Playing Retro Era Touhou games (the ones that come as a .hdi file):
You need anex86e1.zip

- Start anex86.exe and click on "..." to the right of HDD1.
- Select your game's .hdi file
- Start and play.
Installing Retro Era Touhou games using floppy disk images and anex86:
Requirements: Emulator; Floppy disk image(s) for the game of your choice; A working DOS image (see last two instructions further below)
- Open anex86.exe
- Select your .hdi with your DOS system for HDD1 and (the first) .fdi file for your game in FDD1
- Start the emulator
- Press Shift+F9 and you'll see the console. If nothing happens, try to capture/un-capture your mouse by pressing Alt+Backspace and then try it again.
-
Type:
B:
Install A: - Press Enter to proceed and "Y" if it wants you to confirm something.
-
If the game comes with two .fdi files, you'll have to switch to the 2nd floppy image disk after that or at some point really.
Open the Anex86 - Settings window again. Select the other .fdi for FDD1 and proceed with your installation. - The game should now be installed in A: and you should be in the game's folder after installation
-
Type "Game" in the console while you're in the game's folder to start the game
Configurations for playing the games:
Open anex86.exe and go to the config.
Video tab
-
Update Strategy: Sync
Value: 1 (2 or 3 if you experience slowdown)
Wave tab
-
Rate/Buffer
Rate: 44KHz or 55KHz
Buffer: 16 - Check "Use wave out"
Sound tab
-
type: -86
Check "real"
Installing Dos using the floppy disk images:
You need anex86e1.zip and DOS.zip for this.
- Download the two archives and extract them into a folder of your choice. In my case I made an Anex86 folder for the emulator and inside of that also a DOS folder for the dos floppy disk images.
- Start anex86.exe
- To the right of the HDD1 line, click on New
- Give it a name of your choice under File Name. In the dropdown menu below Disk Info, select 40MB and then Create to the right of the window. 40MB should be enough to hold the system and TH01-05. You could also go for 80MB if you want.
- To the right of the FDD1 line, click on "..." and select DOS1.FDI from the DOS floppy image disks you extracted. Click on Start after that.
- [If you see garbled characters] Download others.zip and extract it to your anex86 folder. Open anex86.exe and then Config. Go to the Font tab, click on "..." to the right of file name and then point it to your font file (font_jp.bmp). Start anex again and see if that fixed the garbled text from the previous step.
- We're going to click on Enter for a while. Press Enter for that screen and the next, and then we wait a little bit. After that it's two times Enter again, and then wait. Third time's the charm, so we press Enter two times yet again.
- You should see two lines that include "#2". That means go to the anex86 - setting window again without closing the emulator. Eject DOS1.FDI in FDD1 and select DOS2.FDI. Go back to the emulator and click Enter.
- We're going to repeat the same thing but for #3, #4 and so on until we used them all
- Press Enter a few times after that until there are no more screens to go through and you land at a terminal. Close the emulator.
- Going back to the Anex86 - Settings window, eject FDD1 and tick the "HDD -> FDD" box at the bottom.
- Done. You should now be able to start the emulator again.
Using the pre-installed DOS image:
You need anex86e1.zip and dos.zip for this.
- Download the two archives and extract them into a folder of your choice. In my case I made an Anex86 folder for the emulator and dropped dos.hdi from dos.zip inside as well.
- Start anex86.exe
- To the right of the HDD1 line, click "..." and select your dos.hdi
- Tick the "HDD -> FDD" box at the bottom
- Click Start. Done.
