Image hosting websites and checking systems

Recommended Posts

This was an unplanned thread, but I decided to go with it nonetheless due to an experience encountered mere minutes ago.

Sometimes, there are moments when I simply hate the Danbooru art approval system. You need an entire commission to check a single image, and if they do not give a verdict in 3 days, the image is deleted because it was not approved/nobody had the time to review it. Which is an extremely flawed system, because I have seen a lot of awesome art that was deleted for that reason. Is this a general problem with image hosting websites, or it is more/most proeminent with Danbooru?

Spoiler

Take for example this image (artist: naufaldreamer) https://danbooru.donmai.us/posts/5325445?q=touhou+status%3Adeleted

__clownpiece_touhou_drawn_by_naufaldreamer__234a255943152586d6368bed2259fa92.jpg

This image is now in the "Deleted" category due to the following reason:

This post was deleted for the following reason: Unapproved in three days (27 days ago)

  • It has been reviewed by 6 approvers. 6 did not like the post enough to approve it.

Or take this case (artist: xixing chun) https://danbooru.donmai.us/posts/5342159?q=touhou+status%3Adeleted

__fujiwara_no_mokou_and_houraisan_kaguya_touhou_drawn_by_xixing_chun__5dace83a355afb84c6b84bcd1dd15f42.jpg

This post was deleted for the following reason: Unapproved in three days (21 days ago)

  • It has been reviewed by 10 approvers. 10 did not like the post enough to approve it.

Or even just this cute Fumo drawing by rei (tonbo0430) https://danbooru.donmai.us/posts/5302893?q=touhou+status%3Adeleted

__hong_meiling_touhou_drawn_by_rei_tonbo0430__b44f992a555e38f5c9963044a7bf5be4.png

For this one, it just says literally nobody checked the image in the required 3 days, therefore it went to "Deleted"

What is the people simply did not have the time to review it? Knowing how much art (and sometimes how much trash - sorry to say it) Danbooru inspectors have to go through daily, is it possible for an image to actually be brought back if someone actually thinks to go back through the post(s) and actually review them?

Meanwhile, this is the Danbooru policy in terms of deleted content:

Quote

What should I do about my deleted Posts?

Most of the time, it is safe to assume that every post in the Queue has been reviewed at least once.

If an upload isn't approved after three days, it is mostly because it doesn't meet our quality standards. It is comparatively rare for a high-quality post to end up getting deleted because the Queue missed it.

With the understanding that the manual and subjective process of the Mod Queue has its inherent flaws, post deletions may be appealed. For information on lodging a deletion appeal, please consult the article on appeals.

Yeah, I am very sure none of the 3 examples I have shown was good enough to pass the quality check. Right...

I hope they make the approval timing more longer, and I personally haven't seen "bad" art posted onto Danbooru yet, but I also think it stinks that very decent artwork would disappear just because not enough people approved of it yet or like it.

I'm mainly saying this towards most art that got deleted btw and not just with Touhou related art.

For some reason, some people on Danbooru really don't like western artstyles, I get that they're mostly used to anime art styles, but calm down please.

I did mention earlier in the Chatbox that I don't think Gelbooru is quite as strict as Danbooru, even though it is based on the same software, so maybe give that a go. Of course, I could be wrong as I'm merely a translator over there (I've only ever uploaded a single file myself: a modified H-anim of Maribel & Renko), but the mods do seem pretty chill on the forum, only deleting images that are very obviously not of Japanese style or just poor quality all round. (^_^)

For sure, I don't think any of the images you include here would fall afoul of their TOS since I've seen lots of other Touhou material in the same vein. The Meiling one especially is no different from a similarly cute Cirno pic I saw just the other week in point of fact. (^_~)

I am not mad. Just...disappointed. So I guess they only want to focus on anime/Japanese modern style art. Which I think might be a little bit of a shame, as there might also be good stuff that is not in that particular style.

I'm sorry, I meant some of the users of Danbooru having some sort of disgust towards western art styles, you're fine, I do understand why you're very disappointed about that. I personally enjoy seeing western art styles that don't look samey or bland, like what corporations use a lot, but I also enjoy angsty/gothic anime art as well.

  • 4 months later...

A little late, but I think the following article explains very well what Danbooru accepts and what it doesn't:

Spoiler

help:upload rules (locked)

All uploads to Danbooru are subject to the following upload rules. Uploads that break these rules may be deleted

Prohibited Content

You may not upload any of the following to Danbooru:

  • Off-topic content (see below).
  • Poorly drawn content.
  • Paid rewards.
  • Commercially licensed anime or manga.
  • Real photos of any person under the age of 18.
  • Works containing third-party watermarks.
  • Works upscaled or downscaled by third parties, including Waifu2x upscales.
  • Hard translations to non-English languages (hard translated (non-english)).
  • Third-party edits that substantially alter the content of the image, such as nude filters, headshops, fake translations, or meme or joke edits.
  • Low effort or unoriginal memes, such as motivators (if not done by the original artist).
  • AI-generated art.

Off-Topic Content

Danbooru is primarily for anime-style or anime-related artwork. "Anime-related" is a broad term that includes anime, manga, videogames, original artwork, and other similar material.

The following things are considered off-topic:

  • Real life pornographic photos or videos, such as Western porn actresses or Japanese AV idols.
  • Real life photos that have nothing to do with anime, manga, or videogames.
  • Low effort or unoriginal memes.
  • Western toon porn (think "Simpsons porn in its original style", not "good quality Avatar porn").

Borderline Content

The following things are not strictly against the rules, but they have a much higher chance of being deleted than normal. Uploaders should be careful about uploading these things, and approvers should be careful about approving them.

  • Extreme fetish content. This includes extreme guro, scat, bestiality, vore, "hyper" fetishism (monstrously large body parts), diaper fetishism, and other extreme or unusual fetishes.
  • Explicit furry content.
  • 3D porn or SFM porn.
  • Cosplay photos.
  • Hard translated comics.
  • Anime screencaps.
  • Third-party edits not in the "Prohibited Content" section above.
  • Duplicates.
  • Bad anatomy.

This article is pretty good, and at least it also sums up the do's and don't for art on Danbooru.
