Touhou AU?

Recommended Posts

IF there was a touhou AU in Undertale, which character would be what? And would the map change? Also would the fighting system be different at all?

Hmm, Frisk would obviously be Reimu... I don't know who Marisa would be... Toriel is Suwako and Asgore is Kanako... probably Sans would be Remilia and Papyrus would be Flandre, and Undyne... hmm... lets go with Youmu???? Alphys would presumably be Nitori xD. I don't really know... theres a lotta Touhou characters and I wouldnt know who would fit in who.

The ruins would probably be the Hakurei Shrine and New Home would be Moriya shrine... sans and papyrus's house would probably fit to be scarlet devil? Waterfall is Hakugyokurou... and Hotland??? Hmm.. Kappa stuff lol

The fighting system would be the same, but the soul would be probably smaller in my opinion, cause of bullet hell patterns, obviously. and the spell card they are using would display at the top and the ACT's would appear as spell cards you could use..

Hope this helped in any way, lol.

Oddly, Subterranean Animism makes for a interesting comparison to Undertale as is.  A dangerous species (or multiple in Touhou's case) exiled to a vast underground landscape that has formed it's own society, many of which are no longer predisposed to violence towards humans.  One of them has a terrible plan that they think will benefit their people ( Asgore/Utsuho ), one of them wants the hero to interfere with that plan ( Flowey/Rin for different reasons ), one wants to help you but thinks you can't handle what's ahead ( Toriel/Satori), some one is friendly despite being obligated to fight you ( Papyrus/Yuugi ), and from there they get even further apart ( Sans/Koishi, Mad Dummy/Parsee ).  None of the comparisons are one-to-one, but it's still an interesting exercise to think about.

Here's a cool video I found. I found it surprising since it has a lot in common with my own headcanons for Touhou X Undertale. While it is yet-another-Sans-fight-TM, there's certain characters that appear around midway through that helps make the fight more unique.

The biggest thing in terms of references is, of course, how big of a Touhou fan Toby Fox is. Like, he's been a fan of the series for over a decade and has literally hung out and interviewed with ZUN. Second's the names, since Undertale is a story about animals underground and Subterrenaan Animism is a story about animals underground. But besides, that, these are my thoughts. Personally, I look at the more visual aspects of the characters to find connections between them.

My headcanons from strongest to weakest are the following.

Mettaton = Utsuho (especially the NEO form with the blaster, stance). A cool reference since NEO dies in one hit and Utsuho is commonly considered to be way easier than Rin/Sans.

Rin = Sans. Both use blue flaming skulls. The venegeful spirits are very similar to Gaster Blasters. Plus, Rin is commonly considered to be the hardest boss in a regular SA route (discluding Extra obviously), as is Sans during his respective route.

Chara = Koishi. The infamous knife move jumpscare with red text from 14.5 similar to Chara's red text and jumpscare.

Frisk = Satori. Both have blank expressions, related to Chara/Koishi.

Undyne = Yuugi. Makes sense since you travel a water area underground while a buff woman throws spears at you. Unrelated, but Undyne is a funny reference to Patchouli's Water spellcard "Princess Undyne".

Muffet = Yamame. Both spider girls.

Alphys = Alphes. I know this one's more of a real person's pen name, but the names are extremely similar.

Parsee = Papyrus. Papyrus is shown being jealous of the Royal Guards and wants to be one. Plus, before you meet him, at the beginning of Snowdin Forest, you cross a wooden bridge made by Papyrus which barely anyone uses. Parsee has a big bridge connection with her theme being "The Bridge People No Longer Cross"
