot of hentai doujins that Touhou is a hentai franchise. The whole parasocial relationship thing may apply to stuff like vtubers or anime, however Touhou is a franchise where finding character dialogue at all is actually rather difficult. Spending time “hanging out” with a Touhou character to form a paradocial relationship with them is not something you can easily do. It’s really not that deep. I think it’s just ppl that like hentai reading a bunch of hentai (whether they know anything about Touhou or not). And a bunch of independent artists seeing a popular franchise that allows you to easily create & sell fanworks of, making porn of that franchise for profit over the literal decades Touhou has been a popular & well-known cultural icon in Japanese Otaku culture. People build careers & portfolios over Touhou fanworks in Japan. Makes sense that hentai artists would do the same, no? Touhou is just really popular in Japan. There’s a lot of fanworks based off of it which can be easily sold. Its got a bunch of female characters. Of course there’s gonna be a lot of porn based off of it. I’m sure there are a few fans out there that have parasocial relationships with Touhou characters. But i dunno, Touhou characters are not made to be appealing to men; in fact, a lot of them are downright unattractive personality-wise. You can see this especially in their characters designs; in most other franchises with lots of female characters, their character designs are usually almost always “tiddlating” & show a lot of skin or whatever to appeal to a degenerate male audience. On the other hand, almost all Touhou characters wear really big & poofy & pretty dresses that show little to no skin. This same applies to the characters’ personalities & such; they’re just not made to “appeal” like that. I think that’s probably why it’s also got a much larger female following than those other franchises with large casts of female characters. In many ways, I feel like Touhou has more similarities to a magical girl franchise that’s made to appeal to a female audience, than those “harem” type franchises made to appeal to a male audience. (and yet another reply): I think I understand where you're coming from, but I also think attraction is more broad than that. Sure, most "popular" anime-style products aim for that appeal. If you're investing that much money into a production, you're likely going to play it safe with the standard "sex sells". But the discussion is specifically about fanmade depictions. I can't imagine a more boring prospect than drawing porn of porn. If the characters are presented only as meat, then I don't see much of a lasting appeal. You get your fix and forget about it immediately. So where's the incentive in drawing characters from that franchise? I (personally) think a girl in a plain t-shirt or hoodie can be quite appealing. To go further, "tiddlating" presentations are uninteresting and an immediate turn-off. I don't feel comfortable generalizing that just because female characters aren't in revealing outfits, then it's automatically not for men. The touhou fashion style is "gothic lolita" which almost certainly can have its own charm. To your point, I would agree that women would be drawn to a series with positive female representation. I disagree with the notion that men wouldn't. I'll just go back to my "cloudy mirror" argument. The art is so underwhelming that it wraps around and becomes (potentially) scintillating again. Because you reimagine what they actually would look like, and that's what I imagine makes it fun. Count's comment: I was thinking a little bit about this, and there are some valid points. After spending a while with a series, experiencing it, you might end up creating some connections. Be them admiration, respect or just enjoying that thing. It is just how much you like that thing, and how willing you feel to see that thing you like getting perverted. I mean for a long time I felt confused and had mixed feeling in processing the idea of seeing my favorite characters in less than family-friendly situations and depictions. I have already mentioned towards the end of the thread how my contact with this whole topic has been, and how things have changed in time. But I might be able to see why people would enjoy this sort of thing. However, one question: is this actually you liking the thing, the characters, the way they are designed and their personalities, or is it just a way to cope with the lack of something in real life? Because I can see the latter as possible as well. Trying to use cutely drawn anime-style girls in order to fill an empty spot in your soul, which perhaps could have been filled in other ways. And this counts for the both the more or less whole things and situations we may put the 2hus in, given the freedom of creation given to the fans. (Got this in reply): I’m not well versed enough in philosophy, but i think those two concepts might be inseparable. Things make you happier. Well, that necessarily meant you were missing something before. So anything that makes you happy is merely coping with the lack of something. But perhaps that reading is too pedantic. I think a lot of people turn to nsfw stuff because they are bored, and it’s a simple, effective way to occupy your time and feel something “positive”. You and i would likely both argue that immediate gratification isn’t actually a positive, but still. It’s not too different than vegging out and watching tv on the couch all day. It’s just that little bit cheaper, as it’s better understood how to excite a sexual response in a person than a feeling of awe (from art, music, etc). On the other end of the spectrum is learning an instrument (or how to play a difficult videogame, ). Perhaps more fulfilling, but less immediate. At the end of the day, I’d avoid shaming people at all costs for how they choose to spend their time. I disagree with it, but it’s perfectly rational and it’s not like i know their situations. Well that was honestly a bit of a doosy to read through. Well I kinda glossed over some bits I honestly dont think this subject has been touched on all that much as of late and I think its something that should be touched on, especially regarding this subreddit for the past several months. Count's comment: by "the past several months", user most likely refers to Fusu-posting era, followed by the rise of the name XG3E weeb and then classic cookie-cutter Touhou video format based on cropped hentai thumbnail and random content in the video itself. I find it interesting that once the Fusu floodgate got closed, soon afterwards this happened https://youtu.be/ArlLLg-s8cw. Which in itself has opened up another floodgate that still has to run out of steam. In a way, it seemed liked a natural progression, and due to a lack of regulation or people complaining (and creating a counter-movement - I still remember those days), the format ended up being overused and a cheap way for people to get attention. Slap a cropped hentai image for thumbnail, perhaps crop a few more or just use some thicc fanart for the cookie cutter video, and you got yourself all the attention in the world by baiting in horny people. It most likely has to do with the recent resurgence in touhou's popularity attracting a whole bunch of new people. Though I think the floodgates with the horny stuff on this subreddit were opened when the whole Fusu thing went down. Tho to be completely fair, I don't know the current state of that content on this sub because I have blocked a bunch of the horny posters, so my assessment of this content on the sub as of now is probably not the most accurate. As someone who is an outsider to the Touhou community and has been browsing this subreddit from time to time over the last year as well as from my time looking at Touhou fanart(both SFW and NSFW), I feel that this is a subject that should really be talked about more. One of my biggest questions about the entire community is why is there so much nsfw art. And now to finish, just getting a bit more of Fusu, point-of-view art, empty love confessions (+ sex) and repetitive content, because why not. Actually, becuase there will remain in hstory a time when r/touhou was clogged with his art, which drove many to despair back then (and lead to some of the images including the one I have used in the opening of the post) (source - https://www.reddit.com/r/touhou/comments/wjld05/whats_wrong_with_fusus_art/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) Random Fusu art piece used to illustrate the concept discussed below. For obvious reasons, I have gone with a safe for work image I never thought there was nothing wrong with Fusu's artwork. I kinda enjoy them. I prefer to see the Touhous as tender, submissive and even amorous sweethearts rather than these overpowered, malevolent and homicidal bitches. I found it to have weird undertones and I disliked how the characters basically had the same personality so I drew a parody. Then the sub got swathed with similar memes. Oops. It was oversaturated for a while, also UwU-ification of the Touhou girls. But yes there are weird arse double standards with content people despise and content they love. Hell even what people can and can't post on this reddit has weird double standards. Maybe it's the same as Hammer? Where their fanart went from wholesome and cute to horny in the blink if an eye? And so people are miffed that Fusu is only drawing hentai now instead of some kind of balance between the two? [Count's comment: Fusu has not drawn a signle safe-for-work image since November last year. If you have the "keep out R18 content" filter activated on Pixiv, you will not see anything new in his art list since 10 months ago, but you will know he has been busy with a quick check on Danbooru] The fact that all characters act like generic anime girls and shipping them with the viewer just seems kinda sad (this may be harsh to some but I don't know how to phrase it other way). Also personally I'm not too fond of hentai but that's just me. Tbh nothing was wrong with the art itself, I feel like a large amount of the problem people had was the fact that it was being posted too frequently according to them, and they were sucking up all of the upvotes from other posts that deserved them more in their eyes. And that's a fine PoV to have, they were highly upvoted iirc, but also I browse on new rather than top / hot so idk for sure. I'm a bit biased because I kind of liked the art style and didn't really bother reading most of the translations (after the first few I got the idea pretty quick lol) [for better formatting, I will leave this here] 1) The art itself is degrading, and takes, shall we say, great liberties with the 2hus' characterizations for the sole purpose of titillating the viewer. It's neckbeard-bait, plain and simple. And Touhou as I like it is the antithesis of neckbeard-bait. 2) Someone was spamming it virtually nonstop at one point on this sub. And whether due to the initial novelty of the thing, the horniness of the average redditor, or bots, those posts got lots of upvotes and shot to the top of Hot more often than not. Even people who initially didn't mind it eventually got sick of it. Conclusion: the only thing I still had questions about was why people act depraved when it comes to the existence of such art and content. They act like a monkey in heat, as if they never seaw a woman in their life.

  41. I agree with this sentiment. It's a popularity poll, so I'm always quite puzzled that people are disappointed or angry or whatever when the popular thing inevitably wins. EoSD might not be my favorite shooter and U. N. Owen might not be my favorite song, but regardless of whether you consider them "overrated" or whatever the ultimate outcome is the same: "I think they're overrated" - Why be disappointed with the results then? If the number of people that like it exceeds what you expect then it placing high should be no surprise (as being disappointed entails that you had different expectations). "I don't think they're overrated, but (less popular thing) is better so it should've won/placed higher/etc." - That's not the point. Fans of a medium aren't automatically experienced critics, and most people won't use high placements on a popularity poll to discover new works/songs/whatever anyways because if it placed high on a popularity poll there's a pretty good chance they already know about it. Is this just the innate human underdog effect where they desperately want to root for the less likely candidate even in this scenario where the premise of the contest is to gauge the exact opposite? Who knows. (Also, as a side note, I believe most people like Internet Survivor for the high effort and passionately-made PV more so than the song itself.) And now that the civilized part of the post is over, ahem

  42. I've made a new fangame for Touhou Station Game Jam 2022! The theme this game is based on in "tsunagu" - "connect". Connected Spirits is high-score chasing beat-em-up game where you control Youmu's human and ghost half simultaneously. By considering the position of both characters, you can chain your combos for longer and collect additional stamina so that you can keep slashing. Vengeful spirits will attempt to attack the Saigyou Ayakashi, defend it for as long as possible and defeat as many as you can! The game gets progressively harder the longer you last, and maintaining a high combo isn't just to be flashy, it becomes very important in the later stages of the game! The music was made by my friend Cassare. I did the programming, design and pixel art, and Needlemouse contributed an image to the title screen. The game was hastily translated into Japanese with the help of some online dictionaries and DeepL The game can be found on my itch.io here: https://buskerdog.itch.io/connected-spirits And it can be found on the game jam website, along with all the other submissions, here: https://touhou-gamejam.web.app/en/work/kEkFZpJsZoBBxdZT/ You can also check screenshots of the game following the above links!

  43. (Tradition dictates a Star Wars reference, but I don't want to jinx it; doubles as a Mystic Square reference.) IT'S TIME! Announcing the eighth Moriya Shrine Remix Tournament! I think my previous explanation was pretty good, so I'm just going adjust it slighty: Enrollment will be open for approximately one week. Each participant shall submit three musical arrangements/remixes via Messages. The tournament itself shall consist of rounds of three remixes each, with each participant reviewing entries in their preferred manner of numbering system and commentary; rating of participant's own submissions is not discouraged, but will not affect the final score. Once all submissions have been featured and reviewed, the ratings shall be tallied to determine the "winner." Anyone and everyone is invited! If there are any questions, feel free to inquire! Referencing previous tournaments may be helpful for clarification, though they should not be taken as "standards;" the goal is to have fun and appreciate music. [Currently] Enrolled Participants: @buskerdog @Tenkko @Shionne Imeris @Drunken_Flower @Gou the frog @SasaMisa @CountVonNumenor

  44. EoSD: You're either a massive boomer, or you're a newcomer who's only played EoSD and nothing else. PCB: You probably played this one first because someone told you it was a good one to start with (they were right), and you hold it in high regards due to how good of an introduction to the series it was. You're also a huge Youmu fan. IN: You're still kind of a boomer, just with way better taste than the EoSD guys. PoFV: You have friends who you play this game with semi-competitively on a regular basis, and you all enjoy it. Seeing people who've only played the singleplayer talk about how bad the game is causes you physical pain. MoF: The same as the PCB fans, just with either Aya or Sanae instead of Youmu. If you're one of the Aya fans, you like to pretend this was her first game instead of PoFV. SA: I'm sorry I can't think of anything for SA fans UFO: You have ADHD. TD: You don't exist. DDC: You enjoy the more straightforward, less gimmicky gameplay of the older titles, but also prefer a more polished overall experience. Neither side really likes you very much. LoLK: You enjoy pain. HSiFS: Playable Cirno/Aya let's goooooooo WBaWC: You're a furry. UM: I have no clue what to put for UM fans either

  45. Bwahahaha it is I! Like a certain pebble girl we all know and love, I have been lurking in plain sight this whole time! That is to say, I've been visiting here for a few years now but I thought I would maybe dive into the community a lil more? I'm so nervous I'm making cliche nervous poses in front of my pc monitor, wow! I'm very shy.. I've been into Touhou for a pretty long time but recently is when my love for it really really kicked off. My greatest achievement ever ever ever, is beating Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom 1cc on Normal. Definitely went insane. Favourite characters: Yoshika, Shinmy, and my favouritest of all, Chimata!!! I hope I can get along well with everyone!? <3
