Ok, so, I’ve put my whole rant in this textbox below. It’s a massive tangent that goes into the image choice that was used, it’s insanity. But anyways, I’m talking about the music now lol.

First, picture choice. Is it just me or do people use this image a lot? I swear whenever I hear a remix of Sukuna’s theme, 1/4th of a time it’s this pic. Like, literally, here’s my collection.

(Also, yes, I call her Sukuna instead of Shinmyoumaru. It’s way faster to type).

This one’s the most popular. By a landslide. Talking millions of views. No remix, just one from the OST. The omnipresent ScarletFlameFlandre.

Another OST reupload. Louchan, another notable Touhou reuploader.

Yet another OST duplicate. Yep, even Clownplease uses this image!

You like Sukuna’s theme? Do you want to listen to it for ONE HOUR!?!?! Honestly, these 1 hour compilations have always pained me. Like, it’s the worst of both worlds personally. Why play this when you can use the loop button? (Unless it’s not on mobile or something idk?) And I can’t even put this on a playlist because I’m stuck listening to ONE WHOLE HOUR OF SUKUNA’S THEME. Like, don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad theme, but oof.

Wan~椀~ byサリー Personally my favorite remix I’ve heard of her theme. Linkstarzelda being another well-known uploader.

Feeling Heart by Amateras Records. This one has cool visual effects at least.

Little Braver by RP.D&MW. More obscure rock remix. Has an audio synthesizer in the corner.

Swear By God by Yuuhei Satellite. Funnily enough, the thumbnail covers the art lol. But it’s still  the full image on the video itself.

小さな針のようなby 奥山ナマリ Even senya can’t escape!

DD by monochrome-coat. A hilariously-short title. Very close to the shortest Touhou track name I’ve ever seen. Yeah I’ve seen one’s that are just “?” or “A” XD

And these are just the Youtube ones! I haven’t even gotten to nicovideo.jp or bilibili yet!

Lonely Little Circus by カミヤシロ

https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm22613185

And even Mizuiro ‘s profile picture on this site itself

https://moriyashrine.org/profile/6386-mizuiro/content/

But, out of curiousity, I’ve gone and did a Google Image search of the image, and wow. It’s pure insanity how much times this image is used. Official ZUN art? GONE. Alphes? GONE. Twilight Frontier? Ehhh… close contender, BUT STILL.

LIKE SERIOUSLY IT’S AN ARMY!???!?! Genuinely, this has haunted me for years. Why? Why do people choose THIS image in particular? Is it some demonic aura? Some divine spell?

Yeah, glad to hear people saying that because that's exactly the way it should be taken! Gonna thank everyone for participating once again, and thanks to Jssf for hosting and number crunching.

🥳 I'm really surprised that worked! DF's reviews of The Way Home and Time Passes in the Field had me heavily doubting them as his picks, despite my initial assumptions. It eventually came down to

Ready for the final round?

First up, a vocal rock mix for the Tiny, Tiny, Clever Commander:

Second, an orchestration of Bad Apple:

And last, but certainly not least, an orchestral arrange of Lunatic Princess:

sorry guys but i'm probably gonna be out of there for a decent while and right now i'm in kind of hurry so i'm just going to leave ratings and short notes with them

i hope no one minds it that way

1. 9/10 i could call it one of my favourite SOUND HOLIC songs easily

2. 5/10 a bit too calm for my tastes even for orchestra

3. 7/10 this is rather kind of orchestral i would listen to, theme and traditional style are also pretty good

FLASH STORM

Well, this is moreso a remix of At The End Of Spring, but I did hear some bits of A Tiny Tiny Clever Commander in there as well so I'll let it slide. This is one of those songs where the synergy between the singing and the instrumental works really well. Other than that, this is just some plain good metal, with enough shifts to move the music forward and an epic guitar solo part. 8/10.

Bad Apple (Orchestration)

Oh, I happen to know this one. I'll be honest, for me it's just too difficult to recognise as bad apple, but I know it's trying to fit into classical style and that it's not exactly meant to be the bad apple I recognise; and I also know the composer knows that too as I've read their comments before. Which, overall, makes this incredibly difficult to rate for me. But I guess I'll take it from the top. After the initial intro, it sets a slow, melancholy mood. Then about halfway through there's this kind of turn in the music, where it feels grander and more atmospheric, but still overall melancholy. And then this grandness is amplified toward the end, ending with a nice, calm resolution. I guess I don't normally listen to "sad" music so doesn't immediately click with me, but it definitely feels like it would work well as the soundtrack to something - sort of reminds of the Ori games in that regard. I definitely can't give it less than a 7/10. In the right context it's possible I would give it even more, but I'm going to take it at face value as it is here, so I'm sticking to that 7/10.

Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess Pretty sure flight IN the bamboo cutter is a typo

I love the mood set by the traditional instruments working with the orchestral instruments in this, it creates this very grand and powerful music that feels like it's depicting some grand or climactic moment, and it has a lot of these different shifts in pace in the song, which just furthers the sense of scope it has. It really creates this sense of awe, but is also quite energetic. Feels like it could fit a cinematic opening just as well as a final battle. 10/10.

Sidenote: I feel these were a good selection of songs to finish off with. How does Jssf decide what order to post the songs in; is it just random generation or does he choose?

1: ooh metal
the vocal and the instruments are amazing
id say At the End of Spring is too cheerful for metal stuff, it amazing but at some parts it feels a bit off.
i can't comment anything else.
8/10
im also at the mood for some bang, so yeah...
im a professional. (that was a sarcasm)

2: Flan, stop stealing Elly's theme.
ohmygod, this feels G R A N D
im feeling [?????] vibes from this.
dunno but aint hear any 2hu in this?? only the opening contain a bit of bad apple. (oh! then i read busker's comment. Im not the only one yay)
i also heard a bit at 3:26, it really slow, im having a hard time recognizing this.
i feel this works as a cinematic movie ost.
7/10
not sure if can be used as game ost, maybe for last boss? well yea it grand... but too slow for last boss theme.
for ending theme? yes slow, but too grand.
wait, this great for ending this tournament.

3: oh a traditional
the intro nicely intriguing
japanese trad is always feel amazing, or just me?
i kinda wish they use more traditional instruments in this, kinda ruined the traditional feeling.
add few shamisen and there you got it.
8/10

jssf, you shoulda put the bad apple after the lunatic princess.
and then we have a proper ending.

Flash Storm
Wow, there’s a lot of ummm… ketchup in that picture. What’s she making? Ratatouille?
0:10 The beginning here is pretty focused on heavy bass guitar surprisingly. Seems more like Demetori initially than Sound Holic, since they usually do more trance vocal stuff.
0:25 Ahhh here’s the classic vocals. It’s a nice contrast with the melody here, since “End of Spring” is usually such a cheerful song” and now it’s super intense.
1:03 I like how it gets faster here! It helps make the parts more unique when a lot of them are really similar.
2:30 I’m always a fan of guitar bridges, since it lets them deviate away from the original melody a bit to do more creative stuff, while still preserving the original melody of the song.
Overall, I can see some saying that the melody can get a bit repetitive, but I find it very catchy so I won’t fault it in that regard. While it doesn’t do anything that hasn’t been unheard of before, it’s something I’d definitely be content with listening to over and over again on some of my playlists. And sometimes, we need stuff that doesn’t go too crazy with odd instruments and that sticks to the classics.
8/10

Bad Apple

Since this whole song sounds like a narrative to me, I’m making a narrative. Not based on Elly though, she's just a gate keeper. A generic trope-based one, but whatever! That’s right, TWO REVIEWS. TWICE AS MANY TIMESTAMPS.

If this was an accompaniment to some sort of theatre performance, I imagine the acts would go something like this.
0:00 – 0:45 Show’s the main character’s regular childhood, all happy and normal.
0:45 – 1:22 Tragedy strikes. They’re attending a funeral. Maybe antagonist kills MC’s parents, their pets, their house burns down, their sibling, they give them MC bad review in a remix tournament, etc.
1:22 – 1:50 MC’s angry and wants revenge.
1:50 – 2:22 Everything above was a flashback. Now MC’s in the present, doing the plan to get revenge.
2:22 – 2:50 Viewer sees ANT for the first time. Antagonist has a whole speech about how evil they are. MC is angry/sad/puking idk. And they’re fighting. The
2:50 – 3:08 ANT escapes mockingly. MC can’t believe it. That whole part above? Yeah, that was just a really cool tutorial that was put into an action sequence to hook the viewer into the story while still explaining to them the combat basics. MC is back at their hometown, talking to NPC’s, and starting on their long quest to chase ANT to their evil lair.
3:08 – 3:41 That’s right, one of MC’s party members who you think was going to last the whole game suddenly dies after the first area. It’s like the game’s saying “Yeah, nobody’s safe from perma death”. MC’s sad/angry/puking as usual, and blames ANT for this, more motivated to defeat them.
3:41 – 4:09 Next area, there’s a whole new culture and species here. Apparently, these guys got screwed over by ANT too, so one guy there has a whole side story arc that ties into the greater lore and joins your team.
4:09 – 4:19 This new guy who you just met is explaining to you all the lore that they’re suddenly just remembering now while going through next area, aka the final area.
4:19 – 4:52 You see ANT again. ANT explains some shocking twist like how secretly you’re perma-deathed team mate is actually alive or how they’re joe mama or something. So, you fight. But this guy has like 50 “final” phases.
4:52 – 5:34 It’s finally over. Epilogue. Resolutions. Maybe someone sacrifices themselves in the final fight. Mourning. Reunion. Credits roll.
5:35 SIKE there’s like TEN other BONUS BOSSES who are waaaaayyyy stronger than the final boss who have barely anything to do with the lore, but you wanna prove you’re a “true fan” of the game so you do them even though you just exploit a strategy you searched up online. All to have the title screen turn a different shade of green, or to get a random cosmetic for MC.
And don’t even get me started on NG+

Here’s the part where I actually review the music, and explain some extra details from the narrative that I couldn’t fit in above. Consider this like the 1-hour Director’s Cut video that couldn’t fit on the main CD.
0:05. Already though, I’m surprised. Already I can’t tell the original melody in this, which is a rare plus, considering how often used the melody is. This definitely reminds me of one of those classical orchestra though.
Funny story, but I was actually a part of an Orchestra back in high school. Accidentally though. It was labelled as “Band” on the course registration sheet so I thought I was going into a Rock Band with like, electric guitars and drums, but it was really “Concert Band”. So anyways, I was one of those percussion guys playing the Glockenspiel, Timpani, Maraca’s, Tambourine, etc, XD
So maybe I can appreciate this piece a bit more considering my past experience. Since it’s not your regular ActiveNeet trumpet Orchestra.
0:20 Hey, nice reverse cymbal.
0:45 I like the use of the Organ for the parts that came before it. Tbh, I never really noticed it until it was gone, so that goes to show how well it blended with the first part. I’ve also just noticed that these different parts seem like they could illustrate some sort of “story”, so I can’t help myself but imagine a narrative here being built by the music.
1:10 The violins in the background really give this part a somber, contemplative feel. So far, this would be my favorite part, since I love how elongated and deep the strings sound here.
1:22 I like how it transitions here from sadness to determination. Like, the MC gets out of their slump and is motivated to change. You can really tell with the gaps between the violins, the sharp stops. Rather than long and contemplative, it’s intense and forward.
1:50 Ahhhh I love the bell here. For me, it symbolizes a flashback, like, the MC was thinking about their motives and everything that happened, and now they awaken in the present moment right in the middle of their plan to take revenge. I guess it’s because, the bell sounds like one for a clock tower? So by having a clock suddenly chime in, it’s like an auditory way of showing that the story has jumped ahead.
1:57 The change in scale here from a minor to a major shows how, I believe, the MC starts to feel hopeful that their plan can succeed.
2:31 This melody here seems very specific, almost as if it could work as the ANT’s melody maybe joining in to the main melody to show that they’ve finally made their appearance.
2:38 I know what you’re thinking, “Hey Garison, isn’t there another bell, shouldn’t this be a time flash forward?” Tbh, I think another time skip here would be too much XD So let’s just say a bell in isolation is a time skip. Here, it’s more like, the ANT is taunting the MC by saying “oh look I used the bell, remember how I killed your dad/dog/half-brother back then?” And because, man, there’s so many bells here lol. Don’t blame me! I write my reviews live, so I wouldn’t know there’d be like, fifty of them, here.
3:08 Hey, another reverse cymbal!
3:41 Reason I did the “whole new culture thing” was because of the brand new instruments here. Usually it was all these deep ones like violins and strings. But now it’s harpsichord. (I really only know these instrument names because of all the piano soundfonts I use in FL Studio, shoutouts to gm.sf2 lol)
4:25 I like the long parts here. The harpshichord here really reminds me of the Organ used at the beginning (It could also just be an Organ used at a really high octave lol). But it helps tie the whole piece together. The thuds are also cool.

Whewwww. Ok, man, I did not expect that to go for that long. But anyways, since I really felt like I went on a journey with this piece,
8/10

Lunatic Princess
0:00 Oooohhh wind instrument, cool. A very strong start.
0:14 HUAH
0:15 Ok I like how the main melody is played by this flute-sort of instrument.
0:30 OOHHH that’s strong.
0:49 Strong drums in the back. It’s like someone’s trying to break down the front door of your house. Ummm… maybe odd example.
1:25 Ayyyy alright fast paced part.
1:53 Nice melody, very grand.
2:22 YOOOOOO CHOIR. LET’S GOOOOOOOO. Musical Discoveries Thread coming in big!
Overall, the style fits Kaguya’s character very well, considering she’s based off traditional folklore and all that. I’m rating this higher than the orchestra because, there’s a lot of filler in that. I can appreciate this song for not only having a lot of short parts, but for not dragging out parts for so long, which makes repeated listens all the more entertaining.
10/10

16: Flash Storm
Metal, right? I'm trying to get a better grasp at the difference.

Sound Holic always delivers arrangements of highs: high quality, high intensity, and high energy. This remix is all of those, and deserves the praise for it. However, I'm struggling to find something uniquely memorable about it. To me, it sounds like a metal remix of At the End of Spring. It's a good remix and a great performance, but there's nothing specific to say about it aside from the slight elements of Tiny, Tiny, Clever Commander mixed in, which aren't even that prevalent.

It's still a 7/10, but I'm probably not going to remember this one.
There wasn't anything noteworthy about the lyrics either, btw.

17: Bad Apple
. . . without the exclamation marks.

I've a feeling this one's going to be rather divisive. Stating the obvious, it's really easy to miss the Bad Apple!! motifs completely; the arranger even admitted this was just a few note adjustments away from being an entirely original piece. As such, it's hard to decide how to estimate it.

As one who loves orchestra in its purest form, I love this piece. It's very baroque, which isn't used much anymore, due to the complexities of arrangement. The progression is almost invisible, which is usually the mark of a film score where the music follows predetermined emotional "events." Yet it never stagnates, and neither overstays its welcome despite being five and a half minutes.

The Bad Apple!! references add an intriguing element to the piece. On first listen, they can serve as islands of clarity in what may otherwise be a confusing ocean of unfamiliar music. I fear that, for some listeners, their existence may hamper appreciation for the full piece, since the tendency will be to focus on the familiar melodies. But others will gradually (or perhaps even quickly) appreciate the smooth integration of the motifs into a more emotionally diverse construct.

Regardless, this is certainly a unique experience for Touhou. 8/10.

18: Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess
"Of," not "in."

This arrangement is almost perfect! The instrumentation is a good blend of full orchestra and traditional folk, which creates a fitting representation of Kaguya in her most elegant strength. I've always preferred Lunatic Princess over Immortal Smoke simply for its complexity, and I find it very satisfying to finally hear a proper orchestral remix of the theme.

My one gripe is two fold, and is concerned with the ending. At 2:20, the drumbeat is delivered with an air of finality, and puts to rest the energy of the piece. At 2:22, the energy is picked up again, building up to the second stage of the arrangement. But there is no second stage; this section builds up to nothing. Granted, it's careful not to promise more than it delivers, but it still feels unnecessary to the rest of the piece. Of course, without this extra the remaining piece would feel too short, since it had very little build up of its own. I personally would have looped it at 2:21/2:22 back to 0:08/0:09, or have used the post-2:22 section for an intro to a second stage of the piece, or something along those lines.

Still, it's by far the best arrangement I've heard of one of my favorite themes. 9/10.

All right, here we go.

So, first off, highest rated song was the arrangement of Retribution for the Eternal Night, with an average of 9.5!  It also got three of the seven 10/10 ratings that we had.

It also was a pretty big help in giving Buskerdog the highest average ratings across his picks (8.8)

Get in the Ring, Toyosatomimi's medley, Lunatic Princess, and Time will tell also got 10/10 ratings from somebody.

My picks were  Time will Tell, Crimson Belvedere, and U.N. Owen (undoubtedly for some).

My personal favorites of other picks were:  Rush Garcia's Bad Apple, Lunatic Princess, The Legend of Tohno, and Tomorrow will be Special.

So, you guys were asking how I choose the order?  Sorry to say it's nothing special, I just make sure that I don't ever have a round with more than one entry by a single participant by making a list and staggering the first, second, and third piece of each round.  I don't really choose based on the actual pieces.  Sorry to disappoint.

A bit of sad irony that of picks, the one I like the most was the lowest rated.

I've noticed we've had a lot of things in the 5-7 range, which is kind of sad to see.  I wonder if our expectations have been getting too high?

mine way of ranking
10 = i can listen forever
9 = i love
8 = it's great
7 = i like
6 = ok
5 = uh?
and things get downhill from here on

im awaiting for G's guesses

But 5-7 range is still really good? There's a whole 4 spots lower that it's possible to be, you know. I though on average the scores were rather high for this tournament. Also, I have a text file reminding me what my standards should be for each score, to keep my scoring as consistent as possible.

The average of the whole tournament was 7.25.

Hmm, I don't know.  If a 5/10 is the even point of good/bad quality (equal parts good and bad) then that's a really bad place to be.

For me:

Spoiler

10 = As near to perfect as possible

9 = Classic/one of the best, worth remembering for years and returning to, something to prove the merits of a genre.

8 = Very good, a stand out in it's genre.

7 = Enjoyable, worth a few listens/viewings/sessions.

6 = Niche appeal, perhaps not for everyone, but the appeal is understandable even if not universal, or a flawed piece that had great potential.

5 = Equally flawed and worthwhile.  Some potential, but mixed with issues.

4/3/2 = The balance is skewed further toward the flaws the lower you go.

1 = Actively bad and/or harmful.  Hypothetically a piece that somehow detracts from it's audience while giving nothing in return.

Personally, I don't think anything here was below a six, and most were in the seven to nine range.  Which is what I would expect of Touhou.

Hmmm. For me, I base it more on "how enjoyable was this overall" rather than weighing good and bad parts. So for me, a 5/10 means "average enjoyment". That still means I liked it. It just doesn't mean I liked it significantly more than the average of what I've heard across Touhou remixes. The way I see it, there's so much quality stuff in the Touhou community that if I rated similarly to what you posted, I'd hardly ever drop below the halfway point of my scale - and then what's the point of having a 10-point scale? Basically, I think in terms of "how good is this" rather than "is this good".

But that's just my two cents. And if my line of thinking brings my scores lower than everyone else's, well, it probably doesn't matter that much because it's balanced out by Garison constantly yeeting 10s everywhere lol.

Welp, here goes my guesses. I haven’t looked at anyone’s reveals, besides Drunken and Buskerdog’s comments. I’m assuming Jssf already revealed their choices, so I ignored them here. Let’s see how accurate I am!

Green = 100% confirmed

Blue 75% Estimation

Yellow = 50% Estimation

Red = Random Guess

Garrrison

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8ItXsCo3rY

Concealed Four Seasons = That’s right, this was me! Last time Buskerdog revealed “The door was me” in choosing Okina’s song, so I chose one to mix things up. Actually, everything I said about having this song on the .mp3 and being surprised about a reupload was true! It’s just that series of events happened a few months before the tournament. So my reaction was genuine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVWbxcgSNpw

Rigid Paradise = “who put this?” – Drunken Flower. That’s right, it was also me! I saw Drunken’s march that he posted on the Musical Discoveries thread (I even commented on it) so I figured I’d get some representation for him on here. When getting music, I like to go for variety in genres.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOrjZTnTDfg

Reincarnation = Yeah, this is what I’m talking about in terms of variety. A piano piece, a happy slice of life piece and an intense life or death piece. I agree with what others say, the cover art is uhhmmm… taking a very realistic approach to art lol.

Jssf1992

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihg01Y-Xa9o

Crimson Belvedere = 1992? You know what there was during that time? Less technology and more pure nature. The clouds is just raw nature. Something you’d see of the National Geographic or Nature Planet. Plus, look at the profile picture of the uploader, it’s a male! Jssf is the only one here who has a picture of a male as their profile pic. So obviously, Jssf would find this piece quite relatable, I think.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEhbpvqLmRE

So Bright = Everyone except me rated this song low, and it’s not me. But Jssf doesn’t post their reviews, and they talked about later how sad they were that everyone was rating things with lower scores. So Jssf’s own post probably got affected by these ratings as well!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SaXILUYf8E

The Legend of Tohno = Everyone gave this one a negative review as well, so I figured this was his too based on the above reasoning.

Ken Hisuag

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JJUGQ6pcbE

There Was A Piano in Scarlet Mansion = Not only is this posted on Ken’s own Youtube channel, with an unlisted link none the less, but he also showed off the creator’s Bandcamp page.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHE9J7lnsn8

UN Owen Was Her Choir = I referenced wanting choir from Ken in the Musical Discoveries thread, so this could be his response. Ken is also known for getting more, experimental pieces, like the chiptune in the last tournament and that surfer song from the one before that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXbmD43_E64

Time Will Tell = At first, I did genuinely think this was Buskerdog’s choice, but seeing Buskerdog’s response and Ken’s “Haha” emoticon reaction on the post makes this clear that this is his post.

Drunken_Flower

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihg01Y-Xa9o

Retribution for the Eternal Night = Jssf called this song a “lovely arrange”. But jssf oftentimes compliments other peoples’ remixes anyways. Another factor is the nose. The art is drawn realistically in contrast to anime-style artwork with no nose. In fact, it’s the most prominent nose of all the pieces. And who has the most prominent nose on the site? Drunken_Flower! The nose in his profile picture is very heavily defined. Plus, if you look at his profile, it’s a realistic city. You know what’s in realistic cities? Realistic humans, with realistic noses! Not only that, but in a later entry, Drunken_Flower said something along the lines of “now that i gave this a 10/10 people are going to think this is my post”. Why would he say this if this hasn’t happened before? It’s because it has! This is the first 10/10 that Drunken gave in the tournament. Plus, in Drunken’s later ratings, he says a 10/10 is a song that he can “listen to forever”. Plus, he knows a lot of the advanced instruments like “erhu”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvTBhY9J1R0

The Way We Walked Home Together = I mentioned this above, but this post was also before Drunken said “now that i gave this a 10/10 people are going to think this is my post” so this also qualifies under that criteria. Plus, he misses summer, so he can be nostalgic for this piece.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stAHdV5Xj34

Bad Apple Orchestra = Sorry Drunken, but this is the last one you’re left with. I highly doubt this one’s yours but I couldn’t think of a third one for you XD.

Buskerdog

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdGLg5nNkaU

Toyosatomimi’s Medley = Drunken’s not familiar with orchestra. Amamiya prefers techno / rock metal. Those are guaranteed. Ken said he was searching up the circle after hearing, so he wasn’t aware of this song before. So either Jssf or Buskerdog. I could see it going either way. But I’ll go Buskerdog since he usually rates his own picks 8/10.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kSsKSADyc4

Lone Werewolf = They’re a fan of Eurobeat, like T.Stebbins. T.Stebbins being a male vocal singer. You know who else appears in this that sings and is a male? That’s right a male! This piece also is high paced and has a lot of energy, typical of Eurobeat songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLAy2xD9xJs

Lunatic Princess = Phoenix Kappashiro is a classic Touhou music reuploader which I wouldn’t be surprised Buskerdog would pull from. They also usually get high color anime vibrant visuals for the tracks they get.

Amamiya

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwEVlnY2P9g

World of Fantasy = They didn’t give it a rating, meaning they were the one who posted it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcQQwYKkj_s

Little Little Wish = Also didn’t give this a rating, so they also posted this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnUOEMp3cYg

Flash Storm = While they did give this one a review, they rated it positively, so I’ll consider this one there’s. They were probably in a rush and left this one in a hurry.

Now here’s my reaction to what Jssf posted.

Time Will Tell is definitely the most surprising! There was a lot of red herrings for this one, like how I used it as the song for one of my mod videos. Or how Buskerdog has it as the profile picture of his second alt channel. Or how Ken Hisuag did the “Haha” reaction to it, I’m guessing now just to add more chaotic madness to the guessing process lol.

U.N. Choir was also surprising. Maybe he frequents the Musical Discoveries thread? Who knows. I don’t.

But Crimson Belvedere though? YES LET”S GO WE TAKE THOSE. I can’t believe my absurd logic came in handy for once XD

At this point, any sane person would just stop right here, right? RIGHT?!?!?

Welp, here goes my guesses. I haven’t looked at anyone’s reveals, besides Drunken and Buskerdog’s comments. I’ve also looked at Jssf’s reviews, so I’ve changed these in accordance to his.

Green = 100% confirmed

Blue 75% Estimation

Yellow = 50% Estimation

Red = Random Guess

Time Will Tell = The TRIPLE red herring confirmed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHE9J7lnsn8

UN Owen Was Her Choir = Surprising, but I guess Jssf wanted to go for variety.

Ken Hisuag

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JJUGQ6pcbE

There Was A Piano in Scarlet Mansion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEhbpvqLmRE

The Legend of Tohno = A traditional piece. Ken usually goes after different sounding genres so I can see him choosing this one.

Bad Apple Orchestra = Ken said this piece was like a journey so I could see him choosing this.

Drunken_Flower

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihg01Y-Xa9o

Retribution for the Eternal Night = NOT JSSF CONFIRMED. Jssf was just saying lovely here to throw people off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvTBhY9J1R0

The Way We Walked Home Together

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SaXILUYf8E

So Bright = A more fitting choice than the Orchestra one for Drunken. Still not 100% confident on it, but a lot better than Bad Apple XD

Flash Storm

Now here’s how I rate the songs.

0 – 5 I only use this if there’s something that annoys me in the song that makes it painful to listen to. I will purposely avoid these tracks.

6 = Has a lot of effort put into it, but I still can’t stand listening to it.

7 = This is my average. I could listen to this one off but that’s about it.

8 = Standard track, good. I’d put this in my playlist.

9 = I’d put this in my playlist and sometimes purposely listen to it by itself.

10 = Definitely not perfect, but so good that it’s strengths make up for it’s few flaws. I’ll listen to this over and over until I get tired of it. By itself and in a playlist.

Buskerdog – Yeah I do like to throw around a bunch of 10’s everywhere XD. For me, 10 doesn’t represent perfect, since nothing can really be perfect. There’s always going to be something bad in a song. But it’s like, the good parts of the song cover up the bad parts.

Drunken_Flower – Interesting rating score. For me, 10 I could definitely not listen to it forever. There’s not really any song I could listen to forever without getting tired of it.

Jssf – I figured you put songs together so that only one person’s song is on each round, which I personally like, helps to add more variety when some people kind of choose the same style as a part of their personality.

so yeah, i like Funk, Disco, Synthwave (the Waves version, if only Synth then nono).
basically Hatsunetsumiko's, Shibayan, Violet Delta, Mahotoa Tofu (psst, free stuff).
and anything retro, i like. Even Rock'n'Roll (think Elvis), ElectroSwing or just regular SwingReggae? yea!! (i feel oldHelp.png.f57b7e26655160d850b0383c698a8ef1.png)
also Hip Hop can you believe it? there's so far i only met 2 albums for hip hop and both from Butaotome. or i just like those two album, not the genre... maybe....

so back at this song
and those guitar, man... it hella lit
i fell in love the first time hearing this.
and i see no problem with the voice 🤔 it sound great! whatdoy'allmean with it being scary and stuff?
i confus 🤔🤔🤔🤔

星霜降る野、夜を邌歩く(Legend of Tohno)
this actually one of my early song that i heard when just joined 2hu community.
that folk and rock combination with powerful voice is amazing!
i shoulda research MN-Logic and it's branch more

also for Ken, about the translation...
im sorry, i only found the scans of it.
and then after hearing it and reading it,
i found out they add lotta metaphors and hella complex lyric arrangement,
plus they use uncommon (rare) Kanjis which makes it more FUN... yeah...
so it gonna be a while....

The Way We Walked Home Together
i dont usually listen to Akatsuki, EXCEPT their ballad
for example: Mirage of Memories (キオクノ蜃気楼) and For the Weak and Small (小さく弱きものたちへ)
those two got a great lyric and meaning in it. not to mention how the arrangement is on another level.
(and one more exception: KUNG-FU Master No.9)
that's all i listen from Akatsuki Records...

to make it easy for y'all, i usually pick music for casual listening
wherever you go whatever you do it kinda fits, not too intense nor bland

Remix Tournament 4, AKA everyone realises how arbitrary our ranking system is lol.

Guess it's time to show my picks.

Spoiler

My picks were:

Toyosatomimi's Medley

Retribution for the Eternal Night

Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess

A bit different from my usual pattern, huh? I normally like to aim for variety between my 3 pieces, but last time Ken pointed out that he was surprised I hadn't submitted any orchestral stuff, and it made me think, although I've posted about orchestral in musical discoveries before, I don't think I've ever submitted one for remix tournament. So I decided to go all orchestral themes this time... well, actually I guess Retribution for the Eternal Night is more traditional than orchestral, but eh, close enough.
1992? You know what there was during that time? Less technology and more pure nature. The clouds is just raw nature. Something you’d see of the National Geographic or Nature Planet. Plus, look at the profile picture of the uploader, it’s a male! Jssf is the only one here who has a picture of a male as their profile pic. So obviously, Jssf would find this piece quite relatable, I think.
Um, 1992 wasn't that long ago.  I'm 28 not 60.  (Heck, the industrial age was well over a hundred years ago, even in the U.S.).  Not sure why you focused on the picture, and especially the profile picture (Roman is stylish, that's it).  On the other hand, I've said a number of times that my favorite of the mainline games is EoSD, and that orchestral is my favorite musical genre.

Everyone except me rated this song low, and it’s not me. But Jssf doesn’t post their reviews, and they talked about later how sad they were that everyone was rating things with lower scores. So Jssf’s own post probably got affected by these ratings as well!

Eh, I can see why you would think that, though wouldn't that have led you to the lowest rated piece?  (Actually, there were several pieces with lower averages . . . )

Ah whoops, I assumed Ken was the one who did the Surfer pick. When searching on the site, usually the results from the most recent Remix Tournament floods out the results from the previous ones, so I find it harder to look back on them.

Nevertheless a solid 2 out of 3 for mine (tho only because Jssf revealed his and gave me and extra 1 lol)

Yeah pretty much lol. The thing I feel with ratings is that, even though there's 10 scoring options, you're not really using all ten options all the time. It's usually like, 60% of the time 7-10, 30% of the time 4-6 and 10% rarely 1-3. Surprised I got another 2 of yours correct. Though, Retribution of the Eternal Night, I can see as yours considering it's Reimu and your profile pic slightly has a nose. Definitely not Ken tho, I don't even know if he has a nose or not.

5 hours ago, jssf1992 said:

Um, 1992 wasn't that long ago.

Ah yeah, well I was mostly using that date since it was the oldest birthdate here lol. (Discounting Ken, since idk if he has a nose or not). Ironically, you could say the clouds in the image represent an industrial era as well, since they're like all yellow and grey, which I don't think is naturally occurring (besides sunsets).

(Maybe I should have attributed the nose to you, considering Roman alludes to that one character from Pinocchio lol)

Dangit, now I'm going to mix up your future picks with Buskerdog's even more XD

Ah by red herrings, I mean unintentional red herrings. I doubt you'd literally go through all our channels lol. Mostly just a, surprisingly coincidental occurrence. But I guess that more so speaks to the popularity of the song. Opposite goes for U.N. Choir, guess that's just lucky timing.

Anyways, now I'm curious to see what Ken will post here~

Who NOSE what he'll post, after all

I'm alive!

Okay, first thing's first.

On 2/3/2021 at 6:04 PM, jssf1992 said:

I've noticed we've had a lot of things in the 5-7 range, which is kind of sad to see.

My default rating is seven; anything more is above average, between five and six is okay-but-with-conditions, and anything less is reserved for pieces I didn't enjoy. I want to reserve my tens for things I'm really impressed with, otherwise they lose their impact. That being said, come end of a tournament I tend to look back and regard my ratings as overly cautious, especially in the first round. In my opinion, a good tournament should be in the "5-7 range;" anything lower would be unexpected for this group, and anything higher should reflect an exceptionally good tournament. I personally think RT4 went quite well.

On that note, I'm not sure ratings are always the most decisive factor in determining the success of a tournament either. With the conclusion of RT4, I'm reflecting on which entries are likely to be the most memorable for me. I rated Dawn of Asuka unusually high, but I haven't thought much about it since the second round; alternatively, I've listened to No More, Anymore? quite a bit more than Kung-Fu Master No.9 since RT2 despite not being as receptive to it initially. So with that in mind, these are my top three most personally memorable entries for this tournament:

Spoiler

1: Time Will Tell

2: Little Little Wish

3: Path Through the Bamboo Forest

With all that out of the way, we can finally get to the anticipated stuff. With how late I am on this, I might as well get my guesses out before confirming my picks.

Spoiler

It's best to get the obvious ones out of the way first, so as to narrow down possibilities. Normally I'd start with Amamiya Dana, because he doesn't rate his own submissions. But this time he sneakily rated one of them, thus making things much more interesting. Instead, I'll have to start with Jssf. Usually he's the hardest, since I have no information to go on. Since he revealed his picks in the tally post, however, it makes sense to start there (I feel like I'm cheating, though . . .):

jssf1992
U.N. Owen Was Her? [Choir]
Gensokyo, Where the Flowers of Feelings Bloom
Time Will Tell

I'd like to think I would have figured this out by process of elimination, but I obviously can't know for sure. There were multiple entries that I immediately attributed to someone based on the style or genre, only for that person's review to put that assumption in question. U.N. Owen was Garison's requested choir, while the Eurobeat of Time Will Tell seemed to implicate Busker, but in both cases the suspects' "testimonies" seemed to "clear" them. Something I didn't notice at first was the upload dates on the videos in question; I know the meme is that you're familiar with older works, but it may be a usable strategy in future. Regardless, your submissions definitely held up amongst the rest; I'm not about to do the calculations myself, but Time Will Tell deserved to be among the higher ratings.

Dana Iclucia
World of Fantasy ~ Psystyle Remix
Little Little Wish

For the third pick, I finally get to try out my deduction skills. I assume something with a high intensity beat and a decently high rating. Also it can't be from a round that one of your other picks was in, per Jssf's clarification. Given all this, I'm going to go with Flash Storm.

For the record, I remember Little Little Wish from Musical Discoveries; it was posted directly after Karminations, which was the song that got me into Stack as an artist rather than a song-by-song basis (and is still one of my favorites, btw). I'm actually really glad you submitted it here, though; I was not in a position to appreciate it fully the first time, and it being in a tournament forced me to consider the piece more thoroughly. I probably should have rated it higher than I did . . . Know that I've added it to my personal collection.

Now things get very difficult very quickly.

Garison DeCrick
Concealed Four Seasons ~ Piano
June, Hydrangea, Test of Courage
Reincarnation ~ Symphonic Metal

I have to go with the assumption that you're intentionally encrypting your reviews, because I know for a fact you posted that Reincarnation remix in the Halloween tournament. There are no specific reasons why I'm attributing the other two to you, except that I find it difficult to see either DF or Busker submitting them based on their reviews.

Full disclosure, I think I rated Concealed Four Seasons too high. Listening to it again, I'm more sure now then I was initially that the arranger recorded multiple individual remixes and overlaid them in editing. Other than that, these submission did a good job of mixing things up a bit.

Buskerdog
Path Through The Bamboo Forest
Wouldn't you know, Jssf confirms the one submission I was already confident on. Past this I have absolutely no idea what's yours versus what's DF's. The best I can do is use the review style of this one confirmed submission for comparison.
The Dawn of Asuka, and the Beginning of the Legend (Brass Band Ver.)
Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess ~ Orchestra

If I'm right, then it would seem you were leaning in on the orchestral representation, and I'm not about to complain about that. I was pretty confident from the first listening of Path Through the Bamboo Forest that it would win, with Time Will Tell being the only contender in my mind (btw, first non-vocal arrangement to win!).

Drunken_Flower
So Bright
The Way Home We Walked On Together
Time Passes in the Field, Walk Slowly Through the Night

Similar to Garison, I'm pretty sure you're covering your tracks very thoroughly. That being said, you usually have wider genre experience than the rest of us, and I'd initially assumed you for both So Bright and Time Passes in the Field on respective first listens. Your reviews keep throwing me off, so this is the best I can do. I really appreciated these picks, though less for the pieces themselves and more for the discovery they promised. I've already been listening to more MN-logic24 (expect that in Musical Discoveries eventually).

I look forward to reading everyone's reveals and seeing how wrong I was about the last three. Speaking of which, here are my reveals:

Spoiler

There was a Piano in Scarlet Devil Mansion?
I've already picked out my submissions for next tournament, and all of them already exist on Youtube; y'all shouldn't have to put up with this next time.
There's not much more for me to say beyond what was in my review. I feel a bit bad for promising Garison a piano submission and then managing to find a style he didn't like. I've got a plan for next time, though . . . Hopefully enough to redeem myself.

Bad Apple
Rush Garcia is one of my favorite orchestral arrangers in the VGM sphere, not just for his style but for his skill. This is an especially imaginative arrangement, taking a theme that's been done almost to death and doing something completely unexpected with it. I anticipated a skeptical reception for it, but it seems most of you liked it. I'll keep that in mind for future tournaments.

LWCO
I found GET IN THE RING shortly after RT3, and it is officially my favorite doujin circle ever. I've become especially fond of their fun rock arrangements. Expect quite a bit of their work to pop up in Musical Discoveries now that I'm finally free to share it.

That took a lot longer than I thought it would, and I'm glad I didn't try to do this yesterday. Now I'll have to come back tomorrow to see what everyone else said. 😴

Wow, ok. Surprisingly spot on! I’m especially impressed by your use of the spoiler tags, I completely forgot about them in my guess XD Though, to keep them spoiler-esque, I’ll just copy and paste the quotes instead of using the site’s multi-quote, since I’ll be quoting a lot. Plus, I type this in a Word Document so… here we go!

Ken Hisuag: “I have to go with the assumption that you're intentionally encrypting your reviews”
Definitely the correct assumpt-… well confirmation now lol. I like to go with variety to mix things up, but I guess since everyone else has their own distinct genres they choose, it becomes more clear that the “out-there” picks are mine.
Of course, it might be a bit unfair to choose purely random chaotic songs, so I like to have them as references to what I say in other threads.

Concealed Four Season ~ Piano

Garison DeCrick: “Cute duet, sounds like a march”

Ken Hisuag: “I know for a fact you posted that Reincarnation remix in the Halloween tournament”.
I didn’t think anyone would remember that one comment I posted on that thread! Here it is for anyone who’s curious:

Garison DeCrick: “I'll still wait on sharing one in particular until the next Remix tournament pops up, whenever that is. Since it doesn't make sense out of context lol”

Originally, I was planning on using that for the next Halloween remix tournament, as evident by this comment.
Garison DeCrick: “Guess there's always next Halloween...”
But Jssf suddenly revealed that the next Remix Tournament would be Phantom-themed! And since Mima’s like a Phantom, plus the general spooky air of the cover art with the realistic looking classical painting, it was a perfect choice!

Ken Hisuag: “Full disclosure, I think I rated Concealed Four Seasons too high.”
I admit, maybe part of the reason why I rated the song highly is because I’ve been looking for anyone to reupload it for the visuals. I’ve literally had the .mp3 file for that song on my IPod for at least over a year. So I’m guessing the joy of finally finding the animation for it made me give it a higher score. Plus, it’s a cool concept. Perhaps not executed completely perfectly, but still, something I hope to see other people imitate in the future.

🥳

I'm really surprised that worked! DF's reviews of The Way Home and Time Passes in the Field had me heavily doubting them as his picks, despite my initial assumptions. It eventually came down to The Way Home, and between Busker's and DF's respective reviews I went with the most believable option. This was definitely harder than last tournament.

I feel like I already "knew" this, but the clear statement will certainly help in future.

I've given a brief explanation of my submission strategy previously, but for what it's worth: I separate out discoveries that impress me in some unique aspect, or that I'm looking to present here in a special way. Bad Apple from this tournament and Lunatic Princess from RT3 are arrangements that appealed to me for the unusual approaches they took in adapting their source themes, while previous tournament entries Daughter of Touhou Spring and Idola Deus were musical styles I wasn't familiar with at the time. I take this approach because I want to hear what others have to say about them, and as such I'm not usually too worried about ratings as much as I am concerned with the experiences had.

Remix Tournament 4, AKA everyone realises how arbitrary our ranking system is lol.

And that's kind of the point, right? If we took our ratings too seriously, this wouldn't be as fun. They're important to quantify the experiences, but it's the reasoning behind them that make it worth doing. For me, it's a forced exercise in evaluating my approach to music as a whole. I'd heard Little Little Wish before, but I was forced to consider it seriously this time around because of it's presence in the tournament; subsequently, I came to appreciate it much more than I would have otherwise.

With that out of the way, I can get into the fun stuff.

Yeah, glad to hear people saying that because that's exactly the way it should be taken!

Gonna thank everyone for participating once again, and thanks to Jssf for hosting and number crunching.

There were a lot of really interesting pieces this time around which were a lot of fun to experience. Although I didn't originally rate it high, there always seems to be that one piece that grows on me a load, and it's So Bright - I've just fallen for how damn catchy it is, and it probably stood out as the most memorable piece of this tournament for me. (Although I think some people said they didn't like the voice, that never bothered me at all, it was just that not understanding the lyrics was frustrating - I've since unlocked the ability to actually make out some of them now.)

Remix Tournament in 2021: "Hello and thank you for attending my TED talk. By the end of this presentation you will hopefully understand how the composer has used melodies to portray Cirno's internal struggle of not knowing whether the earth is flat or not. But first, we need to talk about parallel universes."

So Bright

...

I wanna make you laugh
I wanna make you shine

Standing here you and I tonight
Living in different worlds
I saw you in the night

Ocean of our words divide two hearts
And I'm trying to cross the silent night

In your eyes
I will find
In your eyes
Who you are

I wanna make you laugh
I wanna make you shine
I wanna make you laugh
I wanna make you shine

Standing here you and I tonight
Living in different worlds
I saw you in the night

Ocean of moonlight shine on
Two hearts never strong but never with a doubt

In your eyes
I will find
In your eyes
Who you are

I wanna make you laugh
I wanna make you shine
I wanna make you laugh
I wanna make you shine

If we only got tonight it's alright
'Cause tonight with you is so bright
If we only got tonight it's alright
'Cause tonight with you is so bright

*repeat*
