buskerdog
I really like this idea. I opened the tab expecting there to be 3 - 5 songs or something, then was a bit blown away when there was something like 27... I don't have time to listen to all of that! But I listened to the first few, I quite liked the first one. Anyway, keep doing this, it's an excellent idea, I'll certainly share some songs too when a theme comes up that I know a good song for! Ken Hisuag
My thoughts: Spoiler #1 -- I loved the percussion in this, but I think the melody progression was sacrificed for it. 6/10 #2 -- This was spectacular. Definitely adding to my collection. 9/10 #3 -- The first part had a fun classical feel to it. The second part was simply beautiful. I'm not sure if putting them both into a single mix was a good choice on the circle's part. Had there been a transition, they would have added to each other. As is, they may distract from each other. That aside, I actually really liked both parts. 6/10 #4 -- I appreciated this piece. The music collection version seemed to be going for a traditional style, which this mix perfects. 8/10 #5 -- (Vanishing Dream ~ Lost Dream) Rather slow for the melody. I think I understand the feel they were going for, but the original doesn't lend itself to it the way I would have thought. 3/10 #6 -- I'm not a fan of Pandemonic Planet; it's too all-over-the-place for my tastes. As such, this mix was well done, but I couldn't enjoy it. 4/10 #7 -- This piece lacks unity between its serious and fun sides. All the same, it's not poorly done, and I always appreciate a bit of Wind Girl. 5/10 #8 -- Simply amazing. Would you happen to know where to find the lyrics? 9/10 #9 -- Similar to number five, I don't think the original lent itself to the intended style as much as I would have expected. 3/10 #10 -- A project like this shouldn't work; they're trying to squeeze ten different motifs into less than five minutes. I expected this to feel disjointed all the way through. But contrary to my expectations, this piece did very well in it's progression and transitions. There was only one part where a motif change seemed a bit ruff, and some were so smooth I didn't even notice the change. 8/10 My contribution: Spoiler ボーダーオブライフ Circle: Ryuuha Mikakutei Album: 東方幻妖夢 Original: Bloom Nobly, Ink Black Cherry Blossoms ~ Border of Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg-N3XU6fpE Lament to the Weeping Children Circle: Lowlands Blossom Original: The Lamentations Known Only by Jizo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bNLB0H-Uhg Orchestral remixes are my favorite class of remix. It's hard to find really good ones, but once you do, they stick with you. Thanks for this, Drunken_Flower. I look forward to this becoming a monthly highlight for the Shrine. buskerdog
I won't dither on with my thoughts of all of the pieces (I haven't got particularly much to say on all of them anyway), but number 9... My God... It absolutely swept me away. The music along with those stunning images made me think about an open world Touhou game with this sort of music, a slower pace, and a somewhat darker tone. Almost something like Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I don't even know how that would work, but I want it. ZUN plz splash out all of your budget XD. Anyways, I'm ranting about unrelated things now, so here is my contribution :D. === CAUTION ====== CAUTION ====== CAUTION ====== CAUTION === Spoiler === CAUTION ====== CAUTION ====== CAUTION ====== CAUTION ===

Ken Hisuag
Keeping the month going . . . Spoiler This is an intriguing situation: the same remix twice with a twist. T,1948,12 Yama of Xanadu, Circle: WAVE Album: ARCHIV-EAST Original: Oriental Judgement in the Sixtieth Year ~ Fate of Sixty Years https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGLkpvT2cQI Guilty or Not Guilty Circle: WAVE Album: Symphonic Fantasia "Cherry Blossom" -Illusionary Symphonic Poetry: Higan Cherry Blossom- Original: Oriental Judgement in the Sixtieth Year ~ Fate of Sixty Years https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A9fD87xL5Q There's even a third version of this same remix, but it has more significant differences (mainly it's closer to symphonic metal than orchestral, so I'm not including it here). Ken Hisuag
Another reason I appreciate orchestral remixes so much is their diverse application. Because the nature of an orchestra is a wide variety of instruments, there are theoretically no limits to what can be done to a given source piece. It may be more of a medium than a genre. I say this because there were plenty of pieces that are almost orchestral, but blend into other genres like symphonic rock and jazz. I'm not always sure where the lines between genres are drawn. Spoiler Advent begins tomorrow, so here's a Kirismas remix. The Magical Tale of Marisa Kirismas Circle: Lowlands Blossom Original: The Witch's Ball ~ Magus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RtEUo3LBZU And to wrap up this month, a orchestral remix of a vocal remix. Even the Blossoming Flowers will Eventually Scatter [Orchestral Ver.] Circle: Kokyo Active NEETs Album: I'm finding conflicting translations, so I'm using the Japanese title: 第1幕 協奏曲「色は匂へど散りぬるを」 Original: This is a remix of Yuuhei Satellite's Even the Blossoming Flowers will Eventually Scatter, which is itself a remix of The Gensokyo the God's Loved https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfghwi4EBX4 I apologize for starting a sentence with "and;" it didn't sound right without it. I really enjoyed this, and I look forward to next month's theme. See y'all then! TTT

Ken Hisuag
You're right about it being hard to find. I'm afraid I can't contribute anything to this month, but I can at least provide perspective. Spoiler 1 - 月杜: I think this piece lends itself to becoming a waltz with its easily shortened arpeggios. Rearranging the melody to fit, however, must have been quite the project. I'm not surprised this is the first thing to come up in a search for Touhou waltz, as it's definitely earned it. 8/10 2 - Waltz of Dawn: Obviously the title implies a waltz, but . . . This piece makes me question what defines a waltz. Without context, I would have identified this a “jazz,” with its staggered melodies and difficult-to-place time signature. My expectations of the piece impacted my appreciation. 3/10 3 - 夜は語らずとも: This has the feel of a true waltz. I enjoyed the moments where I recognized a Touhou motif, but I don’t think this medley worked overall. With a few exceptions, a lot of the motifs got swallowed up in each other. I will refer back to my comments on medley from last month (#10, 幻想郷英幽伝説). 2/10 4 - り話は森で生まれる: This piece is so fun! I’m always excited about a creative remix of a lesser-known Touhou piece, as it helps me better appreciate the motifs I may not have given enough attention. This cover gets creative with the very style/genre it’s incorporating; it’s refreshing to hear a waltz done with more creative instrumentation. 9/10 5 - Sakura Sakura Waltz: Again, implied waltz, but it sounds like jazz. The time signature is more easy to distinguish on this one, but it still has the staggered note arrangement that is characteristic of jazz. Well, I enjoyed the piece anyway. 5/10 6 - Patient Number 023: Inevitably, Candid Friend ends up here with its 3/4 time. It would be easy to write off this piece for that reason, but I’m honestly impressed with how smoothly the arranger accomplished the transition. I wish it was longer and more creative, though . . . 8/10 7 - Scallywag’s Waltz: The arranger says they were originally trying to make a jazz remix, and I think it shows in the finished piece’s tempo. If this piece had been slowed down just a bit, it would have retained the nonchalant swag while sounding more like a dance. 6/10 8 - 背中合わせの舞踏会: I love this arrangement. It takes its source material and adds something I didn’t know I wanted. This is the kind of Touhou remix I love most. But I can’t think of anything interesting to say about it . . . 10/10 9 - Waltz of the Eastern Country: I didn’t expect a vocal here, but there’s no denying this as a waltz, and a high-quality arrangement from both sides at that. Bonus points for the animation. I also can’t let this pass without remarking how difficult it is to remix Necrofantasia, which makes successful attempts like this one all the more rewarding. 9/10 10 - Scarlet Devil Mansion Waltz: Tokyo Active NEETs does not disappoint. Septette is one of the more versatile pieces in the Touhou repertoire, but if anything that just means it’s more of a challenge to arrange it creatively. If I have a complaint, I have never been a fan of fade-out finishes. 9/10 Honestly, you did very well finding pieces for such an obscure genre. I know things have been busy this past month, so I thank you for taking the time to bring these gems here. I hope everyone had a merry Christmas, and I wish everyone a happy New Year! See y'all in 2020. TTT
